Favorite is the Rib Eye steak. Best in Long Beach in my opinion. Eldo never lets me down.

The Eldo has earned the reputation to be a dependable neighborhood spot for Long Beach locals. I base this on the feedback I get from friends and neighbors who live in our area. This menu has such a nice variety depending on what you're in the mood for. Our party of 18 was seated outside. Such a lovely ambience with the patio layout from the lighting, to the spaciousness, to coziness of the heaters. My husband and I tried the zucchini appetizer for the first time. It was piping hot, which I love. Fryer to table is the best! The batter was crispy and the zucchini was cooked perfectly. I must let you know though, after we devoured it, we noticed about a teaspoon of grease at the bottom of the basket. So know that it is a greasy appetizer if that matters to you. The beef dip was such a nice portion size. I would order again! I liked the cut of the top sirloin slices, and the au jus complemented it well. I'm glad it was recommended I order it with the side of fresh horseradish because it was an added flavorful, bonus. The fries that accompanied it had that perfect crunch, a plentiful amount and so delectable I had to tell myself to stop! This plate was such a generous serving size that I could only eat half of it and got to enjoy a wonderful leftover lunch the next day. Now that's a bargain to me ! My husband ordered the Philly Cheesesteak and did not leave a crumb on his plate. Someone ordered a milkshake and I thought, "dang for $6 that's a big one." I got to sample a taste of the Malva Butter Cake which was exactly as described " warm and gooey." It was richly flavored and not sickening sweet. I must add that the vanilla ice cream was not as enjoyable as I had expected. If it had real vanilla bean added to the ice cream recipe, The Eldo could have a memorable signature dessert that would be the talk of The Plaza. Let's see if they tweak it. I wish I could remember the name of the young lady who served our party. She was so lovely, attentive and professional that I could see her heading to work at a high restaurant someday. The food portions were very generous. The pretzel appetizer was a great size to share. It was served warm and soft. The full order of fish and chips were enough for two meals, the peas were in a garlic sauce, very tasty versus the normal plain peas. The Ribeye was delicious, cooked just right at Medium rare. I go to a local meetup down the street from here and afterwards we like to come here. They won't let you in if you have 6 or more people. "We don't have room" they say as I look over her shoulder and see 30+ empty spots. This has happened multiple times. I really hate to say this but this establishment isn't a place to have a meal. The food here is not good quality nor is it fresh. In my opinion, the Eldo is meant for the full bar, the large tvs to watch sports and possibly to have some made-from-frozen bar food/appetizers or grab a scoop of Thriftys ice cream. We walked over to the Eldo to check out the menu and the vibe. We didn't have a reservation, but apparently it's highly suggested because this place gets really busy! We waited for about 15 minutes on a Saturday around 530pm and sat on the patio with our dog. The vibe was confusing - it was a loud bar inside, and families gathered all around on the patio. Our server was absolutely wonderful, she was super attentive, friendly and made a lot of suggestions. We went for the more unique items on the menu - the wings with the peri-peri seasoning, and two different handmade pies: one chicken and one steak n' stout. The wings were pretty basic, the seasoning was good but it definitely lack lustered and nothing to truly rave about. Next came the pot pies, each pie was a good size and came with a mound of mashed potatoes and gravy, and overcooked peas. I had the steak n' stout pie and the inside was still warm, but not piping hot like I was expecting, the mashed potatoes were very heavy on the sour cream and the dark brown gravy was decent. My husband had the chicken pot pie and the inside of his was half warm, half cold. His mashed potatoes came with a lighter gravy which didn't really taste like anything. We passed on dessert and paid the bill. Again, this star rating is based solely on the food quality and not the service. The service was most excellent. I really hope the owners pay attention to reviews because the staff are A++++ . My third time going and even though my walk in wait time was longer then my wait time making a reservation (which I did, and got seated quicker.. hint hint) .. fyi I walked in and was an hour wait, went on their website made a reservation and waited 30 mins .. Regardless..whatever the wait is .. the staff and food is worth it. A little pricey but with every penny! I refuse to try anything else because the filet is so damn good but my family has had the meatloaf, ribeye, wings, salads and no complaints. Plus they are super dog friendly. Brought a filet home to my daughter, packing was good kept the gravy off the mashed potatoes and she loved it. This place is so hit and miss. It's literally down the street, so I keep giving it chances, but when it fails, it fails hard. Let me start by saying the servers and bartenders are wonderful. The food is also usually good. I did get some sliders that were seriously undercooked, but I learned to ask for them well done and that worked. The problem is that the bar is usually packed beyond belief. Every now and then it's not, but usually it is. So if you try to go the actual restaurant, you get the runaround. Today, that happened. The bar was full so we asked the hostesses for a table. The dining room was empty except for one table and the patio area was the same - one table taken. They told us it was a 15 to 20 minute wait. WHAT? I'm sorry, what is wrong with the way restaurants are run now? Do they just not know how to schedule wait staff, or what's the deal? We walked. Maybe what my wife and I ordered wasn't diverse enough to give a honest evaluation of the food but what we had was just ok. I had the full order of fish and chips and my wife had chicken strips and fries. We've certainly had better other places. The "full order" was 2 pieces of fish. I think the half order is also 2 pieces but smaller. The others at our table had other menu items but no one really raved about the food. Overall impression was just meh. One really annoying thing is that they have no paper menus, just a QR code to access the menu on your own device. Normally this would be fine but the restaurant is in a dead zone for cell service and their Wifi doesn't work. None of us, all using different types of phones and different carriers, could get past the terms/conditions screen. They were able to provide 1 tablet for 6 people to use that had a menu on it. What a wonderful transformation! Who knew the space was so large? The addition of the back patio allows for social distancing as well as the inside. The cocktails are delicious as is the food. The food selections were varied, and the use of spices unique. Yes, you can still get the all american burger, but you may want to explore the Piri-Piri skewers instead. I ordered and sampled most of their menu items the first time I was here. I loved three menu items in particular (Samosas, Dates and Pie), so I returned the following day and enjoyed them in peace. I sat in a corner at the bar area. Bree assisted me during my stay. She recommended the Samosas, but they were out of Lamb Samosas Thursday night. I got the vegetable samosas. They were delicious. However, I had to have the Lamb Samosas to complete my meal here, so, I returned back Friday, sat with her again at the exact same table and waited an hour and half for this. The samosas were well worth it! She also recommended the Bacon wrapped Dates. Since I had never had this item before in my life, I was curious. The dipping sauce provided matched the sweetness of the Dates and the savory bacon perfectly! I tried the Shepherds Pie. It was utterly delicious! So, I had the whole pie to myself the following night. The Salmon was good. Rice as a side with this dish was delicious. Vegetables as sides were also steamed thoroughly. Felt healthy eating those along with the protein. I tried the Ribeye as well as the Filet Mignon. They were just OK. Surface was more charred than what I am normally used to. I could not cut a clean slice using the Steak knife provided. Too much lingering fat. That was a let down. Bree recommended a few cocktails. Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned was strong and good. Made a reservation and was sat outside under the somewhat covered large patio. Although a few heaters were outside it was still very cold. I then asked if I can sit in the smaller covered patio as there were several tables available and it was definitely much warmer in there. The hostess shared that those are all reserved and that you have to be specific when you do your reservation. So because we were all hungry, we decided to sit and eat. The entire time we sat outside in the cold very breezy table , those tables I asked about remained open, including the specific one I asked we could sit at. I remember a time when going to the El Dorado neighborhood bar was something to look forward to on a Friday night after a long week at work. The place itself, now known as "The Eldo" has been around for several decades, and it used to be a place where you could unwind and take a load off. The managers and bar/ wait staff then treated you like family and always happy to see you back again. Sadly, this is not the case anymore. In the late 90's-early 2000's, the bar itself was not affluent or trendy, but the food was good, the manager in those days was pleasant and happy to see everyone, and even the one-man band guy belting out his tunes was great to listen to. Like I said, there was something to look forward to. Fast-forward to current day and you have a completely different story. While they still offer tasty food (at times) and a place to have a cold one if you're thirsty, gone is the charisma, kindness, charm and the feeling that the manager(s), bartenders and wait staff do really care that you pay patronage to their business and spend money there when there are other choices. Such was the case the evening of April 7, 2023. Chalk it up to an arrogant and unbefitting manager, named Kevin, and an inexperienced annoyed, rude, aloof bartender, named Kelly. Three strikes (and zero stars) for how you handled my complaint. Strike 1) Train your inexperienced waitstaff to ask permission before they clear off dishes. I almost lost what was left of my dinner because I turned my back to talk to my companion and the young man assumed I was done. I could stand to shed a few pounds and perhaps he thought I'd had enough dinner. So needless to say, when the same inexperienced waiter came by later and threw out our to-go leftovers, I was upset. We had just spent $75 on appetizers, a couple drinks, and a fish and chip dinner. Money is hard to come by these days, so throwing out a complete appetizer without asking the tablemate if it belonged to the guests is wrong. I feel communication was severely lacking in this person's training. Strike 2) Demeaning your customers and making them feel badly for complaining when something is not right is just plain WRONG on all levels. In all fairness, Kelly, the bartender did ask that a new order of appetizers be made up for us since the waiter had thrown them out. However, her lack of emotional intelligence, annoyance with me, her RUDE and aloof tone was uncalled for. Then, high-fiving your waiter and telling him "It's fine that you screwed up" then looking over at me and rolling your eyes is petty and shows how immature and inexperienced you really are. Being pretty and filling drink orders quickly should not be the only prerequisite to getting a job at the Eldo. Where are your manners? Keep your EQ in check, girl. Rise to the occasion. Strike 3) See Strike 2. A manager demeaning his customer when the customer is attempting to explain the situation is just plain WRONG. Kevin, the "manager", apparently has taken classes on perfecting Tit for Tat and has evidently received straight "A's. Kevin, you should never go down this path with a customer. No one was yelling, as you thought, although it's so loud in the restaurant that you practically have to in order to be heard. Letting the customer voice a complaint without interruption, and listening to what the customer says is worth much, much more than the attitude and tongue-lashing you gave that came as a side dish with my redone appetizers. It doesn't make a difference that you feel like defending your staff to me at the time, please remember your role. Ask yourself if you thought you handled this situation correctly? Try switching shoes and learn how to diffuse instead of inciting a bad response. Kevin, as the manager you are a reflection of the establishment you work for. Seek appropriate customer education yourself, then educate your employees on how to communicate clearly and effectively, actively listening to customers, and exhibiting positive body language during customer interactions. You and your employee should apologize for the problem without making excuses, express sympathy for the customer's situation, and assure the customer that the complaint will be addressed immediately. It's Restaurant Management 101, Kevin and Kelly. As always, a friendly and calm attitude can keep the situation from spiraling out of control. The "Eldo" has lost me as a customer because of Kevin and Kelly. I'm sure they couldn't really care less, but please know that people have choices on where to spend their hard-earned money. Please be grateful and happy they choose to spend it on the owner's small local business. Moreover, if a customer is dissatisfied with something, don't get into an argument. You're not prison guards. Park the bullish attitude. Always listen, respond politely, and offer solutions. Lastly, to Trevor, if you still own this business, please train your staff not to be bullies and unkind. Go early and get a seat in the bar! The food and the service can't be beat! I ordered a Greek salad to split with a friend not knowing the quality of food to expect. I wish I had my own order. It was literally one of the best salads I've had! You know how when you go somewhere and you want to to order something different to try it? We been here twice now and both visits have been really enjoyable! I can't say that I was all that familiar with South African food but, I love it!!!! The food here is a great mix of English/British, Indian, and some American bar classics like wings and sliders. Personal favorites are the fish and chips with lots of malt vinegar, of course! Also, the peri peri chicken, which is probably the most famous South African dish, is very tasty! Next door they have a take out / dessert area with thrifty ice cream and cookies. First time here was on Halloween - I ordered two tavern burgers to go - sadly the burger meat did not have much flavor if any at all - the sauce on bun was plain as well, Fries were cold and not crispy - so we were disappointed since hear so much good things about this place. I also ordered the butter cake a la mode - but no a la mode (Ice cream) was provided - even thought I asked the to-go server if it was in there - she said yes.... i will grant them that it was halloween and they were dressed up young high school - early college - young lads - maybe distracted ....but my bill was still $45 for food that was not very enjoyable. read more

OMG, what a jewel within walking distance from our home. I have lived in the neighborhood for a long time and never really came here before until recently. This review is way overdue! First of all, the food is wonderful, the prices are reasonable and the service is AMAZING! Every server that we have had are fast, friendly and have great suggestions on food and beverage.
