My group attended the Dinner Detective at the Omni Hotel in New Haven. It was a Christmas gift for my parents -- intended to spend time together and solve some crime! This would have been an embarrassing gift had they not simply wanted an excuse to leave the house with us! Haha. Honestly, I feel terrible saying so but this was absolutely not worth the money. THE GOOD: The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Every interaction with them was great and you can tell they are good people. That's what makes this review so difficult. I also liked they had the clues available on a QR code to reference. And breaks in between so you can enjoy dinner and discuss. Wine and dessert were good. THE BAD: The whole thing reminded me of a high school fundraiser. It was like the Wish version of Clue. Once we got to the hotel we stood in a long line to check in. Then we had to get right back in line to order drinks at the bar (aka table in the hallway) since they didn't take drink orders at our table. THE UGLY: The acting seemed to be mostly improv. Which is fine for professionals but this was not it. Our group found it confusing, not very funny, and just cringey at times. But the pasta. Guys, what in the world. The vegetarian option was tortellini and it was maybe like 9 tiny tortellini with strips of onion and a few mushrooms. It was so embarrassing we gave my dad, whose dinner it was, part of our dinners. The organizers should consider dropping the price, removing the dress code (wtf it's not fancy), providing better scripted performances, more substantial food options from hotel catering, and offer parking validation.

Really fun and interactive. The cast had a good grasp of where everyone was and played off each other well.

We opted for the inn side rather than the deck side, because the inn side has more entree options. We each opted for our own appetizers. Caprese salad, clam chowder and shrimp cocktail were ordered. Everyone enjoyed their appetizers very much. I had the clam chowder. It was rich, creamy and delicious. The clams were very tender and the chowder was loaded with clams and potatoes. For entrees, most of us opted for the hot lobster roll. It was overflowing with lobster and was accompanied by drawn butter, crisp fresh fries and a very tasty coleslaw. One of my friend opted for the sea bass. The presentation was beautiful and she said it was fresh, light and delicious. All of our cocktails were excellent too. I also must be sure to give credit to the wait staff. They were very attentive and I felt comfortable the entire time, as they were following all the guidance provided by the state. It was nice to relax and reconnect, in person, with my friends while enjoying a beautiful sunset. Such a gorgeous view from the deck! Thank you, Amarante's. We will be back and I'll be sure to tell my friends and family about our great experience.

Upon exiting the elevator they make you feel like you enter "paradise", do some tarot card reading by asking for your birthdate, and then get some beads with perfume dropped on them depending on which card you got. After all of that, none of those stuff mattered. We were served a three course meal before the actual aerobics show happened, but they still had performers perform while we had our meals or a few drinks. I enjoyed their Crescent Dip, which is a hummus dip with whipped feta and comes with a massive chip. The Full Moon Rice I wasn't really a fan of. After those two, they came out with the entree, which they called Fire, Water, Earth; essentially beet, halibut, and short rib. These were alright, not amazing. The third and final course came during the intermission of the show, which was a bunch of dessert treats and they were delicious. The show itself was fantastic. It was more than just aerobics, has there are also singing, dancing, and violinist. You may get wet in the front so FYI. There's also some fire involved. Overall, a well put together show. I'd probably skip the food, but the drinks were great.

The name Townsend is a reference to the location's 20th-century telephone exchange name. LOCATION: The Townsend Bar is located in the atrium. The 40 seat cinema is steps away in a former meeting room. This review will focus on the bar experience. CONCEPT: The bar offers craft beverages as well as a full dinner menu reflecting American cuisine. FOOD: The kitchen is led by French Culinary Institute-trained Chef Joe D'Agostino. Previously Chef D'Agostino served as Executive Chef for the Danbury-based Market Hospitality Group, known for its successful expanding portfolio of Market Place and Mercato restaurants in Connecticut. My first of three meals was disappointing. I had no frame of reference about this establishment (no public reviews of food), so I ordered the Townsend Burger thinking I could gauge quality and skill. The Wagyu burger was dressed in "bacon jam", something I've recently seen on menus but never tried. From what I understood it is sautéed bacon bits and onion slices, with some sweet maple syrup. I never imagined the "bacon Jam" to be as sweet as it was served here ... it overwhelmed the dish. Also disappointing, the slice of red onion was soggy, clearly prepared and refrigerated days ago. As a result this condiment did not offer the anticipated crisp texture and spicy flavor. Finally, the accompanying fries were lackluster. Later that day I ordered the bread pudding dessert, which was stellar. I'm not sure if this dish is prepared by the kitchen, or sourced from a vendor. Other dishes appeared and were prepared like the quality dishes I have come to expect from Market Hospitality Group. SERVICE: Service was unorganized and scattered for a relatively small number of guests served. The server recommended the Townsend Burger, and returned when I was nearly done. She could see I tried to remove the bacon jam and noted that she and her colleagues hate the bacon jam and offered a second burger with bacon slices. I wish she had given me this information when I had asked for her guidance or checked in earlier. AMBIANCE: Townsend Bar is in the atrium, surrounded by trees and overhead glass ceiling. TIP: For a quiet movie and dinner night out, check out what the tiny cinema is playing.

It's meant to be a good time and it is. The food was fine. I thought the actors were great. We only had issues with scanning the QR code for the clues. Probably an internet/wifi issue but they will give you the clues on paper if necessary. I would recommend and we will probably do it again with friends/family!!

Was part of a party who went to this show. I didn't read anything about it in advance. I want to…read morestart by saying I think the actors in the show were enthusiastic. That being said, a lot of how the event ran seemed confusing and poorly thought out. Do not read on if you don't want spoilers. ** spoilers ** This is a dinner theater mystery show. I had never been to one, and assumed we would be watching costumed performers while eating and enjoying drinks. This was very different. Actors were not costumed, and as attendees, people were forced to participate in the show and also interact with other guests, which I personally did not like at all, especially without prior warning. After checking in at a table set up in a lobby area, we were seated at a table at a long somewhat narrow conference room with nothing except hotel banquet tables - no decorations or signage. The MC came in and, yelling loudly, went over some information on how the show would work, which I found not quite clear. There was no mention of how the room would work - where were restrooms, when could we stand, when could we leave the room, if/when we could leave the room to get more drinks (there was no individual service at the table, only people dropping off the food that is part of the package), how the timing of the food service would interact with the show, etc. A double sided sheet with a mini-golf style pencil is supplied for one to take notes - but it's almost impossible to write on paper on top of a tablecloth with the pencil. And they almost immediately tell you to stand up and 'interrogate' other people. If I realized there were actors in the audience, it might have made more sense. They gave perhaps 10 minutes to talk to other guests, and given the lack of space in the room and the timing, it was enough to talk to maybe 4-5 people, but there were 50-60 guests, so there is no way you could realistically count on matching up with the actors. Also, you don't know what info you are really looking for, so you waste most of the space with useless notes, not realizing that later the MCs would provide several sets of clues which are really what you need paper to take notes on. Clipboards would have made writing notes sooo much easier. As well as more note space, instead of wasting paper with survey questions. I found the rest of the show very confusing and poorly staged, especially in not being coordinated with the food service, or even having intermissions where people could run out to the bar (a table in the lobby area set up next to the registration table). I did not really appreciate some of the yelling that took place by the actors. And too many things did not make sense (why did we have to write fake persona names on our name tags instead of first name/last initail?) I really disliked this show and had I not been with other friends, would possibly have walked out. BTW when you read reviews, please know they bribe guests with a shot glass if they leave a good review and show it to the hosts before you leave.
