The Lab is truly my favorite spot since moving to New Haven half a year ago, and I only go to one…read moredance class there per week. The owner, Gerald Lovelace, is, for real, a renaissance man who runs the studio, teaches, and is a tech wiz with all sorts of video and light production. (His photo studio, Lovelace Studios, is a testament to many of his skills outside of dance, check that out, too.) Classes are affordable, insanely fun, incredibly accessible and welcoming (I had danced a lot growing up but never in the style I take at The Lab), and the folks at The Lab are just the nicest, ever. Beginner classes are indeed beginner-friendly, but they're *not* boring!! They also film at the end of every class, which helps me learn where I can improve AND document an incredibly fantastic experience. Filming is optional but I recommend it! I'm just repeating myself but I can not recommend this studio enough. Check out their YouTube page or Instagram if you want to get a good sense of the choreographers/teachers and the styles you'll find here. I could spend a year going on and on about the experience dancing at the Lab. It's an oasis in a desert (where are the other dance studios!? But now I don't even need 'em lol, nothing would beat this spot). Logistical Bits: If you're coming to visit, parking is in the back of the building (I don't do what my phone says and I just turn in from E Main St to High Street, before you hit the Dunkin' Donuts), and the door is a little bit nondescript (imho) so be confident as you walk in, you're in the right place. ;) TLDR The *best* spot, the best people, truly a space buzzing with creative energy - at least every single second I've spent there. Can't wait to keep going!!

The two decided to open their own pinball arcade when they realized that there was barely anywhere to play pinball in Connecticut. Swain and Boschert's goal wasn't just to open a place for recreational pinball gameplay, but also competitive pinball gameplay. Located on the second floor of an old factory building, The Sanctum is run in collaboration with the International Flipper Pinball Association. The name of the arcade is a reference to "entering the Sanctum", a feature on "The Shadow": a pinball machine adaptation of the 1994 film of the same name. The Sanctum is open every Monday night from 7PM to Midnight. It frequently hosts local leagues like the Connecticut, Rhode Island Pinball League (or "CRAP") who train to compete in regional and divisional pinball tournaments. However, customers don't need to be competitive players to gain entry. The Sanctum is open to all players (whether competitive or recreational) regardless of their age or gender. A $20 donation grants guests unlimited freeplay for the entire evening. Although food and beverages aren't served, guests may bring their own. I recently visited The Sanctum during one of their Monday night open houses. From the exterior of the old factory building, it's not obvious at all that there's a pinball arcade inside. After walking up the stairwell, and down a long winding hallway, I finally made my way to the entrance. I arrived shortly after they opened for the evening, and I felt like I was entering some sort of secret pinball speakeasy. I paid the $20 donation fee and began to explore The Sanctum's 50 machines. I was told that the machines get rotated out regularly. There was a good balance of new machines as well as classic ones. A lot of people were there to train for tournaments, but I was only interested in some old fashioned pinball fun. I had a blast! I ended up staying for almost the entire night and I probably tried just about every machine there. Some of my favorites included "Rush", "Alien", "Pulp Fiction", "The Shadow", "King Kong: Myth of Terror Island", "Godzilla" and "Evil Dead". This place is a pinball paradise and I can't wait to return! If you're a serious fan of pinball, then you need to go to the Sanctum! They've also got pinball leagues which are.... needless today, out of my league. "Hidden gem" is a completely overused term but so appropriate for a wonderful spot like this.
