I hate to give low ratings after 1 visit but, we waited 3 hours for food & never received it! My party of 4 arrived around 6:30p (with reservations) on Memorial Day. We were seated within 5mins. There was no doubt about them being busy. They had a live band playing on the gazebo, playing soulful late 80's-early 90s music. Just about every table was full on all levels. The waitress came over immediately, took our drink orders. At the same time, we also gave our food orders, that included apps & entrées...we were hungry. We asked for: 2 raw shrimps (not my order), 2 RI clam chowders, clam bake, lobster roll, & shrimp tacos. Drinks came out in no time, & they were great, appearance & taste wise. About 10mins after that, the 2 shrimps come out. Obviously, those were gone in 2 seconds. So we chatted amongst ourselves, enjoyed the music & the gorgeous scenery. A little over an hour passes by & we flag down our waitress to inquire. She apologizes & states they're really busy & she knew it was gonna be bad with all the reservations they had, in addition to the walk-ins. Then goes about attending to other tables. So we continue waiting, chatting, ordered some shots. Around 8p we ask the waitress for some bread or some crackers. She brings out 4 little packets of oyster crackers. I never enjoyed these things so much in my life. But the feeling soon passes, because hanger is kicking in. 8:30p comes & I ask specifically about the chowder. 2hrs for someone to scoop soup into a bowl is ridiculous. Again she apologizes & says they go by checks not by courses. Our check hasn't come up yet. But should be next since the people behind us are done. I'll look at it & soon as it's ready, I'll bring it out...so basically she just stated the process & not that she was going to have it addressed. I get there's other people but it's soup lol. Anyway, we wait, another waitress comes over saying, our card didn't go through...our hanger is maximizing. Needless to say, it was the people sitting behind us. 8:50p still no food, & I'm sorry but 2 of us leave & 2 stay behind to pay for the drinks. 9:15p I get a call from my friends, they are still there trying to get the waitress to get the check & still no food. I'm on the fence of coming back here. Maybe on a regular night, but I won't go out of my way to make the 1hr drive again. Suggestions: don't take any more reservations if you can't handle the volume. While also enforcing a spending minimum to make up for any lost business. Or, at least inform your patrons of the wait for food. read more

This is the first time I've gone to Amarante's. We had two tables overlooking the water on the deck. Beautiful view. I loved the trees lined along the waters edge. Our server was Jess. She was great. We were a large group and she handled everything beautifully. Everyone was happy with their food: lobster rolls, fried shrimp, chicken Ceasars salads, burgers etc. Dessert was key lime pie... yum. There was a trio playing soft music and the volume was perfect. I really enjoyed our time there. read more

I ventured out with my friends for my first visit to a restaurant since the COVID-19 crisis began. I wanted to sit outdoors with a view and Amarante's Sea Cliff Inn was the perfect spot. We opted for the inn side rather than the deck side, because the inn side has more entree options. We each opted for our own appetizers. Caprese salad, clam chowder and shrimp cocktail were ordered. Everyone enjoyed their appetizers very much. I had the clam chowder. It was rich, creamy and delicious. The clams were very tender and the chowder was loaded with clams and potatoes. For entrees, most of us opted for the hot lobster roll. It was overflowing with lobster and was accompanied by drawn butter, crisp fresh fries and a very tasty coleslaw. One of my friend opted for the sea bass. The presentation was beautiful and she said it was fresh, light and delicious. All of our cocktails were excellent too. I also must be sure to give credit to the wait staff. They were very attentive and I felt comfortable the entire time, as they were following all the guidance provided by the state. It was nice to relax and reconnect, in person, with my friends while enjoying a beautiful sunset. Such a gorgeous view from the deck! Thank you, Amarante's. What a beautiful spot by the sea to enjoy a meal outside & a drink with friends (or I could see it being super romantic too for a couple). The views especially at sunset are spectacular, the ocean breeze is just right. My chilled shrimp cocktail was crisp and fresh with a cocktail sauce with just the right amount of horseradish kick. My lemon drop martini was shaken to perfection. The lobster roll was filled with fresh lobster meat and it was everything. I would return in a heartbeat, our service was good, reservations are a must. The only addition I'd suggest is tiki torches for some bug control at dusk. The waiter was super accommodating in trying to position the umbrella so we had minimal sun glare before it went down. read more

Not well known, but a great place to watch the New Haven fireworks. Amarante's has a large outdoor seating space and more space on the lawn. They have live music once per week in the summer and easy parking. My mom loved her fried shrimp and the lobster roll was good. read more

I attended a group function at Amarante's last night. It was my first trip here, and I walked away very impressed. The location is stunning! Literally on a sea cliff, the back deck offers a gorgeous view of Long Island Sound. I hope you're there to see the sunset, like we were, it's really breathtaking. Our banquet room was beautiful. There was a full width window at the front of the room overlooking the water. The décor was very pretty, with white table cloths, chair covers and flower centerpieces. The service was top notch -every bartender and server we dealt with was professional and courteous. AND THE FOOD WAS GREAT! Happy Hour on the deck had three pastas (Alfredo, a vegetarian Marina, and a Bolognese), plus a lot of passed hors d'oeuvres. The buffet dinner had a lot of choices - salad, noodles in a peanut sauce, ziti, potatoes, sautéed vegetables, chicken marsala, and a roast beef carving station. The clear winner was the chicken marsala. No dried out overcooked wedding food here. The chicken was super moist and delicious with a wonderful mushroom sauce. Mini pastries were served tableside to complete the meal. Two of my friends were married here years ago, and they both had wonderful experiences. My former fiance just became my current husband and we had our wedding reception at Amarante's last Saturday. They were extremely attentive. Dominic helped us plan the event leading up to the day of, and our maitre dees José and Darlene did an amazing job tending to us the day of; making sure we were taken care of, making sure everything went smoothly throughout the night, and keeping our guests happy. We received a lot of compliments on how great the food was and how beautiful the event space looked. I could not be happier with how Amarante's treated us and I would highly recommend them to anyone. I went to a Ladies' Night event, and I have to say, I had a wonderful time. The weather did not cooperate, but Amarante's let the crowd into their ballroom to keep the party going. - Nice! I ordered my Thanksgiving dinner from here this year and was very disappointed! It was supposed to be for 10-12 people and there was just enough for 8 and I mean small portions. The stuffing was clearly from a bag and was all crumbs - Like it was never moistened which had to be thrown away. The vegetables were not precooked and were hard. The mashed potatoes tasted like they were boxed and the sweet potatoes casserole had nuts in it which was not mentioned and two of my guests had reactions! They also gave me 8 mini cannoli's which I will say was an extra and thoughtful though why 8 when the meal was for 10-12??? I have been catering this meal for years some not so great but all doable. I have never given anyone a bad review but this was the worst! I will say that the one positive was that they did give me a full pan of baked ziti that was decent and thankfully so because that was what the guests had to eat. I called to let them know how unsatisfied I was and the manager asked if he could call me back and I never heard from him again??? I wasn't expecting a refund or any compensation but a phone call back would have been the decent thing to do. Never again! Think twice if using them for next years thanksgiving!!! read more

I recently attended a wedding at Amarante's Sea Cliff. The views are breathtaking and you almost forget you're in New Haven. +3 stars The parking lot was an absolute nightmare. The spots are so close together you may end up leaving with a few more dings and dents in your car than when you parked. Upon entering the ballroom I asked where the maitre d' was and no on had any clue. I'm a nursing mother and I make that known. I had called earlier and no one answered so I couldn't ask my question previously. I explained that I would need to leave halfway through the event to a room with an outlet. The maitre d' said she would check the bathroom to which I said absolutely not. I didn't end up pumping at this event because I felt like a bother. -1 star The waitstaff was awful. They had no idea what was in the food they were serving which was very concerning for those with food allergies. I asked one waitress what kind of sauce was on the chicken satay sticks and she looked at me and just said chicken. When I repeated my question she said I don't know. I'm sorry but that's an unacceptable answer when you are feeding someone food who may be potentially allergic to something. Luckily I don't have any allergies; I just like to know what I'm eating prior to eating it. -2 stars For our entrees, my husband got the prime rib and I had the salmon en crute. Mine was delicious: the salmon was not fishy, the pastry crust was fluffy and decadent. My husband had the prime rib and it was the worst prime rib I have ever had. My mother in law bought the Thanksgiving meal. We ended up with an uncooked half a turkey . I ended up cooking it for 2 and a half hours. There were also not enough mashed potatoes or stuffing for 6 people. We ended up cooking stuffing and mashed potatoes at the last minute. I called and was met with rudeness from the chef and never heard back from anyone in charge. This meal was more work than the $120 paid to save time. read more

Been here twice now for special occasions. First time was my retirement party and lastly for an engagement party. The venue is lovely... waterfront, great view and sunset. The food is slop. Both times. Horrible food. They put out a pasta in "Bolognese" sauce which was nothing more than a couple sauteed hamburgers chopped up thrown in a vat of Ragu with watery pasta. The parm for the pasta and salad was that cheap stuff from a jar and the passed appetizers were unappetizing. For such a nice piece of real estate, such a disappointment. I attended a sunset wedding here and the layout of this place was perfect. When driving by, it blends in with the rest of the quiet neighborhood and doesn't scream "restaurant". The back deck/patio area overlooking the water and grounds was the perfect setup for cocktails after the ceremony. The staff was very friendly and the food was really good, except for the steak. I didn't care for it as much as I did the rest of the options. Though it could have just been me, others at our table seemed pleased. This place is a great venue for any sort of small to medium celebration with friends and family. Had the pleasure of attending their new restaurant opening tonight. A newly designed menu and dining space. As usual the atmosphere is excellent, the view is spectacular and the staff very attentive and friendly. This place is especially appealing in the warmer months. It is located right on the water and the view is quite nice. While it is normally a facility that is rented out for specific events, they are open to the public, Monday - Wednesday, from May - October. They offer live music and it is a fun and relaxing way to spend an evening. They host other public events too. Definitely get there early if you are attending one of these. The parking lot fills up very quickly and tables are hard to come by, especially if it's a night that the "regulars" have reserved most of them. I have actually brought a folding chair a few times and camped out on the grass, due to the limited seating available. They will allow you to do this. The food is good and the portions are HUGE. I ordered a lobster roll, without the bread, and had 3 full meals from it. $22 seems a bit expensive, until you divide it by 3, at which point it becomes very reasonable. :) My friends also ended up taking their meals home because they were unable to finish them. One ordered chicken tenders and cole slaw and the other ordered crab cakes, served on a green salad. Both said their meals were delicious, as was mine. Definitely a place to check out if you want to unwind with good food, good music, and good people. read more

My fiance and my two best friends and I toured here when we were looking for a waterfront venue for our May wedding. I had emailed with Peter before we went, and he sent me sample menus with pricing, and we scheduled a tour. The pictures on their website and their menus were amazing. We had high hopes. The first thing we noticed when we arrived was the small and full parking lot. This is advertised as a handicapped accessible venue (my fiance is in a wheelchair) and not only could we not find a handicapped space, but the only space we could find was way out on the edge of the property. We got up on the porch (not accessible unless someone can help push the chair) and went inside, only to find an event going on. We were quickly ushered back outside and someone went to get Peter. After several minutes, Peter showed up and took us out back to the waterfront. When we asked about going inside, he said they had a event and we couldn't see either building. So what was the point of scheduling a tour? The grounds were beautiful. Imagining the sun setting over the water in May was a beautiful mental picture for our wedding. However, the grounds weren't accessible either. The only way to get down to the waterfront was down a very steep paved driveway that my fiance needed help on. And going back up the driveway was impossible without two people pushing (he only weighs 150lbs and I push him and carry him all the time - it was not his weight that was so tough). We all sat on the deck and discussed our options and asked Peter some questions. He immediately made us feel as though we were not important to him, and it didn't matter if we didn't book with him because he knew other couples would come along. For example, when he asked us how we met, we said online, and before we could elaborate he said, "oh, I've heard better stories." We felt like, we know you have, but this is our story, and it's important to us. When we got to pricing, he looked at the menus I had printed out from HIS email, told me that they were all wrong and he had no idea how I'd gotten them, and gave us new ones that were far out of our budget. We also asked about getting dressed at the venue. He said that only the bride could dress there. The groom, groomsmen, and bridesmaids all had to get ready elsewhere. When we asked about their centerpieces (flowers in vases) and whether we could lean a small photo up on each piece, he said we could either use theirs or ours, but no mixing. Overall, we were so unhappy with this venue, mostly because of Peter and his policies. There was another reviewer on here who mentioned feeling like this place was just a wedding factory, and that's exactly how we felt. The grounds are very beautiful, but I can't even comment on the insides because we weren't allowed in. Everything about Peter was unhelpful, and quite the opposite of where we ended up booking (for a better price and more flexibility - Merlot on the Water). Everything about the venue we chose is what we wanted, and the owner (Victoria) couldn't be more willing to move things around and let us make our day OUR DAY. We made up our own menu, we're moving furniture around to make room for a photo booth, we can use a mix of her centerpieces and ours, and she has let us tour three times with no problems. I wish I could recommend Amarante's because of its setting, but the bottom line is I can't in good conscience wish this place on a couple looking for their own beautiful day. read more

I can't say enough about this amazing place. I had my daughter's baby shower there yesterday. Everything was perfect. The staff was amazing, Darlene is the best, she made sure everything went off without a glitch. The food was delicious. Beverages were refilled before I could even request. Guests have been calling me since last night commenting on how fantastic everything was. Not to mention the most beautiful view of the water. The event planner Dawn was the sweetest, kindest, most patient young woman I have ever met. I emailed her probably weekly for months, and she was always so sweet.... I came here for a wedding some time recently and I had a great time! Definitely one of the best weddings I've been to lately, and in good part because of the venue. Location: the location was beautiful as it had a great view of the Long Island Sound. The parking looks like it could be scarce, as if the capacity of the lot is a limit of about 200 people. Don't quote me on that though! Cocktail hour: cocktail hour was okay on this day. The selection of hors d'oeuvres was okay - the best they had were the shrimp spring rolls and the pasta. I personally enjoyed the bolognese pasta. They had other items like various pieces of bread, alfredo pasta and penne a la vodka. The highlight of this cocktail hour was that it was outdoors overlooking the Long Island Sound. It is great in theory but since this day happened to be a pretty humid day, it wasn't pulled off 100%. Any party that is done outdoors month in advance is always subjected to mother nature's unforgiving behaviors. Reception: For the most part, the reception was very enjoyable! Here are some pros and a couple of cons - Pro: Perfect view of the Long Island Sound - they had floor to ceiling, wall to wall windows with a view of the other side of the sound! Also has a large balcony to look out into the water. Pro: The food! It was yummy and the cake they had was very good. I'm not sure if the venue catered the wedding cake but I figured I would mention it here. Pro: The dance floor. Large dance floor meant to fit about 150 if I had to guess. Pro: The ambiance - the place looks like it was a restaurant or some kind of a warehouse converted into a banquet room but you would have to look at the ceiling to know for sure. The rest of the room looked great and I would estimate that it would be a good space for about 120-150 people. The property looked like they had another room but it was not accessible to us on this day. Pro: This was actually a HUGE pro; the bartender lady was magnificent. I asked her to get me some fruity drink and she gave me The Rum Punch and my fiancee loved it! I asked for Coke & Rum and she said which rum would you like? Captain or Bacardi? It's such a fundamental question that no one ever asks - they just give you what they see fit! Even when I got the Shirley Temple she had a question regarding that...I think it was 7-UP or Sprite or something. Amazing! Con: I wouldn't say it was really a con, as no one can control nature. But as a tip, but make sure you read that almanac for the weather on your special event so that you can help bring down the chances of flies on some of the hors d'oeuvres outside during cocktail hour, while maximizing your chances on the utilization of their balcony. Con: Seemingly lacked air conditioning inside the place at first. After a while I think I stopped sweating but I would turn on the air from at least the start of cocktail hour so that people can be greeted to a nice, cooled banquet room. Anyway, 4 stars on the place for its ambiance, sound-side view, spaciousness, food and the idea and potential of having an indoor/outdoor event. I would recommend this place to a party getting married in about the fall or the spring looking to invite 100-120 guests. read more

If the Godfather lived in New Haven and wanted to give away his daughter in marriage, he'd probably choose St. Michaels for the church and Amarante's for the wedding reception. This place overlooks the water and has been a long time favorite among elm city residents, but especially among the city's paesans. It's conveniently located just 5 minutes away from downtown New Haven. No, it's not super elegant. Yes, there are are plastic chairs on the deck. But the grounds are beautiful and the food is terrific. I've never been here for a wedding but I have been here for several social occasions. Often in the summer time they have specially themed events that anybody can attend. Fortunately you don't have to be a wiseguy or kiss a godfather's ring to sit on the deck. You can just sit carefree on the deck and watch a beautiful sunset. The sunsets are particularly nice because the sun goes down over water in the west. It's something you don't often find here on the East Coast because of the way that the shoreline is generally orientated. read more

I have been to a few events at Amarantes. It's usually mediocre at best. CONS The parking lot is on a steep slope, could be difficult for handicapped, or elderly guests. THE FOOD The food is very bleh. The wedding we attended last September and the mashed potato bar was certainly instant- although a cool concept. The drinks at the bar were ok-maybe a bit watered down but the 4 oz glasses have you going back every few minutes to wait yet again in a long line. The spread for cocktail hour had no rhyme or reason to it. Nothing looked incredible appetizing and it just appeared to be a mish mosh or what was in the pantry. If this wasn't the case, I would suggest a more cohesive and appetizing menu. The meal itself was served after 10pm- I was a bit flavorless (prime rib) cooked to temp-ok for a banquet facility. THE STAFF The man who served us dinner was very nice and accommodating. There was just very little to no dressing on the salad and we didn't have enough bread for the table, it would've been nice if these issues were avoided by placing the appropriate amount of food on the tables- This may sound stupid (bread, butter, salad dressing), but when you have to wait to eat b/c your waiting for someone to bring you something..it gets annoying ESPECIALLY if the food is STARTING to come out at 10pm. There was a female waitress during cocktail hour that really pissed me off- she was rude, didn't understand or speak English (wasn't able to tell us what she was serving) and I was floored when she told a guest to "JUST EAT IT" -very rude, bottom of the barrel kind of help. THE ATMOSPHERE INCREDIBLY OUTDATED. Our friends got married outside at the gazebo. Although the grounds were kept and the view of the ocean was beautiful, the gazebo itself was lined in that xmas trim lighting that is encased in the clear (now yellow) tubing and half of it was either falling down, or not working. Even if it were neatly decorated an completely working, it was still very tacky and very 80'S. The interior of the 'ballroom" was blah, plain, less than desirable. There are no selling points, nohwere to take nice pictures. The light fixtures were in places upside down (candelabras fixed on the wall). The wallpaper is peeling and get this- there is shag carpeting on the ceilings. Like why? Why is there shag carpeting on the friggen ceiling. Is it to help the acoustics? who knows but GET RID OF IT. In terms of the comfort of the atmosphere and acoustics- The dance floor is small, the music blasts, and it is just way too hot on the dance floor with maybe 30 ppl. The only "PRO" I can think of is the fact that it MAY be incredibly priced. This I don't even know for sure but being in the industry and having venue shopped several times, I wouldn't pick this place for anything especially a wedding and if I did, I wouldn't pay more than $35/$40 a plate. I'm sure it's not that cheap but with the competition down the st... step up your game or close. I'm not sure how this place stays in business. read more
