My family and I have stayed at the View Crest at least three or four times in the past and have always found it welcoming and pleasant. Our daughter is now grown up, so for the first time in nineteen years my wife and I were able to get away on our own for an anniversary vacation. In the past, we usually ended up in the fourth unit-- which is perfect for families of three-- but this time we stayed in the ninth unit, which has a wonderful jet sauna, a VERY comfortable king bed, a large kitchen area, and a very nice couch for hanging out after a long day beach combing or wandering in the redwoods. Every time we have stayed at the View Crest, the staff has always been friendly and accommodating and this visit continued that trend. I should add that the lodge is located very near to the redwood tree parks (my favorite being Prairie Creek), Su-Meg State Park, and Trinidad State Beach-- all of which makes for many days of enjoyable hiking and wandering. My only complaint about the View Crest is all their units are often completely booked! We look forward to our next stay. read more

The staff are so communicative and sweet and love the little included breakfast that was delivered to us the night before so we could enjoy early in the morning. Unit 1: good: A spacious deck. You can see through the porch rails, so it seems open. The unit is elevated and offers good privacy. Spacious unit! Great photographic art! Everything you may want for your cooking needs (except salt and pepper which they gave us little packets when we asked them about that). Great towels, bath goods. Comfy bed except for the note below* about the bed arrangement. Great grounds, we walked up to the RV park and looked around there, too. Helpful staff. They responded quickly when we complained about being unable to turn off the deck light (we wanted to sit out at night). It turned out all the other units' lights kind of shine into the night, so star gazing was out. Brand new shower, sink, faucets. The heater works super-fast! Bad: *Unit 1 has only 1 very small side table/nightstand with a lamp next to the King bed. The person on the other side has no nightstand or lamp. The wall side of bed is hard to get past- it's very close to the wall. The pillows are too soft for sitting up in bed to read. They use lower quality toilet paper and tissues. On our second stay, we had Unit 2: Good: Again, great photographic art! The bed-side tables were large and there were lights on both sides of the bed. We didn't use the kitchen so, no comment on that. We were able to unscrew the deck light for the night (but alas, it was cloudy so we couldn't see the stars!). We liked the kitchen bar set up as our eating and board game playing area. The bench in bathroom was convenient for storing our suitcase. Bad: The deck has low solid fencing so you cannot see the ocean when sitting on their low chairs. The shower had poor pressure and leaked after shut-off. I guess it's nice to offer coffee in the unit but it was with a Keurig machine, which is very bad for the environment. Unit 1 needs shelf in shower for soap, OR, putting refillable liquid soap in shower would be great! The small containers of shampoo, etc. were nice, but not earth friendly. The light on nightstand awkward to turn on and off. I would like cast iron ware instead of the non-stick stuff. They leave a new sponge or each guest at check in. The dish soap has a super strong smell, YUCK! Their free breakfast is not good for vegans...or people who like to eat healthy. It would be nice to have an instruction book inside the unit so you know how to operate a gas stove, the fireplace, etc. In the book it would be really nice if they also listed local businesses and hiking trails read more

I have stayed here a few times since 1995, in varying capacities, and it's always been very nice. The first time was just a mere camping site, and the most recent was a private cottage. The staff/service is excellent, providing many surprise amenities you would not expect, and the cottage itself was cozy, comfortable, and very relaxing. Highly recommend the cottages with private jacuzzis to unwind after a day's adventuring! The kitchenettes in the cottages are a little sparse for specialty cooking on your own, so keep that in mind and bring your own sauces/spices, etc. But overall, this was just a great place to stay--again. My only complaint is that they've got the cheapest Keurig coffee, absolutely undrinkable, and only powdered coffeemate instead of half-and-half, but they do have a kettle, so next time I'll just bring my own coffee and filter. read more

Booked this through Airbnb. One of the few decent places with an affordable price tag on it. And the service fees were covered. The only mishap was the check in process as the ad on Airbnb said anytime after 8AM, but in reality, check in isn't until after 2p. The staff were apologetic and did their quickest to turn over the room. It wasn't a huge deal since we went to explore instead and didn't get back until 5pm anyway. But I appreciated their communication and urgency of getting the room ready. Their breakfast diner is closed. Instead they give you a list of things you want delivered to your door the night of your check in for the next day. Simple things like cereal, bagels, kcups, milk, yogurt, etc. It was delivered to our door at 8pm and we had a mini fridge to keep the perishables, a toaster for the morning and a microwave. That was a nice bonus. Parking is right in front of your door on a dirt hill and shared with your neighbor. So here's to hoping your neighbor isn't a dick and gives you room to park too. I would def stay here again. The heater was small but mighty. The bed was hella comfy and had hella pillows. We had our own patio. The place was clean and I have OCD so I was impressed. Plenty of towels. 1 hr away from Fern canyon, 30+. min to Lady Bird Johnson Grove, 1 hr 30 min from Grove of Titans. read more

Lovely inn just north of Trinidad proper close to the water and surrounded by trees, with easy access to parks and beaches. Friendly and efficient check-in to a large cabin that was completely clean and had all the amenities we needed. Breakfast is no longer in their small eating nook by the office but is brought to you the evening before after you fill out a checklist of items. Keurig coffeemaker, toaster, microwave, refrigerator are all included in the cabin. A tad expensive but then so is every place in the area. Highly recommended for a stay in Trinidad and surroundings. read more

We loved everything about our stay at View Crest. Warmly greeted by the caring staff, the charming visual appeal of cabins & lush garden (including blooms of large late-season rhododendrons) outside was transcended upon entering the tastefully updated interior. Smart layout, fully stocked kitchenette, and we liked the sentimental barn door to the bedroom. The patio (seals barking in the distance) , and then our private hot tub, were awesome features. The ample customized "substitute" breakfast, delivered to our door, enhanced our enjoyment of a short overnight stay. All of Trinidad, and the amazing Patrick's Point, is available nearby. Really nice cabin. Basic and somewhat rustic, but very clean, nice and functional. We booked the 2BR cabin in the front as it was all they had left, and I would not recommend that. First, it is only a few feet from the road, and has a giant lighted sign in front of the bedroom window - which was so bright that we switched bedrooms to the back of the cabin. They did eventually turn off that sign, but it was late - after we had turned in. Also, there was NO view - there is a road and a stand of trees, then maybe 1/4 mile past there is the ocean. Maybe some of the cabins at the top have something of a view, but we had nothing. Having said that it was clean, comfortable, and interesting, and if back in the area, I would definitely stay again. It would be a super-fun place for a trip with a couple of kids, friends, etc. I liked it, regardless of the sign and the view. read more

What a great find on our trip up the coast. This is a very special place to spend the night or settle in for a longer time to explore this beautiful area! We were greeted by very upbeat and engaging manager, who gave us wonderful tips on places to see and restaurants to try. What was so nice is that the units are separate or two to a building, scattered among the trees with nice grassy areas. We settled into our room that felt like home. The bed and chair were both comfortable. We had a mini kitchen with a sink, microwave, refrigerator and a Keurig 1 cup coffee maker. The room had a deck with a small view of the ocean where we watched a beautiful sunset. All the recommendations were spot on, from the great dinner at the Eatery and a walk down to the lighthouse(a replication of the original one.) One recommendation would be to approach the Lodge from the north on exit 734 which is a smooth road compared to exit 731, which has some very rough spots. read more

COMFY, COZY LODGING close to Redwood National Park & Trinidad State Beach. Stayed here 2 nights in cottage #6 in early June. Easy access with 2 choices for exits from the 101fwy: exit 734, Patrick's Point Dr. or exit 731, Seawood Dr. Quiet & peaceful location. Never heard any of the other visitors at night. Actually heard sea lions barking in the distance both mornings. 2 beds, 1 bath, kitchen, jacuzzi, porch, TV, and DVD player are all in the cottage we stayed in. Love the ample space to move around after being cramped in a van for a long period. No offensive odors in any way. Water stayed hot. Beds were comfortable. Staff was friendly AND helpful. Options for food are in Trinidad and Orick. Great option to choose when we come back. read more

Absolutely adorable little cottage in the woods! Very calm and peaceful and quiet, but so close to the coast you can hear the seals on the beach! We visited on our honeymoon trip up the PCH and absolutely fell in love with this place. Service was fantastic. Rooms were adorable and very clean and comfortable. Hot tub was pristine--absolutely no concerns (from someone a bit narcotic). Breakfast was continental but still had solid options. They even offered GF oatmeal, for those like me who can't do toast! I am so happy to recommend View Crest Lodge & their staff. We took a road trip right after Thanksgiving from so cal, with no set plans. Called View Crest as we got closer to the Red wood national park. They were so friendly & were available! We were lucky enough to get a bigger cabin, two bedrooms, full kitchen, 2 bathrooms & a comfortable living room with modern tv, which was great for our dinner & movie nights. The beds , bathrooms, towels, everything was clean! Even though we went during this covid time, they still managed to include breakfast with our stay, unlike a few other places we had stopped at a long the way. We were lucky to stay 3 nights & enjoyed our stay while we explored the National park, which is a short drive away. We will definitely be back during the summer! read more

I wanted to find a motel in Eureka, but confusing highway signage made me miss Eureka. Eureka has to be here somewhere, I insisted. I kept going up the highway until I came to Trinidad. That's right, I couldn't FIND Eureka! I decided to stop in Trinidad. I had to get off the highway immediately before I blew by Trinidad too. I half expected the next sign to be Welcome to Oregon. What! I missed California? I picked this place out of the Auto Club book. I found it after driving a considerable distance on a curvy two-lane strip perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific. The road made me nervous. In a couple of places it slants to such a degree it seems possible you could slide off into the ocean. Only later did I learn that I could have driven right to the place practically by staying on 101. I see why gadget mavens are so smug about their GPS. Speaking of gadgets, View Crest has wi-fi. I really like this place. It's a lot better than the standard motel I had in mind when I was looking for Eureka. I hope I get the chance to go again. David the manager acts like he's the owner. It's a good thing when a staff person takes major responsibility. He took over a few months ago. He does well as the affable host. He says he has regulars who vacation here year after year. It's a complex of cute cabins set in a woodsy piece of acreage. It's across the two-lane from the cliff, however, so there's only a fractional ocean view. It's a nice view nonetheless. You can hear the waves lapping against the shore. You hear the barking of sea lions in the morning. (The name View Crest may create exaggerated expectations. The tour book reference to "vistas of the Pacific" might spark visions of watching waves crash to shore from cabin windows. It's the only conceivable knock against this place. If you want a full ocean view, expect to pay a lot more than the $145 rate for our cabin.) The cabin we occupied has a back porch where you can clean your fish. I think they all come with back porches. You park right next to the cabin. It has a front porch where you could lounge with your morning coffee. Our cabin was roomy and comfortable. It has a full kitchen with stove & refrigerator so you can stock up on groceries down the road at the friendly country store. No need to bring dishes and utensils. They have 'em. Trinidad is a charming place. I highly recommend it. Date of visit: May '08. read more

I hate giving this place a 2...torn between 2 & 3.... but there were some problems that shouldn't exist in a room that costs $100 a night. First of all, I love this part of the coast, and I actually lived less than a half-mile from this place when I was a young-un. This was where the closest phone booth was located back in the day...before cell phones and while I was still too young to be able to afford a land line. I think the cabin we stayed in (which was the front one) used to be the little store where we could get change for the phone and buy popsicles. Anyhow, I WANTED to love it here. But this is an older place, and probably doesn't get a lot of visiting in the winter....and the room smelled very, very moldy. I was hoping that using the heater would help. Then when we went down to Arcata, I purchased incense at Wildberries and burned a couple of sticks. But the smell was pretty obvious underneath the incense smell. When we got there, the key didn't work in the deadbolt because it was rusted and wouldn't turn. Fortunately, the door was unlocked, but I knew we might be in trouble when the door was so swollen from moisture that it wouldn't open or shut without yanking and slamming. Just one of those red flags, y'know? The unit had it's own covered porch which was really nice to hang out in and watch the wind in the trees and listen to the rain this morning while drinking coffee. I understand a couple of the more expensive cabins have hot tubs or jacuzzis in-room, and that might have been nice, but we weren't there long enough to justify the extra expense. [We were in town to hear jazz at the college.] I took the wall side of the bed, and that was the worst area for the smell. The management probably needs to move the furniture away from the south wall and get a high-powered heat unit in there for a while to dry things out. And that probably won't work over the long run. It's just an old place, and it's right on the coast, and it's WET out there all the time. Sigh. I think I'd've rather just had a popsicle and hadn't bothered with the stay. Warning for winter patrons -- check your room before committing. If it smells bad, ask for a different room or move on. PS The staff is a young family, and they are very nice. There's also a camping area up in the back that we didn't really look at, but might be pretty nice, and likely a LOT cheaper than Patrick's Point State Park, which is $40 a night. Large deck area and it looks like some of the cottages may even have ocean views. Also had large jetted tub and seperate shower. Was immaculately clean and felt homey. Wife and I really loved this place. We stayed here two nights, mainly to hike Fern Canyon which is a short 10-15 mile drive from this hotel. The rooms are great, and we lucked out and got a cottage (#2) that shares no wall with anyone, which is great because we have two toddlers and didn't want to disturb anyone. Our family stayed for 4 nights. Lovely lodge, nice service; good location. Having a toddler and an infant was fairly easy, it's a kid friendly and family friendly lodge. We used highway 101 to drive to the restaurants and market, rather than the back road. A much smoother ride. Patrick's point state beach was a run day trip. A quick 2 minute drive! Amazing place to stay! Great staff, great continental breakfast, great cabin, and great location. Very relaxing place to stay. Our hot tub cabin had a fully furnished kitchen, patio/deck, bbq, wifi, cable tv, etc. Close to gorgeous state parks and friendly town of Trinidad. Comfortable, clean, and very reasonably priced for all it has to offer. The hot tub is in a private room attached to the cabin and is extremely nice compared to other 'spa cabins' we've stayed at. The property was booked, so we ended up in a different cottage each night, but the owners moved all our luggage for us while we were out hiking. We stayed in a very cute cottage with a full kitchen. It was clean, comfortable, quiet, reasonably priced, and located within the Redwoods area, as well as, being conveniently close to Trinadad and other small towns. read more

This was such a lovely place to stay! We found it when planning our honeymoon on the west coast - it was by far the nicest lodging in the area (based on outward appearance) and based on what we experienced. The cottage we stayed in had two rooms, each with it's own TV. The main office even had movies you could check out! Additionally, they had a decent sized fridge, sink, dishes, silverware, microwave, as well as two separate room heaters. The bathroom was simply wonderful - everything looked new and was extremely clean. We were provided plenty of towels and wash cloths along with soaps and travel sized shampoos. The bed was somewhat comfortable. The woman in the office (JoAnn) gave us great dining and hiking recommendations and she was very personable and informative. She led on that we could expect to be woken not by roosters, but sea lions in the morning. She wasn't kidding! We're from the east coast, so we got quite a kick out of that little nuance. We really enjoyed our stay here and look forward to coming back! read more

My wife and I have now stayed twice at View Crest Lodge in Trinidad, CA. First time to attend a wedding in nearby Eureka and we loved it so much we returned for a mini vacation. Here's my Pros; IT'S SECLUDED, located off the main highway but yet close enough to hop on the highway to travel to many of the beautiful locations that are close by, the Redwood Forest, the Beach and Patricks Point State Park great for hiking, exploring and seeing the beautiful forest and coast line. IT'S QUIET but you can still hear the sounds of nature, birds chirping and the seals barking at the nearby beach across the rarely used road. IT'S CLEAN and nicely and comfortably furnished, comes with large LCD TV's with cable. IT'S REASONABLY PRICED with many options when it comes to your choice of rooms, there's even hot tubs in some rooms and jetted tubs. For the more adventurous there's even a campground and an RV Park with hookups. Has everything you need, large living room, large bedroom, large bathroom and a full kitchen loaded with all necessary items needed to make your stay feel as if you were at home except here you get maid service . Here's my cons; I HAD TO LEAVE AND COME BACK HOME AND INTO THE CITY, BUT I PLAN ON RETURNING. I highly recommend View Crest Lodge for a nice peaceful kick back vacation with many beautiful areas and sights to see.
