We made a reservation on Juneteenth for 5 pm. It was surprisingly empty. First impressions, a little disappointing that they were missing so any options on the menu. They were all out of the beef for the red stew, they were sold out of okra stew due to lack of ingredients. I was also disappointed in the drink menu. Although they had tons of alcohol options, I'm hoping to see more non-alcoholic options. I ordered ginger beer but they only had ginger ale. It would be nice to see more options such as ginger beer in house, fresh juices, palm wine, malt, etc.... Service: Despite the restaurant being empty the service was lacking. It was slow, they forgot to bring my drink until I asked. They forgot to provide silverware. Food came out at weird timings and not all together. It would be nice if sides are ordered to ask if we want all food at once to keep everything warm and enjoy with the meal or if we want the side as an appetizer. Food: Cassava leaf $36 - 5/5 Red stew chicken $33 - 3.5/5 Suya beef $36 - 5/5 Fried Plantains $9 - 4/5 Side continent jollof rice (Nigerian) $11 - 3/5 Fire sauce - 5/5 The cassava leaf was my favorite thing! It was juicy, sweet, and tastes homemade and fresh. I thought the red stew and chicken was alright, no spice but with that fire sauce it elevated it a bit more. The jollof was a bit bland and dry. If you know me, then you know I live for a good African restaurant with great food and even better vibes--and The Continent never disappoints. From the moment we arrived, the hostess was warm and welcoming. She explained that Happy Hour was available in both sections of the restaurant and gave us the option of a quieter atmosphere on the left or music and energy on the right. Since it was my birthday, we obviously chose the side with the music! And let me tell you--their Happy Hour is amazing, with plenty of time to enjoy it. The only thing missing from the menu is a few more mocktail options. The décor is beautiful--stylish and elegant without feeling overdone. Everything feels intentional and inviting. Our waitress greeted us right away and took great care of us throughout the evening. We ordered the snapper with jollof rice and salad, plus a mocktail for me while my girls enjoyed cocktails. Everyone loved their drinks, and the food was absolutely delicious. The first time I visited, I only tried the jollof rice, but this visit confirmed that everything coming out of that kitchen is top-tier. The customer service was exceptional. Even when our waitress was busy, the owner stopped by to check on us, and other team members made sure we had everything we needed. To top it all off, they surprised me with a beautiful birthday dessert and sang to me, which made the celebration even more special. The vibes here are always unmatched. The staff were very nice. Our server Gigi was super helpful, and attentive. While the ambiance was lively, the food was slow and underwhelming. If the service had not been so good, I would have given this establishment 2 stars. Most of our drinks took 20 mins, and our food took about an hour from when we sat down. I believe notifying the guests that the food is "made to order", the expectation of a short wait time could be reduced. Overall, this restaurant was okay. My second visit back to Continent, and I brought some coworkers who were looking for a great Happy Hour. There was an event going on in the side room, but the main dining room was quiet except for the afrobeats playing. We sat at the bar, and our bartender Dani went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our time and got our orders to us quickly. I ordered a French 75 and the Continent Margarita. The Margarita is a uniquely made drink, with cinnamon being its highlight. It's truly unlike any margarita I've ever had. I've been to The Continent in Washington, DC several times now, and it's quickly become one of my go to spots in the city. Every visit has been consistently great, which says a lot. I've had the chance to try a variety of dishes from the red snapper to the chicken suya and everything has been full of flavor and well-prepared. You can really tell there's attention to detail in the seasoning and presentation, and the menu offers a nice range of options if you're going with a group or like trying different things. The drinks are also a highlight, well-made, refreshing, and a perfect complement to the food. On top of that, the playlist always sets the mood. We get there and it's busy but not full at all but the vibe is high energy and fun. Waiter takes drink orders for the half of us who are there. Ten minutes later everyone else arrives but we still don't have our drinks. Everyone orders drinks and food and we decided to order our second round of drinks because they take so long. But still no first drinks! THE FOOD COMES, right as our drinks finally get there but only the drinks for those of us who ordered them half an hour ago. The wait for food was very short but the wait for drinks was crazy. We're pretty much done eating our food and the birthday girl's drinks still have not arrived and neither have our second round of drinks so we tell the guy to cancel all those drinks. Imagine booking a birthday dinner at a place like this and going home sober because they couldn't get any drinks out to your table! They specialize in PARTIES and couldn't serve us half our drink smh Did I mention they started bringing us to go boxes without asking? While a lot of us were halfway through our food? Ok so the check comes and there are still drinks on it that we told him to cancel, that we never got. We explain it and he goes off, comes back with a check that fixed SOME of what we explained. So he goes back again to get it right. Then when he billed the credit cards he messed that ALL UP. We split it evenly on five cards but somehow he tried to charge one card double and another card apparently never got charged. So you can't get us our drinks and you can't even take our money correctly either? Wildest restaurant business model I ever heard of lmao If you're still reading this, the food was good! I recently had the opportunity to have brunch here at a discounted rate. And even at the discounted rate, it was not worth it. I did reach out to one of the owners to offer feedback, but he never responded to me. All good. I will spare you the nitty-gritty details, but here's a high-level overview: When we walked in on Sunday at 1 PM, we were shocked to see that we were only the second group of people there. There were two of us, and there were two other women dining. In all of my years, living in and visiting the DMV, I have never seen a DC brunch spot like this. I should've known then what was ahead of me. We were not discouraged, however, so we went in and hoped for the best. They tried to set us in the area overlooking the lower level dining area. It was almost as if they were trying to save space. But there was literally nobody else there, so we asked if we could have a half both. They obliged and at the start, we're very nice and accommodating. When we went down to the actual brunch buffet area, we were immediately underwhelmed. Shrimp/cold seafood bar: DRIED TF OUT. Didn't taste fresh and wasn't giving flavor. Beef stew: the flavor of the stew was good, but you could probably lose a tooth trying to eat that beef. The beef was so aggressively tough for the most part, until you found a fatty piece or one random piece, that it wasn't even worth eating. I brought this to the attention of the staff and initially, they spoke to me like I was a dumb American, who had never had this dish or a similar dish before. They explained that the meat was deep fried and then put into the stew. I explained that I understood that, had had it before, and that it clearly had not been stewed long enough. It was so bad I actually ended up speaking to their chef/consultant chef about it. Catfish stew: side eye. That's all I have to offer there. Pretty much all of the stews that they had tasted exactly the same with slight flavor variations as a result of the protein. Jollof rice: NOW, I'm team Ghana jollof for life. BUT I have had other jollof that was both Nigerian style, or from other West African countries and enjoyed it. That was not the case here. I don't know what this rice was, but it was not good. It really tasted like uncle Ben's rice that had been rinsed, then rolled around in pepper/tomato oil. I was so disappointed. Plantains: dry AF. Both my homegirl and I are Caribbean and when we put them on our plate, we couldn't help but joke that they were tostones without being tostones and were posing as thin fried sweet plantains. French toast: undercooked and soggy. I brought this to the attention of the chef as well. He eventually informed me that this had to be the result of the griddle they used at that station, not getting hot enough quick enough to produce the result needed. Handed up, cooking me a slice in a pan, but by that point we were almost on our way out. I don't have the energy to go through the rest of the food, but nothing was impressive, and the pastries were store-bought. Confirmed this at the restaurant. Drinks: they do not offer fountain drinks and a can of Coke is about five dollars. My friend ordered a mocktail called a Serengeti and the bartender made it incorrectly. She dropped it off and didn't check back on us for like 25 or 30 minutes. When she did, we informed her that the drink was incredibly sour and that we had to add soda water to it. She told us that was her fault and that she had forgotten to add it. Later, when I asked her to take it off because it was not good and had been made incorrectly, she said, "I made it correctly. I just forgot to add something." I'm not going to go into detail about how the rest of the exchange with her after that was, but just know that it was so wild that she ended up coming back and apologizing after a bit. Not impressed or amused. I really wanted to love this place and I really wanted it to be my favorite local African spot. Keep in mind - I'm not new to West African food at all. I lived in GH. However, I'm incredibly disappointed in my experience and wouldn't recommend, especially for brunch. Brunch is $55 per person and that does not include drinks. You can look at the pictures I've uploaded and see the plates pushed to the side of the table after we barely ate anything because it was not good. read more

This restaurant popped up on my TikTok feed, so I decided to stop by. Overall, a solid experience. Service and food prep were a bit slow and we waited a while for our food, but the staff was very apologetic and attentive throughout. We started with the spicy goat pepper soup--if you like heat, this dish delivers. Honestly, next time I might just order this with a side of white rice and call it a day because the flavor and spice level were perfect. The food is okay, but inconsistent. The jollof rice is very good and well seasoned. I love the spice to it. However, sometimes it's served cold. The chicken suya is underwhelming. It's usually underseasoned and not spicy at all, which is not what you expect with suya. It was also served cold/lukewarm the two times I got it. I usually get the red stew with chicken. It's basically the chicken suya tossed in red sauce. The sauce is good, but they break up the chicken into small pieces that are mostly bones. The red sauce is actually good, however. The first time I got it, it was actually a half chicken, but subsequent times it has been smaller pieces of nothing but bone. And the last time I ordered it, the chicken was very pink and not fully cooked. The drinks are good, but also inconsistent. Depending on who the bartender is, the drinks are overly sweet. It's amazing how three different bartenders can make the same drink and they all taste different. I typically get the Cape Town Margarita or Old Fashioned. The Oba Spritz is also pretty good. Drink prices are typical DC prices these days. The ambiance is fine. I personally prefer coming earlier in the day when it's less crowded. In the evening, it's usually pretty packed with people crowding the bar and entrance while waiting for tables. The hosts typically aren't very friendly or helpful. read more

I had never heard of the continent before but was informed it was the after party spot for BOWS Fest so I of course we had to show up! We walked in and looked for a space to eat and was greeted and given a table immediately. My friend had went to the bar and started looking over the menu so I walked down and joined them. We came with a party of seven and, unfortunately, our experience was just okay. The service was very slow, our food wasn't served hot, and some dishes didn't come out as expected. The drinks took a long time to arrive, and the tables weren't being cleared promptly, which made things feel a bit disorganized. On top of that, it was very loud inside, making it hard to really enjoy each other's company or have a normal conversation. On the positive side, our server was attentive and friendly, which we appreciated, but the overall pace of service and noise level really took away from the experience. Let's start with the positives. There's a parking garage right next to the entrance, so that's convenient. The decor is cute, the bathrooms were clean, the customer service was great, and the drink I ordered "The Continent Margarita" was fantastic! However, I was there for the food. I was highly disappointed in the food. It had ZERO flavor! We ordered the suya spiced wings, empanadas, oxtails, okra stew, and lamp. I really wanted the snapper but sadly they didn't have it. The chicken wings were basic, nothing to write home about. The oxtails were TOUGH!! The red sauce they were 'tossed' in was tasty thankfully because the jollof had no flavor and needed that sauce. How is it even possible for jollof to be flavorless?! But it was literally just red rice. The okra stew had a good starting point but I took it home and added some seasoning. My friend took her lamb home and didn't same thing. We didn't even bother with dessert. I'm a Chef Kwame fan and will support all his endeavors. They were light and flakey stuffed and seasoned well it was not oily or greasy , they were drizzled in some kind of sweet tangy sauce . For my drink I had the oasis of Africa its rum based drink . For my entree I had the whole branzino fish . Now when I got the portion I was expecting the head to be on it . However it was delicious I also anticipated initial spice but when I asked for spice they brought me this paste that tied all those lovely flavors in for me . The jollies f Rice was delicious each country does make it different this is a wonderfully crafted version I've had in some time. I recommend this , I've not been truly impressed by an establishment in some time . I will also say it's quite pricey but you get your moneys worth. My wife and I had the same drinks and entree and the bill was about 254 that included an automatic gratuity for two people and a service fee on top of that. Oh they had a live band and it was really nice they played a mixture of music, I'm so looking forward to going back. It's a beautiful ambiance, very spacious with welcoming interior. Plenty of seating even a seating area for hookah if you like that. There's two bars and a dj some nights. They have many events here so I definitely would say make reservations as early as possible. It can get busy and full pretty quick. Our server Romeo was really nice and attentive. Even the owner Tony came by to check on us and we greatly appreciated that. The food was so good! I ordered a shrimp ceaser salad and the lamb lions with mash potatoes and broccolini. My boyfriend got the red snapper with white rice and jollof rice on the side. They have happy hour every day, I was surprised at the pricing especially being a DC restaurant. Orders continent wings, veggie samosas, and oxtail and white rice. My bf order lamb chop plate. I will say all the food was really good, this time around. Service wise it still needs some work. Also no one came to help her take orders until we made a big deal then someone who we saw walking around came up and started helping her with half the orders. The communication is definitely lacking. Some food servers came bringing our appetizers out when our food was already there...and we already received our appetizers. Then they looked confused when we said we already got it. That happened a few times. Food came out various times for our table so the timing was off. If the communication and service is fixed, it would be better experience. We also tried a few specialty cocktails based on our waitress' recommendations, and they were outstanding. Well balanced, flavorful, and another easy 10 out of 10. For my entrée, I had the lamb chops with jollof rice and vegetables. The jollof rice was delicious, with just the right amount of spice. As someone who regularly orders lamb chops, this was my first time having a mixed reaction. While the seasoning was good, the meat tasted a bit gamey after a few bites, bringing it to about a 6.5 out of 10 for my personal taste. I ordered sparkling water, but it turned out to be flat. After mentioning it to our waitress, she looked into it and let us know the machine was malfunctioning, so we switched our water without any issue. I highly recommend this place for a birthday dinner, dinner with friends, and date night. On Fridays and Saturdays it is packed and reservations are suggested. DO NOT RECOMMEND THE CONTINENT DC! Saturday night (Jan 3) table for 2. We made a reservation but were 12 minutes late. There were plenty empty tables fyi. The host told us sit aside at some table near while he got another party of 5. He came back to address a NEW party of 3 that came.. not even acknowledging us! I went & found someone else who told him seat us right away. It was at 922 pm we were seated (reservation was at 9 pm) We sat and ordered 2 appetizers and side of plantain, 2 drinks . Drinks came but food nowhere to be found. It was to the point the waitress intentionally ignored looking our way until I had to get up & find her. She said she would check on it. There was a table of 2 ladies that sat behind us AFTER US that got food ate, checked out, & left. Another couple seated next to us (sat before us) got food, ate, checked out & even noticed me we didn't get food yet. Mind you, IT WAS ONLY APPETIZERS AND A SIDE! TWO TABLES to the left of us left without ever getting food. At this time it's 1019 pm. I was frustrated ! The menu specifically says "sweet plantain" when it's obvious they threw it in an air fryer or something & was dry and hard! Something quick smh. My date was a stellar guy because I told him not to pay for none of it & send it back! I, now, see why they fell off. I recently visited The Continent DC for my best friend's birthday celebration on Memorial Day. We started with happy hour, and I must say, it was fantastic! The team went above and beyond to accommodate us, even rearranging tables so everyone could be comfortable and enjoy the vibe. The manager even treated my friend to a birthday cocktail, which was a lovely touch. The bartender was attentive, knowledgeable, patient, and kind and we thoroughly enjoyed the appetizers--the suya, samosas, and the wings were all amazing. The pepper sauce that came with the suya was perfect! Very spicy though. The cocktails were refreshing and added to the overall fun atmosphere of the happy hour-- I had the oasis of Africa, veryyyy yummy & reminded me of the tropics. However, our private dinner experience later on was less impressive. The food was just okay, with the red snapper being a bit underwhelming and the sauce lacking flavor. Additionally, the egusi soup we ordered was not quite what we expected, as it tasted more like a different type of Nigerian stew. The dinner service was slow, likely due to being understaffed, and it did affect the overall experience. Overall, I'd give them a 5/10 for dinner-- I have high standards for African restaurants. We were overdue a girls lunch date and this was on her radar for quite some time. This place is grand ok? Huge! Ample seating and lounge space, a nice sized bar. We were sat quickly, especially since the lunch crowd was light. The team took pretty good care of us and were attentive. We had an array of bites and I must say, I was so pleased with their cassava leaf and branzino. My favorite parts of the meal. I've only ever had Sierra Leon cassava leaf and I was impressed. We've ordered from here before, and the consistency in quality keeps us coming back. What We Ordered: -Beef Suya: Flavorful and perfectly spiced. -Chicken Wings: Crispy and delicious. -Moi Moi: Unfortunately, this was a bit dry this time. -Jollof Rice: Absolutely on point. While waiting for my order, l learned more about this vibrant spot. The restaurant features: -Afrobeats Music: -DJ Nights: Fri-Sat 9pm-1pm Sunday Brunch: $55 with bottomless mimosas for an additional $25. A special shoutout to the hostess, Soli, who was exceptional. The Continent in DC is such a vibe, from the elegant decor to the food and the music . I have been here 6 times since they opened and it always hits ! I had the suya with jollof and it was honestly the best suya I've ever had. The lamb chops were super tender and have great flavor. The drinks are also amazing. the espresso martini is one of the best I've had in DC which has coconut creamer , the Cape Town margarita has a cool twist with cinnamon, and the old fashioned (forgot the name in the menu) is very smooth. Late nights, they play great music and the energy is perfect. Plus, the kitchen is open until late which beats other restaurants in the area ! shoutout to Tony, he really looks out and makes sure you're enjoying everything. Definitely recommend! read more

We came on a Thursday night. We were seated right away and there weren't too many people when we arrived at 6pm, it seemed as though you might get away with a walk in. There is a garage right next to the restaurant so if you do have to drive there is no parking issues. Once seated we placed our drink and food orders. It didn't take too much time to come out but we weren't given utensils or napkins, and we never realized none was on the table until our food came out. We had to wait a bit because we couldn't find anyone to alert we had no utensils. We got the branzino and curry chicken. The fish was a pretty big portion and was already cut to remove all bones. I don't think it was anything to rave about but I think maybe we would have to try more of the traditional food. read more
