MY HUSBAND AND I LOVE THE CUPCAKE STORE!!! We found it through a co-worker and have been in love since first bite. Their flavors are full and unique (my favorites are the Red Velvet and the Fruity Pebbles while my husband likes the Man Cake). We liked it so much that we even asked them to make our wedding cake, gender reveal cupcakes, baby dedication cake, etc. Any time we have a big event we ask them. Amazing!!! I called and asked if they could make five dozen mini cupcakes for a going away party for my son and they said of course. I was to pick them up on Saturday by 3 and well the day got away from me. I stepped into this bakery a half an hour before they closed and they had sold out most of their deserts. Met the owner Anne, who was the sweetest lady ever. I bought a few things such as pistachio macarons and red velvet macarons and some cupcakes. My daughter loved the red velvet macaron but the pistachio one tasted very odd to me. The cupcake frostings for the three different flavored cupcakes were amazing! The cake part wasn't bad either. Discovered this location and the used book store by accident so I had to stop in and try a few. I ordered a dozen mini cupcakes so that I could try the many flavors they had on sale that day. All of the cupcakes were very moist and the frosting wasn't sugary like so many other places seem to be. I think the normal size price was pretty reasonable taking into account what other cupcakeries charge. The minis price I think could be lowered a little bit as they are pretty small. All of the flavors I tried were very good with the exception of the strawberry one, but that's probably the same everywhere as I'm not a big fan of strawberry flavored cake. The chocolate mint and the peanut butter chocolate were the best out of the dozen. I have to wonder what all these people who bicker about the price look like? Are they obese and gorging themselves on sweets 24/7 so when they find a new store whose prices aren't to their liking that they go elsewhere to gorge on a lower quality item? The prices in very comparable to other places that sell a higher quality item than you would get at the supermarket. How often are people going out to get cupcakes anyhow? I consider it to be a treat every now and then, not an essential item that I need to survive. Honestly I don't want to give this place 1 star, but I have to. I still haven't gone back here to try it again, nor will I. This business is a joke. My friend and I went in there and specifically asked the woman at the counter, Yvette, if they only have buttercream, she told us that is the only frosting they use as it is their "signature" frosting. I had my boyfriend call and he was told on the phone they do use cream cheese frosting, but after buying one carrot cake cupcake with, supposedly, cream cheese frosting on it, he was saddened to see buttercream. Also, I love how the only thing I found on Zagat was a link to get a groupon. Maybe that is the only way people will come to this business. Save yourself the money and your taste buds, go elsewhere. There was a sign stating the hours opening at 10:00am. We stood outside with other patrons for about 10 minutes when someone mentioned that it was quite common for the store to open late. The doors finally open and the person who opened the doors did not even greet the patrons. She just opened the doors and went to stand behind the counter. On to the cupcakes. We had the Peanut Butter Chocolate and the German Chocolate cupcakes. The flavor was ok, but the cupcakes were a bit dry. I was SO excited for cupcakes today. We had a field trip scheduled to tour the kitchen, and then buy mini cupcakes for the kids. They were closed, and did nothing to acknowledge us. Luckily, the Santee library took us in and showed the kids a good time. An hour later, they decided to let us in. Cute little shop, in the Santee Library Area. My children and I stop by occasionally to grab a few treats. The carrot-cupcake is always a delight, it's my go to. This time we got 4 minis: mint, vanilla, chocolate and carrot. The chocolate was grainy in the frosting, my chocolate loving 7 year old didn't want to finish it. The others were good though. The little decorations are cute, and I've noticed the decorating in store and on media to have lost its desire; if that is a good description, I can convey. I guess once I tried a few other local shops, it's hard not to compare. The visual aspect has been lost, and I hope the taste doesn't too. I'd suggest check out BabyCakes in Hillcrest, I am not affiliated just a customer, they make delicious, beautiful cakes, at reasonable costs. I ordered a cake here last week, strawberry cake with strawberry icing and roses all around the cake. I had gotten this same cake for my birthday last year and it turned out great, i pointed to the design I wanted (because it was on the wall of the store) and then paid $60 for what i was expecting to be a great cake. I came back a few days later to pick it up and it was NOTHING like what I had ordered, vanilla icing, no roses, the only thing that was the same was the size and the strawberry cake. Most of them begin with the obligatory, standard gelatinous base. Gooey and overbearingly sweet. A Norman Rockwell-like picture, the pecan pie is typically a boring institution. Good but not great. Expected but not valued. But wait. What is this? This pecan pie, created fresh in Santee of all places, is the pinnacle of desserts. That brittle shell top giving way to a perfectly sweet, artisan filling. Did this place unearth a recipe from 1800s Louisiana or something? I feel like I'm biting into something better than me. If a dessert was sentient, this one would have the right to be a narcissist it's so good. I haven't had cupcakes from this particular bakery, but this pie just beat every other pie in the poetry slam. Now to work those calories off by walking to this store to get another one. Wow, they were so good I found out where they were from. And since then I make the drive from central SD to get some. My only gripe is they only make a limited amount of flavors per day. I like this place a lot and I'm always down to support local shops. Compared to other places in San Diego, $2.75 is absolutely reasonable. How do you other reviewers expect them to pay rent? Think of it as a convenience fee for getting a good cupcake locally without having to make up a batch of your own. I agree that there should be seating, Like some others, I've ended up wandering around for a place to sit, only to end up in my car, covered in crumbles. One time my boyfriend and I ended up on the other side of the strip mall because it was the only spot with a table. Also, I bought a cupcake for a relative, which the lady put into a container and then I bought a Pupcake for my dog, which she just handed to me. When I asked for a container, she said no and then said I could buy one for 25 cents. Kind of baffled, I just bought another Pupcake for 75 cents and she gave me a container. I mean, it was pretty obvious I didn't have my dog with me... I guess I was expected to drive home while holding it. I don't know. This is my second visit. The older lady at the register was extremely welcoming. I am BIG on customer service and she defiantly met my expectations. Even noted that I asked my toddler why his mouth was dirty and offered a napkin and asked his name. She explained all the flavors and told us about the current special, buy 3 get 1 free. Really enjoyed the cupcakes I tried at The Cupcake Store. The ManCake was awesome! As was the Red Velvet with Raspberry. The cupcakes are very moist and have a beautiful texture. At $2.75 each, it's a real treat for special friends and occasions. I used to purchase from Flour Power in Fletcher Hills but these blow them out of the water. Not to mention the very friendly service I received at TCS (something you do not get at FP...EVER). I am also a huge fan of TCS frosting. Not sickening sweet or lardy...just right. Glad to stumbled upon this little gem in Santee. I agree with one of the other reviews, it would be nice to have a few tables to sit and enjoy the yummy cupcakes with a cup of coffee. Finally tried this place after wanting to for months, the hours are a bit funky hence why it's taken me so long to try it. After taking a long walk in Mast Park, I thought it would be a nice treat to bring home to my husband! I bought 4 cupcakes, all different flavors so we could split them and try them all. I even bought my doggies one of their "pupcakes", after all they earned it after our long walk :) The total was just under $12, not too bad in my opinion. The flavors I got were Raspberry Red Velvet, Strawberry, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Butterscotch. They were all DELISH!! I'm also very easy to please when it comes to sweets. I've tried Sprinkles cupcakes before and I definitely like these better in comparison. They taste very fresh and homemade in my opinion. I've tried almost every flavor and the only one I think worth buying again is the chocolate peanut butter. The lemon and lime are fairly bland and there isn't anything special about the strawberry, raspberry, or any of the other flavors. The only reason I've been back is to buy for teachers that I know like the cupcakes. While the cupcakes are just OK and the prices somewhat reasonable, the customer service is not! I've been in several times over the last couple years and almost every time the owner has helped me. She's usually very short with me and makes me feel rushed. She has even made me feel as though I am putting her out by buying her cupcakes! She would definitely benefit by being more personable with customers and even reading up on proper customer service etiquette. I honestly don't know how the shop has survived this long and I'm shocked she was able to open another store in Coronado. Hopefully she'll learn to be kind to her customers! read more

Cupcakes are good BUT, I was in there one day when this young lady came in and inquired about a job. She asked how old she needed to be to work there. The girl who was working was nasty and rude to her and responded by saying "I DON'T KNOW! How old DO you have to be?" And she wouldn't give her an application. Poor girl.
