Taix's 321 Lounge reminds me of a bar from a Cohen Brothers film where people who are up to no good set in motion their inevitable downfall. The vibe is midcentury, neglected, gloomy, and masculine. (I'd bet that, fifty years ago, 7&7s were served here by the puncheon.) It's not the best stocked bar, so one shouldn't try to get to fancy with the mixology. The wine list is rather threadbare considering it's a French restaurant, and they were even tapped out of Kronenbourg 1664 -- the only French beer on offer -- on my visit. Cocktails are not very Gallic, either, mostly featuring vodka, tequila, and mezcal to appeal to local tastes. (While the French aren't the biggest cocktail drinkers, I'd expect to see the French 75, Kir/Kir Royale, Boulevardier, and Sidecar at the very least.) Honestly, 321 Lounge could be attached to any kind of nondescript restaurant, or no restaurant at all. There's nothing particularly French about it. But that also doesn't really really matter. Taix and 321 Lounge has a special authenticity that has nothing to do with France. As far as food goes, the specials for the brief happy hour aren't very exciting (Tempura shrimp? Again, not very French...), and it's best to stick to the restaurant's main menu. Service was direct and no-nonsense, somewhat earthy, but friendly. I was taken care of well. When I entered, there was only one other table occupied; when I left, the place was on its way to being packed. I must say, I really enjoyed the dark, throwback feel of the 321 Lounge, with its wood paneling and brick walls, faux barrels and faux barrel vaults. Places like this are rapidly vanishing in Los Angeles, so I hope 321 Lounge and Taix will stick around for a good long time to come. read more

Some friends and I came here after dinner to just hang out some more over drinks. This place is so lovely!!! Here's what I had: BASKET OF FRENCH FRIES - $6.95 If you enjoy McDonald's French Fries then you'll enjoy this basket of wonderfulness. It's huge and sharable. It comes lightly seasoned and is so yummy! And so cheap for such a fancy place! HOT BUTTERED RUM - $8.50 I'm so happy they have this! It's such a great fit for the season and it was delightful! Service was great and we stayed for quite a awhile. I enjoy lounges that isn't filled with young hipsters and is it gets loud...Nope not here! It was very chill, even for a Saturday night! The decorum was nice and have me a sense of warmth. The football game was on the huge screen and even though many people watched no one got rowdy nor loud! I'd love to come back here for dinner. (Drank/Attended 10/06/11 TH - 10/09/11 SU): Thanks to a music festival, I finally had the reason and pleasure of hanging out here the entire weekend enjoying bands from around the world and event drink specials. The 2nd annual Filter Magazine Culture Collide 2011 Festival invaded the community of Echo Park with another eclectic selection of music bands from around the world. I've eaten at the actual restaurant but never ventured into the lounge with its dark wood walls and equally dark plush leather seats, several small round tables, a fully-stocked lengthy bar, and an adequate stage area. There is also one TV mounted and tucked away in the corner at one end of the bar. During this particular event, they had daily drink specials of offerings from the given bands' region playing that day. Otherwise, Taix 321 Lounge has daily happy hour specials. Their everyday prices on drinks are the industry standards from $5.00 domestic beer, $6.00 import beer, $2.75 soda, alcohol starting from $5.00 (varies by type, age, etc.), and mixed drinks from $7.00. If you need to get your grub on, you can order from a select menu (didn't order anything from the menu). With respect to when bands are playing here, the sound quality is good. But the lounge is such an intimate setting, you almost don't need speakers as you are nearly upfront and personal to the band. The sound also tends to stay within the area. All things considered, the service was on top of things with two bartenders and one waitress working the "floor". They were quick to take your order (after you fight your way to the bar, or wait for the waitress to come your way). Parking is ample as they do have their own parking lot. But, if it happens to be full there is plenty of street parking (metered and non-metered) throughout the neighborhood on any of the main streets such as Alvarado Blvd., Sunset Blvd., or Glendale Blvd. As I always advocate, if you can walk it please do so. Overall, Taix 321 Lounge lends itself to a comfortable atmosphere...so much so that you may want to pull out a tobacco pipe from your smoking jacket, open up a newspaper, and slowly sip on an aged cognac. I would like to come back and experience it on any normal day sans a rocking music street festival, to get a more realistic idea how things are. I can certainly imagine many locals hanging out and maybe late-birds coming in for a nightcap. I can't say there is much value gained but none lost either based on the prices I quoted above (average total bill based on four drinks was $25.00 before tip). Taix has a pretty great thing going for lunch. Katie B and I met up here for a meeting, and in the interest of full disclosure our meal was bought for us. But, even if I had paid it would have been about $15, which isn't all that bad for a sit-down French spot. I opted for the soup and salad where you can either go with their standby of French onion (never have been a big fan of onions so that was out) or the soup of the day. On the day I was there the soup happened to be lentil and I'm a huge fan of that. The salad was fairly basic - large with lots of greens and vinaigrette dressing. The soup comes out in a huge pot and then they ladle a serving into your bowl. As you finish your bowl the server asks if you'd like more - kind of like refillable sodas. It's quite a bargain if you like soup. Katie and I sat in the 321 lounge version of Taix rather than the restaurant portion. They are quite separate and have very distinct feels. And let's be honest, Katie and I are definitely more of lounging ladies. Anyway, the lounge is very dim with a beautifully large fireplace, rolly chairs and a bar that makes you feel like the bartenders know exactly how to make the old-fashioned (or similar French cocktail) of your dreams. Alright, after spending a Sunday and Monday evening here, I'm upping my rating to 3 stars quickly closing in on 4. Three stars for Sunday because of our waitress who gave a hard time to the first of our group (of three) to arrive and hold down a table for the rest of us, claiming that he was taking up valuable real estate. He explained the situation and offered to move to the bar, but she begrudgingly allowed him to stay seated. She remained quite aloof through most of the evening but had warmed up to us a bit by the end of the night, I think. Sunday nights are apparently French Toast nights (that would be the comedy show - sorry, breakfast fans). The laughs start at 8:30. Four stars for Monday because we were well taken care of by Joel. We arrived early during happy hour ($3 Beaujolais, $3 Taix Pale Ale, $5 wells, $2.50 pommes frites) and enjoyed the football game amongst other fans. The main reason why I'd like to give this place 5 stars is because my boyfriend surprised me here with a surprise party. And they have pate. Alot of my upbringing was under the french influence, so this place was a tad nostalgic. i do wish the waiter spoke french, but we're in america so i understand that you can't win em all! Whether it's the duck, the rib eye, the chicken, the french onion soup... it was all tasty. i woul give the food a solid 3 stars, and with the atmosphere, it marks it up. plus their drinks are pretty nice to boot. We would always pass by and never go in and we finally decided to go in and we were quite happy that we went in the decor was a little old but everything else was great the food was amazing the service was on point. I gotta say, when the soup du jour is Split Pea, and this girl raves about it, you know a pig has earned its very first pair of wings somewhere. On Sundays, I can enjoy a vat of split pea soup (Sunday's soup du jour), complimentary bread and a side salad for $9.95. It's like living in a medieval French land with jesters of the court (free comedy on Sundays at 10) humoring the crowd like their lives depended on it (most would be executed on the spot, sadly, but still entertaining). I've also indulged in steak frites, a burger, and nicoise salad on other occasions where I wanted something heartier, and while they might seem expensive for an old French restaurant lounge, they get the job done, are sizable meals, and leave me fully satisfied. read more

If a random French pronouncement, Taix would be pronounced "Tay". However, according to the staff, Taix is a family name that is pronounced like Tex. Dave A. pronounces 'taish' but KCRW calls it 'tex'. Call it what you want but it's the only french restaurant bar in Echo Park. I had another Happy Hour adventure here one evening, right before my unsuccessful hunt for Ricky's Taco's in Silverlake that apparently no longer exists. The bar tender is awesomely awesome, and there is a cool 'Garage Sale' shelf where their premium alcohol is half off. Plus, if you want something for happy hour that they don't make, they can substitute for a Garage Sale drink ( the bartender can make your drink, with a slightly different twist, but it's really good) They have a small happy hour menu- but the food looks really good. I only tried the frites. I like the ambience. It's got this old-school vibe, kind of like the Dresden room but not so stale and cheesy. Decisions, decisions!! Review Taix, or review the bar? Since most of my time spent at Taix is in their bar/lounge, I'll review that. BUT FIRST. I don't eat in the restaurant here very often, but every time I have I'm impressed by how truly, almost surprisingly good it is. A lifetime ago, I used to work in a French cafe and I know that French cuisine is hard to get right. Just because the French love their butter, carbs, and cream doesn't mean that their dishes are necessarily heavy and without subtlety and polish. Throw into the mix that this is LA and everyone and their mother has some sort of dietary restriction or snobbery, and French country cuisine becomes an even harder sell. Still, there's a reason why Taix has been here for so many years. My best friend's parents have been eating at Taix since they used to be in downtown LA, and they still come here for dinner, sometimes. My favorites on their menu are the moules maison (mussels steamed with cream, leeks, and chili flakes,) trout almondine, and the lamb shank braised in wine. Everything I've ever ordered off the "cuisine grand-mere" menu has been fantastic. And the soup is always a great bet, in it's classic tureen. I've been on dates here for dinner and I think it's a nice setting - a classic, iconic establishment rather than someplace flashy and trendy. (Side note: if Bernard the waiter flirts with you and your date gets pissy and jealous about it, he's probably an insecure douche who isn't worth your time.) They pour the drinks stiff at the bar, and all the of bartenders here are super personable and witty. This is the kind of bar you can take your friend who you haven't seen in person in 10 years and you want to have an actual conversation (though, the music can get a little loud on the weekends.) I have been going to Taix for the last 7 years, ever since I moved to Echo Park. It is THE BEST (and indeed maybe the only) French sportsbar in town. Big ass TV screen for watching the weekly progress of your favorite team. When there is a key game, like Superbowl or NBA playoffs, Taix pulls out the stops and puts TVs in a few of the smaller rooms of the restaurant so they can accomodate more people. This creates a significant party atmosphere. FUN TIMES! Most nights they also have live music after about 10 o'clock. They book a really eclectic mix of sounds: rock, fol, art music, all kinds of lovely things to listen to and push you our of your musical comfort level. Some great, some so-so, but always fun in such an intimate environment. Rencently they have made some changes to their food menu. They added a chicken pate, which is delicious, and fried calamari. a butter lettuce, beet and goat cheese salad, a risotto and a few other things along with their regular weekly specials. This is the type of place one can let their inner annoying French personality out to romp the room, nose high in the air and if state legal laws allowed it, puff on a cig. All the while enjoying the setting fit for a frog. I love their lounge. Minus the fact that it's missing that smokey smell, this place just takes me back to long before I was ever legally allowed to go into a bar and just has that 70's-80's decor vibe going. It's darkly lit and just has a cool lounge lizard feel that comes with the territory and is a spot to settle down in. If you're not going there for a drink and vegging, the food here is pretty good as well. They have a really good chicken pate that even this chicken snob enjoys. If you're looking for more of a sea living creature, the calamari is really delicious. Though considering I love me some calamari in whatever shape or form, it may be a little biased. Everything about this place I just adore. The mahogany bar, the history, the atmosphere, the bartenders, the fireplace, soft supple chairs, the staff. The chance of sitting next to a happy wine sipping septuagenarian are just as good as sitting near a beer drinking twenty something. iPhones get whipped out all the time while the oldies reminisce about the good old days. It's all fine here and no one seems to mind. All the cocktail waitresses (we really need to change that job description), are wonderful and charming. Can get a bit vexed on occasion but overall, really nice girls. The bartenders are almost always nice and attentive, but like the girls, sometimes get swamped and busy but are never pretentious or rude. Check out the happy hours, 4 to 7 everyday, and on Monday Filet Mignon is 20 bucks! Everything on the menu is exceptional, even the burgers. The garlic butter sauce they use in the escargot makes me melt into a warm puddle of happiness. Sunday is funny night starting at 9 so if you need a chuckle and a pint you might want to check it out. Was in there tonight and happened upon a comic named Shane Moss and he was fucking hysterically funny. At least for my kind of humor which is mostly irreverent and leans to the social question of BS kind of laugh. More in the Monty Python kind of perception, and this guy was on it tonight and nearly had my sides open a couple of times. If you don't check him out here then just find him where ever if you can. Thanks Dine LA for a wonderful menu at 29.00 I chose to start with french onion soup. I have never had that before, so cannot compare it to to others. It was a crock of wonderful flavor. My main course was bistek with pomme. The steak was tender and flavorful. The fries were ordinary. I followed up with a chocolate mousse which was very creamy and rich. Based on the regular prices, I probably wouldn't go back, but with the Dine LA menu prices, I definitely would. The service was extremely slooooooooowwwww. This is a great classy, old school place to have a cocktail. My husband and I always come here to celebrate victories and it's a great place to bring out-of-towners, as it's an historical landmark-probably the oldest establishment in Echo Park. Ambience: super cool dark cozy vibe with a great long bar, plenty of tables with plush comfy chairs, and a fireplace (lit when appropriate). Food: Outstanding. It's just really great food, healthy and homemade tasting. The presentation is uniquely old school French - they bring out fresh carrots, celery and radishes along with the bread and the soup-which is all vegan (yay!) except for the Onion Soup is brought out in a huge silver bowl and scooped into your bowl with a ladle. They leave the bowl there so you can replenish it yourself-so it's kinda like an endless bowl of soup. They also have a late night menu now, which is great. everyone should come here at least once. For us, it's an old standard! Note: The "proper" restaurant part is in the back. We sometimes eat there on Holidays for a sort of old fashioned, special experience-the service is great!- but most of the time we sit in the bar area I've described above. Warning: The only negative about this place is that the music that's booked there is almost always somewhat inappropriate for the space. I envision this place having like a jazz trio or a piano man...even a trip hop sorta low-fi dj thing would be cool... something relatively quiet so you can still converse...but almost every time we've been there when there's been music, it's been like a punk band or a rock band, something just too loud and in your face for the space. I fear my wife is becoming an alcoholic. She works over eight hours a day and is slowly bringing down her job from the inside (not always intentionally of course). After a stressful week of work, she'll tell me that all she's craving more than any solid emotion is a good glass of beer. I tell her that a beer is good once in a while, but that she's now being too dependent on in. Actually, one day she had a minor panic attack and wanted to go get one at 1 p.m.! But I'm losing focus. I'm suppose to be talkin' Taix. I really like this place. We discovered it on pure impulse while we were driving down Sunset Blvd. and pulled in following a gut reaction. I have a pretty good history concerning gut reactions and this just adds to the solidarity and effectiveness of these actions. We walk in and discover pleasantly than an acquaintance of ours is performing tonight. Joy! We stick around, get a dark booth in the corner, order two Korenbourg's and some calimari and sit down. Next to us is an older Armenian couple that seem to be minding their own business when suddenly the wife picks up her cellphone and starts blabbering on and on and on about nothing (to be honest, I can't give you an opinion on her conversation as I understand not a peep of Armenian). The band for the evening starts to play and that stops her from yelling into her clap trap device. No. Instead, she starts to yammer on to her husband laughing and talking the whole time the band is playing while she's stuffing hors d'œuvre into her already stuffed face and stomach; her husband remains resilient the whole time. I see my wife next to me about to be thrown into the throes of sleepiness thanks in part to her heavy work schedule and to the lightly alcoholic beverages. In my slightly inebriated haze, I tell her how happy I am to be with someone who isn't a jabbering bitch. At the moment I feel the plop of her head landing right on my shoulder. The gal just couldn't help it anymore and feel asleep. I realize at the moment we should head off. I should also mention about the guy who sat next to us, starting punching the air and hopping up and down while he was under the convoluted and unnatural effects of some sort of drug, but instead I will mention we just went home, turned on the air conditioning and enjoyed a quite night of sleep. We still come here the most anytime we need alcohol in some sort of social setting with interesting people who are all easily twice our age. Nice experience again and again at the place! Joy! Joy! Ok, so this review is strictly the bar minus the food. Didn't try any starters. Just drinks. Came to meet some friends and watch the Lakers Friday night. By the time I made it all the way from Agoura Hills (where I work) the game was 3/4 deep and everyone was one and a third drunk. Cool space. Dark, pleasant size, everyone was very laid back. It almost had a living room vibe. Comfy chairs and little round tables. Perfect for games or just meeting up with a small group. If you don't mind sitting at several tables, a large party would have no trouble working out here at all. A live band was setting up after the game but we left before they got started. I'll be back for sure and would like to check out their food some time. read more

Taix is neighborhood comfort food - a real cheers bar in an increasingly digital, haughty and pretentious atmosphere. Taix begs you to put the phone away, chat with your neighbor, dip your bread in real butter and really relax as you sink deep into their leather captain chair style bar stools. The light is low, but not so low you couldn't bring a book and read. If you wanted to be that person. And the regulars are crusty, but one friendly hello cracks that exterior and soon, from bar to booth, everyone's cheering on the Dodgers in one voice. Comfort flows from the bartenders taps, the servers' wine pours and the chef's soup ladles. You come to Taix to feel at home. When my friend and I came here to celebrate Bastille day we feasted on rich pate spread over perfectly crusty french bread. We indulged in garlicy escargot swimming in butter and melting on our tongues. We sipped on perfectly made Kir Royales and moved on to expertly paired french wines. It's a little bit like Bordello downtown. A little bit Vegas lounge. A little bit High Fidelity when Marie De Salle sang. The lounge is like another world as compared to the rest of the restaurant. Its a dark room with a few key lights.. round tables with candles in the center. A bar lined along the left side of the wall. A stage up front. Entrances at the back and on the other side. Drinks mixed well. Cute and attentive bartenders. One star lost because if this was a standalone bar I'd probably have enjoyed it a bit more... it seems like it would be a bit of a hidden secret that way. The rest of the restaurant is truly spoiled by this. It made it a more commercial type venue. I'm looking forward to seeing more live music here. It looks like it'd be a great venue for some jazz or old fashioneds with a date... and maybe a "happily ever" type moment. I love eating in the 321 Lounge. It's like a return to the Rat Pack days, very retro with magnificent martinis to match. Don't miss the calamari and ask for a "mini Caesar" to go along with your steak frites. If you don't want the music to drown out conversation, then get out before 10:30. I loved the ambiance and the food was delicious. The free french bread was freshly toasted and the servers were attentive in the beginning but disappeared halfway through our meal so it took us awhile to order dessert and get the check. We ordered the pate, beef short ribs, shrimp cocktail, prime rib, and chocolate mousse. Everything was great and that was the best mousse I've ever had. Haven't had a meal here as I've only been here to see my friends band. But bar wise, $6.50 for a jack and coke isn't too bad. First was weak, second was stronger. Upon arrival, something smelled wonderfully delicious in the lounge. I wouldn't mind coming back to try the food as I've heard good things from friends who've been. Ambiance seemed really nice, although the bar tender was a bit rude. I know I look young, but don't talk to me as if I'm a teenager, dammit! I would give this place 5 stars, but sometimes the bands they let play here are downright terrible. On the whole, however, this place demands respect as a surviving hang from yesteryear Los Angeles. I had my birthday dinner here a few months back and the staff gladly accommodated 30+ of my closest friends and well-wishers. The older, kindly bartender kept refilling my glass with gratis whiskey as I sat at the bar enjoying the hell out of my myself and everyone else within earshot of my incredibly clever jokes. Taix is usually a mellow place to grab a drink (try their signature house brew) and maybe some choice French cuisine. The grub is a tad on the pricey side, but the quality is there (yummy). The wine list is impressive, if you're into that kind of thing. I like that it's kind of a classy sports bar, too. I've always enjoyed the service, and I hear they even have happy hour specials now. Not a place that I would stumble into on my own, Taix is where I go to hear good music and drink perfect cocktails. Also to watch the local hipsters do their thing (I even bought one of those scarves in order to blend in and be less conspicuous). My bar must-haves are as follows: dark lighting, good booze-makers, delicious beers, comfy barstools, a foot-bar, and decent prices. Live music and purse-hooks are an added bonus. Taix delivers on all but the purse-hook. Also, the valet girl is super friendly and sweet and makes you feel like you know her even though you don't. read more
