Leaving at 5 am with a cranky toddler, I left a jewel box in the room. It had no monetary value but great sentimental value. A staff member kindly put it in the locked hotel lost and found office. When my local family tried to pick it up a short while later, it was gone. The manager tried his best to recover it by reviewing security camera footage, even going so far as reporting the theft to the local police. He seemed like a professional stand-up person. Nonetheless I wanted to warn potential guests not to come here with any object of value to you because it might be stolen. I will take this review down I'd it is returned. read more

We highly recommend this lovely B&B! The Innkeepers, Tom & Debbie are very gracious and personable hosts and we felt very welcomed. Fresh baked cookies and hot cider awaited us upon our arrival... and the English tea cake was wonderful! The Inn itself as well as the rooms are beautifully appointed and have a charming New England feel. The library is especially welcoming with a woodburning fireplace. Breakfast was fabulous! I don't know how this hotel has so many high ratings . The photos are misleading- it's pretty old and run down :/ it needs about a million dollar renovation . The whole place is outdated and the carpets - oh dear -- it's not modern or anything like the website photos --- it's like staying at your aunts house who hasn't updated their home in 30 years . Had a lovely stay with Tom and Debbie this MDW. Everything was super clean and ready for us upon our arrival! The hosts are beyond friendly and were happy to give us plenty of local tips. The inn has such a vintage feel to it, we really felt at home. Plus, Debbie cooks and bakes for all who stay there, so there was a giant chocolate stout cake and gooey butter bars just waiting to be munched on. The location is ideal; a short walk away from downtown Lenox. We will happily return! read more

We've been here thirty minutes and really are wishing we had booked somewhere else. We've been told breakfast will only be set out pastries and parfaits, the rooms don't feel private as we can hear the conversation going on in the room across the hall, and free WiFi is inaccurate-not available on the third floor where our room is located. I'm using my phone hotspot to write this review. We're super disappointed. UPDATE: We have found an article that this BnB is under new ownership. So don't expect the Tom and Betty home baked goods treatment. Corners were cut and what was offered was minimal or nothing. read more

We cannot say enough wonderful things about our stay. We have been very cautious during Covid, so this was a big risk for us. And boy, are we glad we took it! We felt very safe. All precautions are being taken-from a full 24 hours between you and the room's prior occupant, abundant hand sanitizers and masks, individually wrapped afternoon snacks, and breakfast that is distanced from other guests. And let's talk about that breakfast-incredible!!!! And very accommodating of any dietary needs. Literally better than any restaurant brunch. We stayed in the carriage house, which we liked having our own separate entrance. We were able to bring our dog. We weren't sure what to expect, because often dog friendly rooms are sub par. Well this was not the case! A truly comfortable and beautiful room with private bath. A truly great stay! P.S. the inn is a walk to town! Didn't expect this! Such a great surprise! read more

Reading the reply to my review brought back more memories and made me feel good. I had almost forgotten the fun I had going out on the tranquil, unscreened porch in the evening, in order to get on an open wi-fi network. I was greeted by friendly swarms of mosquitoes. Truly an entomologist's dream! If only I were an entomologist. As for breakfast, my wife and I were asked in advance for likes and dislikes. Didn't get what we disliked (prunes), but didn't get what we liked (bacon, biscuits.) So I guess we were 50% accommodated. The reason it makes me feel good is thinking how generous I was to give that 2d star. read more

My wife and I stayed here last minute for one night last weekend. Very nice, quiet and comfortable room in the carriage house. Easy walking distance to downtown Lenox for all the shops, restaurants, wine bars, and pubs. An added benefit was we happened to arrive in time for the annual Lenox Art walk that began the next morning. We had a very nice breakfast at their sister inn downtown (included). This was a gorgeous B&B right in the heart of historical Lenox. If you're expecting a stay at The W, this ain't it. The Birchwood is much more New England than metropolitan. The rooms are cozy (yes, I mean smallish) but in excellent condition. Our room had a gas fireplace, plus there are several (wood burning) fireplaces in the public areas. Since this winter has been so snowy, this was perfect. If we had been there for more than just an overnight, I would have spent most of our relaxation time in the giant main parlor, where the big fireplace is, and the walls are lined with books. The Inn has two wonderful dogs-in-residence. Quinn and Piper are mellow care-free dogs that just add to the comfortable hominess of the inn. Also, this is a dog-friendly place--just make sure you mention it when making your reservation, as they limit the number of simultaneous dogs. Our pup had a great time at the inn, but especially at Kennedy Park, which is just across the street and a delightful place to walk the dog through the woods off leash, even in the snow...but that's another review. The Birchwood is about 2 blocks away from the "downtown" area, so its easy to walk to any of the restaurants for dinner. Tanglewood isn't far away, and although we didn't try, it looked walkable--especially if it were summer. Breakfast was yummy (although Ken was less enthused by it). There is a 1st edition copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking on the shelf in the butler's pantry. Any friend of Julia's is a friend of mine. read more

Very welcoming . Tom greeted us as we pulled into the parking lot. Showed us around, and guided us to places we should visit during our stay. Very friendly and kind. The house is beautiful, and well set up with antique style furnishings. Very comfy and homey. There is a small area that is laid up with teas and coffees to help yourself too, and the most amazing baked goods. I had a cookie and the best bake well tart ever! Breakfast was amazing. Pumpkin soufflé and a mushroom quiche. So good! A table was set with fruits, yoghurts, and more amazing baked goods. I would come back just for the breakfast. The place has a great front porch with rockers. Across the street is an old church, and town in a 5 minute walk. Great location. Thanks Tom and Debbie! read more

All the good reviews for this in come from when a previous owner had it. We stayed here in June, there was blood on the sheets, there was no breakfast at the end, but at an another in about a mile away, there is no Innkeeper, and you have to wait until someone shows up with a key to check in. I am still trying to negotiate a partial refund for my stay. Go somewhere else! read more

The 1766 Birchwood Inn has all of the comforts of home (including that they're dog friendly) with all of the charms of an elegant bed and breakfast. Roaring wood fires, historic details in each uniquely decorated room, cozy nooks to read and relax, and of course they go all out for breakfast. They are just a few blocks away from the charming downtown Lenox and a quick drive from so much that the Berkshires have to offer. I've now explored Edith Wharton's home The Mount, the Norman Rockwell studio, and The Clark museum from the Birchwood. Kennedy Park is literally across the street if you want to hike or snowshoe. I love the Birchwood and will definitely be back to visit with the inn-owners Tom and Debbie. read more

I've been meaning to leave this review for some time. My husband and I stayed here last Valentine's Day while passing through the area. The hosts, Tom and Debbie, were so accommodating even though we arrived around 11 pm with a 65 lb dog in tow. We travel a lot, and I have to say that they are among my most favorite hosts. We booked the Dewey Room - it was fab as was breakfast the next morning. Tom was even nice enough to give us a tour of the house providing historic info on the rooms and furnishings. We stayed at the Birchwood Inn for a weekend in June and had a really great time. Ellen and her assistant innkeepers were gracious hosts, breakfast was yummy, the room was adorable, and the location couldn't be beat for a visit to the Berkshires and Tanglewood. Regarding the Inn itself, it's tastefully decorated to remind you of older times. Our room had a booklet with a few pages about the history of the room itself, probably slightly embellished (especially the part about the ghost), but fun to read. There's parking in back and a small garden with a hammock. Obviously, this is a B&B and not a modern luxury hotel - if you want a pool, health club, and concierge service, go elsewhere. Ellen asks guests to reserve a specific time slot for breakfast - try to get there early so you can get one of the spots near the window. We thought breakfast was creative and yummy - the breakfast "appetizer" was something she called "fruit benedict" with slices of fruit on yogurt and granola to look like eggs benedict. The main course was some type of souffle with eggs, cheese, and fresh greens. The breakfast is vegetarian-friendly, although this basically means that meat eaters get some type of breakfast meat that she doesn't serve to the vegetarians. There's also a mid-afternoon tea served on the porch which was totally worth it. It was key lime pie the day that we were there. I think the leftovers become a midnight snack left in the kitchen for people when they return from touring for the day. Ellen went out of her way to explain what we could find within walking distance and her recommendations for local places to visit. The assistant innkeepers were also really helpful, giving us a ride back from Tanglewood. (It's about a 30 minute walk, mostly downhill.) I found everybody friendly and helpful without being overbearing. As far as B&Bs go, this is definitely one of my top experiences to date. You'll notice that the most recent reviews for the Birchwood are all excellent. That's probably because it changed owners in June of 2016. We had the pleasure of staying at the Birchwood Inn in Lenox MA this weekend and we found the kind of hospitality is missing from many inns and B&Bs today. Debbie and Tom made us, and our dogs Tilly and Rory, right at home. We forgot to bring a dog bed and they quickly brought one to our room (The Post Room - Carriage House #1) along with a goodie bag for the dogs. Aside from a very comfortable room (the bed was wonderful and the refrigerator was a nice amenity) the breakfasts, perfectly prepared by Brenda, were out of this world. Creme Broule French Toast, Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Grilled Grapefruit with Basil Sugar were just a few of the mouth watering morsels we consumed over two day. The French Toast and Pancakes were honestly the best of their kind we have ever tasted. The library, with a wonderfully big fireplace, is a great place to meet other guests. And a glass of Creme Sherry is always a nice way to end the evening. So, if you find yourself visiting the Berkshires, for a night or a week, check out the Birchwood. Their catch phrase is "Firesides and Fireflies" - they should add, houseflies, moths, and mosquitoes! I really wanted to LOVE this place, but just couldn't. First, I need to disclose that I have worked as an innkeeper before, and I realize that everyone has bad days and bad situations, BUT if you are charging your guests for a certain level of service and hospitality, you have to provide it. If you or your staff are incapable of carrying out your job well because of personal reasons, then you need to make sure you have back-up, or make some other compensation. We were greeted by copious amounts of dog poop in the driveway and path to the front door. There is a predictably very narrow staircase (the building is wonderfully old) - lined with scores of old photos all hung separately - almost impossible to lug a suitcase up without hitting one of them (no one helps with luggage) , and the innkeeper got testy when my elbow knocked one askew (of course, I righted it instantly). We checked into The Wilson - it is one of the inn's smaller rooms (we like cozy rooms). We requested one extra towel, and were told there was only enough for one per guest. The built-in soap dish in the shower was broken and jagged, one of us got a VERY bad cut. When we asked for them to duct tape the edges (the first morning) we were told "Of Course!" but it never appeared. We were then told the tile guy had been summoned for weeks, but the job was too small - really? You know about this safety issue and sell the room anyway without at least covering it? The toilet and mirror were filthy upon checkin and the bathroom light kept falling. The room was infested with moths and mosquitoes, and when we mentioned this we were told the innkeeper "would look into it", but nothing ever happened. Air conditioner was ineffective and exceedingly noisy, but because it was a window unit you could only crack the window from the top so no breeze possible - we actually nought a fan at the local CVS so we could sleep. There were several empty rooms, but we were never offered to change. The dog in the room next door barked all day and all night, and we were told there was nothing that the innkeepers could do about it. But all of this pales next to the SPECTACULARLY Anti-Semitic comment made to us by the assistant inn keeper (according to him, the Berkshires have been ruined by New Yorkers and Jews - do you think he knows the owner of the inn is Jewish? As are many of the guests...). When we checked out, we tipped the housekeeping staff, but he actually demanded a tip (he had only been there for part of the time we were there). He then proceeded to try to write down my credit card number on the back of the receipt, which he said was "policy" without saying why. I explained that the reason the machine only prints out the last four numbers is for security, and since my card had already gone through, there was no need to write it down - he got very verbally abusive. Breakfasts were lovely and very tasty, but you had to make a seating for a certain time either - 8:30 or 9:30 - no leisurely wandering down or lingering over coffee. The plusses are: the property is beautiful, the gardens are lovely, and porch is wonderful. Location is great. Lovely common rooms all the proper fixings of a quaint New England spot - chintz fabrics and china tea cups. Nice little common kitchenette, The owner is lovely, but we dealt mostly with her assistant innkeeper. Breakfast was yummy. All in all, there is a reason that this was the only inn with availability when we called, and although it is pretty, it is not worth the price. read more

My husband and I went to the Berkshires on A foliage trip and stayed at The Birchwood Inn. It was beautiful. I can imagine visiting there in winter with a nice fire in the big fireplace. We ate out both nights, but the home made breakfasts were amazing. The Innkeepers were incredibly accommodating. We will be back soon to do more exploring. read more

Innkeepers Tom & Debbie are very pleasant and hospitable and it is reflected in the spacious and inviting living areas (the main library) and the living room. I recently stayed with friends for a long weekend. Located a few blocks from the Lenox town centre, offering convenient access to cafes, restaurants, and shopping. Short distance (walkable, if you are a little ambitious) to Tanglewood, Shakespeare and Company, etc. and a 45 minute drive to Williamstown/Clark Museum. The Birchwood offers historic charm, gourmet-quality cooked breakfasts, and mod cons like excellent a/c and updated bathrooms. There are so many thoughtful touches that are included: comfortable library and sitting room for relaxing with a book or conversation, a delightful porch, bottled water, homemade cakes and cookies for snacking during the day and evening, a refrigerator for guest use, and hospitality that is warm but never obtrusive. No elevator. Open all year. I read the negative reviews posted by guests of several years ago--those stays were during previous ownership. read more

I had an absolutely perfect weekend with Tom and Debbie at their gorgeous BNB. The breakfast was AMAZING and I am really crazy about food living here in NYC. The service was impeccable and the front library room with the fire and books is so beyond cozy. Its located perfectly right across the street from amazing hiking trails and down the block from all the restaurants and shops. Cant wait to come back. Andy took me here for a surprise Valentine's getaway. I'll go ahead and assume it was what he was looking for. The biggest selling point for me was location, it was walkable to what passes as downtown for Lenox. We stayed in the carriage house, so we had plenty of windows, but a tiny bathroom and relatively small room, definitely not adequate for more than a single night's stay. We loved the ambience of The Birchwood Inn with its large comfortable library and fireplace, the elegant breakfast room, the landscaped grounds, and last but not least, our bedroom, the Red Room. The food was delicious. Brenda is a fantastic cook and the breakfasts were inspired (Cream Brulee French Toast!) as were the homemade sourdough bread, muffins, and cakes. What made our stay truly special was the incredibly warm hospitality - we have never felt so "at home" in a Bed & Breakfast. We are already planning our next visit to the Berkshires and our stay at The Birchwood Inn. read more

We have stayed in the Lenox area in the past and Birchwood is our new favorite. The room that we had is great and very spacious.the location is very walkable the everything in town. The public spaces are very welcoming, especially the library where tea is served daily. The breakfasts are very good and creative. The staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Unlike many other locations in the area, the building and rooms are very well maintained and well heated. Our fireplace wood was restocked each day and we really enjoyed the live fireplace in our room. The rooms can be viewed on their web site. Cellphone coverage was good and the wifi worked well. You don't always get those things in the Lenox area. read more

The inn is beautiful but the innkeeper is anything but lovely. We've stayed more than once (color us masochists) and Ellen's lack of hospitality and at times open hostility has the makings of a Mel Brooks movie. From the moment we arrived we were told how much work she has to do and made sure that we knew she had to go out & buy skim milk just for us! The inn is marketed as a gourmet foodie destination. I was served a bowl of oatmeal (without fruit, brown sugar, steamed milk) Dickens style, and diet yogurts w/ artificial ingredients (versus the ubiquitous and tasty Greek yogurt.) However it's not just the food that is lacking. The inn keeper projects an air of being put out over everything. There are notes around the inn asking people not to move items. The kitchen is open for guests to help themselves to beverages. The afternoon I made myself a cup of tea, Ellen picked up the box I had chosen and remarked that she might not have enough for breakfast now. Thinking something and saying something are not the same thing. She has no interest in her guests but in accolades they may provide. We were told at least three times during each breakfast how hard everything was for her as she waited for us to compliment her efforts. It is a beautiful old inn with a porch to die for, but paying close to $400 a night for hostility is getting old. read more

The Birchwood Inn was everything we could have wanted and more. They changed ownership about a year ago, a major improvement. The rooms are lovely and pristine, common areas are gorgeous, the breakfast is outstanding (nearly everyone asked for recipes), and the owners go out of their way to assist you with anything you need including suggestions for restaurants, sightseeing, etc. They even leave pie and tea for the guests to enjoy in the evenings.
