Living in Shorewood, I walk by The Establishment often and always feel it gives off this trendy, casual, cool vibe. I recently decided to check out their services, and booked a highlight and cut with Kenzie It was almost a packed house (all chairs full) when I was getting my hair done. Kenzie is a sweetie and fantastic! I usually give pretty vague descriptions, show a photo or two. I'm not one to get overly upset about results (as long as I walk out with hair below my shoulders, I'm good lol), and prefer to have the artist work their magic. She definitely has the magic!! The highlights are amazing and perfectly placed. The cut is awesome - I love that she still did long layers but in a way that I can still put my hair up or braid it and there are not pieces sticking out every-which-way. I will definitely book again with her and highly recommend :) read more

I found The Establishment after searching for a Green Circle salon in the area (if you're not familiar but care about sustainability, it is worth a google search- they go above and beyond to decrease the environmental impact of hair services) and reached out to set up a somewhat last-minute appointment (especially considering a holiday rush) for some color and a cut. I saw Kenzie and showed her a couple inspo pics and explained a couple hair issues I have, and she got to work. She was friendly, and we had a few nice conversations, but also some non-awkward silence, which was relaxing. I didn't feel pressure to make small talk. Even though I arrived a couple minutes late, she was able to complete some foils, a toner, a cut, and a blow dry with time to spare before I had to leave to cross town to teach a yoga class, which was also greatly appreciated! I absolutely love the results - it was just what I was looking for. I'd had an emotionally draining appointment just before going in, so it was a relief in so many ways to be so pleased with the outcome and leave with more confidence and pep in my step. I left the place some color and hair cut were completely different. I was very unsatisfie. she was 23 years old young girl. if you charge over 40$ for a haircut , you really need better stylist. i left 20 percent tip. however I think it was a waste and i need a new haircut. dont waste your money and time in this saloon read more

They cancelled on me on the day of my scheduled appointment, despite having made and confirmed the appointment 3 days ago. The reason they gave me was "X is not taking any new clients at this time". Truly the BEST haircut I've gotten in 10 years in this city. I've been to lots of different salons looking for a stylist who excels in CUTTING skills and I have finally found Steph! I have naturally wavy hair with a deep chocolate color (I know, #blessed). So what I look for in a stylist is someone who is interested in and working on their cutting skills. I know hair color is the big thing, and I understand they make more money on that so I get it! But it annoys me when someone tries to convince me my own natural hair is anything other than fabulous to sell more. Steph did not do that! She is a highly skilled professional who does great color (I've seen her work) but also cares about the cut! She worked perfectly with the natural texture of my hair so every lock falls perfectly into place with minimal styling. I'm in awe! I'm new to the area and needed a good haircut so I booked an appointment at The Establishment online and was looking forward to it. The next day I went to work and did not look at my personal email until later that night, only to find out that my appointment had been canceled with no explanation. I did find another earlier email also from that morning to confirm the appointment. But I had booked it and left my credit card number I never saw the confirmation email until after I saw the cancellation one. This seems to me like a terrible way to treat a new client potentially one who could give them a lot of business. I'm a firm believer in Aveda salons not just because of the products but because of the way that they treat their customers. I did call and left a detailed message with my number and the information telling them that I was surprised to get these emails and that I had never made a cancellation and had been looking forward to the appointment. But no one bothered to call me back either to explain what happened or to help me rebook. I have such a bad taste in my mouth after this and I am never going to try them again.​ read more

Literally cannot say enough about the talents of every single stylist who works here. Pretty sure I have been to them all. Special shoutouts to Jess and Ali for cut and color. Ali is also an insanely talented aesthetician and I have revived many a wax from her. I won't go to any other salon in Milwaukee. Not only is the quality amazing but The establishment vibe is stellar. It's so diverse the ages and customers there are not just a bunch of north shore Nancy's but people of all ages who love aveda and top notch self care. Unfortunately I had a pretty bad experience here. Kenzie barely listened to what I was explaining, was silent and sullen the entire haircut, far too rough in washing and handling my hair, used extremely high heat, and gave me a haircut and hairstyle that was not what I asked for. Yep, definitely a regular now, with Justine. She always seems to be in sync with what I'm looking for. While I'm very particular about my bangs, the rest of it I'm kind of wishy washy about, and she always executes everything brilliantly. I've referred three people now to Justine, all of whom rave about her to me and intend to stick with her. This place is so great I actually debated not writing a review so I could keep it to myself :P I have now seen Kara twice and she is AMAZING. I have Type 2a (wavy) hair. I also have a TON of it. I have visited countless salons and stylists throughout my life, usually leaving disappointed with my hair. On ability and skill alone she KILLS IT!! Her attention to detail is the stuff you write home about and I will never see another stylist again as long as we both are located in the area. She is very genuine in her interactions, I never feel like she is being 'fake' with me. She is so nice and never makes me feel stupid about the damage I had done to my hair in the past. Back in the winter I got a balyage and cut and I had never been so in love with my hair. Even though this was my first time going to Kara she seemed like she was already in tune with what my hair could handle (dark - turns orange with lifting). She explained and walked me through all the technical reasons behind everything she was doing which I LOVE because I am the type of person who enjoys knowing how things work. read more

The Establishment is top of the line when it comes to salons in the Milwaukee area. Steph is the master of balayage and I won't trust my hair with anyone else, but I'm positive all of the stylists are incredible- if you want proof, just check out their Instagram. Full of great pictures of their colors and cuts! I always check there for inspiration before my next appointment. Very professional and very clean and bright space. The whole experience from start to finish is top notch. Word to the wise though- I'd recommend booking at least a month in advance. They book up fast! read more

I had a really great haircut here, using a groupon. although the staff was very unprofessional. I came in not knowing what I wanted, and she did a great job of convincing me to cut off 12 inches of hair and go back to my pixie/bob styled days. However, I was a bit shocked (since it wasn't REALLY what I had planned) and she was a bit insulting towards me when I asked a few questions about styling and commented that she disagreed when I pointed out a section that looked boyish. The thing that really irked me, though, was the fact that the other staff were in there with no customers and just insulting staff that were out that day. They were being catty and rude, and talking about things that were wayyy to personal. They also talked about customers as they left. I realize I was the only customer in there towards the end and that I was there for a long time because of the amount of hair that I was getting cut off, but I just don't think I can go back! For hair, I'll travel far and wide to find a good stylist and I must say, I've found "THE ONE." It's been a long time since I've actually gotten what I want from a hairstylist. Using a groupon coupon, I made an appointment with Molly. Now I'm always wary of trying out new stylists because I am very specific in what I want. Molly took away my fear of having my hair butchered. She's excellent because she listens and gives an honest opinion. She wasn't pushy about selling me products. I really admire her courteousness and professionalism. I love my haircut even though to the rest of those who know me, it's my 'old' hairstyle. I am so glad I am back to normal! I came here for a cut n' color because my usual stylist was out of town. I had read on Yelp about the "wonders of Justine"....So I decided to take a chance and "cheat" on my long-term stylist with this new and mysterious Justine girl.... Well, the reviews were true. Justine is, in fact, the beautiful and amazing girl that is described on Yelp. haha. She is an absolute doll---but more importantly, a qualified and talented stylist. She does indeed intuitively know what the client wants/needs--with little explanation involved. I am super happy with my cut, new rockin' bangs, and awesome color. Justine is a master of her craft. The Establishment itself is my kind of place...small, unique, stylish...and with solid customer service (that's so important!). I LOVE walking into a place and feeling welcome. Why shouldn't I---I'm going to be spending my hard-earned cash there, right?? :-) In Summary, great experience, great outcome----so happy with my hair. A++! I am so happy with my new cut. I read a review talking about Justine's ability to cut Asian hair. I have Asian-esque hair and she did a fab job! With three aunts that cut hair, this is the first person to give an opinion about what I should do with my hair. She did exactly what I wanted and added some short bangs that topped it off. The atmosphere is perfect for me. You walk in and are greeted by a friendly person, regardless of what they do there. Sometimes, at other places, it seemed as though you had to have an "in" to fit in. Not here, all are welcome. I was able to get an appointment on a Saturday morning when I called on a Friday night. A little more than a week ago, I had an appointment with Ali and WOW! She is the best hair stylist I have ever had. I was sick of my very long and burnt work-from-home hair and went for a full blown chop-off of around 11 inches. I had seen her work on the salon instagram page and decided to make the trip from Caledonia to get a cut from her as well as because the salon really made it clear that they took COVID seriously. Ali was amazing and is such a nice hype person! She listened to me, took her time, and kept me reassured the whole time. I've been to hair salons here in Milwaukee, NYC, LA, and Madrid but she stood out from all of them. I have struggled for *years* to find a salon that has both great customer service and does a good job on my long, thick hair. I was recommended by a friend and I am SO glad I took her advice. When I came in, I was given a cup of tea (Rishi, even. They had my heart right there.) and enjoyed their great musical taste while I waited for my appointment time. I've passed through this place many times when I ride the 15 and was originally leery of this place. First of all, I usually get my haircut in Chicago - I don't feel comfortable going to many American hairdressers since most of them cut my hair really bluntly on the ends (which irritates me to no end) and also because the place was really expensive compared to what I'm used to. I ended up going there on a less than busy Friday evening for a trim and was greeted by Justine, one of the stylists. I was really surprised when she gave me a neck rub before cutting my hair. Also, she washed my hair and when I specified how I hated blunt ends on my hair, she followed through with this and I ended up having the more natural looking ends I usually get from most Asian hairdressers - I was impressed. Not only that, I found Justine to be super-friendly and very professional. The other added perks to this place is that you don't get itchy from having hair falling down your shirt. Oh, and the place smells pretty nice and is really clean. Overall, do I recommend it? So far, yes. Though I've yet to try getting one of those awesome trendy Japanese haircuts I see on Raysysa (http://www.rasysa.com/pkg/style/) from The Establishment, I'll definitely be going there again for at least a trim. read more

I absolutely love Justine and the great things she did to my thick, coarse, Asian hair. She was great with scissors and just *knew* what I needed. I've been going here for a few years now with Justine as my main stylist, but unfortunately she left for LA. So I went in for a trim by a different stylist. I wish I would have left when Justine left. I paid $48 for a mediocre cut. I just wanted my hair cleaned up, subtle bottom layers... but I received a haircut that made me want to cry. There was a gap of 7 inches from the shortest layer to the bottom (yes, I measured it) and layers were not blended well. On the right side, it literally looked like someone took a big bite out of my hair. Also bangs weren't done at all like I had showed in the picture. I decided not to go back to get it fixed because I don't want to risk it and don't think she can give me back my 7 inches of hair. I mean.. it wasn't a horrible cut.... but for $48 and #1 salon on Yelp, I expected better. So I decided to go to a stylist who knew Asian hair and had it fixed instead. Btw I'm not sure why the "Hair Types Specialized In" says Asian hair, but it's absolutely not true at all. Just look at my pics. :( read more

I have been a customer at the establishment for several years and was a little terrified that my stylist will be moving to California to open their new location. I was recommended to see one of the new staff members, Jackie. I had my first visit with Jackie a week ago and will definitely be back to see her. Jackie gave a great consultation, did not push me to cut my long hair more than I wanted to - a big plus, and encouraged me to go a bit lighter on my highlights for summer. The highlights she did are fantastic. With my hair being so fine I have had some bad color in the past at other salons and was afraid to have someone new do my hair. Jackie exceeded my expectations. So many people have asked where I had my hair done and say they love the highlights. Knowing her skills, I may get a bit more adventurous next time i see her. Also got a feather extension, which is staying in much better than the ones I got at another salon a few weeks before. Love my hair, highly recommend Jackie. read more

Justine is, in fact, as amazing as everyone says. I'd been trying to find a stylist in Milwaukee for years, and all the other ones I'd been to ranged from "Meh" to "Good Lord, never again." Enter Justine. She's completely adorable and a skilled stylist to boot. She's always made me feel comfortable (good conversation skills are as important as the ability to cut hair, in my opinion). She's the first person to give me bangs that don't look like I cut them myself - they look fabulous (a compliment to her, not me), and I've had several people stop me randomly to ask where I get my hair done since getting them. And that girl has a crazy memory. On just my second visit to her, I sat down in her chair and she asked, "So how's school going? English, right?" Umm...yes. Considering how many clients she must have, her ability to remember a conversation with me from 3 months prior was impressive. I'll even be cheesy and say it...she made me feel special (awww, right?). She doesn't judge me for dying my own hair because I'm cheap...what else? Oh, just go to her. P.S. The salon itself is cute, too. And it's right across from Alterra, so you can make a day of it and treat yourself to a scone and latte after your appointment to show off your new 'do. read more

I absolutely LOVE The Establishment!!! I've been going here for almost 2 years now and look forward to every trip. I drive in from Racine and it is about 40 minutes each way, but well worth it! Suzanne is AMAZING with color! She somehow understands what I want even when I can't put it into words. I have gone to a variety of salons over the years and had a number of stylists (even worked in a salon for a while) and I have never been as happy with my hair. Not only is Suzanne awesome with color, but Annie rocks a wax! No matter what she is waxing, you feel comfortable. I'd never get a Brazilian from anyone else! I just plan LOVE The Establishment, and so does my teenage daughter. It is nice and cozy and makes you feel like one of the family. I feel so relaxed and special whenever I go. One last thing that I truly appreciate is that the salon consistently does classes for their stylists..allowing them to keep up with the latest trends and fine tune their skills. I do my research... it's not always spot on, but it is much better then doing No research at all. After reading the reviews, it appeared that Justine had some of the best feedback, especially how she can intuitively know what you are looking for... So I picked her. Justine was able to visualize what I wanted to create. I showed her a few pics and explained some of my hair issues. I think Justine listened attentively. She's younger, and I don't think I would consider her a "master " stylist, However, give her a few years, and I see massive potential. You will want to fall in love with this girl the minute you see her. Justine welcomes you in to her world with love and positive energy. She's a doll basically. She kept telling me what a "super cutie" I was, which gave me a boost of confidence. And she's also a vegetarian (I have a special place in my heart for all of the other veggies out there). I was very happy with my haircut. It was the first time I had gone there. My bangs were cut a little bit too short on one side, but we were both trying to collaborate on getting a particular look that didn't actualize itself completely. I'm not an "easily pleased" person ... I seek out perfection. if you generally spend around $40 per haircut, Justine will get you your money's worth. I'd like to try her again but I'm happy with my current stylist. I think Justine is growing as an artist exponentially... It was my first time at Establishment yesterday. Ok, so the stylist wasn't the warmest or most talkative. But I liked the way she danced to the music, we exchanged a few pleasantries, and most importantly, my hair looks AMAZING. I-can't-stop-looking-in-the-mirror amazing. And I don't even think I gave her that much direction. She just *knew* what my hair needed. Best haircut I've gotten in a long, long time. I do not like trying new salons. I've had bad and mediocre experiences, which is undesirable when dealing with one's hair. I read the reviews for The Establishment and decided to go for it. I am so excited to get my next haircut there! Shannon is amazing. She's so adorable, like a little doll, and so smiley. I am terrible at explaining what I want done, but she perfectly understood my weirdly vague description. She started with a scalp massage and I almost asked her to marry me. Shannon is fun to chat with, putting me at ease while she worked her magic. When she finished, I loved my cut and left the salon feeling very fancy. Came here with a bridal party (I was one of the bridesmaids), so while I don't know what the cost is per hair style since I wasn't the one footing the bill, I can say they did a really great job with our hair. Our bride wasn't super picky, but wanted us each to have a side braid and a flower in our hair. Rebecca was great about making the style work in my hair, not adhering strictly to the photo (as was encouraged) and figuring out what would work the most natural for a style that isn't generally my style. It came out really great, and I felt pretty fantastic day-of. Also, props to Annie for doing a great quick eye-shadow job! I'm not generally a makeup wearer and mine were fabulous in two shakes of a jiff. I always have excellent service. I love what Justine does to my hair! I can come in wanting something new that fits my hair and styling preferences and she can make awesome suggestions. I love my haircuts from her. I have also had Suzanne cut my hair and she also does excellent work. I had my make-up done by Meghan for my engagement photos. My photos turned out with a very fresh and natural look to my face. Both Justine and Meghan will be doing hair and make-up for both myself and my bridesmaids for my upcoming wedding. I can't wait! I just moved to Milwaukee and was worried about walking blindly into a new salon. Thanks to YELP, I picked The Establishment over a few other random places and am SO glad I did! This place does great work yet is unpretentious, is extremely professional yet really comfortable and friendly. I love it! I saw Annie, who helped me prep for a job interview with a drastic cut that I LOVE. I described what I wanted with "Professional and clean looking but still funky and creative. Also low maintenance, light, and really short but not so I look like my mom." She translated that brilliantly - I've gotten countless compliments since! Went there Thursday 7:00 pm - My first time there , I'm a dude! location - it was a nice location, lot of restaurants, pubs and other salons. so far so good. Decor is semi industrial, I really liked the hardwood floor. I forget the entrance or if there was a sign to the place maybe cause it was dark. Stations are neat and clean, with full length mirrors and comfortable chairs. Receptionist greeting was pleasant , i was offered a drink, i asked for water but none was brought. (ditzy girl!) then the stylist came around greeted me politely. She presented herself well. Small consultation on the style. I presented a photo. Wash, minty and refreshing. She began the cut.. Nice small talk. Her hands were confident with the scissors, but reserved with the electric razor. the cut turned out good, sides were even top was left long. (modified pompadour) got a rinse, and a hot towel on my face, sat back down at her station. We just couldn't get the styling down, i think my hair was still too wet. But this morning the style turned out awesome! read more
