First thing first. NO AC.. thank god it was cool outside and not hot. But this place doesn't have AC. It was a neat vintage looking hotel. With old furniture and an old look. Nothing modern. I won't stay here again. There was spider webs in the room and bathroom. The lobby smelled old once you walked in. Staff was nice and friendly. The whole place has a creepy vibe to it. For the price. I should have stayed at super 8 or something more modern. Tells you that spending more isn't always better. Spend $240 for the Friday night. You also hear everything when your in the room. From all around. Walls are thin. read more

This stay, the location, the service is not just the only thing that is wrong with this property 1. Hotel is in need of serious updating. The rooms are old and dirty and do not have air conditioning. It was 92 degrees out during our stay and they handed a small 4" fan to make it "bearable" 2. The service all around was abysmal. We were set to stay for three evenings and just couldn't bear staying but the bare minimum there. The desk staff would not assist and made it almost impossible to cancel the remaining nights. 3. The location itself is scary. There are gates to the parking and we were warned to be careful with the unhoused population nearby as they can be aggressive. 4. The TV was a ROKU stick with basic service in 480. The internet WiFi did not function in the rooms and the front desk indicated that they only guarantee service in the lobby area. 5. Checkout was just as bad and was not even asked how we enjoyed our stay. Overall, avoid this place. Historic Inn that thankfully was taken over by Wyndham. I enjoy the ambiance of this hotel and the tutor style. I grew up in Eureka and always wanted to stay here. It's a step into yesteryear. read more

This place has a ton of history and so much potential but it's really just not worth it for the price. Wyndham has clearly made some effort to upgrade the rooms but the quality of those upgrades is pretty poor. It's about on par with what you'd expect from a basic clean motel, but for twice the price. The biggest detractors to this place were 1) the lack of reliable internet which meant the TV would cut in and out constantly. 2) there's no onsite lounge or restaurant, because they continue to be unable to staff it. It's far enough away from the downtown area (1/2 mile or so) that it's not super convenient to walk to any of the restaurants. 3) it would be great if they focused less on the famous dead people who stayed at the hotel in the 20th century and more on the living regular people staying here in the 21st century. Pros: - the parking lot across the street is locked from midnight to 6 am, so we didn't have any of the issues with car break-ins that other guests have had in the past - room was clean read more

Due to COVID I can't give an accurate rating but the place is opulent. I mean presidents and dignitaries have stayed there. I'm not sure why as there's really nothing to the small town. Maybe for fishing trips? It's pricey but it apparently is worth it to some. We're pretty simple and don't need much. But this place was really nice and from the looks all the other services would be as well. read more

A beautiful historic hotel with a stunning lobby and very comfortable room. It was so interesting to walk through the property and view the paintings and photos of famous celebrities, Presidents and others who had stayed there over the years. The check-in staff were welcoming and friendly. Our room was cozy and clean with a nice view over the swimming pool. Parking was convenient and we were grateful to finally stay at a hotel on our 9-day roadtrip that had an elevator. I highly recommend the Eureka Inn. read more

First and foremost. This is an old school hotel. That's what's so awesome about it lacking certain amenities. It's a time capsule and you're in it. Great way to disconnect from everything while you're there. Nice and quiet and completely opposite from the noise and craziness of Los Angeles. Loved it. read more

Traveling anywhere as a minority, you tend to take note of the attitude you encounter from owners and staff, not to mention the locals. Driving up to this town had me a bit worried as you drive up north, the less diversity you encounter. Receiving odd stares from locals is a normal occurrence when you're brown. At Eureka Inn, not once did I felt that to be an issue. Rachel is a super lovely host with such a positive attitude that now I am considering visiting this sleepy town. The rooms are beautiful, but I did not stay for the free breakfast. The decor is wonderful as well. I'll be staying here again for sure. read more

Cool historic building. If you have sensitivities to strong smells or mold, do not stay here. Pros: comfy bed, clean bathroom, free parking Cons: disengaged/cold staff, terrible strong air fresheners ALL OVER, cheap "free" breakfast, no microwave in room, no housekeeping at all, had to ask for and replenish my own towels, take out my own trash. Restaurants closed. This is a hotel charging $200/night hotel on the history alone. In reality, it's a 1-2 star budget hotel experience. read more

However historic this hotel is, the staff here is mediocre. Not too friendly and not too helpful and welcoming. With Covid nothing is open and there is one restaurant right across the street from the hotel if you want food. The parking lot area is small and then across the street is more parking behind the hotel. I am sure with Covid not being an issue we could really get the history and the food of this hotel to give a better review. read more

What a charming and groovy little place! For travelers who love history and unique hotels, we'd highly recommend this spot. The rooms were tastefully done and had the feel of a historic hotel. A couple of additional highlights are the lobby area and the many portraits of famous guests over the years. The folks who checked us in and out were also friendly, efficient, and informative. Also, this is in a great location - easy walking distance to the old downtown area and all of the unique shops nearby. read more

The TLDR: This near centurion hotel has had a good run, but ownership should really consider taking the insurance money if they have no intent for another 100 years. I should have heeded the reviews. STAY AWAY! Medical ALERT: IF YOU HAVE A BEDSIDE MEDICAL DEVICE, THERE IS NO NIGHTSTAND PLUG OUTLET. YOU'LL HAVE TO REARRANGE THE FURNITURE IF YOU WANT TO LIVE OR BRING AN EXTENSION CORD. Arrived midweek on a rainy night and thought would be a great stay to celebrate an anniversary. Located conveniently, the entrance is a less than convenient steep and narrow entranceway. While they have lots of luggage carts, you'll have to carry your bags up the stairs to the lobby first. Pack light, because you DON'T WANT TO LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR VEHICLE. (According to the reviews, the parking lot is a thieve's buffet) The lobby is exquisite. Nice historical artifacts, paintings of past guests from Reagan to Bogart to Spielberg. There's even a nice fireplace and old-school key box behind the front desk to give that old-school charm. Everything about this hotel says old school. The rooms probably haven't been refreshed since 1983, and it shows. Other hotels on the register have figured out how to update while maintaining nostalgia, The Eureka Inn does not dare go where others have succeeded. The rooms are quaint and appropriate for the motif, but they could benefit from an update of the electrical system to be able to have more outlets in the rooms. If you're a CPAP user, you might be out of luck for a night or two. The bright spot? The TV. Large screen, smart TV shows that there is the ability to modernize somewhat. Internet might be suspect though, so YMMV. All of the above makes the Eureka a solid 2.5* Where this hotel miserably fails is customer service and its policies. I truly wonder how much repeat business this hotel gets in the 21st century season after season? With rates that can quickly approach $500 and beyond, i was surprised to learn that, unlike most hotels where cancelation must occur before 11:59p on any or determined date before check-in, Eureka holds to a strict 24-hour policy. EXAMPLE: you check-in at 4p on night 1 of a 3-night reservation and decide upon check-in that you'll only be staying 1 night, and tell the desk upon check-in that you will not need the other 2 nights, you will STILL BE CHARGED FOR 2 NIGHTS OUT OF 3, even if you're only using 1, because it is not 24 hours before night 2 check-in. There is no written policy that states this for multi-night reservations for guests to view, even when asked and challenged. I didn't want to argue with the front desk agent, lest it be deemed that I was trespassing... and anyways, the clerk can't change policy, that's management. But I get it. I understand now why the policy has to be so restrictive. Instead of giving guests a reason to extend, you have to get as much from them as you can upfront because they'll want to bail right away. Personally, I feel that energy is misplaced. All I can say is Save your money and go elsewhere.. read more

The Eureka Inn - When you see this sign...just keep going. - Hotels Near Me - Eureka, California

So this place was hit or miss for me. Well, I know it boasts loads of history, the walls are lined with portraits of famous people that have stayed there over the years dating all the way back to the 1940s I want to say? It seems like they have put a fair amount of effort into preserving the hotel, but not as much effort in the basic rooms or in Certain important updates like carpets and paint. It wasn't a dive or anything, but I think we paid around $200 a night for a very basic room, with very basic amenities. I will say that furniture in the room was matching and solid wood, I think the countertop was perhaps granite in the bathroom? I would just expect a little more at that price point. There is no air conditioning but luckily Eureka isn't a super hot place being that it is coastal. It was my first time in Humboldt County, my husband went to Humboldt State, so he was very happy at the location of this hotel, as it was pretty central to all of the new, higher quality restaurants and boutiques in downtown. I think we got a discount price on the room, as I heard somebody else that was getting a room for the night paid $300. A few of the famous people that have stayed there over the years from Walt Disney, to Ronald Reagan, Gavin Newsom, and Steven Spielberg, my guess is they stayed in the presidential suites, I'd be very interested in seeing what those rooms looked like! read more

Family, friends and I stayed at Eureka Inn over graduation weekend. Go Humboldt Lumberjacks! The hotel is vintage and funky. Our rooms were surprisingly spacious. The lobby has big comfy furniture where there is a big cozy fireplace and they serve coffee and donuts every morning. Being 100 years old, the property shows a little wear and tear but is very clean and really charming. The staff went above and beyond for all the families celebrating their graduates and I look forward to returning! A big thank you to Eureka Inn for a lovely weekend. read more

The Eureka Inn is barely acceptable as a hotel, but unique enough to remember for years. This hotel is the largest redwood structure in the United States. It was made in the 1920's. And sadly it was at the height of cutting down the local giants. Not to mention the cleansing of local cultures. The lobby is much like a lido deck on a luxery cruise liner; historic post cards, non operable payphone and Roman sized fireplace that doesn't work anymore. The restaurants are sadly operated, and if someone got their heads out of their you-know-whats they would be awesome. The hotel is decorated with what appears to be liquidated furniture from bankrupt hotels that were designed in the 1970's with mostly pressed wood material. In a world where hotels are about exciting as Honda Civics, this hotel's unique (all be it frugally managed) design and historic landmark status makes it an easy choice to stay. Free parking in lot behind the hotel. Don't eat at the sushi/thai place across the street (ick!). Go to Bay Front, walkable distance. They have decent sushi, exciting tempenyaki, and fantastic views of the bay. read more

Stayed twice at this Inn. Lots of folk like the vintage vibe here. We thought the larger rooms with sitting areas were the best choice although you'll pay a bit more. Regular rooms are a little small, and both stays revealed few outlets, and a wide variation of views. All have mini fridges which are nice and beds are comfy. Comp Breakfast is pretty good too - we enjoyed it. One recent problem we encountered this stay was safety. We walked from the Inn towards Old town area and had a close encounter with a guy doing a tire burning U turn aimed at us - we felt like sitting ducks - no one else around - fortunately he took off when I pulled out my cell phone ready to call police. We just didn't feel safe walking near the Inn before 11am. read more

DO NOT STAY AT THE EUREKA INN 1) 2021 jeep, not even 1 week old, broken into and ALL of our camping stuff stolen 2) front desk saw theft on video and didn't stop people in act 3) we had to call the police; hotel very unhelpful. They basically hid. 4) we were provided with a number for a woman named Stephanie... she was supposed to help us as we were told she was the general manager. I'm still unsure of Stephanie's title as she informed us a woman named Maggie was the GM. Maggie was apparently aware of the break in but was running her personal errands and was to call us back... it's been a week. No word from Maggie or Stephanie (who we spoke to directly and was 100% aware of our situation) 5) it occurred in the parking lot of the hotel 6) both the police officer writing report and Stephanie said crime rates are VERY high in eureka, the city is aware but hotel made absolutely no mention upon check in. 7) laundry until 11-12am with the walls shaking and banging 8) run down hotel 9) no breakfast and bar closed due to COVID, which other hotels have resumed or modified to continue to provide This is a notorious base city for backpackers and campers due to its access to humbolt county and the redwoods. If crime has been such an issue it would have been a nice tip for the front desk to mention and reiterate as camping gear is heavy and there's a lot of it when hauling it from your car to hotel. DO NOT stay at this hotel and I would be very cautious of where you stay in the city. Very unsafe, so do your research. read more

Looking back on it, I would have GLADY stayed at Motel 6. In my 27 years of life I have never been in such a run down establishment. Of course, this hotel has incredible history but they fail to maintain it. Starting off, the room was around 300 dollars on a Thursday and a very similar price Friday. (Yikes) I assumed the price point meant we were staying at a good facility. I love all the other Wyndham hotels I've stayed at. The rooms are TINY. (We had two double beds) and there was barely enough room to store our items in the closet, drawers, etc. We were only taking a three day trip so it's not like we had that much stuff. The smell is that of someone chain smoking cigarettes in their room while the stock market crashes in the 20's. It was so musty, I've never been in such an "old" smelling building. The bathrooms didn't have a vent or any sort of air circulation. A great way to add to the musty smell. The windows opened entirely.... I have a four year old and we were on the third floor. I was mortified. There are no breakfast amenities. I asked to cancel my Friday reservation immediately upon walking in. We arrived early on Thursday and they told me they didn't a full day to cancel for the next day. I was not told of their cancellation policy on the phone and I wasn't going to leave a room I spent 300$ for. read more

I wish there was a zero star option. - i stood for 20 min at the front desk until someone showed up to check me in. Not so much as an apology, or I hope you weren't waiting for long. First words out of her mouth: "do you have a reservation?". - TV in the room didn't work - at midnight the walls started shaking as if a washing machine was vibrating the whole room. Calling front desk got zero response. - parking lot with glass all over the ground which looking at previous reviews, it appears cars are getting broken into. I have stayed in motels that were far superior for half the price. Terrible establishment that's trying to use the historic aspect of the hotel without any attempt of customer service or maintaining a standard. read more

Had a very comfortable stay, loved the character and history of this hotel! Beautiful lobby! Portraits of past guests line the walls, from Presidents to movie stars. Very fun to imagine Winston Churchill and Carrie Fisher being there! (Not at the same time) Staff was very friendly and professional upon check in and check out. I appreciated that they had a list printed out at the front desk showing the nearby restaurants open during the pandemic. The desk clerk was able to tell me which ones had just opened for indoor dining. Don't come here expecting perfection. It has charm, history and character, plus a friendly staff! Recently had a pleasant stay at the Eureka Inn in downtown Eureka. While the scenery has no doubt changes, from gardens to parking lots, the building itself maintains a lot of its famous charm. Our experience at the Eureka Inn was not good. The facility is an historic building with a lot of potential. But it is currently being operated on a shoestring with inexperienced staff. The restaurant and bar look interesting, but are closed. Our room was rudimentary and had a few issues. The TV was not set up and we had to request a tech to come and get it to communicate with the cable input. Further, the toilet seat was not affixed properly and we had to request repair which only sort of worked. The breakfast consisted of stale baked goods and pedestrian coffee. The front desk was not staffed in the morning for checkout. This hotel is an historic treasure and deserves better. I hope things improve. read more

Great place to visit; however, wouldn't want to stay here again. I love the 1920's mock Tudor lounge, and the service is great but I had the worst sleep of this year on the extremely firm bed. Mind you, I love a firm bed. This bed was much more akin to sleeping on the floor. In fact, I probably would have slept better on the carpet. The good news is that they give you four pillows. The bad news is that they are about 1/3 the size of a normal pillow so it works out to about 1 and 1/3 pillow. The room has dated furniture but that's to be expected in a period hotel. It would have been a bit more charming if the dated furniture had replicated the style of the 1920's, instead of the 1990's. We didn't get to see the bar due to the pandemic, but like I said before, I'd come here to have a drink in the lounge. We also didn't get to use the pool. It's really cold in Eureka--even in late July. I don't see how useful the pool could be. read more

The hotel is really cool and historic. However, front desk representation is either lazy or incompetent. I tried to cancel my second night of stay 48 hours before my reservation. Reception at the Eureka Inn told me they cannot help me, that I need to contact Hotels.com. Upon arrival, I informed the front desk, again, that I will not be staying a second night. She told me she cannot help me. Now, hotels.com asked for a waiver from Eureka Inn to process my refund. The Eureka Inn said NO. To the manager and front desk representation, please allow for my waiver for a refund. You have a lovely hotel, and are ruining it with you service. read more

I would not recommend this place. Rooms are cramped and uncomfortable, with no microwave (it's a shared one down in a conference room off the lobby). Other reviews have mentioned a lack of electrical outlets in the rooms. For hot water we had to use the bathtub. Getting hot water from the sink required letting water run for several minutes. As a test, I started the hot water and called the front desk. After several minutes we got tepid water. The desk clerk never answered. Another major complaint is the misleading website, which mentions and shows a nice breakfast with eggs. In reality, it's coffee and a donut. We expected a breakfast but had to go elsewhere, which sucked time from our day. Apparently this bait and switch is not new. I mean, they can put updated COVID restrictions on the website but they can't edit their misleading breakfast? The parking is on an adjacent, unsecure parking lot in downtown Eureka. The staff says it has video cameras which has monitors in a room behind the front desk, where staff usually is not. At least one previous review mentions a car burglary. We took everything out of the car and brought it into the room. I mean everything (my partner said no to the spare tire). Yes, there are old pictures and furniture in the lobby but how does that improve your stay, your comfort or your security? We really hoped to cancel our reservation but we were stuck, according to the desk clerk, because we didn't cancel soon enough. We asked to have the manager contact us about at least a partial refund (breakfast) but haven't heard back yet. We did cancel our subsequent nights and stayed elsewhere in a hotel that was much, much, much better. read more

If I could give it a zero star review I would. We "checked in" over the 4th weekend. Wife went up to the room and it was filthy. Went down to the "manager" and asked for a refund. Nope wouldn't do it. Said we opened the door therefore we were required to pay the whole amount. What?! So they could literally not clean the room you open the door and they charge you the full amount. We said whatever went to another hotel down the road. This place needs to be condemned and forget about parking. Stay away. read more

Main reason for 3 stars is the awful parking situation. I was fortunate to find a spot early, but many had to park their cars OUTSIDE THE HOTEL.... This town is riddled with homeless and other wackos, so putting your car on the side of the street is preposterous. Stayed only 1 night, heard two psychos making a scene, checked out my window and they are inches away from the lot. Saw other reviews warning to lock cars, and boy were they spot on. Ridiculous considering this is a massive 4 story building. *personally, I think a minor solution to this would be gates on the perimeter of the parking lot. The lot is relatively small anyways and I think more customers would feel at ease knowing their car won't be hijacked. Additional comments: Pros - spectacular history, alongside interior for the lobby - coffee was nice. nothing special, just drinkable. - double sink, made the morning easy breezy Cons - Shower was a joke. There was little to no water pressure to even rinse my body. Also, not the biggest dealbreaker, but the toilet is misaligned (why? I don't have a clue, it was a good chuckle though) - only 1 charging outlet, next to the air conditioner Like previous reviews said, this hotel is stuck in its 'old charm' and has been clinging onto it forever. They take pride in previous guests, but haven't progressed whatsoever. Many appliances (not all listed above) need upgrading. Ridiculous for its pricing. Overall, don't recommend. Honestly, get out of Eureka as a whole, it's a complete dump. read more

Historic hotel with a nice character, good location, semi-friendly staff, not very good breakfast.

Looks nice on the outside and lobby has old school charm. If you need the pretension to enjoy your stay you'll love this old, dilapidated dump. There is no Wi-Fi in your room or barely anywhere else on property. The elevator wasn't working so we had to drag our bags up to the third floor. The walls are paper thin, the shower head is at chin height and you have to shower in a dark cramped bathroom. The water pressure is great though. So much pressure it comes out of the shower head and faucet at the same time. Fortunately the drainage was good or it would have overflowed the tub. Glad I didn't pay a huge amount for my stay, but still feel ripped off. read more

Every couple of years I go to Eureka with friends to do some motorcycle riding in the area. We usually stay at one of the chain motels along 101, which has led us to believe Eureka doesn't really have much going for it. This trip I decided to try something different. I found the Eureka Inn and it wasn't that much more expensive than some of the chain places so I figured I'd give it a shot. Glad I did and I'll be back. The girl at the front desk was delightful. I have a bit of a sarcastic sense of humor and she took notice of that as I bantered with my traveling companions and was able to engage in a way that was fun. She knew a lot about Eureka in terms of places to eat and drink, which was great because we usually just end up at the Lost Coast Brewery and I was tired of that. The complimentary breakfast was nice to have available, although it would have been nice to have a waffle maker or something for a hot item. Northern California coastal towns typically don't need AC in the rooms as it gets quite cool at night (and sometimes during the day). Opening the windows cooled the room off nicely. The Inn has a small lounge that was great for a before- and after-dinner drink. Every staff member we met was polite and more than willing to engage in a friendly conversation. read more

This hotel has an interesting history and a very cool looking vintage lobby. The hotel was clean and the beds and pillows were comfortable. The bathroom looked like a brand new remodel. They also have a nice pool, but it's not heated. Although the building is old, they do have an elevator and that's definitely a plus. I felt safe in this hotel, despite there being homeless people everywhere in Eureka. I made sure I removed all valuables from the car and left nothing in sight that might tempt someone to break the window. It was a little unnerving to see a man living in his van on the hotel parking lot. I didn't complain because I figured nothing would be done. There is no air conditioning. I understand Eureka typically has cool weather, but the room was stuffy. We opened the window, but as soon as it was closed the stuffiness returned. The drapes also let in WAY too much light. They need room darkening drapes. I would definitely stay in this hotel again, but if able I would choose a place with a/c and better drapes. It was difficult to sleep with light pouring into the room at the crack of dawn. read more

My husband and I enjoy staying at historic lodges in national parks. So, I was pleased to find this historic inn not in a national park. I think modern hotels are sterile, characterless, and basic places. The room was very clean and quiet, though I could hear people quietly talking. I've noticed that back then they built walls thinner than today's standards. I think people who appreciate historic structures are very courteous. Comfortable bed and four small pillows! The room temperature was just right. There was a coffee maker and fridge. I was surrounded by historic images of the redwood forest and people, so I decided to drive the Avenue of the Giants. I visited the state park Visitor Center and took a walk in one of the forest loops. Very restorative. The breakfast was standard with various types of bread, hard boiled eggs, bananas, yogurt, cereal, and good coffee. The great room was the best with its fine old wood working, faux fireplace, portraits of famous people who stayed there, and overstuffed leather chairs all around. I came down to read by the fireplace and an employee came over and turned on the fireplace. I caught myself dozing. It was so relaxing. Another employee said she loved the hotel. I think caring for historic structures is more than the commercial aspect of running a hotel. It's got to be a work of love, an appreciation for history, and things not disposable. I'd recommend removing the TV, adding writing desks, historic postcards, and tastier tea to further enhance the ambiance of the place. Also, I recommend the Humboldt Bay cruise on the Madaket. Really worth the price. There are great places to eat in Eureka like Ramones Bakery, Restaurant 301, and a waterfront dive known locally as VD. All in all, I find the people in Eureka kind and helpful. A shoutout to the local police and the folks at the Enterprise counter, and snack bar. I loved stepping down on the tarmac at the Arcata Airport. Eureka Inn does things just right! I hope to be back soon. read more

I had a wonderful experience at this hotel, it's unique and charming--like some of the old hotels you find in London or Paris--not at all like a chain hotel with cookie-cutter rooms. I made a reservation at another hotel, but they cancelled it before I arrived. It was 9:30PM, and everything in town was sold out. I called The Eureka Inn and they had a room available. I was greeted warmly by the receptionist, she asked if I was a member of AAA or other groups in order to get a discounted room. I was so happy that I wouldn't have to sleep in my car that I would have paid double, so a discount was very appreciated. My room was lovely--a plush king-size bed, a comfy chair perfect for sitting while reading, watching TV, or writing a review of the hotel! In spite of the fact that the room faced the street it was amazingly quiet. I couldn't hear traffic, other guests, or the elevator. I'll spend some time here tomorrow checkout the lobby and reading the plaques under the photos of the other famous guests (besides me!) who stayed here. I wonder if I'm staying in the same room that Winston Churchill slept in, or Walt Disney, or Ronald Reagan. My misfortune of having my reservation cancelled by a different hotel was such a blessing--otherwise I wouldn't have had this wonderful experience. So disappointed in the Eureka Inn. Having grown up in Humboldt I remember this establishment from being a kid. After we checked in, the front desk charged my card too much money. When I noticed it on my credit card, I called. The woman at the front desk told me they were too busy to charge the correct amount or to explain the charges. She actually yelled at me. This hotel absolutely takes you back in time. If you do not appreciate old world charm and the times that built this country that we live in then you may give this architectural gem a poor review. However if you have a true passion and love for the United States and its history, you will feel so very comfortable here and even elegant. As I lay here in a king suite at 1:30 am, after 12 hours on a very foggy & stressful drive up route 1 and 101 from southern CA, I am in shock. I rang the bell at 12:30 am and your staff so promptly and kindly answered, immediately let me in, booked my room while giving me a quick history lesson on the property and Im about to enjoy a very peaceful slumber in a very quiet room.
