I hate giving low reviews on yelp however today it is deserved. Came for breakfast after not being able to find anywhere to go. Waited a decent time for our drinks. The OJ is overly pulpy. The menu says fresh squeezed but it taste like Floridas Natural out of a container. The biscuits and gravy was okay. The home fries were pretty bland. My other half got an egg sandwich that he says wasn't good either. We also came pretty out of our way to come here which makes it even more disappointing. read more

I stopped by over the weekend during the insanity that takes place every spring in DC during the cherry blossom season. A friend was visiting from out of town and I suggested we go to The Diner. I'm glad we did! I opted to go with the Rueben with a side of sweet potato fries. Waitress recommended that I go with it and she was right. My friend went with the fried chicken, and she cleaned off her plate. It was understandably busy with everything that was going on during the weekend and the host seated us within ten minutes of arriving. Came here after a late night around DC on a Saturday. Thankfully when we came, there was only two of us so we were able to easily get bar seating immediately. Since it was a Saturday night, they were quite busy with many intoxicated and hungry people - so there's definitely a high level of understanding. We came here because we needed greasy food and someplace that was open 24 hours to accommodate the time frame we were in. I think that by being at the bar seating, it worked in our favor in receiving faster service since they didn't want to see two sad girls waiting for food. The server was attentive for the most part, juggling multiple parties and orders from tables/booths. We each had a burger and fries, the burger was a little too well done - but it got the job done. I think coming back earlier in the day would make the experience a little nicer. I don't think you can expect too much from a 24-hour diner. So. Good. I came in with a couple friends late at night (after midnight) after hitting up a couple bars. I ordered mozzarella sticks and the reuben with a side of mac and cheese. Our food came out a lot faster than I was expecting, all piping hot and looking fabulous. The mozzarella sticks were the best I've had in recent memory: fried to the perfect level of crunchiness on the outside, stretchy and flavorful on the inside. The reuben was also phenomenal. In my experience it's hard to get a reuben wrong but this place does it so very right. The mac and cheese didn't blow me away but that's not because there was anything wrong with it. I just prefer the fancy stuff with breadcrumbs and/or bacon on top. The service and the quality of the food are especially impressive considering the time of night. The graveyard shift is rough but these guys killed it. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for the classic diner experience of expertly-prepared comfort food in a friendly, relaxed environment. read more

We found this place on Yelp and had a terrific experience for breakfast. The staff was attentive and super friendly. Highlights included shrimp and cheese grits with sunny side eggs, delicious pancakes. ..we tried plain, chocolate chip and the banana nut. The hot chocolate was fantastic, served in a fancy glass with plenty of whipped cream. The environment is eclectic and mirrors the neighborhood it's set in. A great spot for breakfast but I bet their other options are good to. When in town again we will be back! read more

We were so lucky to stumble upon The Diner as this is one of the coolest diners I have ever been to! We needed to grab a bite to eat after an event we worked and since it was midnight, none of the kitchens were open. Thank goodness for The Diner that is open 24 hours! We were seated immediately and served our drinks. Water, but fun to know alcoholic drinks were also available! We looked over the menu which had basic diner food and ordered. We waited a bit for our food, but it was pretty busy. We had enough to keep us busy with the people watching of the bars outside and the awesome music playing inside! It brought a fun, bar ambiance to a diner atmosphere. We received our food and were pleasantly surprised! I got a BLT and cheese fries and the dish was good! The prices weren't too bad either. This is somewhere we would definitely visit again when in town! Definitely recommended for good eats after the bars close! read more

Very happy with my experience at The Diner. It's a great place to go when traveling alone, as you can have a seat at the bar, watch some TV, and have a solid and delicious meal of chicken & waffles. Just what was needed after an evening out with a rowdy group of friends. The service was speedy and pleasant. While not as gruff as Mel's Diner (a dated reference hipsters will struggle with), the staff here knows how to balance the varied needs of different late-night demographics in a smooth and process manner. The kind of place where regulars and tourists can mingle and enjoy the vibe. Our night was no exception. The portions were plentiful and the taste better than what I am used to from all-night greasy spoons. Had I been fortunate enough to have stumbled upon this place sooner during my stay, I would've undoubtedly been a customer for a more traditional breakfast at least a couple more times. But I'll be back again soon enough and I'll be sure to stop by The Diner once more! read more

What you have to keep in mind... is that the diner is 24/7. And that's what makes it awesome. Yeah you can get your jumbo pizza slice or your falafel or empanadas late at night. But there really aren't a lot of sit down 24/7 joints in DC! SO... my recommendation.. go after a late night.. the food tastes much better than if you were to go during the day. Standard dining food... which brings you much more happiness when you are dehyrated and sweating alcohol at 2AM rather than looking for a nice lunch spot on the weekend. I ordered Eggs Benedict, the English Muffin wasn't even toasted, the Ham was a cold piece of Lunchmeat Ham folded over the muffin, the Hollandaise Sauce was sour tasting and the Eggs were not tasty at all, thank goodness their were some homefries on the plate so I had a little something to eat, however they were cold... all in all a very nasty plate of expensive food! My husbands Cornbeef Hash had a miniscule amount of Cornbeef, the eggs were overcooked and he received one piece of very cold barely toasted toast... another disappointing expensive plate. The food was pretty basic, not very good. One friend felt nauseous after eating the shrimp, and had to go to the restroom. Additionally, they were very sneaky with their bill. After my party of 11 left, we realized that they slipped in extra tip fees on top of gratuity. Our total tip ended up being nearly 50%. Please check your receipts when they charge you. Came for an early morning breakfast on a weekend; we were able to sit outside because the weather was nice(ish). The patio space is nice, but it's a little tight moving between tables. The food was fine, but nothing to write home about. I had the western omelette. It was ok, but it was weirdly greasy and had a lot of onions in it. The grits were really good though. My friend got the chicken biscuit and was disappointed in it. She said the biscuit was really dry and the chicken was just ok. The grits were the best part of her meal too. This used to be my favorite breakfast place. In fact, it had been my favorite for a few years up until a few days ago. My husband, son, and I went as a spur of the moment thing and I was really left disappointed and borderline grossed out. The dining area seemed dirty and the bathroom was even dirtier. I still like the taste of the food but a dirty space makes me lose my appetite. If I return, it will probably only be for an Irish coffee. I just want to start by saying that I've always had a good experience with the Diner up until two Saturday nights ago. I will not be back. Everything was decent, the food is always good late at night, however when it came time when everyone was ready to pay, our server disappeared for about twenty minutes, sometimes with other tables that walked in and sometimes out of sight completely. When we finally were able to get his attention, we asked for specific splits for the check. Mind you, there were about six or seven of us so we repeated it to make sure he got it. There was also an automatic gratuity for groups larger than six (or five, I don't remember). The server came back, rang one of our friends for meal she didn't get. This was the same meal of another one of our friends had gotten, and the server said the meal wasn't paid for, but it was, just with the wrong card. So he was scrambling for that. He comes back with my card and says they don't take Discover. I'm confused because they take it everywhere for the most part. So I told him to get the manager. So the manager comes, she's the young Black woman with short bright pink hair (no older than probably 27), and she squats next to me. So I'm explaining that this is the only form of payment that I have right now. She listens but then says, "Oh maybe one of your friends can pay for you then you can cash app them." Then I said, "No, I can't do that because I don't have money on my debit card right now." (I was waiting to get paid which I hadn't at that point so that's why I wanted to use my credit card.) Then she says "Maybe you can go to an ATM." I repeat to her that that's not an option and even if it was the Wells Fargo atm was like a 15 minute walk away. So I'm asking her for us to come to some sort of solution, or a potential tab with a name and number. Then she smirks, and asks can she have my name and number so she can formally ban me from the establishment. Her words, not mine. She said again that because I was not going to pay that she could ban me from here permanently. HOWEVER, there is no sign on the door that says they do not take Discover and I stated that and said that I shouldn't be penalized for their mistake. She comes back with "everyone says that, but it's still wrong. If you don't pay, I can ban you." But then I say, "Well if everyone keeps saying it why don't you fix it and put a sign up to inform your guests?" She says "that's not my problem." We have a back and forth dialogue, no yelling involved between either of us. My friend finally insists to pay kindly, and I accept so we can all FINALLY get out of this place. Maybe this is my ego talking, but I had to inform her that that's not how you do business and that this whole exchange was her fault and that of the establishment. I held her accountable and said she needs to do better, and she keeps this smirk on her face saying "Okay" and "That's what you think." It was an extremely frustrating experience. My last tidbit would be, as a server myself, even I wouldn't have expected a tip for that less-than-standard service, and the fact that it was automatic was completely unfair and at least that should've been covered considering we could barely get our waiter's attention for almost half an hour. The manager didn't even try to acknowledge our frustration with the server or with her and essentially said it was our fault. read more

This is such a cute and classic diner. The service was incredibly fast, the food incredibly good, and their maple syrup is AMAZING. We asked the waiter what it was and he said he thought it was just regular syrup, but there was something really good and unique about it! It almost had a blueberry flavor. Ok so years ago I used to think this place was it, but my most recent visit changed that and prompted this review. Let's start with the positive, the service is great! The staff is always friendly and accommodating. However, the inside of this joint is SO GROSS. Like I couldn't even eat in here, the floor was disgusting and it smelled like straight baño. Really unappealing. I was ready to roll out after that but my girl was famished so she wanted to go ahead and eat. I completely endorse The Diner (and explicitly recommend it above the other links in the Tryst/Open City chain). There's not guaranteed five star service or guaranteed five star food but it's consistently four-star (or 4.5!) level at each and -- for a place I come to every weekend before I've even had coffee -- this is key. I wouldn't come back like clockwork otherwise! And now that I get treated like a local it feels like an extension of home. Tips: don't overdo on coffee, it's pretty intense. Don't come on weekends between about 9:45 and 1pm and expect to get a table right away. If you come earlier (say 7-8am) and sit in the back, you *will* be surrounded by families with small children. Paying an extra few cents for the biscuit is worth it. read more

The Diner is a cute place located in Adam's Morgan near all of the bars. The servers are super friendly, and are patient (as one would expect from being around the late night bar district). They serve primarily breakfast /diner foods, so this would definitely be the place to go if you're hungering for IHOP, but know there's none nearby. I waited for ten minutes on one of the street tables. A couple seated themselves at another table outside with their dog. The server took care of them and their dog bringing them all water and taking their order. A bus person was walking around picking up dishes around me without acknowledging me. Both of them made eye contact with me and did not offer any greeting. Maybe it was because I was dressed in some workout wear but they were extremely dismissive and just an awful experience. read more
