They have a great drink menu, and the vibe is dimly lit with a cozy atmosphere, but still very family-friendly. My family and I went to THE ELDO to celebrate my son's 55th birthday last night. We were expecting great Rib Eye's and a great dining experience based on our past visits. This time however begining with the glasses of water that were promptly brought out. Our first reaction, all 6 of us was abject disgust at the taste of the iced water. It had an ultra strong moldy taste and odor and awful aftertaste like used dishwater or that it had been filtered through old, crusty, dirty filthy gym socks. The entire water service, all 6 glasses was unbelievably nauseously stale. No amount of lemon could eradicate the smell and taste of sewer water? We asked for bottled water but we were informed that there wasn't any available. I also ordered iced tea with the thought that the tea would be made with the same disgusting Pliny Beach tap water. I'm a Vietnam veteran and i have experienced some really awful water before but this was absolutely the worst I've ever tasted. GROSS! It was enough to gag a maggot. I might suggest either install a reverse osmosis filter or if there is one already, thoroughly replace the filter and clean the algae and mold out of it with bleach. The awful water put a bit of a damper on the rest of the meal. I had asked for a baked potato with the toppings be served on the side along with some Worcestershire sauce for the potato. It took three (3) requests over fifteen minutes to finally have a container of Worcestershire sauce brought to the table. By the time I was able to prepare the potato, the broccoli and carrot side had gone cold. The steaks were acceptable but not of the same quality as we all remembered from past ELDO visits. We had an appetizer of fried zucchini and two big Pretzles which were served hot fresh and tasty. My main issue was quality of the water. GAWDAWFUL does not EVEN begin to describe that HORRIBLE experience. read more

They have the typical salt and pepper at the table and they also elevate the experience by offering "gunpowder" seasoning which is their own blend! AND their own recipe of ketchup. I literally use the gunpowder seasoning in my whole plate (Don't get the ribeye if you aren't a fan or rich marbling) Service is typically very fast and attentive... they work in a very pro dominate "team style" literally so many different faces per meal and everyone helps each other it's actually nice to see! Love this place! I have lived in Long Beach since 2022 and this has been our go-to place to celebrate all that time. The food is great, ambience is pleasant, and servers have always been lovely. The ONLY bad thing about this place, are the hostesses.. They all have seemed pretty unfriendly and relatively bored...and if you have a reservation and the place is empty, they are going to make you wait at least 15 mins. Every time. First time visiting to celebrate a birthday, and the restaurant was much bigger than I expected. Parking is pretty limited -- your options are either the small lot, a darker area behind the building, or nearby residential streets. The portions are HUGE! We ordered appetizers, and about 10 minutes later our entrees came out too, which felt a bit rushed. There was so much food that we couldn't even finish half of it. I ordered the salmon pesto and absolutely loved it -- tons of flavor and really delicious. For dessert, we had the butter cake, and it was amazing. Overall, I'd recommend giving this place a try. I passed this place for years. Finally tried this place out with reservations. This place gets really packed. Parking can be difficult to find, pending on the hours you arrive. Parking is tight, meaning if you have a large truck it can pose a problem to fit in the tight spaces that are provided. Checked in with the front host. Wait time was 15 minutes. We were greeted and seated at our tables. The ambiance was very nice. Since this is a South Africa establishment, you had some type of sense you were in the Saraha. Ordered drinks of Beer and cocktails. Delivered to us in 5 minutes. Prompt service! Ordered Beef Straganov and Beef Pot Pie. Entrees did not dissapoint! All was fresh and delicous. Okay long overdue review. We went here for Valentine's dinner. Originally we had their signature steak in kind. But we saw the pasta menu, and quickly changed our minds. It did not disappoint! The Eldo has a super fun and casual vibe. Their menu really does have something for every palate, making it a great place to gather with friends, family, and more. It gets pretty loud because of the crowds, but it's still a nice and fun ambiance. My friend and I tried the Shrimp au Gratin, and it was amazing!! I would definitely get this appetizer again. The Eldo is a bar/pub with South African flavors and it's located off Studebaker and Spring in Long Beach, across the street from El Dorado Park. I came for happy hour on a weekday and they offered $2 off appetizers. I got sliders, veggie samosas, and a side of fries. I feel that the sliders tasted great. The buns were light and nicely buttered, they came with a "pink sauce", and the beef and caramelized onions nicely rounded out the burger. The samosas were my favorite item of the meal. It packed flavors that you don't normally get in an Indian-style samosa. Maybe because they serve the samosas with sweet chili sauce rather than chutneys; however, I would order it again. As for the fries, I felt that they were crispy; however, I felt as if it had an aftertaste that I didn't enjoy. If I get fried dishes, then I'd probably go with onion rings; however, I think that I'd like to try more of their South African offerings as they're unique! read more

Had my first visit with my mother the evening of Thursday the 5th of March 2026 for evening rations. This establishment has a South African theme and I saw both the USA and South African flags flown outside. This establishment is only open for evening rations and was very busy when I arrived and there was a wait for a table. We were called and seated. The waitress pointed us to a QR Code and I told her neither of us do QR codes so she brought us a tablet that had the menu. This establishment does NOT have paper menus. Apparently this establishment wants people to go digital which I GREATLY resent as I am an analogue guy and I do not want to go digital!!!!! This is the one and only reason why I am giving such a low grade. Men's washroom was clean and had paper towels available... good. I ordered the cheeseburger and shake combo deal. The burger was quite good as were the French Fries and the chocolate shake was excellent. My mother ordered the lamb and was very satisfied though she took most of it home. Normally I would automatically give the lowest score possible if a sit down restaurant lacks a written paper or laminated menu or if an establishment forces me to use a kiosk to place an order. However I requested a sample of Biltong and the waitress honoured that request. For this reason I am adding an additional point for a total of two points instead of the one point that I would have otherwise awarded. If a letter grade was assigned as is done in school, this establishment would get a D. NOTE: If this establishment had a paper or laminated menu available, I would have awarded four out of five possible points which would have equated to a letter grade of B. The reason I would not have given a perfect score is because I noticed that some of the guys who work at this establishment wore their shirts untucked which I consider to be highly unprofessional. read more

The Eldo was pretty cool, I like the overall look, it has a very modern look and the food was pretty tasty as well. There were about 9 of us for a Birthday dinner; the servers were on top of the service and making sure our orders were in. The only thing that I did not like is that I could not do a substitution for the peas that came on the side of the shepherd's pie. I would give the shepherd's pie a (8/10) . It was very tasty. For my drink I ordered a French 57, which tasted somewhat like skittles, and I loved it. Stopped by to try this out after golf. We came around 5pm on a Sunday and the wait was about 45 minutes. It didn't seem packed due to seeing a good amount of empty tables but we didn't question it and waited. We got seated outside where they're were only about 4 heater lamps. Definitely not enough to cover all tables, or the one we sat in. The South African food was delicious, however anything that was considered bar/pub food was mediocre. I enjoyed the lamb samosas, and prawn curry the most. We also tried the fries which was a pretty small basket for what it cost, and the steak nachos. The cheese was a weird light orange color, not sure what it was made of. My biggest critique would be the service. When my friend asked for steak sauce and a box to go, multiple servers forgot and ended up giving us other peoples items. Our main server was apologetic on their behalf, but it seemed like the restaurant was low on staff. I made a reservation for a party of 10 the day before and was accommodated with the stipulation that everyone ordered entrees per the manager. I'm not sure how they would dictate that as it wasn't stated again upon being seated; but it was not an issue. The waitress was on her JOB and managed our party well. Came into the Eldo because I found out from a friend that they do half off wine bottles on Wednesdays! The bar was moderately busy but with the fast service you wouldn't be able to tell! My friend got a cocktail and she was obsessed! The bartender's drinks are delicious and made it to the table so fast! Our server was Emily and she gave the greatest service! First time and we are definitely going back. We sat outside in the covered patio. Even at 7 PM in August, it felt really comfortable. It's well shaded. We loved the garlic bread appetizer, and fried zucchini. It was the best fried zucchini I've ever had. Very crispy batter. We had the beef Wellington, which was delicious. Not sure what has happened here but the ribeye I had Friday night was definitely NOT the quality I'm used to from The Eldo. I've had the ribeye several other times here over the past few years and it was amazing. However, my steak on Friday (my birthday) was inedible. Tough and gristly. I tried it in several spots but it was the same. I finally told the waitress that it was not at all what I expected. She suggested that I try a new one. Which I did. The 2nd one was MUCH better, but STILL not like the ones I've had in the past. At least I was able to chew it, but there were still a lot of gristly parts. I'm the gal that LOVES the fat, so it's not uncommon to see me gobble up the entire ribeye and leave nothing. I did leave several pieces on the plate. I tried but had to spit out several. I'm highly disappointed. We go to the Eldo quite often, as we live very close by, but usually for happy hour/appetizers. I'll still go for that but I'm thinking next time I want a ribeye for my birthday, I'll head down to the 555. read more

Brought our friend who is from South Africa here hoping that she would get a little taste of home. She is from Durban, and we saw that this restaurant had Durban Lamb Curry. The ambiance was nice, and the restaurant was busy, so we knew the food must be pretty good. Our party got the ribeye, surf and turf (ribeye with shrimp), Sheppards pie, and the lamb curry. Our friend LOVED the curry and said it reminded her of home. The pie was also good, and my surf and turf (ribeye cooked medium) was cooked perfect. Locals definitely know about this - reservations are a must or you won't get in at meal time!! inside bar area, a little noisy large outside area- cozy, but nice restaurant vibe. The food is amazing ! Family, friendly kid portions are absolutely huge. Adult portions you're guaranteed to take home leftovers unless you're hungry. All the desserts we tried were amazing. The restaurant is connected to an ice cream stop next-door Scoops. Lots of wonderful flavors to choose from for all the desserts as they go next-door for the ice cream and their dessert items. The service was very attentive and fabulous! We highly recommend the Shepherd pie, the fish and chips and the beef Wellington! The parking lot is small and tight. You can tell locals are welcome as there is bicycle parking. What would make this perfect for me is if they had at least one ice cream item that was lactose free! Although we live close, this would be a restaurant we would definitely go to even if it was an hour away. This place is a local gem! Magnificent food that makes your cravings go away from anything you pick on the menu. The restaurant itself is superb, when it comes to the service. The dark translucent esthetic look you get from the inside, is nothing from how it looks from the outside.
