Heaven help me for patronizing an American chain eatery (even a relatively good one) while vacationing abroad, but the reality of travelling with a large group is that sometimes you have to play the middle of the road. With vegetarians and other conservative eaters in our party, we found this place a godsend for a midafternoon pre-Trinity-College-sightseeing meal. Actually, it's pretty good on its own merits. I've eaten at other Counters and I like the setup...but there are too many choices! Patty, bun, cheese, toppings, and sauce. So many options! But if you enjoy culinary creativity and/or control, you will not go wrong here. The sides are good too, except that they were out of fried pickles. Sad face. We enjoyed regular fries, sweet potato fries, and grilled vegetables. Everyone enjoyed their burgers, so the meal was a success. Ironically, The Counter has table service, so it's not quite as quick as you might hope. But their sodas are from a fountain (yay, American style) so you can get refills. Plus, a bonus--their soundtrack of classic rock and respectable 80s and 90s tunes inspired at least four individuals in our multigenerational group to sing at various times. You know what? Kudos for having a delicious veggie patty. It was good. The guac cost me an extra €0.50 and it was very so-so. Giant bottle of Staropramen for a good price rounded out the positives attributes of my meal. Hubs' sweet potato fries were the 2nd best I've ever had (after the defunct 501 Club in Minneapolis). Unfortunately the rest of the meal was overrun with immense amounts of oil. My burger bun arrived. It was the color yellow and the consistency of a soggy sponge. That means somebody dipped it in Golden-Flo cooking oil before crisping it back up. Yes, it tastes delightful...the same way deep-fried Twinkies taste delightful. The guilt of eating it manages to cancel out the enjoyment. Also ruined by oil were the onion STRINGS. Confession: I thought they were onion rings. With just an 'R'. I was duped and disappointed when the STRings arrived looking all skinny and limp. Sure, they were promisingly covered in tasty batter...but as soon as I grabbed the first one, the underneath strings crunched the pile, which subsequently disintegrated into an oily pile of fried dough and stringy onion film on the plate. Not cool. The oil-to-food ratio ended up leaving me with hours of tummy feelings the equivalent to a brick buried in a pit thrown into a black hole. Had to take a dinner coma nap on the couch when I got home. Oh and I am from California so I am allowed to say this: For a California-based and California-themed restaurant, it feels nothing like California. Post New Year's Eve hangover required comfort food. Wings and burgers sounded about right. Having had a great experience in The counter in Dundrum, my hopes were high. Went in to order food to go. Had a cup of tea while waiting.....and waiting....and waiting. 50 minutes later!!!!! I complained because I felt that was an unacceptable wait time and I was given 25% off the bill. Which I was satisfied with...until I got home with the food. My order: turkey burger with avocado, jalapeños, Spicy cheese and chipotle aioli, sweet potato fries, wings, corn on the cob, a beef burger with crispy fried onions, red onion relish and cheese, and a kids mini burger meal. With a kids chocolate milkshake and a large vanilla malt. When I was ordering I was told the corn came with feta and spicy seasoning, yummy I thought!! What we got: Beef burger with salsa not relish. Turkey burger with no jalepenos and the wrong cheese Corn thrown in the box with the sweet potato fries and no dressing. The 2 milkshakes, which were given to me 10 mins into the 50 minute wait. And NO KIDS meal!!! Never mind me, the kids were very, very unhappy!!!! The portion of chicken wings was much smaller than what you get when you sit in, and when being charged the same price, this is unacceptable. Not sure I will make a return visit. If you're fussy, like myself, you can make sure there aren't any surprises in your burgers, like enemy onions, BECAUSE you can build your own! It's €9.95 for 1.3lbs (cooked weight), which is....something in grams. That's the cheapest option but that's a pretty decent sized burger. You can choose to have your burger with beef, chicken, turkey or a veggie patty. What's even more awesome is that if you're there with a cutiepie, you can share your fries! It's €3.95 for a regular portion of fries...although I just checked the menu & apparently there's a single portion of fries for €1.75, so I assume the regular portion is larger than two single portions otherwise I probably deserve to fail my math exam today. Although to be honest the fries aren't exactly mind-blowing, their burgers is what you should go for. If you're doing a low-carb thing, you can also switch your bun for a bowl of either lettuce blend or baby greens. Oh & they also have a deal at the moment for one of their signature burgers & a beer for €11.95, that's a DEEEAL! One of my favourite burges places in Dublin. Love the fact that you can make your own burger picking the type of meat, size, bun, cheese, sauces and toppings. There's a big variety of options too, which is great as it allows you to try something different each time. The burger I got was REALLY good and the sweet potatoes fries were some of the best I've had. My friend also ordered the peanut butter milkshake and I got to try some..it was SO good! I was way too full to get a milkshake as well but next time I go I'll make sure to leave some room for it. Oh and the sauces were AMAZING! Staff was super nice too and we got served pretty fast. The restaurant gets pretty busy in the early evening (usually after 6) so go early and bring your appetite. The portions are incredibly generous and the food is SO tasty. With a ton of choices and toppings to create my own burger, I was super excited and overwhelmed. I started picking things that normally would not be paired together, and after re-choosing my burger combination a few times I just decided to just go with the cranberry turkey burger. The turkey burger was not too dry and didn't make me feel disgusting afterwards. The deep fried pickles were a nice side to share too. I saw that they had some upcoming vanilla bourbon ice cream sandwiches but was a little disappointed that they were not available yet. The burger was excellent, loved the crispy onion rings on the burger. There is also a varied choice of beers, the Moosehead was a refreshing accompaniment to the burger. If you like burger, in this place you will feel like a child playing with Coca-Cola and Mentos. There are sooo many combinations that choosing your ingredients can be a tough challenge. If you don't want to think there are several menus and hamburgers but I found far more interesting to create your own "artwork". It's true that it takes a while and can be a bit annoying (especially if you have been drinking before...) but after all the sacrifice the reward is quite amazing. You can choose even the bread, the quality of the meat and the rest of the ingredients is great and the onions rings are the best I've ever taste out of home. Popped in here on a lunch-break last week, having been in here many times before and loving their almost infinite combinations of salady-burgery concoctions. It took a very long time to get the server's attention as they were all busy standing at the bar counter talking. An apt place to talk considering the restaurant name, I suppose. I had to approach one of the waitresses, despite being one of only three groups in there and there being 4 servers. The food took another age to arrive, and while my substantial and delicious turkey burger with feta and salad was amazing - I had to wolf it down to beat the band. It just so happens that the city I used to live in back in the States has a Counter, so when some other expats and I heard about a new Counter opening so close to Grafton (yes, we are that lazy that going to Dundrum is too far) we all agreed we had to go there as soon as possible. We were all happy to report that at the end of the meal, we found The Counter here to be just as satisfying as we remembered it from California. If you've never been to a build a burger place before, you basically get a menu with lots of options where you put a check mark next to the options you want on your burger. You start with what kind of meat (beef, chicken, etc.), how much (1/3, 2/3, or 1 lb if you are adventurous and very very hungry), cheese, toppings, sauces, and bun type. If you find the options too much--don't worry, putting the wrong checkmark is basically like choosing between the Jedwards since you can't go wrong--you can choose from standard fare options. There are also a wide selection of sides, wines, beers, and deserts. My group and I all made our own burgers. I got 1/3 lb beef on a bun, monterey jack cheese, dill pickles, mixed greens, scallions, corn, and the garlic aioli sauce, and then shared sweet and regular fries with the group. The burger was very tasty and cooked wonderfully. I hate it when you can't taste the cheese due to all the other toppings, but this burger was made so well, you could taste each topping. If you need any more reason to go here, my French friend went for the full pound of beef and finished it before anyone else finished their burgers! so it must have been tasty! read more

I used to frequent The Counter in Palo Alto, CA and build my veggie burger in a bowl with all the best fixin's. To discover that Dublin has its' hands on this excellent chain is sweet! A regular burger (or in a bowl) is about 9.95 and then goes up if you add -extra- toppings. You can chose between beef, turkey, or veggie. And, most of the toppings are included! Fries are extra but tasty. There's also a full bar so get your drink on while waiting for your burger. (Although the wait for our burgers took a bit longer than we expected.) The buzz is awesome - from tourists, to college kids, to families, to cool couples (like me and my guy)! And, if you're a healthy eater, again, go for the veggie burger in a bowl and it will not disappoint! Now, do they have a 'shake' to go with those fries...?! read more

Love the tick-box DIY menu...spent at least fifteen mins deliberating what to put in my monstrosity of a burger...and it was bloody worth it! Good quality meat and a huge array of stuff to accompany it. Not too badly priced, the smallest of the three burger sizes is just under a tenner, going up to around 15 quid for the big daddy size. Tasty fries and sweet potato chips served with a lovely sauce...although these came a good while before the burgers so I'd nearly finished them by the time the mains arrived...although I do lack massively in restraint when it comes to chips, so that was my bad. Good drink selection, with several decent beers all for under a fiver and a good cocktail list with everything priced at a fiver. It's trying to market itself as a lounge/DJ bar later on in the eve (some lass from Fade Street [apparently] was pretending to DJ as we were leaving), so good luck to them. The place is comfy enough, so I probably would consider coming in for a couple of drinks before heading on somewhere at some point in the future. Staff was friendly...although the baseball caps and three-quarter length trousers didn't do them any favours (this is 2011,people!). Everyone has been recommending this restaurant to me because of my love another burger related restaurant. So I thought I would give it a go...and I was pretty disappointed. It's a terrible menu - hard to read, too many options, too complicated... Then a smart-ass waitress who almost laughs when you don't order properly. I went with my former manager here so we were talking and catching up while trying to decipher what the hell was going on. It was plain annoying! I thought the burger was badly cooked. I thought it was expensive for something thats not really quality. On the plus side the roasted vegetables were pretty impressive but I don't go to a burger bar for roasted veg! Disclaimer: I've never been a huge fan of The Counter in the states but I always thought the customizable aspect of their burgers offered an interesting experience. Nonetheless, my friend was craving the old US of A in Ireland, so we stopped by. Two things made this Counter suck. 1) The burger patty was cooked well done, sapping any remaining juicy goodness away, leaving away a wilted, dejected piece of cardboard for you to crunch on. In the US, I believe you can order your burger the proper way, with blood. 2) The Irish "style" fries (I think cheddar topping on chips) were horrible. The cheese was nuked inconsistently and slopped on in gargantuan amounts. So you got dried cheese and soggy cheese together in some freakish argyle arrangement. Mmmm. We came to The Counter not long after it opened, so things may have improved but this bad impression makes me hesitant of giving it a second chance. read more

There are two ways to order: Select a predefined burger from the menu or build your own by filling in a form and ticking off the options you require. There is a massive choice and I have never been disappointed by the food. Sizes, meats, toppings, sauces and bun, or lack of one, can all be configured to your liking. All the staff are really nice, kind and friendly while never being over the top. They just seem to forget about you every so often. I've been here lots of times and I don't think there has ever been an occasion where I didn't need to leave my seat to say something like, "Can I get a menu?" "Can I make my order now?" "Is the burger nearly ready, its been 30 minutes?" "My drink never arrived?" And so on... It's a credit to the food that I keep going back, but like I said the staff are really nice they just need to be a tiny bit more attentive. Only problem is there is too much to choose from. I take forever to decide. But all combinations so far have worked out. Terrible experience here today. We ordered three of the same standard sandwiches off the menu which we expected would arrive a little bit quicker than making your own burger which naturally takes that bit longer. We also each ordered sweet potato fries. When one of my party asked the waitress what drinks they had, she laughed in his face and asked what did he mean, I thought this was strange behaviour from a waitress. After waiting half an hour (which is a very long time to be sitting around waiting for your food to arrive) we had to ask a waiter for an update who responded with some nonsense about an extra order causing the delay, it finally arrived a few minutes later. While the sandwiches were good, the sweet potato fries arrived cold. In addition, our waitress was incredibly rude, threw our order on the table and didn't apologise for the delay (another waitress did apologise to us). I am generally patient, but considering we only ordered sandwiches and fries, were being charged over €15 each and were being served by an incredibly rude waitress we felt it necessary to complain and we were granted a discount, but not good enough to entice me to ever return. I would advise if you are going here, make sure you have time to wait around and make it worth your while by ordering a burger or something substantial and don't expect good service. read more

The burgers are always excellent, but the last three times I have come here, the wait for taking our orders and then bringing out the food has been ridiculous. I have waited 40 minutes+ for burgers and chips here on at least three occasions. Also their seating/tables feel cheap and are uncomfortable. So for both of the above reasons recently when we've been in the mood for burgers we remember how long the counter takes and we just go elsewhere. there is some stiff competition for good burgers in the city centre and I felt the food here was alright but nothing special or that different to distinguish itself from the pack. the gimmick where you get a sheet with loads of different options of how to make your burger is neat but not for me. You have your choice of cheeses, up to 4 additional toppings (included in the price of the burger), premium toppings for a measly extra 50 cents (and the portion they give you for that 50 cents is huge) and sauces. He forgot about our drinks and we had to ask someone else to get them and before that I also asked if they had wheat beer (which they did - paulaner) and he said no we don't have that, I then said oh ok and looked at the menu and seen paulaner a German wheat beer and said ill just take that then..
