What can be said about the Dabney that doesn't include the word...perfection? My big sisters and I dined here for my 30th birthday. This is my decade of luxury leisure and the Dabney was a great start to this theme. Located on Blagden Alley, the Dabney has a discreet location. The restaurant is clearly labeled and once you enter, it immediately feels like an exclusive dining club. When I walked in, I could tell that Washington's elite and The Who's who in politics definitely dined here. The chef's area has a beautiful layout and nice lighting. One of the presenters of our meals, offered to take a few photos of me and introduce me to the chef for the evening. We came in on the night they were serving a 6 course menu. The food and the presentation was immaculate. The servers and presenters of the food were not just knowledgeable about how the food was cooked, grown, and transported but they were so spirited. You could tell that they loved giving guests the entire fine dining experience. Each course was delicious. This was my first time having duck and it did not disappoint. Haven't reviewed dabney in a while - it's consistent, I'm never blown away by the meal here but it's good and I like the ambiance and open kitchen. Service can be hit or miss. They're revamping the menu/space soon, so will need to come back in to see what they've done (moving more toward a tasting menu vs prix fixe and raising price). Love the place! Can be confusing to get to for some uber or lyft drivers because it's kind of in an alley but a really cute place and love the ambiance. The Charred eggplant and cornmeal cracker were really good but I also liked the oysters. The zucchini fritters were good but I think a sauce would have been welcomed. I ordered the Maryland Blue Crab soup which was packed with flavor and had plenty of crab. I did try a little of the Scallop and it was just like butter and so beautifully done. For my main, I ordered the Duck and got to try the Rockfish and beef. All of them were just fantastic. We did also order some cornbread for the table and it was good but definitely think it could have used some butter on the side. The sticky toffee pudding is a must have but the Fromage Blanc was a great light ending to dinner. Great experience! read more

The thought and effort that goes into the menu, service, and customer experience is unmatched. There is no need to make any difficult menu decisions here as you are assigned a tasting menu and you can specify any allergy accommodations (which they are very attentive to and mindful of). This place is most simply put...an experience. Before you even make it to your seat, the host takes your coat and introduces you to the chef who personally thanks you for coming out and offers a warm mushroom broth (it was amazing). You have a "main" waiter but this is a full team operation. Each course is described to you by someone new it seemed. Visually, everything was stunning; i can't imagine how difficult it must be to create these presentations. On the taste side, it was a carousel of extremes. The venison was the best bite of my life and the oyster rivaled the worst. I genuinely think I may have got a bad one. Nevertheless, the meal went on. I have to say, they really nailed the dessert items here and I wasn't expecting that. The sorbet and toffee pudding was amazing. Just when you think the meal was over they brought out assorted pastries and sweets. This place really does little courtesies like that nicely. After you pay, they even give you a surprise for breakfast the next day. These are the things that truly make the experience fun and worth while. **If the tasting menu isn't your speed, you can opt for the bar and choose from a list of dishes** With all this said, it was the biggest bill of my life. To be honest I'm in a bit of in a pickle for finances after eating here. I think if someone else paid I'd give it 5 stars. Our anniversary visit in 2023 was so memorable! We can't wait to return for the phenomenal food and experience. We had an OK view of the open kitchen and stove, and it was neat to see the chefs pull the dishes together. We learned about milk washing techniques with a most incredible cocktail. Another amazing dining adventure at The Dabney! Took out of town family to their first Michelin star restaurant and wanted to ensure their experience was top notch. The Dabney as usual did not disappoint. We added all the extras (truffles and primo wine pairing). Omari was (as always) knowledgeable and patient regarding our numerous questions about the wine (which was lovely). Some of the pairings were absolutely seamless... they blended so well with the course you hardly knew where one began and the other ended. That said all of the wines were amazing. An instant favorite!! I did the smaller set menu, and it was a huge portion, which was great because everything was beyond delicious. I sat at the bar and got to chat a lot with the bartender which was fun and interesting and resulted in great recommendations! The main room of the restaurant was gorgeous with brick walls and a big oven, where you could see many of the dishes being prepared. Came here for a double date and loved every course! We sat outside, but it's enclosed so you're protected from the elements and very comfortable. They start you off with some little snacks which were all so good! My favorites were the oysters and tuna. I like the fresh taste of them to start the meal. I then got the scallop crudo and that was so good!! My husband got the pig ears, which I gotta say was pretty good, don't knock it till you try it! Both of us got the lamb. Delicious, but the portion was really small. Mind you, they were very slow between each course. So you're waiting a lot time and finally when you get your meal, it's tiny! Probably my biggest complaint. Anyways, for dessert I got the grilled cornmeal cake and it was really goood! Tasted like a fancy pancake Overall, really good meal! Was NOT a fan of this Michelin-started restaurant and would not return here. This restaurant really focuses on sourcing their ingredients (protein and vegetables) from local farmers in the Mid-Atlantic region, and their tasting menu changes every few months (to include in-season ingredients). The kitchen is an open-concept kitchen and it is cool to see them cooking and grilling behind the counter. Service was attentive and nice (just a bit rushed), as was the sommelier. We participated in the price fixe tasting menu, which included 5 "snacks", 3 "courses", 1 "main" (with 6 components), and 1 "dessert". Overall a very small meal. We paired this with the Classic Wine Pairing. The snacks were rushed out of the kitchen (almost arriving all at once), but the timing of the courses finally slowed down. None of the dishes of the night stood out to me, a few even hurt my stomach. If I had to pick the best ones, I would say the lamb tartare and the Maryland blue crab. The wines were mostly white, and again, nothing special. I would not return here, way overpriced and way undelivered; too many amazing Michelins in the area to settle on a mediocre one. read more

Disappointing although I can't ignore the talent of the Chef and kitchen. For me it was a weak flavor profile. The Pork Prime Rib was kind of bland, but the overall dish was saved by the pork sausage and the kabobs. The scallop crudo hinted of scallop but it was overpowered by a bunch of cucumber shavings. The North Carolina shrimp was excellent with subtle black garlic and feta flavor along with zucchini that enhanced the dish. My favorite was the pork rind with yellowfin tuna sashimi flavored subtly with garlic and coriander. The wine pairing pours were pretty scant for the price. The pairings were well conceived. I want to go back to give it a second try but the expense makes hesitant to do that given other places to sample. read more

10/6/22 Not a place you would visit often, but definitely worth checking out. If you're into fine dining and an experience, then Dabney is the place for you. We had a reservation for our party of two. Located in a cute little alley, near a few other restaurants. They staff are very attentive and know every dish they bring to the table. It actually looks over staffed, but I'm guessing that what it takes to deliver the full experience. From the "snacks" section we had the Apple Stack Cake, Oysters and Cream (Divine Pine Oysters, Madeira, Horseradish), A Dabney Classic (Sweet Potato Chesapeake Catfish) and Kilt Greens (Bitter Greens, Preserved Ramp, Smoked Bacon). All beautifully presented on the same plate. I especially loved the Kilt Greens. The Main included Aged Rohan Duck, which was the best dish. Delicious and beautifully presented. The whole experience is about a bit of everything on to your plate to go along with the super juicy duck meat. Other courses include Maryland Blue Crab (Caviar, Herbs Crimson Apple, chives), Garners Jimmy Red Grits (Ember roasted broccoli, carmen peppers, dandelion jam, fat cat cheese), and Autumn Olive Farm Pork Loin (scallop, watermelon molasses). My favorite from these was the pork loin with scallops. Dessert was Fireside Farms Carmen Peppers (Vanilla Ice Cream, Toasted Meringue, Shiso). I was not a fan of the peppers on the dessert. It took away from what could have been amazing. May a bit more ice cream would have fixed that for me. Dining here is an experience. If you're planning to show up super hungry and expecting to pig out, this may not be the place for that. The experience is slow and delicate. The servers always came in pairs, with one setting the plate down and the other explaining to us what dish they just set down in front of us. They seamlessly accommodated my husband's dietary needs despite the set menu having a ton of pork and shellfish on it. None of the substitutions felt like easy outs to us. I finally made it back to the dabney for the first time since Covid and things seem to have changed a bit.... Don't get me wrong, the food and is delicious and if possible the staff has gotten even better, but woof have the prices changed! They are now doing a $95pp prefixed menu that gets you 3 little tasters to start, a small plate, meat course and dessert. While it was all delicious, I just don't feel like it was worth what we paid... $70 even $80? Maybe. I also noticed in my last review there were a ton of decently priced wines (which is always awesome to find). Unfortunately this time around the least expensive bottle of red was $65. In fact, of their list of maybe 20-25 red wines, only 5 we're under $100 per bottle. Maybe this is just the cost of becoming popular but I'm not going to lie I was a little disappointed. The Dabney was this great DC gem and now I feel like we'll look at other options before returning. Fingers crossed the prefixed menu isn't here to stay. read more

Everything was delicious and the atmosphere is nice as well- cozy and intimate. The staff were all very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. My favorites from the menu that night were the grilled mushrooms, duck confit, and plum pudding. The first bite of the plum pudding BLEW me away! So rich and moist, sweet but not overly so *chefs kiss* I believe the menu options change every day, but it seems that a few of the staple pieces seem to stay in the rotation. The only thing I didn't like was that it took a veeeery long time for each course to come out. The entire dining experience for 4 courses took 2.5-3 hours. Slow service. The food was good, but was really disappointed with the "main course". We ordered the Porgy, it was flavorless and not cooked well. Also, the main course is shared between you and someone else. So in other words, we shared a small fish (didn't even eat it), rice, and a salad that came with the fish. We were very excited about dining at The Dabney with another couple who are also used to dining at high-end, highly rated establishments. The service was attentive when they showed up to serve us each plate and wine pairing, but slow - we were there for over 3 hours for an 8 course meal. The food was "fancy" and well presented but really not spectacular in any way and while the wine pairing went pretty well with the corresponding dish, everything was pretty acidic and did not taste very good on its own, especially after the small portion of each dish was already eaten. I'm came here before the pandemic before their Michelin rating and glad they are still standing. Not only are they standing, the Dabney has reinvented itself with its tasting menu. This time around, their feature of duck was amazing (I distinctly remember their fish servings from the first time I visited). Eating duck that was prepared 4 different ways felt like an adventure. In my opinion, their best was the duck breast with caramelized citrus - simple and delicious. The caviar bite on pecan cookie was intense, flavorful, and memorable with all its multilayered goodness lingering even after it was eaten. The foie gras paired well with onion honey on warm roll, the parsnip was on point. I also got their reserve wine pairing which enhanced the flavors and overall experience. Located in Blagden Alley, The Dabney has a nice, rustic charm with a wonderful rotating 4-course Prix Fixe menu. Each bite was quite an adventure with wonderful service to match! Snacks: Watermelon, whipped buttermilk & lemon; Charred Shishitos; Divine pine Oysters; Catfish Sliders (extra). The snacks started the meal on an excellent foot. My favorites were the watermelon and catfish sliders. Who new watermelon could be so fancy, light and refreshing! Appetizer: Scallop Crudo - can't get any fresher than this! The scallops were lightly salted and paired well with picked cucumbers, giving me a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Entree: Grilled Chesapeake Rockfish - Excellent flavors all throughout the dish. Dessert: White Nectarine Sorbet, Toasted Benne Ice Cream, Williow Cheese - My favorite was the toasted benne ice cream. It brought me back to those hard shell chocolate sauce days! We also ordered the extra cornbread. Unfortunately it didn't come until then end of our entrees, but it was still very moist. Complemented very will with our entree sauces. Every single course tasted so good and in my opinion it is so much better than Alinea. The restaurant has more cozy vibes, the staff was great, and that food, again, AMAZING!!! I love being able to see the open concept kitchen and seeing how everything worked. The drinks were also great too, and if you wanted to go somewhere after Death & Co. is right next door. Curiously, JB's trout was served with a pile of snap peas, whereas I got a single pea and an asparagus spear. We politely presented our feedback to the manager when they inquired about our meal, only for them to suggest we try the bar menu next time as it would be more suited to our taste. I'm not sure our taste is to blame here. -TWP ________________________________ Bring back the old Dabney. It felt like a reach for a second Michelin star, but the emphasis was so obviously in all of the wrong places. Each dish having some intricate flower garnish, but the food and service being off, speak to the complete misplaced emphasis on the revamped Dabney experience. The tasting menu looked promising, but the oyster dish was poorly conceptualized, the squab was under-salted (completely unforgivable), the cocktails were skimpy and devoid of imagination, and the service lacked the warmth that we loved from the old Dabney. The hostess was standoffish when telling us we needed to wait 15 minutes for our table and the staff explaining the food felt like nervous middle schoolers who tried to memorize a script. For me, arguably the most offensive point of the experience was there just wasn't enough food to feel satisfied - a first for me among upper scale tasting menus and something that just can't happen if you're charging $235 for a meal. Taste: 4/5 - Food was great, however some of the accoutrement did not add to the main parts of the course. And a couple dishes we just did not enjoy (the bitterness of the Kilt Greens or the scallop crudo). We were absolutely amazed with how the vegetables were delivered, especially the Hearth Charred Winter vegetables - this dish had our jaws on the floor. Would come back just for this if they kept it on the menu. The Royal Baika Caviar with sweet potato dish also had us in amazement, a great way to start the dinner. Service: 5/5 - quick and attentive, knowledge and friendly Overall: 4/5 - I have read and seen in multiple views that the Rohan duck was the star of the show. However it was just alright for us. And as seen in previous reviews, it seems like we received a fifth of the portion of duck breast that they used to serve. Not sure why the cut it down to two pieces. I heard they also used to serve good bread here, which was not part of our dinner. Again, the hearth vegetables dish stole the spotlight. It befuddles my mind how The Dabney is the #1 restaurant in the DC area according to The Washingtonian. My partner and I dined at the restaurant this evening, and spent nearly $1000 for the meal plus a shared wine pairing. This was a real splurge for us. I'm glad to say that the wine pairing was the highlight. The meal was an absolute lowlight. The main course, duck three ways, was a let down. It's a bit ridiculous that I have only just now gone to The Dabney, but last night I got my life together and my group of friends ordered the take home menu. What's most regrettable is that downtown was closed off almost entirely, so I was super late picking up the meal, which meant we had to reheat things--obviously that has nothing to do with The Dabney; I just wish I had been able to get there sooner. The $45pp take home menu is an absolute steal, with four courses that collectively are VERY substantial. As in, I was uncomfortably full by the end of the meal, even though I ate slowly throughout the night (not complaining). You will definitely not finish and be hungry, even a little bit! The menu is prix-fixe with four selections each for the app and entrée, which was great. Everyone can find something they're excited about! Here's the course by course write up: -SNACK: Sweet potato roll with buttermilk fried chicken. Not only was this sweet potato roll delectable, but it was also a great and uncomplicated starter to the meal. -FIRST COURSE: I chose the build your own tomato toast and was thrilled with it. Actually, this dish was the star out of everything for me. The hefty but still soft grilled bread was a perfect support for the rainbow of tomatoes. The bacon mayo was also a nice complement. While I don't eat pork, the mayo itself did not have a noticeable bacon flavor, which was great for me. But the DRESSING! The garlic herb dressing was like a vinaigrette with just a little kick of spice and heat and...it was brilliant. I wish I knew what the recipe was for it because I would absolutely use it on salads at home. -Pressed Lamb: I feel like this dish didn't get to shine the way I know it would have if we had been dining in, but those are the breaks during the pandemic. In any case, the lamb was super tender and was accompanied by a nice fattoush--a Levantine salad with bread, which was a new dish for me. -Peanut Butter Budino: Similar to a crème caramel, it boasted a coating of raspberry jam and a few well-placed raspberries. There were candied peanuts, which added an interesting and unexpected textural element. We had a fantastic dining experience, even at home, and I'm looking forward to when indoor dining is back to being all the way safe again so I can come in person. read more

My wife and I had dinner here on Saturday night at 730pm to celebrate an early birthday. We arrived a few minutes early and only waited a couple minutes before we were seated. We were seated next to the kitchen which was excellent because we could see Chef Jeremiah Langhorne working throughout the evening which was pretty cool to watch. For dinner, the prix fixe was $110/person which I feel is pretty modest given the level of quality and experience that you're provided (and especially with things like MiniBar and P&P charging $300+/person). The cocktails were top notch. I had the Man on Wire and the red wine floater was a nice touch. I liked it better than the Manhattan I had. The food was incredible. The swordfish and the duck are a clear choice (although I'd imagine the other items are great too). There wasn't a single thing that I didnt like and my wife enjoyed every thing we ate too. In all, this was an amazing dining experience and I would love to come back, even just to sit in the bar and enjoy cocktails. read more

All the foods were packed nicely and there were an instruction how to heat up each meals. We enjoyed cauliflower soup as an appetizer. The texture was nice and seasoning was perfect. We were a little bit disappointed at Trout and Chicken dumpling. Trout was kinda dry and the flavor was lacking. The chicken dumpling was the worst. It was a completely different from Chinese dumpling. The broth was tasteless and dumpling skin was kinda Gnocchi. It was horrible. The short rib was the best one and the sauce was nicely cooked. The food is pretty mid. Wouldn't recommend to someone looking to come here for a good Michelin experience

Rustic. Charming. Delicious. A girlfriend snagged a late reservation for a bday dinner and as late as it was... it was one of the most enjoyable meals any of us have enjoyed. Let alone it being during quarantine. We were greeted by very kind hosts, who also helped to make the bday celebration a surprise. Our waiter was extremely friendly and warm and surprised us with free champagne! Food was extremely delicious. The snacks each complimented each other. I got the crab, which was luscious and well cooked. Decided to go with the chicken soup on a cold night and oh my gosh... It was the best chicken soup I have ever had. It was so vibrant with the greens and incredibly earthy, tied together with the warm broth. Dessert was also soooooo good! Gotta give this place a try.
