In fact, everytime I capture a wedding in Redwoods NP, I come to this spot. The rooms definitely feel older, but are so cozy and have everything you need. The property is beautiful and surprisingly peaceful for being in town. The hot tubs and sauna are probably the best part, second only to the unique setting and rich gardens. The beds were comfortable, with four pillows on each of the queen beds. There were plenty of outlets to charge devices. The shower had great pressure, and there were plenty of towels for both of us. There were guests next to us, but we never heard them. We did hear people jumping up and down in the room above us, but I can't fault the hotel for that.... We did not eat the free breakfast here, but it looked tasty and there were enough options to satisfy us if we had chosen to eat here. We brought our own food. Parking was free and close to our room.

We booked through a third party and were NOT warned that the hotel is undergoing MAJOR remodeling, top to bottom, end to end. I was not even informed by hotel staff, when I called ahead for confirmation that our room would be in a quiet area of the hotel. When we arrived, the lobby was filled with scaffolding sitting on cement floors, electricians, tile setters, carpet installers, and other construction workers. We felt sorry for the receptionists sitting at their folding table, explaining that the construction activity would start between 9 & 10 AM and end late afternoon. (It did NOT. The noise and banging started at 7:30 AM and one night, continued until past 10:30 PM when I called the front desk.) Before checking in, we WERE allowed to look at our room, which was efficient, large, newly refurbished, clean, and quiet (while we were looking at the room). The typical chain-hotel breakfast was offered, while workers were moving large rolls of carpeting around and through the room. Trays were provided to take breakfasts back to the room, as there was no seating in the lobby or breakfast area. So! If you're considering a stay at this hotel, call ahead and ask if ALL remodeling is completed, unless you don't mind a stay in a construction zone.

It is dark inside and smells "old". Our room was nicely decorated in old Victorian. It was overlooking the corner of 2nd & C right over the Irish pub. Everything was clean and nice inside. Bathroom was small but well stocked with supplies. The issue is more with the area. We took a walk after we arrived through the marina and old town area and concluded that we didn't feel terribly safe. We decided to stay in after dark. There were plenty of homeless and very "sketchy" people walking around talking loudly to themselves, etc. Know the rooms have no air conditioning so the hosts opened a couple of windows facing C street, which we left open all night, hoping that street wouldn't be terribly noisy. Fortunately, the Irish pub below us closes around 9:00, and the Mexican restaurant across the street was the same. By 9:30 or so the street was very quiet with only the occasional car and lone, loud motorcycle around midnight. Also there is no TV in the room, so bring your own entertainment! The WiFi didn't work either. We couldn't find the WiFi the hosts provided on check in. Overall, this area of town is trying to revive and the hosts are trying to bring back this hotel. Just be aware!

If you must you can have take-out from the decent (but really just townie pub fare) restaurant downstairs but you're in walking distance from some truly great restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and fabulous bagels. Then again, the downstairs restaurant has one of the better bloody mary's on the planet, although one of the spicy ones. The red velvet Victorian settee in the bay window overlooks the bay and you can watch everything below your floor disappear into the dense fog as you ignore the outside world for the cozy interior and dreamily disappearing exterior.

I have stayed at two of them: the Plaza Courtyard Stay and Rose Court Cottage. Plaza Courtyard was an absolutely enormous space, with a full kitchen, bedroom, living room, dining table, and large handicapped-accessible bathroom. When I checked in, we had to use a combination we had been given ahead of time in order to get into the courtyard and the room. There were numbers to call in case of emergency, but otherwise, I was on my own--which was fine with me. The location was excellent, right off the main plaza. There was free and very good wifi. The bed was very comfortable, and everything I needed was available. Rose Court Cottage was a different experience. It is a very small cottage attached to the owner's home. It does have a beautiful rose courtyard, but that courtyard adjoins the windows to the owner's home, and when the weather is nice she opens her windows, so there really isn't any privacy. In addition, there is a door in the bathroom that leads directly into the owner's home, and you can't lock it from the guest side. The cottage was very cute and well-appointed, with lots of books and travel guides, as well as free and good wifi. The cottage is across the street from the local market, which was very convenient, and a short walk from the downtown plaza. However, we were really weirded out by the close proximity to the owner. When she let us in and showed us around, she even said, "I'll just let myself out here" and walked out of our bathroom. All in all, both of these were good stays, with very comfortable beds and lots of the comforts of home, and a decent value. However, if I go back, I will choose the Plaza Courtyard for more privacy.

I stayed in two while visiting before permanently relocating to the area. Forest View was an amazing experience. Very private with a deck and beautiful views of the redwoods in the distance. I loved the gas stove and, although I didn't use them, all of the cooking amenities. Rose Cottage, however, was completely different. While it was very convenient, located directly across from the fabulous Wildberries Market, there was very little privacy, as the other reviewer noted. I felt quite strange showering, while I could hear other people cooking on the other side of the bathroom door. The space was very small and musty. I would highly recommend staying at Forest View and I'm curious about Gateway and Sweet Home Stay, which I imagine are closer in quality to Forest View.
