As many others have stated the bag policy is a ridiculous and the security here is really aggressive. I've been performing and attending shows in Los Angeles most of my life and I've never been so disrespected by venue security. Came here to attend a show for Grand Ole Echo in September '22 and was treated very poorly by security. I left an honest review about the situation at the time and the Echo reported my review and had my review taken down by Yelp for using foul language. I feel the need to follow up with a clean version because I still find the experience upsetting. It's no secret that the independent music scene is suffering at the hands of Live Nation which bought the Echo/Echoplex & The Regent as well as The Observatory & Chain Reaction down in Orange County. It's sickening to see an entertainment monopoly destroy spaces where beautiful art once flourished. Time to find new venues. I have made great memories at the Echo performing and supporting my friends/local music scene but after my last experience as a patron I refuse work with The Echo in the future or spend my money there. read more

Just been here one time but it was good. Parking was available on the street (It was free if I parked after 6pm). Sound was descent and there was a good view from everywhere. Pizza was even available to order from next door. My only request would be to add white flood type lights (since they don't/can't have a spot) on the front of the stage. Without the white everyone just looked washed out red or blue. Ruins any type of video you want to take & post. read more

Had an absolutely horrible experience here. Went there for a show for the first time only yesterday. It's a small venue and security was checking bags outside and there's a metal detector that you have to pass through before entering. Okay, cool. Now apparently, according to the security guy, it's a new Live Nation policy and not a venue policy, but bags have to be ridiculously small to be allowed in the venue, like small clutches only no bigger than a large cell phone. My wife had a regular sized purse. We took a ride share to the venue, expecting to have a few drinks. So we couldn't just go back to the car and leave her bag there. We asked if they had a coat check. Nope. There was also a double standard. Many of those who were initially turned away were personal friends of one of the bands or the band management, so even if their bags were larger than the guidelines permitted, they were allowed to enter. Now add in another problem: this policy is not stated clearly ANYWHERE -- not on the Echo's website; not on Live Nation's website; not in the email confirmation for the show. Live Nation's website says oversized bags and backpacks are not permitted, which in itself is a bit vague. Nothing more than that. Then there's a legal issue. What if someone needs to bring certain medications? What if a woman has a baby and needs to bring a breast pump? None of that will fit in a cell phone sized clutch. The policy is very clearly flawed. We spoke to management, showed them the confirmation email, the stated policies on the Live Nation website. They refused to budge, only told us to ask Live Nation for a refund for the tickets (which was denied). I don't think I would ever go to a show (or attempt to go to a show) at this venue again. And will also avoid Live Nation at all costs (as their customer service has been horrible). If 0 stars were an option, I think that would be more deserving. Hands down the worst experience going to a concert ever. And the policy is completely arbitrary if there is a bag search and metal detectors. The justification: to reduce venue staff contact with personal belongings. Huh? The result: a smaller audience for the artists, negative experience for the fans, and bad business for the venue. read more

Easily one of the best venues in LA to see up and coming music acts. There's a parking lot a couple blocks down from the venue. The sound is always too knotch here. Drinks are a little expensive though. I love that they have a smoking patio. read more

The echo used to be cool in when I was a teenager now it sucks there is mean and shitty security and if you are a woman or any sort of human that doesn't exclusively use their pockets for all their belongings be prepared to be denied entry because there are NO BAGS ALLOWED. It's doesn't say this on their website or on your ticket purchase but it's their ridiculous policy, I took an Uber to the venue so I didn't have a place to put my bag and they wouldn't let me in even after I showed them all the contents of my bag and put my things in my jacket pockets, the echo hates women read more

So excited that I got to see Holy Wars and Night Club tonight. Two of my favorite Post dark pop bands! but as soon as we walked up we were told we can't wait in line yet that they don't open till 8 (we were there at 7:30). we walked away for a couple minutes came back and there was a line forming. We got up to the front they said that my wife's purse was too big, TOO BIG????? she had her phone and her wallet in it nothing else. So we had to get out of line go back to the car to drop it off and considering neither one of us had pockets we had to hold onto our stuff all night. we are in our mid 40s to 50 we're not trying to smuggle drugs in the place we're not trying to steal the plastic cups they serve drinks in what is the reasoning behind it? I work some of the biggest and baddest clubs in Hollywood you guys are small beans. anyone in charge would lije to debate I'm HERE!!!!! we walk into the club and Maggie has to use the bathroom (we were like 10th in line so first group in) and the woman's bathroom was already clogged and pouring out of the toilet immediately. We go to the hipster bar and you can't open a tab you have to pay separately every time you order something which led to my card getting flagged. The drinks were weak Is an understatement. THE DJ SUCKED!!!!!! (I'm a shitty DJ and she made me feel good sbout myself). The only good thing is the sound was good the bands were awesome. the place was overcrowded. and no help from security to firect traffic through halls. How I miss the old school debauchery of venues that let you open up a tabs, pour you hard drinks. and treat you like they've known you forever everything so cold and uninviting now. no personality from the beanie wearing bearded bartenders. seems like they were so about being so forward thinking yet there's more paper used by charging people individually and not taking cash and using disposable cups instead of washing glasses. (Drank/Attended 10/06/11 TH - 10/09/11 SU): Thanks to a music festival, I found myself having the pleasure of hanging out at this old local musical haunt of mine the entire weekend enjoying bands from around the world and event drink specials. The 2nd annual Filter Magazine Culture Collide 2011 Festival invaded the community of Echo Park with another eclectic selection of music bands from around the world. Back in da' day, I would frequent The Echo to catch up-and-coming bands (and in some cases well known bands) in this great intimate setting among all of the local and kitschy storefronts along Sunset Blvd. There is one long well-stocked bar with alcohol, beer, and soda (don't recall seeing any wine). I must give props to some of the wonderful bands I saw here during this festival: Liam Finn, WIM, He's My Brother/She's My Sister. Unfortunately, there are no happy hour specials to speak of. However, their everyday drink prices are the industry standards from $5.00 domestic beer, $6.00 import beer, $2.75 soda, alcohol starting from $5.00 (varies by type, age, etc.), and mixed drinks from $7.00. If you need to get your grub on, you can order from an extremely selective menu from a nearby pizza place and they will walk it over. Also, if you were to attend a gig, I believe the ticket prices is around $10.00-$15.00. The sound quality is good. But as I mentioned in my review of Taix 321 Lounge, it is a relatively intimate setting (larger than Taix 321 lounge), you almost don't need speakers as you are nearly upfront and personal to the band. The sound also tends to bounce off the concrete walls. All things considered, the service was on top of things with two bartenders. But from what I remember, the service was always good. Heck, just give them your credit card and start a tab and be done with it! Parking is limited since they don't have their own parking lot. So find a spot on the main street of Sunset Blvd. (metered) and others throughout the neighborhood such as Alvarado Blvd., Glendale Blvd., or the numerous side streets. As I always advocate, if you can walk it please do so. Overall, The Echo is a great place to see a band. The atmosphere is very no-nonsense, extremely casual, and all about providing the basic needs to simply enjoy the music and people who are in attendance. This ain't the Westside; this is Echo Park, dammit, so leave your attitude at home! Plus, every Saturday is "Funky Sole Night", so you know the lovely ladies are out and about while patrolling and profiling. I can't say there is much value gained but none lost either based on the prices I quoted above (average total bill based on four drinks was $25.00 before tip). The Echo is an intimate place to experience quality live music. The Echo is the kind of venue that completely immerses you into the music you're listening to. Most of the space is standing room, however, there is a bench along the perimeter.They have an extensive cocktails menu, but I was especially excited to order Cold Nitro Coffee. A great way to stay caffeinated throughout a fun performance. All of the prices seemed commiserate and fair and we enjoyed quality customer service from the bartenders. The Echo is a really nice place to enjoy live music and don't forget to get a few pictures in the photo booth. read more

Visited for the first time a couple nights ago and saw a couple great bands perform like The Tennis System and Blushing. However, my issue lies with a woman bartender that was working that night. After a few drinks, I decided to have some water. My friend asked for a cup before, and the male bartender gave it to him no problem, as he was for other people. But when I went to ask for water the woman bartender pulled out a water bottle, so when I saw it I kindly told her "oh actually, sorry, but can I just have a cup of water instead?" and she looked at me and said, "get water from the sink in the bathroom next time" as she handed me my cup. the venue was cool, but she was not at all. That comment was unnecessary, and I don't think I'll be going back too often or at all. But if I do, I'll be avoiding the bar. read more

The older "upstairs" sibling to the Echoplex is still the superior space. The Echo is a wonderful club-sized setting to see bubbling-under artists, with many non-local acts making this their first stop in LA. Not only is the space intimate and the sound top-notch, but there is couch seating along the edges and a pretty spacious bar area off to the side. Parking is cheap - we're talking $2 in one of the nearby lots if you don't luck out with a free street spot, which makes coming here worthwhile even from more distant parts of town. read more

The one bad thing and it's a BIG ONE, they book too many bands for some concerts. So you think it starts at 8:30 should be home relatively early on a Wednesday nite, don't want to ruin your Thursday, NOPE! With driving and everything you get home at 1am or later. I do have to drive almost an hour, but who wants to get home that late. So I just end up not going to concerts there, sucks! One time I had to sell my tickets cause the main band was coming on at like 11:30, wasted my whole nite, sucks. Do like the bands they get though. Oh well. read more

It's perfect for what you pay for, and that's because you're here for one thing only: the music. The best spot is right in the middle of that dance floor, unless you're old. Then scoot to the back booths. The shows and artists: As of late you can see artists like Melodies Echo Chamber, TV on the Radio, Com Truise, Tycho, The Orwells, Beacon, Lord Raja, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Glitch Mob, Lido, and the list goes on. Legends like Beck, Airborne Toxic Event, Rancid, The Pixies, and The Decemberists have all been here. You can see artists here before they become legends. The deal is that you come here for the music, and only the music. If there's a day where you don't enjoy the music, you may not belong here. It won't be at a huge loss to your wallet or the place. If you love experimental and fresh beats, you should get your ass down here. It's one of the few places in LA where you can experience great musicians who are on great independent labels like Ghostly, Fat Possum, Sub Pop, Matador, Carpark and the list goes on. I would give this place zero stars if I could. Make sure to double check the price of your drinks because the bartender Becca tried to rip me off. Last night my boyfriend and I came to The Echo to see a concert and decided to buy a drink. I asked Becca which drink had the most alcohol in it (as we wanted to save some money and buy one strong drink to last the night) and she recommended a long island which was not advertised or priced on their menu. When she handed me my check, I noticed that the price for my ONE long island was $50 which seemed insanely overpriced. (the size of the drink was small and came in a plastic cup). I also found it sketchy that my receipt showed the final total of $50 but did not show how it was broken down. We then let Becca know that we had been overcharged for the drink and she took the check back from us so that she could fix it in the system. She couldn't figure it out so she called the manager Selena to come to the bar to fix it. Selena came and they both were at the register for a bit talking. Both of them did not appear to know how to credit my card back. Becca then came over to us and informed us that $50 was actually the correct price for one long island and that she forgot to mention that to me before making the drink (seems like a pretty big detail to leave out). She went on to explain that it was so expensive because it was a really strong drink that often made a lot of people "super wasted." She then was suddenly super nice and went on to say that for the trouble she would make us another long island for free- as if she was doing a really nice thing for us when it was really her making excuses to cover for herself. My boyfriend and I didn't believe that and felt that two long islands for $50 (or $25 each) still seemed pretty high. We then asked Selena if we could have a free redbull as well ($5) to help make up for the charge. She gave us a hard time and Becca chimed in and insisted that we were already getting a good deal by getting two long islands for the price of one. My boyfriend reiterated how we felt we were being overcharged and expressed that we just wanted a redbull to help compensate for the overcharge (even though we felt it still didn't make up for charging $50) and patted Becca on the shoulder. Selena then went on to say that my boyfriend was "harassing" her bartender (not really sure how waiting and trying to get their attention so that they could compensate us for the overcharge resulting from THEIR mistake or a pat on the shoulder is harassment). After a while, Selena asked us if we would leave them alone and not come back if they gave us a redbull, making it seem as though THEY were the victims. They ended up giving us the redbull but we feel it was still unfair and that we were still overcharged. I truly think they didn't know how to credit my card back and made up an excuse to cover up for themselves rather than owning up to the truth. They both were rude and unapologetic. My boyfriend asked others at the bar with similar cocktails how much they were charged for their drinks and it was in the $15 range. I am sharing my experience in the hopes that this will not happen to anyone else because it was a really awful feeling knowing that someone was trying to take advantage and rip us off. read more

I went last night to see Froth, and got there early so I checked out the other bands. For the most part, solid music, thumping bass, would've liked more volume on the singers, but overall great sound. It is a small venue and even though it was pretty packed, the outer perimeter of the club was lined with benches, so throughout the night I grabbed a seat here and there to rest my feet. Six to eight dollars for beer, you can order from the bar for pizza next door, but I ate before coming in. Cool, relaxed, and overall friendly venue to catch local talent. My kind of place, and I will return. read more

The Echo is the first place I ever visited in Echo Park, when I came to see Rilo Kiley in college. I remember my mother, who lived in Los Feliz as a teenager, was very freaked out when I told her I'd be going to Echo Park at night. I understand that the neighborhood has gentrified greatly in the last ten years, but I can say with complete assurance that the Rilo Kiley concert was not dangerous. My second visit to The Echo was just last week, to see Built to Spill. I stopped following new music around the time of that Rilo Kiley concert, so I really don't get out to concerts very often. (My last one before this was also a Built to Spill show, at the Troubador in 2013. What do you know? Built to Spill was my favorite contemporary band in college.) This is why my friends and I showed up at 8:45, fifteen minutes after doors opened. The venue was almost empty, with slow ambient music and dim lighting--it felt kind of like a high school dance, but for ghosts only. The opening acts went on at 9 and 10, and Built to Spill didn't take the stage until 11. (To be fair, I would've known this if I'd checked The Echo's Twitter.) Luckily, I enjoyed the space, and was able to get some decent beers to pass the time. I got a Golden Road Get Up Offa That Brown and some kind of Stone IPA, both $8--not cheap, but full pours. There was some seating along the back of the venue. We could've taken it but decided to stand instead so we could claim good spots when the place started filling up. The show was sold out, and the venue was packed by about 10:30 or so. We weren't industrious enough to claim front and center, but fortunately, The Echo is tiny, so there wasn't really a bad spot in the house. Unfortunately, we got cut by the worst couple in the world. They started at our side, where the woman was dancing aggressively and jostling me like mad. Then they just hopped right in front of us and kept raging, claiming a huge chunk of the floor as their personal playground. The dude (who was at least fifty) had a fucking backpack that he kept ramming into my stomach. It was all pretty infuriating--like when you just know some asshole is trying to cut you off, and then they do, and you have to sit behind them in stop-and-go traffic for an hour. Even so, I had a great time at this concert. Built to Spill was wonderful, and it was a real treat to see them in such an intimate venue for $25 a ticket. I don't know what other acts would draw me out for a concert on a Friday night, but I'm sure I'd love to see them at The Echo. Next time I'll just make sure to check set times and bring mace to protect myself from concert assholes. read more

The Echo. Not to be confused with The Exhoplex (which is downstairs). Actually, I've been told that The Exhoplex is a completely separate venue entirely. Even though.... 1. they share the same name 2. when you go to echo.com there is news and updates for both venues. 3. plus! like I said you can enter either one by going up or down a flight of stairs. But anyway..... Getting back to The Echo..... It's the more intimate venue of the two. The interior although rather small is efficiently and very strategically set up. Ok, walk with me..... Lining the perimeter walls in the space is dope, very comfortable black leather couch. No bull, it literally lines 75% of the spot - the other 25% occupied by your friendly bartender. What else......oh yeah! There's a Dancefloor to the right of the stage (from the audience perspective) about 9 x 12 ft Dancefloor space and when your boi is in the building best believe it gets mad usage!!!! And like I said to the left of the stage (from audience perspective) is the bar, WITH COMPLIMENTARY pour-it-yourself-water. Seriously, don't ask the bartenders for water here, they'll look at you like you have mushrooms creeping out of your ears. I love live music. I live LIVE music. You feel me? So when the show starts...... I'm not A. standing up against a wall. B. hugging a drink at the bar. C. on my cell phone checking social media. I'm D. in the middle of the liveness gettin' unbelievably crunk and drowning out in the live music ambiance. Sh-wiiiiiiiiing! If you're feeling a bit claustrophobic and in need of some air...... You're in luck! There is an outside patio area for smokers (cigarettes, I get lit on another kind of smoke and they allow that inside ^_^). At times, you might also find a working bartender outside to wet your whistle if need be. Like I said I love live music. But intimate sets (for me) grasp me a little closer, allow me in a lil deeper with the artist and here at The Echo the venue enhances that experience I yearn for so much so... Party on Garth! We showed up last night to support one of our favorite new bands on the scene called POWERS. I'd only ever been to The Echoplex but never to the The Echo and when we walked in it was kind of strange, because it's small but it's nice enough and works well as a lounge, with their stage off to the side halfway between the exit and the bar. Hell, you can see the band members set up their own instruments, too. We were literally 5-7 feet away from the stage, so we really got to experience the tunes as they were meant to be experienced. The acoustics were phenomenal. After the set I snagged me a limited edition vinyl from the merchandise booth and we left. The people that linger outside of the club are indeed strange and strange looking. The Echo shares space in what can almost be described as a strip mall-like fashion due to having businesses on their left and right. If you're driving too fast you may miss it due to the way it's structured. I'd totally be back if there was a band I wanted to see - most definitely. read more

A dive bar with has a stage featuring some of the best indie acts this side of Sunset Blvd that also looks like it belongs somewhere in the lower east side of Manhattan. Based on beauty alone, this place is definitely not one of the hippest nor prettiest place in Los Angeles. But since they are filled with substance and a very good reputation with music lovers as well as neighborhood hipsters. Sure it is kind of dirty and some of the people there are kind of strange, it is a place that is reminiscent of those venues that good bands somehow randomly play at. You can order food here, but like most dive bars, it is from a pizza kitchen and not from their kitchen. I'm pretty sure they don't have a kitchen, thank God, because it is freaking groddy in here. But yes you are close enough that you can actually touch the people who play here, but you shouldn't, unless they touch you first, then it is all fair game. Also, there are always cute rocker girls dancing all weird to rock music you cannot really dance to, so it looks like they are in some rhythmic trance, but I think I am in love. I looked all over for the time my performer would come on - the ticket said 7. I called echo and it said to look on Twitter. Nothing was posted even though folks were asking for the time. When I came to echo- my first time- they searched my bag and made me chug my water - what is this the airport? It was so distracting and I get inside 7:15 and there's no one there. I go back out and say when is my performer coming on? They said 9. I said well I'll be back then but they said there's no in and out, and that the info was posted outside where they were standing. So now I'm stuck in here with blasting music over speakers - the first performer doesn't come on until 8! It's really too loud and I'm annoyed I rushed over here because they didn't have the info available for when the times of performance would be. They said "you can order a pizza". I thought this venue was great. The back patio is nice for us smokers, and the beer prices are a bit high ($8-$12), but that's to be expected. All the technical elements were on point. The sound for the show was good, the lights, the layout. There were plenty of places to watch from, and video monitors in the back so you can watch even if you're outside smoking. Heads up: no re-entry, and no physical tickets to collect. read more

Went here on a Monday evening with my friends. We were able to locate parking easily. The bouncer at the door was friendly and he let us without any cover charge. There was a local band playing when we went to Echo. It was surprisingly packed even though it was Monday evening.The band was really nice and we all had a great time. There was ample seating capacity on the left side of the stage. They also had a outdoor patio at the back of the club which was really awesome. I can't comment on the drinks since I did not try any, but they looked reasonably priced by looking at the menu. read more

Not my kind of atmosphere. The people that come here are very indie/hippie like and dance in strange motions- usually jumping up and down. The music on a saturday night was mostly jazz- which is nice but impossible to dance to unless I guess you drink- as much as your body can handle. It's pretty divey and the people (though nice) are kind of strange. I would come back. It's good for groups but you definitely don't want to be sober here. I guess if you're here to see a band it may be a bit different. Bathrooms are too small and drinks are a bit weak. read more

If I could give this place a zero I would. The bouncers are sexist and they either harass female attendants or they blatantly act like complete jerks over issues that need attention. My friend was treated like absolute garbage here for no reason. She went outside to get some air and take a call during a concert, they literally told her (NOT BEFORE WE WENT INTO THE VENUE IN THE FIRST PLACE) that she couldn't go back in and she had to wait outside. When she asked for reasoning they didn't give her an answer and just shrugged. Can't you people put a sign up or ANYTHING that says your stated rules?!? This literally makes no sense. If someone goes out for a minute (like they normally do at a hot nightclub) you literally won't let them back in???? Why?? Every other venue stamps your hand so you can re enter? Please don't waste your money on this stupid club unless you want to get harassed by the bouncers and ousted after you wasted 50 bucks on a concert ticket. Thanks a lot. read more

Very pissed at how they treated my friend who clearly had a medical emergency. She almost passed out at the bar getting water and began convulsing but pulled herself out of it to get up. Security came over and she said she needed some air. The security guard grabs her without my assistance and pushes her out the door to the left where when I'm to the right. Thank God she did not pass out again because she would of hit her head on the cement. We literally had just walked into the venue 30 mins prior. I explained my frustration to the guard at the door who clearly saw she was not drunk and he said he would pass it along but who knows if the venue will take action. You guys need to sit people down on the outside or clearly be able to tell between intoxication and medical situations. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen. read more

Nice, small venue with a good bar with reasonable prices. My complaint is the sound quality isn't very good and the volume was a bit high for the size of the room. We saw The Skeletal Family and they were awesome (no synth) but the opening bands sounded pretty bad, though they were talented acts. read more

Came on a Friday night after trying to bar hop. I was already feeling my buzz stepping through the door. Haha the music was great! Very 80's feely and people were looking very hipster status. Good looking people from what I remember. It wasn't took packed,the only problem was that the Sound system wasn't too goo, there was an echo in the music that was a bit annoying and it made the music sound unclear. Getting my drink, I was excited when I saw they had pear cider , I was so very excited to order that. Once I got it I was pretty disappointed with the taste, it tasted like strong now, no pearyness at all. But I was drunk and for 7bucks it wasn't too bad. I seen this guy trying to dance with me but he never made a move, too bad buddy! The music was so upbeat it instantly brought my mood up. I enjoyed it very much. read more

Love coming to see bands here! Great outside/smoking area. Free parking in the lot (if you can find a space). Drinks are not that cheap, but if you're hungry you can order pizza from Two Boots next door. Spent a lot of good (and a couple bad, but that wasn't the venues fault haha) times here :) read more

Fun times at "Funky Sole" last Saturday night. Yes...you got it...hipsters dancing it up to the Soul Train beats. The place was bangin'!! We walked in for a friend's birthday party. Cover charge $5 per person. Pretty affordable drink prices. Mellow bouncers and funk, soul, dancing. Good times! Only gripe I had was the 2nd DJ spinning wasn't as good as the first guy. The black guy (in the suit) was totally killin' it while the white guy after him was just ok (songs didn't lead into the next song and there was a gap in dancing in between songs...if you guys get what I'm trying to say). Overall...it was fun, easy to dance to and the crowd of hipsters were more mellow than your other club scenes. Look for free parking in Echo Park, metered parking spots or pay $8 at the Citibank building. read more
