My builder constructed the wall framing, added an electrical run, and redirected the existing gas line. I live near the showroom so Aaron didn't mind stopping by to perform the pre-installation inspection. I was super fortunate to be able to snag an open installation appointment just one week later. 2 guys on the EmberWest install team came by and reworked my existing flue, chimney topper, and of course installed the new fireplace. I'm currently waiting for my builder to close up the wall and install the mantel, wall ledger tiles, and hearth. Once this is complete I will be calling Aaron to schedule our final log setup and testing. I realize this review is being written before my project is done but everything has gone perfectly so far and I expect the final setup will be more of the same - perfection!

Even though they kindly let me know they weren't taking new clients this year, Aaron still took the time to ask for our fireplace model number and photos. To my surprise, he actually called and walked us through a few standard troubleshooting steps over the phone! We could see the igniter wire glow red-orange but turn off after a few seconds. He explained that was a good sign -- then suggested we leave it on, and toggle the wall switch as needed to help the system reset. After a few tries, the pilot light finally came on, and then the fireplace kicked in! Aaron explained that when a fireplace hasn't been used in a while, the gas line can fill with air -- you just have to let it run a bit to clear it out. I really appreciate Aaron's kindness, patience, and expertise -- especially even though we weren't official clients.! Thanks to his guidance, our fireplace is working again, and we'll be staying warm all winter. Highly recommend!

Like many customers I wanted to put a TV over a fireplace without it being too high off the ground as this makes for an unpleasant viewing experience. One way to do this is to use the "cool wall" type of installation, which lets you locate a TV right above the fireplace, but this requires building a chase into the room - and the particular room we have is too small for this to be a good idea. I also did not want to use one of the mantle mount options for our TV because that would also bring the TV into the room when lowering it for use which would thereby also reduce the size of the room in front of the TV. So we had a bit of a conundrum. But penguin showed us some options, which allowed us to get our TV low enough without using a mantel mount or a chase at all. Specifically, they showed us an insert that you could put directly on a concrete floor and a noncombustible mantle which you could locate just a few inches over the fireplace opening without risking fire safety. (As a point of comparison, locating a typical combustible mantle above a fireplace requires strictly specified minimum distance, which in effect leads to a much much higher minimum TV installation height..) We also went with a custom surround, which makes the gas insert that we went with look a lot bigger, and also a good proportion for the space that we have... And the design of the insert itself makes it look a whole lot deeper and wider than it actually is by using reflective glass. I'm really pleased with how this turned out. For the wall tile, I'd always had a dream of doing board form concrete and penguin did a fantastic job installing it. This is a fiberglass reinforced concrete veneer product I got from Wall Theory in the color "natural gray." It's worth mentioning that I visited another store that did not think of the options we went with, which left me scratching my head as I stared at a pile of catalogs that they shared instead. Go with Penguin.

I have been waiting to write this review, so I could give Cal Window some big props on handling two separate disputes with the Velux factory for a new product they introduced this year - custom-size blinds. While Velux is arguably the best skylight manufacturer out there, they also appeared to have some operational issues launching their new custom-blinds product and twice shipped two incorrect orders, first with a skylight, then with blinds. I do want to applaud Sean for how he handled things in a winsome way. Velux didn't want to own the first mistake, but Sean was persistent and was able to drive it to resolution...and then same on the second mistake the Velux factory made. All three skylights are now installed with the correct custom-size automated blinds and they work great...and the skylights are great! Thank you Sean, Gloria, Alex, Nancy, and Patrick for the constant communication letting me know where things stood. I am looking forward to working with you all again!

They are a terrific design and build company, and we are very happy with the work they did. We hired them in 2020 to complete our kitchen and family room remodel, and were very pleased with their whole process and especially the skilled people they have working for them. We decided to do the rest of our home, and were thrilled they were able to help us again. We expanded closets, moved a wall, took out an old chimney, redid the floors and lighting, put in 5 new windows, and had the interior and exterior repainted. From design to build, they were very professional and easy to work with. It feels like having a construction company in the family. They were respectful and knowledgeable, and every time something unexpected came up, they gave us good advice about what we needed to do and what was optional. Our designer Lisa was very patient with us, as we worked out all the details before construction began. Jason was great as our project manager, giving us good advice when we ran across termite damage and always making sure things were done to our satisfaction. And our electrician, Robin, was amazing - so knowledgeable and made it her goal every day she worked that we were happy with the lighting and fans she installed. Gave us such confidence that the work was done right and will last for many years! I highly recommend Gridley if you want things done right, with no worries. Starting the…read moreproject with an at-home visit, he throughly decoded the best way to disassemble the original mantel and then construct a brand-spanking new one. Our fireplace is a corner unit, which proved this project to be a special (if not difficult) one. A few of the items on our wish list was to have a: * thicker, more contemporary mantel - one that will have lasting style but still match the existing stone that surrounds it. * deeper space that can actually be used to hold typical mantel items. The original mantel was less than 8" deep, which looked out of place with the tall ceiling and could barely hold a photo frame. However, extending the mantel further out would need to be carefully planned so that it was both sturdy and safe. * color that matches spots within the stone, along with the existing wood in the room. After all the deciphering and measuring was complete, Mark returned with the mantel complete and installed it same day. To complete the project, we also removed the old chain cover, gutted, painted and replaced the gas log-kit itself. A photo is attached that shows our process and progress. The outcome is exactly what we sought, with many thanks to A Mantel Shoppe.
