We stayed in the Basecamp and it was absolutely awesome. From the moment we pulled behind the gate and parked our car we were in awe. The owners did a good job on the landscape and nailed the oasis feel. The more we walked around the little compound the more we discovered and the more we loved this little private hotel. We will most definately be returning.

An unusual color scheme

I'm certain that this property is just right for some people. Soaking tubs and a landscape of ferns and bamboo and moss. There is a hippie vibe. However, I'm a senior now with mobility issues. All transactions are on your computer or phone. There is no one to greet you, or help you if you need assistance. You receive entry codes on your email, and then you get to figure out which code is for which transaction. I managed to figure out how to open the car gate and took one of the 4 secure parking places . I was lucky and got one of the spaces. Then I had to handle my luggage and get to my room. Fortunately, an employee's dog happened to get out and she accidentally met me. At that point, she actually did assist me to my room. The key was in a box with a code and the stairs were difficult. I walked in to find incense blowing in the room. The decor was unusual and in colors that were more jarring than welcoming. Rules for the kitchen: wash your own dishes. Does that mean that I would be using dishes washed by the previous occupant? Is there ice? Only if the previous occupant filled the ice cube tray. The shower was nice and large and dark. No top sheet on the bed, just a duvet, and it was actually comfy. I was afraid to use kitchen items as I paid a deposit. I had no map of the grounds to find the hot tub and sauna. There was a multi-paged book of instructions and information. I was not willing to go out for food and lose my protected parking space. My stay felt like staying with a grumpy and demanding old fashioned aunt with rules that keep you from making any kind of disorder.

Bathroom sink. Unbelievable

This is the best kept secret in Arcata. Loved everything about The Front Porch. It was magical. i can't say enough about how much we enjoyed ourselves. I would recommend The Front Porch to anyone looking for a quaint quiet extraordinary place to stay. You will just wish that you could stay longer

Our only regret is checking in pretty late in the evening and not having time to hang out another day! An absolutely beautiful property. As soon as you walk in you feel like you've entered a fairytale land.

Taped remote

I stayed here on a work trip while in the area. The inn is old and needs some updating. The $260 per night after tax rate for one person on a weeknight was not a good value in my experience. The photos and overly generous/complimentary 5 star reviews lead you to expect a nice relaxing resort but it did not meet my expectations. The neighborhood is a bit dreary and I felt I could not leave anything visible in my car when parking on the street overnight. The sauna was a big factor in choosing this place but was broken when I arrived and when I left. The bathroom sink was cracked and should be replaced, the light switch was broken, the remotes for the lights/fans were taped to hold the batteries in, furniture was in poor condition, TV did not have any service and so on. The garden was nice but not overly impressive and also small. The inn is close to the Arcata Marsh which is convenient for a nice morning walk.

Lush garden outside our room.

I'm glad I didn't read any reviews prior to making our reservations for the Independence Day weekend. We had a lovely stay and experienced none of the negatives that other Yelpers complained about. Yes, the prices are on the high side and the breakfast offerings are sub-par. However, we found our room to be clean and quite comfortable. The amazing thing about the property is the presence of the outdoor tub grottoes. Someone put a serious amount of time and energy into creating their vision for relaxing spaces. This is the primary reason for staying at this establishment. The grottoes are first come first served but we always found a space when we looked. Location is a few blocks from downtown Arcata with a great Saturday farm market. Adjust your expectations and relax. We did and enjoyed ourselves very much.

I've now stayed here twice It is literally the only hotel in…read moredowntown Arcata. It is walking distance to my son's dorm room. It is walking distance to restaurants, coffee, shops, and bars It is walking distance to lovely hikes in the redwoods and walks along the arcata Marsh. There are Airbnb's in the area, which I may try one day, who knows There are other hotels that are really close by car. Either two exits north or about 10 minutes south in Eureka. I chose this because of location It is over 100 years old Although some may say it needs updating, I think it's kept some of the old charm yet the beds are comfortable. The rooms are clean and the service is spectacular. Everybody who works here is extremely kind No, you're not getting a five diamond resort, which I do prefer. I generally stay at higher end Marriott properties, but that is not an option in this town. I see people saying negative things about noise and homeless. As far as that goes, I've been lucky enough to have rooms facing inside versus the street so noise has not been an issue. The walls are not them, but the gaps under the doors and the thin windows are a factor. Yes they are homeless but they're different from what I see in Southern California down here. The homeless are scary in Arcata. The homeless are fun and interesting to talk to and super kind. I do park my car outside on the street and while I usually am afraid that something will happen in my car I'm not afraid here. Yes, they have a breakfast that's included, but really don't waste your time. I tried it one day thought about trying at the second day and then decided to find somewhere else to eat. Take a chance You will either hate it or love it

I lived in Arcata for many years and have visited a lot in the last 25 and always have chosen to…read morestay at the Hotel Arcata mainly because of its central location and the claw foot bathtubs. Unfortunately, due to my most recent experience being so awful, I will never return and I also strongly urge you to find another option for yourself. To start I had booked a room for my friend and I for 3 nights. It was a room with a queen bed and an office space which they say on their own website there's room for a rollaway bed. I made sure to contact the hotel the morning of our arrival and requested a rollaway bed. We arrived that evening and checked in without a hitch. I'm well familiar with the challenging parking situation and that the plaza gets a bit rowdy so those things weren't an issue for us. When we get to the room there is no rollaway, ok, a bit annoying but the young woman at the front desk was super nice and told us she would get it and set it up. Cool. We went to get some food at Don's and I was looking forward to taking a nice hot bath when we returned. When I turned on the hot water I got only cold, I tried running sink trying to get it but the sink wouldn't drain properly so I kept having to turn it off. Back to the tub, I ran it for an excessively long amount of time and still no hot water so I gave up and retired to my rollaway bed. The one they provided me must have previously been a trampoline for a caffeinated 5 year old, it was shaped weird and very uncomfortable and I felt like I was in a taco. Also the boilers (aka radiators) made crazy sounds all night and while we went to bed freezing we both woke up in the middle of the night to an extremely uncomfortably hot situation. Even with all this, we didn't complain and we're going to sit out our three day stay. However, in the early afternoon of the third day while I was sleeping, my friend who has breast cancer, was preparing some marijuana cigarettes for us to enjoy later that day, unfortunately she needed a plunger for the toilet and she called the front the man who arrived was not friendly at all, she told him she would do the plunging (since I was sleeping on the rollaway right next to the bathroom) and he abruptly informed her that if we got caught smoking weed, we would be charged $500. She told him ok. Once again, we were NOT smoking weed, we had purchased some locally and also had devices to partake of it. I guess the man, we'll call him Charles, saw or smelled something and just assumed because less than 10 minutes later we got a phone call from the front desk telling us that we will not be charged, but we had one hour to vacate the premises. I asked to speak to the manager, named Sherri and she was supposedly unavailable for that entire hour while we now had to pack up all of our stuff and find a new place and also wait out the fact that this happened before standard check in times so we had our entire car packed back up and had to wait over an hour before we could check into our new (much better) location at an Airbnb 2 blocks away. We also had reservations at Larapin Café for 5 o'clock, but since this happened at around two, it left us not enough time and so we had to reschedule our dinner reservation which was very inconvenient because we were also attending an event I had paid for at Richards Goat Tavern which we now had to miss in favor of our dinner reservation. Pretty unbelievable seeing as the hotel is located in Arcata and its reputation for the wacky Tabaccy... also the cherry on top being that upon walking out of the establishment we were greeted by a massive cloud of pot smoke lol. I would've welcomed an adult conversation with either Charles or Sherri but apparently both of them are cowards who would rather let the front desk people do their dirty work. Also worth mentioning is Charles brings his daughter to work and allows her to roll full body down the ONLY staircase as people are trying to come and go. I hope his low wage position is worth him ruining someone's plans without a reason. As for Sherri, I invite you to read the many negative reviews she has received via google and how unprofessionally she responds to them. BUT, If you like cold showers, no refrigerator, no hair dryer, uncomfortable sleeping arrangements, noisy neighbors, being aggressively panhandled, the smell of weed and rude management, the Hotel Arcata is definitely your place.

I thought it looked great online. I was very surprised when we arrived to see dead grass, weeds, dilapidated RVs, potholes, and broken down outbuildings. We have a 38' motorhome towing a jeep, as I told them when I made reservations. The spot was much too small anyway. We found a spit that worked and the gal in the office made some changes to make it work. Much appreciated. We did not stay all the nights we paid for. This park is full of long term residents that had there spots looking so over grown with weeds and one RV the full 4 days we were there was leaking water out the back. I knocked on the door no answer and this is why I was going to the office. I do not normally see water pouring from a RV. I was hoping it wasn't flooded. The people next to us left after one day because it was so disgusting and dirty. This place is such a missed opportunity of a great place to stay. It is small enough to be redone and revamped.

When I went to complain to the man at the front desk he was extremely rude and would not refund me my money. He came up to the room and inspected it and accused me of "using" the room because I checked the bedsheets. There's no A/C. It's extremely loud. It's way overpriced. He was friendly and personable. With that being said, he is the only reason to stop here. We showed up in the middle of the night really tired (I woke up that way too) because this was the place with the room available. The other places we checked were all brooked. The room feels like something that still lives in the 50's (and at night the Bates Motel flashed through my mind). I can deal with it being old, although a remodel wouldn't hurt, but the springs you can feel in the bed, the bad paint, the mold in the cracks of the shower, the heater that wouldn't quite turn off during summer, the lack of an AC unit, the window that wouldn't open more than 2 inches and mess that is the parking lot during the day are not what I look for when I look for hotels. On the plus side, while the room felt like bugs would be crawling everywhere I did not see a single bug/spider. It had a fridge and microwave, although it wasn't plugged in. The shower had decent pressure. It has free wifi. I don't plan on staying here again and I wouldn't recommend it. I would recommend staying on the road a bit longer and paying an extra $20-$30 to get a nicer room elsewhere. The room was $100 but for what you get I wouldn't pay over $50.

We booked through a third party and were NOT warned that the hotel is undergoing MAJOR remodeling, top to bottom, end to end. I was not even informed by hotel staff, when I called ahead for confirmation that our room would be in a quiet area of the hotel. When we arrived, the lobby was filled with scaffolding sitting on cement floors, electricians, tile setters, carpet installers, and other construction workers. We felt sorry for the receptionists sitting at their folding table, explaining that the construction activity would start between 9 & 10 AM and end late afternoon. (It did NOT. The noise and banging started at 7:30 AM and one night, continued until past 10:30 PM when I called the front desk.) Before checking in, we WERE allowed to look at our room, which was efficient, large, newly refurbished, clean, and quiet (while we were looking at the room). The typical chain-hotel breakfast was offered, while workers were moving large rolls of carpeting around and through the room. Trays were provided to take breakfasts back to the room, as there was no seating in the lobby or breakfast area. So! If you're considering a stay at this hotel, call ahead and ask if ALL remodeling is completed, unless you don't mind a stay in a construction zone.
