As a tourist in Wilmington, their breakfast game seemed fairly weak. The notable exception was the Dixie Grill. We stumbled across this spot after our first two places didn't pan out. And what a pleasant surprise it was. It was busy but we were able to get in with a minimal wait. The service was fast and prompt. The food was delicious. And it was overall a great experience. I'm not sure when I'll end up in Wilmington next, but The Dixie Grill will be on the list. I suggest checking it out. read more

This cute place is delightful! We got there just after 10 on a Sunday and only had about a 30 minute wait. I ordered the Dixie bowl and the server was delighted I had found their secret menu! The Dixie bowl is bacon, a biscuit, potatoes and eggs topped with sausage gravy. The only complaint was that I finished it all and wanted more! The Dixie Grill has been on my list to stop at in Downtown Wilmington for a while now. The restaurant has been around since 1904. The decor here is a diner theme. I was there on a Monday a little after 11am and the place was very busy. There are booth and bar seating. I chose a booth as it was seat yourself but would have been ok at the bar seating if that was my only option. Service was very friendly and my drink order was taken immediately when the menu was brought to my seat. I was given some time to decide what to order. As much as I wanted to try the benedict here, I went with chicken fingers as I wasn't feeling breakfast that day and I had just had a burger the day before. They were really good and I was given a very large portion of honey mustard. I could have gotten barbecue or ranch too. The fries were a large portion too. Stopped here for Sunday brunch. There was a 40 minute wait so we walked around downtown for awhile. Two seats came open at the bar so we chose to sit there -- probably 25-30 minute wait total. Service at the bar was excellent. Waitress quickly took our drink orders. Pet peeve -- there were no prices on the menu for nonalcoholic drinks. Husband and I both decided on the Farmer's Omelet. I ordered home fries with mine and he the stoneground grits. Home fries were excellent -- cut small, crispy and well done. I liked that all the condiments -- ketchup, hot sauce, jelly-- were right there on the bar. Omelette was stuffed with veggies but did not have much flavor. Side note (and reason for only 4 stars) the dishwasher was rude and berating to the wait staff openly and loudly. Solid place to eat! Went on Saturday morning at around 10am, we had a bit of a wait (15mins) but nothing too awful. It was pretty busy inside and there wasn't much waiting area space. Note: there is only street parking - I walked from our unit so I'm not sure how much parking costs!! The food was surprisingly good, enjoyed the bacon which was crispy and not at all soggy. A great breakfast and lunch spot downtown that has been serving the classic since 1901 with the current owner being there over 20 years. They are currently undergoing some renovations as well. Like many of the well loved downtown restaurants there can be a line and wait. So many southern classics to choose from like shrimp and grits, biscuits and gravy, buttermilk pancakes, corned beef hash, fried chicken, and more. Typical diner food. Friendly service, good food, family diner atmosphere. We had breakfast here while vacationing in Downtown Wilmington. Dixie was an inexpensive option to get breakfast for the family. Bacon was thin, crispy, and smoky. The hash is delicious. The corn beef was amazing, only wished there was more throughout the hash. Next visit we decided to order the hash without the cheese. The cheese seems to take away from the greatness of the hash. The eggs were fresh. The grits were a little too wet for my liking. This reminded me of a deli I went to somewhere in the confounds between NJ and PA. The character did not meet the food requirements. I ordered a Western omelette and it looked like a rubber duck had been run over by a U-Haul. It was yellow and too smooth to be real. No flavor. The cheap chopped ham gave me nightmares. The home fries were really good. The biscuit was the most disappointing. because I thought surely, in a place named after whistling Dixie the prize magnolia would be the biscuit. They also serve iced coffee in mason jars but ironically I love the hot coffee here. You can pay your bill by Apple Pay, using a scan on the receipt vs waiting for the card etc. I'd never used that method before but it was super easy. Bottom line: The Dixie Grill is a good Southern diner type stop along Market St in downtown Wilmington. I've enjoyed the early breakfasts I have had there, and best to go early to avoid waits. I am a fan! The Deets: In visits to downtown/riverfront Wilmington over the years, I have enjoyed visits to The Dixie Grill. In an area where brunch rules on the weekend but most times is not available until 10-11am, it's good to have a place that opens up earlier to get a good sit down breakfast. The Dixie Grill on Market St is a great classic Southern diner type of place as you see when you walk in, with the menu to go along with it. Most of my visits here have been around breakfast time, and they have a great diner type breakfast selection to choose from. My most recent visit I enjoyed their steak & eggs menu choice and it was very good (see accompanying pic). Everything was done as needed, tasted delicious, and was satisfying. The service from ordering to the end of my meal was on point with a bit of a wait at my table initially, the servers were friendly and helpful. Prices were reasonable as well here, but I noted on my receipt there they state that if you use a credit card for payment there is an automatic 3.5% surcharge added. In all, if you are looking for a good general diner in Wilmington but it's not brunch time yet, go with Dixie Grill. Get there early to avoid waits! read more
