TFF serves up some very tasty fried fish. While it's not a cheap meal, it's the best Southern -cornmeal based-fried fish I've tasted in the area and the reason I have patronized the business for so long. Perhaps there are pop-ups serving some good Southern fried fish in Oakland, but I haven't found one yet. That said, the establishment is always clean and tidy and never -ever- smells like fried fish or fired foods. For some that would be an immediate red flag, but I appreciate not coming out smelling like a skillet of hot grease. I've never had issue with tainted or burnt oil flavors or greasy foods. Both Ben and Crystal season and fry fish well however, I'm partial to Crystal in the galley. The tartar sauce is house-made and always fresh. TFF has even done an à la carte catered menu for me and the fish varieties and prawns were incredible and enjoyed by everyone! Typically, I order on site and wait because I add a bit of customization to my order. I request extra seasoning on everything and the seafood fried crispy. I've been a long-time customer of The Fat Fish, and I've experienced some lows in the quality of the food over the years, but the quality always ramps back up, and has been consistently excellent, and is my go-to spot for fried fish. I only get the Pollock because it is the best tasting fish, and it's been delicious and consistent over the last few years....even during Covid. The french fries were good the coleslaw was good the tartar sauce is good The fish was not greasy I think it is air baked with a really nice crust. Parts of the fish when I bit into it tasted fishy. My boyfriend and I came here two days ago and we ordered fish (alaskan Pollock) and prawn meal and the prawn and chicken meal. I ordered a strawberry mango smoothie and he ordered a Oreo shake. Overall the food was very mid. The drinks were the best part of the meal. The shrimp was just OK. The fish tasted very rubbery and old. My boyfriend said the chicken was OK but we've had better at the MB liquor store down the street. Everything just lacked flavor, even the fries. Oh SO good! My husband and shared a Pollock and Prawn Combo, and we just inhaled it. The fish had a perfectly crisp texture, and the flavor shone through. The French fries were delicious. And the best part? I can't believe I'm saying this about a fish and chips place, but the food was NOT greasy! Mmmmmmm, a couple of inefficiencies that need to be addressed: 1) Maybe it was just this day, but their # (510) 653-2121 wasn't working. I along with a number of others made them aware when we walked in. 2) The To-Go menu prices aren't the same in the actual restaurant. Everything is about $1-2 dollars more than what's listed on the To-Go menu. 3) It takes quite a while for your order. Hence, why I tried to call in! Great little fish shack. Nice variety of options as long as you want it fried. Fried catfish, whiting, red snapper, oysters, prawns, and wings are available. I've had almost everything and have yet to be disappointed. They even do a good job on the fries. The price keeps creeping up, but it's still a decent value.
