Imagine my delight upon spotting The Counter, one of my favorite burger chains from California, in the center of Dublin. One of the things I miss the most about the US, is a good burger, and there was a glimmer of hope in my eyes when I spotted this place. Just like it's American counterparts, this location offers customers the ability to customize their burgers and add as many, or as few toppings as they like. The choice here seemed a bit bigger than the offerings I remembered from the restaurant in Palo Alto, CA, despite this, I went for my old favorite: 1/3 pound beef burger with blue cheese, scallions, lettuce blend, bacon and the roasted garlic sauce. Words cannot describe how excited I was. Additionally, my husband and I ordered a 50/50 of sweet potato and regular fries. The fries were fantastic. Probably the best sweet potato fries I've had this side of the Atlantic. The burger, on the other hand, not so much. Yes, the toppings are brilliant. Everything I wanted was present and correct, and in good quantity, but the actual burger did not live up to expectation. The difference between this location and the one in Palo Alto, CA is that in California, you had a choice in how well cooked your burger will be. In Dublin, not so much. The patty itself was quite charred and a bit dry, but the charring really overwhelmed the flavor of the rest of the burger. Perhaps I set my expectations too high based on all the wonderful experiences I had with The Counter in America, but I can say with certainty that I won't return to this location, despite the amazing sweet potato fries and excellent service. Also, it was quite expensive with a plan burger starting at €7.50, and customized burgers starting at €9.95. read more

I was dragged here on Sunday by my sister who was craving wings, which she maintains are the best available here. I was reluctant as I have previously eaten in the Dundrum branch and was distinctly unimpressed by both the food and service. This branch however was much much better, both in terms of food quality and service. The wait staff were lovely and as I don't eat meat, there are a couple of different options, and a great veggie burger. Unlike most of the veggie burgers in Dublin, theirs is not too heavy and tastes really fresh. Also I can have avocado on it, delish. I can't give it more that 3 stars however, as my sister ordered a Pink Cadillac cocktail, which was served in a martini glass (she has had it many times before and it always comes in a long glass, there was about half that quantity this time) when she questioned it she was told she was wrong and the lady, who seemed to be the manager was very brisk about it. I think the main reason for this restaurant is so that the cooks can get the orders and say "this douchebag wants goats cheese with red peppers and sprouts.....what an ass! He obviously doesn't know anything about food combinations!" I'm almost positive this what happens and here is my rebuttal. What kind of restaurant is so lazy and inherently insecure that they literally give you hundreds of options to put on your burger and make it harder on the menu to order one of the pre-designed burgers? All that said I think that most of the bajillions of ingredients are of decent quality but I just don't care for the whole 'choose your own adventure' burger. I want to see what a good chef can come up with in terms of flavor combinations. If the whole schtick of your place is to let people have a ton of options then it basically means you don't want to put yourself and your own ideas into the cooking. read more

The Counter's main attraction is a gimmick in which you can tick boxes on the menu to make your own custom burger. This seems kind of fun and cool at first but when you make a mess of things it's kind of on you. It over complicates the process of ordering a burger. That being said the burgers are typically pretty good. You can get as many of the standard toppings as you want, but then you have to pay for the more fancy toppings such as avocado, sun dried tomatoes and smoked bacon. If you know what you like you can make a nice burger. If you go over board with the toppings you could very easily make a mess of things. My main complaint about The Counter would be the price. For what you get it is definitely way too expensive. Other issues would be the wait time for food (about 40 minutes to an hour on average) and the uncomfortable chairs. Their sides are pretty decent. Most of them are the same as Eddie Rockets (the sweet potato fries, chicken wings etc.) but there are a few more bigger nicer fancier dishes. All in all the place is good. Four star quality food but I give it three seen it is way over priced and the wait times are so long. If your looking for a good burger you are probably better off going to Bunsen but if you have a big group this place will be able to cater for your groups burgerly needs. read more

These dudes know how to cook a burger! Literally the sexiest burgers known to man. You get a cool checklist and basically do a DIY job on whats in your sex burger. You pick the size, bun, toppings, fancy toppings and sauce. Really the main event is the burgers but in terms of sodes they have a wide and delicious selection.... although warning - their portion sizes are gigantic I struggle everytime (they are made for sharing between 2 but could probably feed 3/4). The have rootbeer and alcohol which is a nice bonus! One drawback for me is I'm always cold in this place. This place does seriously good burgers! I'm not the most creative person when it comes to food so the build a burger option was to much for me, I decided for the counter burger, if they named the place after it must be damn good. Huge burger filled with every sin and the most beautiful taste. The stand out was the crispy onions on top. The burger took some twisting and turning to fit into my mouth. I eventually had to use a knife and fork to power through. The burger is up there with some of the best I've ever had. Simply fantastic! Shared a plate of fries which is a monster size along with a nice chilli dip. The menu is fantastic with something to suit everyone. The drink menu consists of house wines, spirits and selected beers and ciders from around the world. I opted for a New Zealand cider which was very quenching. Place is clean, spacious and staff are helpful and friendly who'll explain the in's and out's of the menu. Located just around the corner of grafton street. Last night in Dublin for my boyfriend and I and we wanted burgers. We googled best burgers in Dublin and The Counter came up as one of them. So, we said, alright lets give it a go! Atmosphere: Modern bar. Very busy and noisy. Service: Not the best. We got seated pretty quickly but we waited forever before someone came to take our drink order. I saw multiple staff members just hanging out. Some of them eating a the bar just chatting. Our waitress didn't even say hi - just "are you ready to order?" When I asked a few questions about the burgers she was pretty clueless. Nice enough and all, but honey, you really should know your menu. She never asked us what temp we wanted our burgers cooked to either. Once we ordered our burgers, it took a good 25 minutes before they came out. A food runner gave us our plates. While we were waiting I noticed that the majority of the staff looked about 16 years old. Maybe a night time manager would be a good idea?? Our waitress did check in but didn't keep an eye on our drinks and I ran out of soda before finishing my burger AND my boyfriend ran out of his beer. Missed opportunity to earn more money.... When we finished our meal, we sat there a long time before someone else came to clear our dishes. We then waited for the bill for another 10 minutes....Thank goodness we didn't need change and could just get up and leave! Food: The food, however, was really good. I got the Old School Burger, very classic beef burger, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, red onions, relish sauce, brioche bun. The burger meat is antibiotic and hormone free and really did taste fresh and delicious. All the stuff that came with it complemented the burger nicely and I was definitely pleased. The relish sauce really made it. My boyfriend got the Bacon BBQ Burger - beef burger, cheddar cheese, smoked bacon, tomatoes, lettuce, fried onion strings, hickory BBQ sauce on brioche bun. He thought it was really good. The fried onion strings were really good and the BBQ sauce was tangy and sweet. We both got the shoestring fries and they were okay. Nothing special, but not bad. If they seasoned them a bit it might take things up a notch. The presentation of the burgers is quite impressive. The fries come in a separate stand up container which is fun. There is a full bar with beer, wine, and cocktails. My boyfriend got 8 degrees sunburnt red beer which he liked quite a bit. I just had a diet coke. You can make your own burger if you don't want to get a specific one on the menu. There are a variety of burger bases, buns, toppings, sauces, and such to choose from. If you don't want fries for a side they have sweet potato fries, side salads, coleslaw, etc. They offer other menu items as well such as sandwiches, salads, appetizers, shakes/malts/floats. Cost: Most of the burgers were 10-12 euros. You pay extra for sides. The fries we got added an additional 2.50 euros each. My boyfriends beer was 5 euros, my soda 3 euros. So, as always, it adds up quick, but the prices are pretty reasonable. Especially because you really do get your money's worth. The burgers are no joke! But even when customised to your palate, the burger isn't all that good (particularly when you're paying €10 for it). Has to be the BEST burger I've ever had....I just went for the basic toppings but there are lots to choose from and I had more than enough. I went for a bun but think I'll be getting the salad the next time as it seems like more of a meal and you kinda feel like your having something healthy. Peanut butter milkshake!!! Delicious!!! I have generally had a good experience with this place with the exception of the last visit (more later). Basically, they offer a few pre-set burger combinations or you can build your burger from the bun upwards, selection bun type, toppings, sauces, cheeses, etc. to perfect your burger combination. I have been here a few times where they had burger/beer combinations which was a pretty solid deal for a burger and a beer. Fries you buy a la carte style but they offer standard fries, cheese fries and sweet potato fries which have all been good. The burger quality is good and you can look to spend about 10 Euro for one of these burgers and about 5 for fries, so you are looking at a little bit of a pricey lunch, but this is okay every now and again. Now my last visit, I didn't even end up sitting down unfortunately. I arrived with a buggy and the restaurant was quite a bit more full than usual. They told us to wait as they didn't have a place for the buggy and then immediately began to sit a group that just walked in the door. They then asked us if our son could sit in one of the baby chairs. This is what we intended the entire time but since they decided to not even acknowledge us until after they sat a group which arrived after us, there was even more limited seating available. We weren't happy with the way they treat their customers and walked out and tried Gourmet Burger Kitchen around the corner. Almost the same thing anyway. It wasn't even what they said as much as how they said it, but it will be a long time before I pay for overpriced burgers in here again. read more

I opted for the turkey burger (in a bowl), with avocado, bacon and feta cheese, and boy was it delish! Very nice burgers, you can either 'create your own' or go for one of the recipes. Went with one of the suggestions, it takes a little bit to be ready, very nice presentation. Today we skipped breakfast and went straight for lunch, so by the time we got here, I was very hungry! We got the low down on how it worked and then furiously started ticking boxes. There was so much choice. I am not going to even begin to list them. But they will probably have what you want. While waiting for our food, I took in the interior. It had a choice of all sorts of tables. For groups of six, eight or ten. Then there was the counter too. A seat for all numbers of groups, from one to many. I liked the decor too, bright and clean. We noticed the tables were quite spacious. So lots of room for side orders and drinks etc. It's something that a lot of eating establishments tend to forget about, table space. Our burgers came as ordered. Me, I went for the 1/3 pounder on a bun. I added on Irish Red cheddar, coleslaw, grilled onion and grilled pineapple. With mayo. The table already had the Heinz (phew, I was starting to panic). It was yummeee. The chili fries were very good too. We were stuffed by the end of it and very happy with ourselves and the choices we made when ordering. We are definitely going to make a return visit, if not for the burgers, definitely for the adult milkshakes they had on the menu. My eye is on the vanilla and Baileys one.... This place is Legen... wait for it.... dary! I went here for lunch with a friend and this place really ticks all the boxes. There is something for everyone, and the burger in a bowl is awesome! If you go during lunch (mon - fri) , they have a good soda+burger (or burger bowl) + fries for 9.95 euros. And trust me, there is NO WAY you are going to finish all that food. At least I couldn't! I ordered the Mediterranean burger in a bowl, with a side of sweet potato fries. Both were FABULOUS! If you don't want to order one of the burgers or burger in a bowls on the menu, you can also build your own burger. One thing to keep in mind that the burger doesn't come with a side, so if you want something other than just your burger, you may want to also order one of their sides. But if you get a burger in a bowl, in my opinion, I don't think you really need one. read more

What a treat this was. Such a great menu to chose from. It was a hard decision but I made it in the end under pressure. I had burger in a bowl with lettuce, bacon, onions, back been, and mushrooms. I did have food envy at my friends bowl of crispy union strings, ham and coleslaw. Will defo have to come back to get that one. Sweet potato fries were great value at just two euro for a small portion. That's all you ever need really. They were very tasty too. Best I've tried around. Best burger I've had in Dublin so far!!! So, I love burgers and I am picky when it comes to what I like. I will say that I have not tried their burger, that day I had a burger bowl, which was mostly a salad and was absolutely delicious. However, I tried to order a burger initially, and quite frankly, it was a bit too much work. I never liked burgers that are so big you need to cut them in two and then eat it, or eat with a fork and knife, and this place is really like that. I expected a lot more from The Counter when I went there. And I left feeling less satisfied than I though I would. I liked the idea of choosing your burger and doing all of the options. It's fun. But if you're in a rush, it can be a bit of a pain and time consuming, so in this instance, I had the bison burger. And my guest and I split a rather huge order of sweet potato fries. The burger was fine, but as a big bison fan, it could have been better and perhaps less-dry. I know that bison is a very lean meat. I've had it many times in Canada and the US and Italy. But then the toppings should compensate for this. The fries were yummy. Very generous. And I would highly recommend. However, there are a lot more burger places in Dublin to try out, and so I'll leave this place for now. read more

Weird place. Weird if you are a bad cook and you are not too good with picking what would go well with what. Summing up, you are getting this deconstructed menu where you first picking your meat (veggie, beef,chicken, turkey etc) then cheese (million types), bun/salad bowl, sides, feelings (two million types) etc. It's like a Russian roulette so you might either end up with something really bad or weird at your plate (and be thankful to yourself) or with something extremely good (thankful to yourself as well) read more

Went with a friend and ordered a burger off their main menu. Upon receiving the burger, we both noticed that the chips we had ordered were not freshly cut, and looked like regular french fries from any generic fast food joint. Fine to eat, but wouldn't fill you up. The burger was small, and while having some nice roasted greens, you weren't left with a long lasting desire to return, as the burger was so bland. Overall was disappointed with the meal and felt that it was just an up-market fast food restaurant, certainly not a gourmet burger bar. Will not be returning. read more

Was there with 2 Malaysian friends and 1 Irish friend. 5/5 from C. 3.5/5 from A. 4/5 from me and my bf. Table for 4 people is a bit small for us 4 (maybe its cos im fat???) - ok for sitting but awkward when reaching for food. Meat is v good - i had chicken (totally delicious!). Friend #1 said "the avocado was divine! They also make a mean guacamole" friend #2 said that our waitress isnt good. My honey wheat bun was baked a bit too long so its hard. I loved their chips topped with chilli con carne. Onion stringers (rocket) was a bit too thin cant really taste the onions itself. Boyf said he liked the idea of having a custom built burger - more better that way. Lighting was dimmed towards the end but when asked to change it back, the management did make it less dim (as im deaf i need to see faces not in the dark!!!) Oh the toilet was nice and clean. It is true... I had my best Burger experience ever at The Counter!!! The concept of this restaurant chain is simple but unique: You can custom build your burger. Everything is at your choice: The size of the burger (up to 1 lb!!!), the meat, the bun, the cheese (about 12 different gourmet cheese types), the toppings, the sauce and so on... I had a 1lb burger made from best Irish beef. And this giant burger was broiled just perfectly. If you had a burger at The Counter you will never ever want to eat a ready-made burger from BK or McD again. And you have to try hard to make such a perfect burger at home. read more

Very good burger indeed. I kept it quite vanilla with 1/3lb beef on a bun with yellow American cheese, pickle, grilled onion and chipotle aioli. With a side of fried pickle chips. The beef was delicious, cheese perfectly melted but the onion wasn't a great choice and the aioli extremely mild and somewhat tasteless. Pickle chips were ok. Nice option to have but not the best fried pickles I've ever had. Definitely worth a visit but for what it is (and the cost) it loses out to Bunsen on Wexford street. read more

Love this place too much! Basically it's a burger bar but one of the best in Dublin, you get a survey like menu and you fill it in by ticking boxes for what you want! So pick your burger meat, chicken or beef or whatever and then you pick if you want it in a bun or in a bowl ( so like a salad) and then pick all the toppings you want and the sauce you want. I always get my burger in a bowl, makes me feel like I'm being super healthy despite all the yummy sauces and toppings I add ! Sweet potato fries are also divine here and desserts are yum too, the choc chip cookie is delish! I've also tried the peanut butter milkshake which is lovely but like a meal itself! Love visiting the counter. Getting the choice for exactly what you want is a huge plus and I've been here a few times now and it has been on point every time. I'm also biased because they label their vegan options and for me that takes a lot of stress out of eating out, plus most people can have food there so it's pretty inclusive. As a vegetarian I'm often stuck with the same, boring option (Goats' cheese, again?) but this place solves that problem by letting me build my own creation. I'm only docking a star (and it would be half a star if it was possible) because the pre-designed veggie burger on the menu isn't really much to write home about. Mains aside, they have a lovely selection of craft beer and their adult shakes and deserts are great. read more
