I stopped by this donut shop which is located in a bustling food court mall in downtown L.A. around 8 p.m so maybe this review won't fully capture their daytime quality. I tried a regular glazed donut, and honestly, I was pretty disappointed. After one bite, I had to toss the rest. it just wasn't fresh and didn't have that satisfying taste I was craving. My Grand Central Market foodie adventures is coming to an end and after trying multiple vendors,including tacos,burgers,pupusas,ice cream,& beer-we decided to try one last thing before we left-I figured I would continue my never ending quest to find the best Maple Bar in the world-I headed straight for The Donut Man booth and checked out what they had to offer. I'm not from the area so I was not familiar with this vendor but I guess they have been around for quite some time,like 50 years in business,so I guess they are held in pretty good regard. I was pretty impressed with their storefront as they displayed many beautiful donuts available for purchase-highlighted by their famous fresh strawberry donuts-the donut that put The Donut Man on the map. But I wasn't here for that-I'm here for the Maple Bar and the Maple Bar only so that's what I got ($2.65) On the plus side-that truly was one of the biggest maple bars I've ever ordered. On the down side-it wasn't that great-not sure if it was sitting out a bit or maybe just wasn't as fresh as I hoped but it was just a tick below average so like a 4.9/10 maple bar-talk about bummer. That being said-I'm 95% sure if I had just tried what they are famous for,the fresh strawberry donut,I would be singing an entirely different tune....next time I guess. Visited Grand Central Market and saw that these are one of the most hyped up stands there. I honestly had pretty low expectations as I had seen pictures and after seeing it in person felt pretty underwhelmed. It kind of just looked like a glazed doughnut with strawberries - pretty messy to eat and nothing special. However, after trying it, I can honestly say that the hype is worth it. The line to order was pretty long, but moved quickly. While one member of our party waited, we were able to go to other stands and get food so it worked out. They also have fresh peach donuts and huge cinnamon rolls that look really good. The strawberry doughnut itself is actually incredible. There is absolutely no artificial strawberry flavor and it is very very fresh. The strawberries themselves taste straight from the garden, some of the sweetest strawberries you'll ever taste coated in a fresh strawberry glaze. The doughnut was also incredible, just a fresh glazed donut. The dough was light and fluffy, and it wasn't overly sweet at all. This pastry honestly surpassed my expectations, and (coming from an initial cynic) I can confidently say that it's worth the hype. Definitely try it out! read more

My Angeleno friend told me about LA donut culture, so of course, we had to get some donuts in LA! We were visiting Grand Central Market and came across The Donut Man's giant display of fresh donuts. The mountain of fresh strawberries piled on a donut caught my eye (I love me some fresh strawberries!) We ordered their world famous fresh strawberry donut ($7.50), a chocolate old-fashioned donut ($2.30), and a tiger tail ($3.75). The fresh strawberries on the donut were delightful. They were coated in a glaze to add to the sweetness. Unfortunately, the donut itself did seem to be undercooked/raw on the bottom. The dough was so wet and mushy, I actually thought it was a "strawberries and cream" situation... but as it turns out, the "cream" was actually just raw dough. I would say the tiger tail is the best value. It's a long tail (over a foot long) and twisted with their classic and chocolate cake flavors. I did find it to be dry - it was not my favorite. Their chocolate old-fashioned hit all the classic, old-fashioned notes - slightly crispy exterior, and soft and cakey interior. Plus, chocolate icing ;). This is one of the vendors inside the super busy, touristy, Grand Central Market. Expect a lot of foot traffic when coming here. I like mentioning parking in most of my reviews and there is a lot parking -- paid parking. There is parking garage across the street $20 for 60 mins) Good luck finding street parking here although I don't recommend it. I like to call myself a donut connoisseur and the donuts here are definitely in my Top 5. And yes, I will travel 6 hours from the Bay Area to visit Grand Central Market just to stand in a long line full of tourists for a maple bar, Tiger Tail, and French cruller. This location of Donut Man is at the Grand Central Market. I have been to their original location and found the original location to be more superior. Their other location is more efficient working the line. I felt like the line wasn't even long but it took a while to move. The case was completely full around 2:45pm. I'm not sure how fresh those were by the afternoon. I had one of the Maple Glazed Raised Round ($2.30) and my boyfriend ordered a few other things. They threw it in a bag and got the donuts touching and the glaze was sticking all over each other. Not exactly best practices with donuts. The donut was not as fresh and tasty as I'd like. First thing in the morning and they have a beautiful display of colorful donuts. They have together tails and HUGE cinnamon rolls. The original was very light and airy. Wow, these donuts are very different from the kind from mom & pop shops (which I love). The dough is very substantial but not heavy. The best part is that it is not heavily fried and the glaze is pretty light too so it is not too sweet. For those that have eaten Taiwanese breakfast, the dough almost tastes like a "you tiao". I got the strawberry because that's what they're known for. The strawberries are fresh and it is good, but I personally don't like fruit pies or any added sugar onto fruits. The overall service is great, the staff who helped me was very nice. Not certain the fresh strawberry donut was worth $7 or not, and they didn't have a single powdered donut. So get ready to get in line because there was a constant line the entire time I was here. As you're moving through the line, you get to see the baker making donuts, then the decorator decorating donuts, and the racks of donuts before you get to the counter where you order and pay. Not much ambiance. It's a donut assembly line. I got a glimpse of the menu and prices on the wall that is posted behind the counter, so I knew the price of a single donut starts at $2.25 each. I ordered a freshly baked strawberry donut and small coffee. Free refills for the coffee, by the way. There's milk at the counter. Service at the counter was friendly. I requested a different donut than the one staff grabbed. He told me, "There's no difference," but if that were the case, then don't mention it and give me the other donut, which he did. The difference was that the donut he grabbed looked like it had less strawberries, and it looked ugly. I found a table and enjoyed the experience of eating my donut and drinking my coffee. The Donut Man is the place to grab a tasty donut at LA's Grand Central Market. This donut shop is located right near the entrance so it's never hard to find. What you will find here is some great, very fresh donuts. I believe one of the great things about this shop is that you can actually watch them making your donuts while you're standing in line. Meaning, everything you're gonna buy here is super fresh and very well prepared. There's a few things to keep in mind about this place, however. Probably the main thing is that it is a very-very popular location. From this, there is commonly a very long line to get donuts here. The last time I picked up donuts, it took me about 20 minutes to get to the front of the line. The biggest issue that causes this wait is the fact that a lot of people get up to the front and they don't really know what they want. Thus, there can be a hangup. This is not criticizing the donuts at his shop at all, this is just a little FYI to keep in mind if you're in a hurry. During off-hours, the lines tend to be fairly short. And, every now and then, there is no line at all. So, this is something to keep an eye out for when you arrive at Grand Central Market. The donuts here are very reasonably priced. Not cheap. But, reasonably priced. Another thing to think about is that a lot of their donuts are on the small side. This is compared to what you may find at other donut shops around the L.A, area. So, you're probably gonna have to buy two donuts to equal the size and volume of most other donuts that you're gonna eat. Again, just a little FYI. The Donut Man serves some drinks, such as coffee, some ice brew, and a few other things. They do have an espresso machine up at the front, but I have never seen them use it. Due to the line behind me, I've never asked them to make me a latte or anything like that. So, I don't know if they'll actually do it or not? Again, just something to keep in mind. If you tea want to you may want to ask them if they'll get that espresso machine going. Or, you can just grab one of their cups of coffee, or something like that. Overall, this is a fun place to grab a donut for an afternoon snack. Or, perhaps to take on the go on your way home. The staff here are always super nice, and they're happy to help you pick and choose your donuts. But please, the quicker you can get through the line, the better it is for everybody behind you. The strawberry donut ended up being pretty good and not too sweet or soggy (I'm sure the short time from preparation to consumption was key)! The doughnut part held up well too. The coffee was a great price (2.50 for a Medium; could also get a small for 2.25 or large for 2.75) and paired well w/ the strawberry donut; 'twas exactly my preference at being more bitter (I prefer that over acidic) but not that bitter overall either. They hang their hat on freshly made donuts, on site, and fresh fruit fillings. They do the glazed donut very well, which is one of my favorite. You really can't beat a donut shop that is consistent and prepares their donuts in-house. The customer service was very friendly and helpful. Of course you should anticipate long lines due to tourism. However, the workers seem to try their best to move the line as quickly as possible. I love their peach and strawberry donuts when in season when I pass through the Glendora area but usually that's few and far between. It's great that they spread out their treats to a wider audience in downtown. I just got a coffee and a raised log. There was already a short line right at the 8a opening. Holy Jeepers this place is special. First things first, please make sure you grab plenty of napkins (bring wet wipes if you have kids). The filled donuts are messssssy. After eating a pizza for lunch, my wife and I were on the hunt for a sweet treat when The Donut Man came calling. This place was pretty busy around noon and for good reason, we spent maybe 5 minutes in line before packing our order and I would wait 50 if I had too. I ended up ordering what they call a Tiger's Tail (this might be the actual name, I simply don't know) and this thing is the longest donut I have ever seen. It's basically a super big glaze crawler with chocolate in it. Oh, how was it you ask? It was bloody incredible. This thing was so doughy and lite, and it tasted so dang good.
