I came here to see Oh Wonder on 10/6/2015 for under $20. Pretty nice small venue, but my favorite is still the Troubadour. However, it is way better than the Observatory in Santa Ana. Both the opener, XYLO, and Oh Wonder rocked. Sound and lighting was pretty good for the most part. However, I thought at times the microphones could have been louder for XYLO since I could barely hear her at times even though I was at the front. Set times are posted on the door and since the show was sold out the line to get in went around the block to get in. There are some couches to sit and you can stand pretty much anywhere and get a nice view of the stage unless you're a hobbit. The restrooms aren't that big so I would go before I come if you want to avoid waiting in line. They had the merch booth set up to the right of the stage by the restrooms. We found parking on the street so yay for free parking. The area is a little sketchy, but if you're with friends you should be ok. Lots of food and bars in the area to eat and drink at before or after the show. If an artist you are a fan of is performing here then definitely buy a ticket because this is a nice venue for lots of new talent. read more

A smallish venue, disco ball light everywhere, cash only to get in! Cost was about $14 (my friends and I took the last of the atm's cash so I hope the people behind us were more prepared than we.) The bar still takes card which is good- the gals got amaretto sours and tequila mules which were pretty much just tequila with only a little ginger ale, so you get your $9 worth at least if not the delight of having to drink it. We found parking at a lot just up the street at the Citibank- $8 but there should be street parking if you get there early enough. Acoustics are good? Loud enough where my ears were ringing slightly afterwards but then again the lineup had some pretty epically powerful loud voices. Go Lincoln Durham and Little Hurricane!! All in all a great, easy way to spend a Friday out with friends. read more

It was a long fun night. Arrived at midnight after a concert at Nokia theater and there was a good size line out front. It moved pretty quickly though. There was also the hot dog lady out front piling on the condiments and grilled onions. Mmm. Don't worry, we'd be back after dancing our asses off mamacita. We were about 5th in line when the bouncer said only 20 peeps would be allowed in for the rest of the night, but we didn't have to pay the $5 cover. Sa-weet! Went in and it is a small venue, but Funky Sole rocked it out! The music was refreshingly different. I liked it a lot! I came here for a Moth event. The place is like an over-sized dive bar. Very dark, huge bar, plenty of spilled beer, loud bathroom and a stage... ok the last one usually doesn't exist in a dive bar, the other stuff is consistent. The Moth event was awesome, so I'm reviewing it more than The Echo, but the space was cool and set the mood well. Whether it's laying down the boogie at Funky Sole on Saturdays, or seeing your favorite up and coming band in an intimate location before they blow up and tour the world, the Echo is the creme de la creme of east side music venues. Pro tip : You can order Two Boots Pizza from next door. My favorite is "The Bird" They've got a great sound system, as well as a smooth outdoor patio if you are a smoker or looking to get some fresh air. The outside has a quaint and intimate lighting to it that suggests a cozy experience nestled in a part of LA that doesn't really feel like LA. In fact it sort of feels like you're on a rooftop in Brooklyn. The best part about this venue is the size. Since it's so small you can usually see some amazing bands in a very intimate setting. I believe even the Rolling Stones showed up and played a set here. Drinks are overpriced. Hipster vibe. read more

My friend and I passed this place twice as we drove around looking for it. Parking was pretty easy and close, but I never like walking around LA late at night. We came here for the Morning Benders CD release, and since they're a Bay Area band, didn't expect much. Besides us, it was basically friends and family only there. The place didn't pack up, which is a shame because it looked like a pretty good space to dance in. The only ones dancing were hyper annoying hipster girls who hadn't bathed in awhile and were on something/anything. There's comfortable/ample seating all around the sides if you don't feel like standing lamely. Openers and headliners went on at the right time, nice sound, everything was great until the bar. My friend was thirsty and wanted water, so we approached the bar to ask. She's underage, and the tender saw so. Before I could explain anything, he chewed me out for even bringing her up. I tried to tell him she was just getting water, but he shouted for everyone to hear that he refused to serve me the rest of the night. Capital asshole. I was steaming for the rest of the night, and wished I had a drink to throw at him. If all the tenders are like that, it's enough for me to never come back. read more

It's a pretty cozy venue. Came here last night to see my fav duo, Aquilo! Great lighting and sound, though not too many places to sit if you don't mind standing. Pretty decent selection of beer that's a bit pricy, so remember to pregame before you get here! The parking situation is not too bad- dollar lots behind the venue and free street parking around the park! The area is not the best place to get crunked during the weekend (go to west Hollywood for that), but there are a good amount of bars around! read more

I have seen some great shows at the Echo, this is the smaller location that is upstairs. Its the little brother of the Echoplex. I actually prefer this little intimate spot over the bigger area downstairs. Pretty easy to navigate to grab a drink and always easy to find a spot. Multiple acts come through here and they get some great people coming through. I have seen Jedi Mind Tricks, Blockhead and Ceschi and Sole to name a few. I love how you can also hang on the side of the stage with a view of the artist. At the Bliockhead show I was sitting on the side of the stage. How cool is that? Not many places are gonna let you do that. If you have an artist that is coming here and you have never been I recommend checking this venue out. Tickets are usually reasonably priced and the drinks are not to bad on price. Oh and if you are hungry before the show fill up at Masa which is close by. As a Los Angeles native, I've found the Echo to be one of my favorite places to be on a Saturday night. Every Saturday night they host a dance event called "Funky Sole". They play funky jams from the 60's & 70's inside while the outside patio plays more swing type music for the most part. Sometimes the DJ's have some difficulty blending one song to the next; usually you'll see people flock toward the better of the two DJ's. (Last night the inside dance floor was almost empty but the patio was PACKED). It's a pretty divey place; really dark, very little lighting. But people on the patio can smoke (herbal usage is difficult to monitor wink wink), and there's a bar inside and outside. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 because the DJ's aren't the worlds best and the bar doesn't have everything, but overall it's a fun place to be on a Saturday night! read more

Los Angeles is known for many things. Its vibrant nightlife, its amazing restaurants and its quaint amount of music venues. The Echo, located right in the heart of gentrified Echo Park, is one of the small, intimate venues where one can go and enjoy a show. I loved the great experience and good time I had here and will definitely be looking out for great and upcoming shows here. Good luck with the parking situation. Hey, if you live, or have been familiarized with Echo Park, you'll know what I am talking about! I first visited The Echo back in March to catch the A-WA show. A-WA are a sisterly trio who hail from Yemen. Their music consists of Yemenite folk pop/rock. They are amazing and I highly recommend seeing them. Anyways, the venue is small inside. They do have a fully stocked bar and a smoking patio. The night began with a performance by Joshua Silverstein, in which afterwards, he introduced A-WA to the crowd. Yes, it did get heated inside fairly quickly. I do believe their capacity is no more than 500. That's still a lot! The sounds, the vibe, the ambience...all made for such a great experience. Diversity and "be yourself" is definitely the theme at the Echo... I came here on a Saturday night for Funk night and had so much fun!! The crowd is super chill, unpretentious, dressed in normal street clothes and just there for a good time. I've never danced to funk music in my life but I just rolled onto the dance floor and start grooving to the music, having no clue what I was doing...but I didn't care because I felt comfortable doing my thing since the people there are so cool and nonjudgemental! Introducing stephy s. She loves vintage clothing from the 30's-early 60's (pre hippie shit). She will usually be found skootin around town in an A-line dress or skirt, vintage heels and a cute little sweater, broach and purse to boot. Now let's conduct a really funny experiment on her and invite her to a hip hop show. (insert dramatic horror music here!!!) What in the hell? How did this happen? So it's my friend's bday and I was taking him out for sushi and then we were going to hit this show with some of his favorite DJ's. I am not really hip to that whole DJ Dancey Cool and Hip Hop Prince stuff, but hey, no biggie, it's a new experience and I love those! The biggest stress for me was, what in the hell was I gonna wear!?!? I mean, I am about the furthest thing from hip hop there is! I started going through my closet hours before the event, thinking hmm, what to wear, what to wear. I even IM'd a few cool kids I know who are hip to that scene and got some fashion advice, but honestly I was really feeling like Julia Styles in Save The Last Dance right about now. And that Gap shit ain't cool! I then decided that cool kicks (those are shoes for the hip hop impaired), a cute zippy (think hoodie, minus the hood) and some jeans would do the trick and so I managed to pull something together and we were on our way. After a small mishap with the list at the door and having to pay a lame ass $10 cover to get into this hipster Echo Plex dance party, we then headed downstairs and started to survey the room. Now I don't know hip hop that well, but this really seemed more like hipster hop than anything else, so my turquoise shoes blended and that was cool! We then proceeded to get pretty buzzed off nice and strong drinks and the bartenders, while not the most personable group in the bunch, were definitely attentive and kept our drinks full and happy. The crowd was pretty east side and had everything from the 90 lb dude in stretchy jeans to the dudes who own Kingsbury on Third. Definitely a mixed crowd. There were also a pair of dudes hanging in the outside area that had to have been undercover cops. Either that or these were real jackasses, because who has an entire grill of gold teefs and a track suit and is asking everybody where "da party at?" Very fishy if you ask me. Overall, I found the downstairs space to be pretty cool, nicely sized and the dance floor was pretty big. Definitely a cool place to throw a private party and have it seem cool as opposed to a rented room. I would definitely go back, but next time, screw it, I am wearing my vintage gear and they can just deal with it! Also an extra star for getting to see Stretch Armstrong spin. This is a sweet little music spot. What's great about the Echo is the intimate stage. I love smaller venues where even if you're stuck in the back of the room, you can still see and feel the musicians playing as if you were in the front. The sound system for the space is fantastic. I saw Frank Fairfield and Horse Feathers perform the other night and the reverberations from the violins & cello sent the entire venue ablaze in music magic. The only bummer about the Echo is their expensive bar. I purchased two whisky drinks for $17. That's the cost of a 750 ML bottle of Jack Daniel's right there. I don't want to suggest anything mischievous now, but you might want to ipslay in an askflay if you're planning on drinking. read more

I think the folks who work the door have got "this isn't the Echoplex; you have to go down to Glendale Blvd for that entrance" spiel down. I know I've had be reminded a couple times that the ECHO is not the ECHOPLEX. So I saw my first show here on Tuesday night, and maybe because it was a Tuesday night, my experience was a few notches better than what I've encountered downstairs at the Echoplex. I suspect this is because they host the bigger names down there, where the capacity is nearly double what it is in the Echo (350). But on Tuesday, I scored easy-to-find street parking just around the corner. The crowd was only occasionally annoying. I got a sound system that cut cleanly through my earplugs. And $5 PBR. That's right, I was at the fuckin Echo. In Echo Park. Of course I ordered PBR. After 4-5 shows downstairs, I'm happy to have finally paid my respects to the sister venue and will definitely look forward to the next show I get to see here! read more

I went to a sold-out Cut Copy show at The Echo last March and it was so crowded that it was virtually impossible to walk from one end of the venue to the other, without trampling on 50 people. To make matters worse, the guy dancing next to me was extremely sweaty, probably due to the lack of ventilation in the club, and kept on bumping into me and putting his sweaty (and stinky) armpit in my face. I almost passed out! However, I saw J-Rocc there in November 2006 and it was not so crowded, which made the experience more enjoyable. Plus, the crowd was more chill, it took two seconds to get a drink, and you had plenty of room to dance. Overall, I'll give The Echo four stars because it has the same vibe as The Independent, Cafe du Nord and Milk in San Francisco, which are three great venues to see up-and-coming artists. I'd just avoid going to any shows that might sell-out, unless you want some guys sweaty armpit in your face. read more

This is a super cool and super small venue in hipster-ville LA. They have a really good sized bar and the drinks aren't too pricey for a venue. They have mostly up and coming bands, but you might be surprised at some of the bigger name bands that play there too! The stage is low, so you can really see and connect with the musicians. There is tons of good restaurants in the direct vicinity, they use digital ticketing (big plus these days!) Apparently they have a couple cool and fun residency nights, but I am not a local and probably wouldn't make a special trip for them. Maybe one day ;) Keep this place in mind when you are looking for a new band! or just a good old fashioned live music venue, the way bands used to get signed before the advent of social media and electronic music yada yada yada, I sound old! read more

Back in the day, I was the Program Director at a respected college radio station, had a wardrobe consisting almost completely of thrift store clothes and band shirts, had no clue what popular radio was playing, and went to shows about twice a week. Now I'm a lame adult who shops at Forever 21 and can sing the entirety of "My Humps." That was depressing just to type. Jeez. Anyway, I've been meaning to go to Sunday's Part Time Punks shows for quite some time, and when I found out Beach Fossils was playing, I put on my handed-down from Gori S. Old Navy shirt and headed over. A dude was checking our IDs while we waited in line on the overpass and I noted many folks around me still had stripes on their licenses indicating when they would be 18 or 21. I AM SO OLD. They were dressed in thrift store clothes and band shirts and hideous skintight Lycra pants (those weren't a thing in my day, thankfully) and were smoking, which I guess is still hip and indie (why not skip the cancer and spend the money on more stupid pants at American Apparel up the block?). I haven't been to the Echo in years, but it's what I remember: surprisingly big, really dark (perfect for drunken hookups!), a bar in the back and one closer to the stage, a patio for smokers. Looks like you can also get pizzas from Two Boots brought down, too, although I don't know where you'd put it. The stage is high enough to ensure most people can probably see without feeling too isolated from the band, the lighting was good, the sound was good (Beach Fossils were great). Inside security appeared to care, but weren't going crazy on anyone. The women's restroom was better than I expected, although someone had spilled beer on the floor and left the pint glass in the stall (classy!). Tip for my fellow short ladies: In the corner next to the bar closest to the stage is a little cement platform with a big fan on it. If the fan's not on, the platform will boost you a few extra inches, plus the distance means you can see pretty well. The benches next to the little platform are a couple inches higher, but I found dancing on squishy seats hindered my already-poor balance. read more

Decent venue, overpriced crappy beer, and riddled with some scheming bartenders. I showed up with only six 20 dollar bills, planning on spending it all...until... I handed the bartender a $20 for 1 beer, he says "$5" and then he doesn't give me change. Realizing almost instantly what happened, I flagged him down and kindly explained the situation. He proceeded to lie, telling me he just gave me change, and demanded I show him my wallet...so I did, and all I had was 5 $20s...he then continued to tell me I was wrong, and that he was positive I gave him a $5. I saw him tuck the $20 in the $5 dollar slot in his register, so I asked him to check for me...he refused, but I didn't let up. He eventually realized I wasn't going anywhere and gave me my proper change. This was the first thing that happened upon walking into this venue. I ended up doing the math and counting my money after I got home and I was 100% right. Good effort Echo, but I've seen better. read more

I'd only been to the Echoplex downstairs so I was all curious to see what the upstairs was like. Well, turns out it's a lot smaller--like maybe half the size--but that's great when you're there to see a band up close and personal. Came here with some friends to see Penguin Prison, which turned out to be a great show despite these weird fratboy/fratgirl douchebags that kept messing with the band's stuff on stage and wanting the band to put on these lame hats they brought, etc. I was hoping the bassist would brain them with his guitar, but no such luck. Anyhoo, the ambiance and decor's nothing to write home about but I enjoyed the laid-back intimate vibe. The bartenders were nice but my friend complained that they put way too much ice in his drink, so beware. I look forward to coming back for more shows here. read more

First off, I love The Echo. I've been going a long time and have always enjoyed the venue. This review is concerning the female bartender on 6/29. I ordered a beer and a mixed drink. I paid, and started to put my wallet back in my pocket when the bartender threw her hands up and shouted "Really?!?!" at me. I was stunned. For the record, I have never not tipped. The band had just gone on and I simply forgot. Against my better judgement, I ended up tipping her. Regardless, I'm 44 and can't believe that I was treated in such a way. Unbelievable. read more

In this case it's another "Love it!"* I've been going to dance clubs a looooong time. Let's put it this way, I was doing the bump when it was new. In the many decades I've lived in LA, I've gone to every kind of dance club here and finally found one (The Echo's Funky Sole) for people who LOVE to groove, get down, bump, grind and get back up. Damn, last night was fun! The DJs, Clifton and Miles, know their funk! They brought the funky grooves and the people came. Great crowd. Most people there just let loose, dancing the night away. And it didn't hurt that the bartender never made me wait. No matter how crowded it got, I got my Jameson and ginge rale right away. I will definitely be back! read more

"I just got here and already in I'm love. I wanna have babies with this place" was the text message I sent Frank about 1.5 minutes after walking into this place. Ok, so I went on a Wednesday night, when it is known as the "Dub Club" and is known as reggae night. The night that I went there were live performers and they were absolutely amazing. I ended up chatting with a guy from the Ivory Coast, Africa and he told me that Dub Club is actually a very well-known venue in the reggae world. Apparently the guys that performed that night had come all the way from Jamaica just to perform at this place. So, apparently, it's kind of a big deal. When you walk into this place, be prepared to be transported into a whole other world that you had no idea existed in the middle of Los Angeles. It has the most awesome grungy, underground feeling, as though you have just walked into a basement that has been converted into an underground reggae club in the middle of New York City. The crowd is definately what makes this such a cool place to go. Nobody takes themselves too seriously and are genuinely there just to have a good time. Everyone was friendly, grooving to the music and talking to each other. Not once did I feel like there might be a fight or that someone was looking at me the wrong way. There is such a chill vibe to the place. I think it has to do with the fact that nearly everybody was high. Seriously, while we were standing in line a few joints were being passed around. And once inside I saw a sign that led you to the smoking balcony and, after inquiring, I learned that the type of smoking that was going on was not cigarette-smoking. Were I a weed smoker, I just might have loved this place that much more. Oh, and the drinks are unbelievably strong. One and a half long island's had me preeeeeetty toasted. This is now my favorite club EVER. Hands down. If I could give it 1.5 million stars, I would. read more

Very chill and intimate music venue (it's the smaller, sister venue of the The Echoplex). View of the stage feels slightly constricted by the layout, but any spot is close enough because it's so small. Sound is good, and bar service is quick and friendly. Tickets are inexpensive and hip hop shows never get rowdy. There's plenty of street parking along Sunset Blvd. Plus, metered lots south of Sunset. Tons of restaurants and bars along the block (Masa, Senor Fish, El Prado, Xoia, etc). Cool for before/after the show. Also, The Echo is part of Jukely. Look into a Jukely membership (free admission to tons of shows for a nominal monthly fee) if you love live music. read more

On Sundays The Echo is supposed to have a party named Part Time Punks. Well, I was there last Sunday and it should have been called Full Time Hipsters. It was horrible. My friend and I felt like we died and went to hipster hell. There were two bands that played nothing but electronic/indie/lookatourmacbooks music. Barf. After that there was a dj who played only the most obscure indie rock around! Duh! He probably got his playlist from the back of Nylon. And just to make sure he got some additional cool points, he made sure to play one song each of the The Smith's, Joy Division and Siouxsie. You are forewarned. I'm still trying to figure out how I got to Echo Park on Saturday night...but I'm glad that I did. When I walked through the doors of this venue (with no line or cover, woo hoo) I was very pleasantly surprised. I felt like I was transported back to the late 60's/70's. The dimly lit room was full of people getting their groove on...litterally. The theme was soulful Saturdays I think. The DJ was spinning James Brown type music and people were getting down... I was waiting for someone to call me a jive turkey or soul sistah. I think this bar could be classified as hipster... Everyone was very casual and relaxed and having a great time. I was drawn into the spirit of the crowd and started dancing right away. When it get's too hot you can go outside to the patio. There is also a DJ outside. The next time I just want to get out of the house on a Saturday night and dance without all the hassle's of clubbing, the Echo will be my first choice. read more

First up, I am one of those indie music snobs. I read Pitchfork. I write my own music blog where I write about all the stuff I listen to because I read Pitchfork. I live in LA and I love music so I'm pretty lucky: I get to see just about every single band I like, and it doesn't cost me very much, because no one listens to these bands and they play at small potentially cruddy venues like The Echo where tickets are always under $20. Thusly, I go to a lot of concerts, and I have seen more than I can remember at The Echo. The shape and decor of the Echo seems like what you would get if you knocked all the walls out of the middle of the house and just left the oddly misshapen outline of the exterior walls intact. It's painted, I think, entirely black, and there's some mirrors and seats that I've never sat on away from the stage and most of all it doesn't matter. There's a bar, you can get drunk, etc. What's important to me at a venue is the sound quality, and for a long time I really didn't like The Echo. A lot of the bands I'd seen here sounded pretty much awful, namely The Dutchess and the Duke and Viva Voce both suffered from loads of static and just a generally poor mix. It got to the point where I kind of groaned every time I had to go see a band at The Echo. The most recent memorable show I've seen here, however, changed my opinion. The sound quality at Dan Deacon's gig was incredible, which lead me to think that maybe a lot of the indie bands I listen to sound like crap live on purpose. On top of that the audience was awesome, which leads me to the best thing about The Echo: The audiences are pretty cool. Sure, you're going to end up with a crowd of hipsters at any indie show in LA, but at least at The Echo it's not the majority that are douchebags, just the minority. You don't get tall people who stand right in front of you and never care about the short people behind you. At the Deacon show the entire audience was dancing and getting really crazy, like really really crazy, like stuff I've never seen before, like everyone was high on drugs, and it made the show so amazing. It's probably because The Echo is 21+ only, so all the stupid hipster kids can't get in, but Spaceland is 21+ and still seems to attract a majority share of douchebags, so maybe that isn't it. Also there are a lot of hipster girls here who are cute and you don't usually have to worry about them being underage, not that I'd ever talk to one because I'm scared of girls for the most part and have nothing interesting to say because I am too middle class---and especially because I have a girlfriend. They're the kind of hipster chicks who dress up in scavenged clothes and name the outfit and put it up on LOOKBOOK or their Tumblr something. Serious hipster chicks on parade here. If you like talking to women who look either indifferent or scared all the time, this is your place to be. When I saw Ted Leo and the Pharmacists here on a summer night it was horrible. The place was sold out, wall to wall bodies trying to see the stage all the way to the back, all dancing and moving, and no air conditioning save for a single fan blowing air at the back of the crowd. You were basically choking on the sweat and BO that clogged the air like a thick cloud of fog. Seriously, it was horrible. I will not come to The Echo for a sold out summer concert. But other than that The Echo is a pretty sweet venue! Maybe some day when I can play acoustic guitar and grow out a beard and write songs about girlfriends who regret abortions and have eating disorders (so middle class!) I can stand on The Echo stage proudly playing my songs and know that my music sounds like crap on their system probably because I want it to. read more

If you love wearing denim jackets, black vans/converse, and tight jeans, this place is for you. If you sport a mustache and aviators, stop reading this review and get in your van and drive. If shabby-chic is your bag, throw on your vintage dress and window shade sunglasses, text your BFF on your Treo, and tell her to meet you at The Echo. Take the bus, ride your one speed, Borrow your mom's BMW, whatever you have to do... Get to The Echo. What I would consider the crown jewel of the Echo Park hipster scene, lots of different looking types huddled together en masse, trying hard to look like they are not trying hard to look at you. All in all, it makes for a fun evening. Upon entry, you'll notice a medium sized stage flanked by a bar on the left, and a psuedo-cafe on the right. Walk along the side of the stage and you'll find the mens room (complete with opposing doors which guarantee you'll smack someone in the face as you enter) and an outdoor smokers patio. 4 picnic tables make a great place to sit and chat up guys or girls who stroll by. Beware the "Smoking Nazi" that patrols the corridor. (The rule is you need to be past the fence!) Overall, The Echo reminds me a lot of a bar in Austin called Emo's. It's an indie-rock mecca that books great music yet spares little profit on plush. Decent drinks, interesting crowd, and next-wave acts sure to find stardom soon. read more

Another small, no nonsense music venue for up-and-coming and soon to be never-was artists. There's nothing remarkable about it, in fact, other than its reputation for being a reliable place to discover fresh music. If you enjoy seeing new bands grow and develop, and finding some musical gems along the way, the Echo is a good place to start digging. Plus, they sell tickets through Ticketweb rather than through the devil (Ticketmaster), so bonus points there! read more
