I've been seeing Suzanne for almost 5 years! The first time I went to her was for a haircut, and with my difficult (thick and wavy/curly) hair I didn't know what to expect. But she did a great job. Before that I had gone way too long without a cut because of the apathy I had for my appearance at the time, but because of skills like hers it really proved what a good haircut can do for a person. The next time I went to her was for a cut... and a color correction, because I dyed my hair at home (lightened it, actually) and despite going only maybe a shade lighter, the roots were quite brassy. She fixed it, no problem, explained the science of box dyes and why they should be avoided most of the time, and after the cut dried and straightened my hair to make sure I was satisfied and thought the color was even. After that, I kept going back.
When i decided to try a new color process, I brought in some pictures for ideas. Suzanne explained that the level of blonde the women in the pictures had would require some maintenance, and therefore cost more. So she suggested I try highlights which would lighten my hair up, but be more cost efficient and look good as my hair grows. I went with that, and after the first time it looked a bit odd because, well, it was the first time. But I quickly saw how after the second time the highlights were more blended and I loved it. I did the highlights for probably a good 3 years, but decided on something a little different this past fall.
I decided to get allover color in a darker shade than the highlights, but still lighter than my natural dark blonde. Something that would still be budget-friendly, low maintenance, and not look stupid when my roots start to show. The first time I was unsure about it because the ashy toner sunk into the highlighted parts of my hair more than the untreated parts, creating a greyish look. I didn't say anything about it to her that time because I was a bit nervous to (despite going to her for four years, because I'm a dork) but the excess toner soon washed out and I liked the color much better. Though at this point I still wasn't 100% happy, as my roots and the highlighted portions of my hair still weren't meshing as well as I had hoped. At my next appointment, I explained to Suzanne exactly what I wasn't liking about my hair, and she quickly new the solution. She also explained that because I had highlights, the allover color might take a few times to really grab on, as bleached hair is more porous than untreated hair. I kinda knew this, but it's still nice that she explained why more in detail so I would have realistic expectations -- something that seems to allude me. After that appointment, which was the second time we did the allover color, the color is definitely more like what I was hoping for, and since she adjusted the color last time my roots look closer to both the color and tone of the highlighted portions of my hair. I should know better by now that she knows what she's doing, but I am very confident that after my next appointment (which I just booked) the color will look even better, and that just shows that being totally honest with your stylist is how you get the results you really want, so don't be shy! It's also a good sign when a stylist is honest with you, too, so you know what to expect and what will work best for your hair so you can look and feel your best. It's also just really cool to build a relationship with your stylist.
I've recommended The Establishment to a friend, who was very happy with her cut, and would recommend it to anyone who is willing to spend more than what they charge at those chain salons for a really good haircut with style. Their site has a full menu, so you can see upfront what each stylist charges and what they're experienced at, and you can book online in real time. Although, if it's your first time you can always call and speak directly to their always helpful receptionist and find the right stylist for you. read more
