There are a few tables outside to sit at. Customer service is great. We were greeted right away and the owner was nothing but friendly. We ended up picking 2 mini cupcakes for the kids (sprinkles and chocolate). My kids usually don't like frosting and will scrape it off any cake they eat, but there was nothing left, so I'm sure that means it was a thumbs up on their part! The husband and I chose Peanut Butter Chocolate. OMG. No joke, probably the best cupcake I have eaten in as long as I can remember. I'm not even kidding or exaggerating. The cake was dense and moist, the buttercream frosting was thick and sweet with a slight PB taste, and complimented the cake perfectly. The chocolate and PB flavors blended so nicely... the cupcake also maintained that small bakery/homemade taste. Says something about the ingredients! They also offer vegan and sugar free options. The entire list of flavors is huge, so select flavors are sold each week. I'm really regretting the fact that I didn't take that last butterscotch caramel I saw in the display. $1.50/mini and $3/reg ... pretty good prices for a specialty shop!! I sampled a peanut butter chocolate cupcake before I placed an order for my birthday cake. The cake is super moist and the frosting is great! I ordered a s'mores cake for my birthday which turned out beautiful! I would suggest getting a smaller cake than the recommended serving size though because the cake was so rich and sweet it can only be eaten in small slices before dying of sugar overload. I'm rating a three stars based on the selection and the customer service. I got three cupcakes and it was my first time going here. It's always closed by the time been here. We were greeted and the cupcake lady was very nice. Unfortunately they were out of almost all the cupcakes which was very disappointing. Also, once we reached the register I realized that there was a military discount. We had already paid but once I realized about the discount and asked the "purple haired" cashier she gave me a look and said "yeah". I was obviously irritated from the unwanted attitude. I consider myself somewhat of a cupcake aficionado. When I visited my friend in LA, she'd take me to all the new cupcake shops. I seek them out in other states, like Hawaii. But since (yes, I know every review I've started recently has begun the same, but that is just how it is, le sigh) I had to stop eating wheat, I haven't been to a cupcake store. We stopped in here after a trip to the Mast dog park next door. I read they have gluten free cupcakes, so I had to try it. There was only 1 flavor of GF, chocolate with mint frosting. I asked if that was the only flavor today and the answer was yes, but she had some plain chocolate ones she could top with a different frosting. I asked if I could get a chocolate with chocolate buttercream and she said yes, but they hadn't made any chocolate buttercream yet-- they had chocolate vanilla buttercream. I said great, and took a mini. My daughter got a regular size peanut butter chocolate and my dog got the pupcake (75 cents). We were asked if we wanted them boxed, or a plate to enjoy outside. We're not the type of folks who use plates for cupcakes so I just took them in hand. My mini GF was very moist, and not too sugary like a lot of GF treats are. I liked the buttercream, it was smooth and not too sweet. Sometimes buttercream leaves a coating in my mouth, and a sweet but unpleasant aftertaste-- this did not. I thought it was very well balanced. It was $2 for the mini GF (extra 25 cents for GF). Next time I will probably just pay $3 to get the full-sized and cut it in half-- the full sized is probably equal to 5 minis. But I just wanted a bite today. My daughter liked her peanut butter and chocolate cupcake but could only handle half (she's 8). The dog enjoyed his, and then tried to steal my daughter's. read more

I got really cute cupcake toppers on Etsy that said fun Beyonce lyrics like "He Put A Ring On It" & "Drunk in Love", etc & bought a cupcake tower so I needed the cupcakes to be on point. Santee is out of the way for me. About 20 mins out of the way but I was pricing out cupcakes at work & a coworker recommended The Cupcake Store. I am horrible with making decisions when I am overwhelmed by so many options so I called for help. The prices were much lower than the pricing I was getting for places in my area (North Park/Hillcrest/Normal Heights). I told the lady that I didn't care what I got so long as there was no red velvet- so I ordered an assortment- a dozen mini for $18 & a dozen regular size for $30. She said the regular sized ones were 3x's bigger than normal cupcakes- I thought it was lip service. I asked her if they would melt in a hot car & she said they would refrigerate mine. I pre-orded them 2 days in advance. Upon pick up my cupcakes were cold, didn't budge in transport, were ready on time for my morning pick up & the assortment was perfect. They were too pretty to eat. The minis are truly the perfect size. The regular sized ones are HUGE. Even for a fat kid who loves cake like me. My favorite was the maple bacon one. We cut them up so we could share them. The cake part was very moist and the frostings weren't too rich or overwhelming, they were the perfect amount of sweetness. Santee is out of my way but for these cupcakes I find myself being drawn back out just to get another one. Check them out, I promise you wont be dissapointed! read more

We bought six mini cupcakes including -Chocolate mint -Shortbread cookie -Peanut butter cup chocolate Yes some of these are really sweet (sugary) but I am not driving over here to eat them every day. The important part is that the flavors taste like what they should and the shortbread cookie cupcake is surprisingly good. The store is in a fun location right next to a used book store and even a public library mixed in with the commercial stores. They didn't seem to bother making or selling anything besides cupcakes which I enjoy because you can get in and out with only what you came for . Also, I think they are selling out of the cupcakes everyday so you're always getting the fresh ones. This is the type of family business San Diego enjoys and the owners will talk to you for a couple minutes if you desire. The best part is the convenience driving here from Highway 163. This place is like a hidden gem! I came across it because my daughters dance class is right next door so i figured I'd give it a try for her fourth birthday. We went it in and it smelled so good. I give this company no stars, since the new owners took over. I worked at the cupcake store since April 2021. The original owners were amazing, treated their employees like family and made going into work a wonderful experience. A new Mother and daughter team took over and after 3 months My hours were cut with no discussion. I was asked what hours I could work and let them know and they allowed me to work those hours, a month or so later one of the owners asked if I could work more hours and I let her know I couldn't, then 2 months after that, they changed my Saturday shift from 8 to 12 to 8 to 10 without ever saying a word, I thought it was a typo and asked the other owner if my schedule had changed and she said she didn't know and maybe it was a mistake. I help with the customers and in the back and it is go, go, go the entire time. Last Saturday I I worked 8 to 12 with both owners there and no one said a thing. they didn't tell me to leave at 10 and even asked me to take cake orders because one of the owners didn't know how. so I took the order. after I left work, hours later I was sent only a pic of the schedule, so I asked why that was being sent and then I was told my schedule was changed and I should have left at 10. Again no discussion, She then stated that all my Saturday hours would be cut. I gave 3 weeks notice to find a job that doesn't abuse their employees. Three days later they said they are sending my last paycheck and good luck in my future endeavors. I should have worked until what was going to be my last day and given no notice I guess, but here I did the right thing and was punished after they cut MY hours without a word after working in the store for over 2 years. They are losing employees right and left, as well as customers for poor customer service, not knowing how to do their jobs and for changing fabulous recipes that were already doing well for the last 10 years with previous fabulous ownership. So sad that such a wonderful place has turned into a terrible place that treats their employees like garbage, this also happened to other employees that had worked at the old store. truly sad. You should buy your cakes and cupcakes elsewhere. It is over priced with employees making minimum wage, doing a ton of work to be treated like crap. read more

I was impressed by the number of flavors they offered and she helped me figure out a good mix for the number of kids/adults that would be attending the party.
