Today i had the pleasure of dining at this establishment for the first time. Interactions with everyone from host Ronnie, our waiter James, as well as servers was very pleasant. My friend who is a big fan of brunch, went for a more traditional meal which consisted of the steak frites, eggs and hash browns. Because she is not a hash brown fan she ordered a side of grits w gouda cheese since substitutions are not allowed. Oh and whats brunch without a side of bacon, so she says. The grits is something she loved and said she would be back for. They gave a large serving of bacon so she had enough to take home for a late afternoon snack. I didn't come to play and was ready to experience all thing's cajun/creole. I started off with the fried okra 9/10 ( a tad bit salty for me,, but i am also the same person that orders french fries with no salt when i dine out). The sauce that came with the okra calmed down the saltiness for me and i would definitely order it again. I also ordered the corn puppies which i give a 10/10 and the honey butter was the perfect topping. I ordered an extra serving to go because the restaurant isn't close enough for me to just stop by tomorrow. But i knew from the first bite, i wanted to have it again and so i ordered it with a to go order of gumbo.. For my entree i ordered the Alligator and my stomach was not mad. It was covered with a glazed sauce, had sliced jalapeños and was on top of a bed a rice; good balance of sweet and spicy. I could also eat this every day but there are so many other things i just have to try. I have already put a date on our calendar to come back for the po boy and the blackened fish which were highly recommended by James and Richard. Cant end my review without speaking about dessert. I knew i was going to get beignets but when James recommended pairing them with the chocolate mousse to dip them in. I just thought i am doing way too much, but how could i say no now because everything James had recommended thus far including our alcoholic beverages were great. So we order the beignets and chocolate mouse and now i have to really think about how serious i am about this weight loss journey i am on. Ill revisit the weight-loss in September, because ill be back to Catahoula in August, and I'm certain more than once. I was sending a text message to colleague to organize a happy hour outing after work before i could even get out the door. Thank you for an amazing dining experience. Came to Catahoula with a friend because I had to see what the hype was about, and whew...they did not disappoint. Let's start with the drinks. Their margarita cocktail was so good, and the fact that it's on happy hour made it even better. I also tried one of the gin cocktails and that was a hit too. We came during Oyster Week, so they had a bunch of different oysters to choose from. I went with the charbroiled oysters and they were packed with flavor. Definitely don't skip those. We also started with the gumbo and that was amazing too. My friend got the catfish with fries, and that plate was huge. Everything on it was seasoned well and all the garnishes tied it together. I ordered the chicken stew...I know there's a French name for it but I can't remember it. All I know is it was absolutely worth ordering. Honestly, every single thing that hit our table was good. Navy Yard really needed a spot like this. There are plenty of seafood places around, but Catahoula brings that Creole and Cajun flavor that was missing from the area, and I'm so glad it's here. The drinks understood the assignment. The beignets didn't even make it home. After hearing about Catahoula from both social media and coworkers, I finally decided it was time to see what the hype was about. I made a reservation for an adult night out and was able to choose between indoor and outdoor seating. With the weather being a little unpredictable, I opted for the dining room. We arrived a little early and had a short wait for our table, which was completely fine. Once we sat down, we ordered drinks and... WHEW. Those drinks were GOOD. Like, "okay, we're off to a great start" good. We started with a dozen oysters and the white cheddar jalapeño biscuits with pepper jelly. Both were delicious. The oysters tasted fresh, and the biscuits were definitely one of the highlights of the meal. That pepper jelly was the perfect touch. For our entrees, I went with the seafood boil and added lobster, while my dinner partner ordered the alligator. Both dishes were tasty, although he did feel like the alligator portion was a little small. Even with the rice, he still felt like he could have used a little more meat. Now, we were FULL. But there was no way I was leaving a New Orleans inspired spot without trying the beignets. We ordered some to go, and let me tell you... those things were NEVER making it home. We were eating them before we even made it to the truck. Overall, Catahoula delivered a really good experience. The drinks were excellent, the food was good, and the hospitality was probably my favorite part. From the host to our server to the front of house manager, everyone was warm, attentive and genuinely welcoming. My only real critiques? The seafood boil could have been seasoned a little more, and the alligator portion could have been more generous. Would I go back? Absolutely. I could especially see myself coming back for happy hour. Being right across from Nationals Park makes Catahoula a pretty convenient spot for drinks and food before or after a game. 4.5/5 for me. I had to check out the new restaurant on the block! I used to live in New Orleans so I had very high expectations for a place inspired by New Orleans cuisine and overall style. They did a great job with the space. It's beautiful, warm with plenty of character. We went during the week so it wasn't too crowded. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. There aren't any TVs inside but they do have some out side if you want to catch a game. The service was pretty good. We visited within the first few weeks of the restaurant opening, so a lot of the staff were still learning and adapting but everything went fairly well overall. Now the food! We tried a few items: the okra, oysters, shrimp po boy, heritage corn guppies and of course had to wrap up the meal with beignets. My friend really enjoyed the oysters. I thought the okra and the shrimp po boy were okay but wasn't the biggest fan of the guppies. The beignets though, were pretty good! The drinks were pretty good too. I had the Hurricane which was strong and tasty and i would definitely order it again. Overall it was a solid experience. I would come back to try other items on the menu and I would definitely return for drinks and beignets. One thing I wish they had was a daiquiri machine. I came here to join friends watching the world cup. The original plan was to go to solace but they were packed do we went here instead got their version of the hurricane and it was good. See picture. Catahoula is a recently opened restaurant with New Orleans-inspired cuisine right on the waterfront in Navy yard. It has a great patio with views of the Anacostia River, and also another patio with TVs. I met up with a friend here for dinner and was seated promptly when I arrived. We tried a number of dishes and cocktails. The drinks were my favorite, followed by the thrice baked potato. I started with the Oysters Evangeline, and I thought this was just okay. I probably wouldn't order this again as there are much better and cheaper options in DC. I also had the barbecue shrimp for my main dish. I wouldn't say this reminds me of what I've had in New Orleans, but it was a solid dish. We also ordered the shrimp po boy, corn guppies, and beignets. As a lover of all things creole, I chose this restaurant for dinner with a bit of skepticism LOL From the Hostess to the server to the manager, the staff was very hospitable and accommodating . I ordered a Grenade, a cup of Gumbo and the boil. I will say that this dining experience is the CLOSEST that ai have found to eating in NAWLINS. I didn't order any Oysters however all the rest of our food was delicious. The flavor was on point and the service matched. I really enjoyed the food, the blackened catfish po boy was huge and very tasty, a little salty but overall very good. I completely LOVED the fries, order them!! They are cooked in beef tallow and I could not stop eating them. The beignets were also so fluffy and pillowy and dusted heavily in powered sugar. The only star I took off was for the service. When we first entered the service was phenomenal and the staff was so nice. However after sitting there for a while, it seemed like we were kind of ignored. We also noticed that the server offered the table next to us complimentary chocolate mousse with their beignets and it hadn't been offered to us, when asked, the server said the manager selects who should receive the complimentary mousse which I feel like if offered to one table it should be offered to everyone. I ordered the blackened catfish po' boy and my wife ordered the chicken Caesar salad, and we got an order of fries to share. The blackened catfish po' boy may have been one of the best sandwiches I have had. The catfish was cooked perfectly with a nice flavor, and the roll and toppings were very fresh. I waited before writing this review because I wanted to make sure I wasn't simply reacting out of frustration. After reflecting on it, I still find the way this restaurant handled a surprise birthday party I planned incredibly inconsiderate. For approximately a month, I communicated with them by **email, text, phone, and in person** about hosting 15-20 people in a very specific area of their upstairs deck. They quoted approximately a $1,000 minimum to reserve it for two hours, but repeatedly told me that alternatively, I could arrive around 5 p.m. and try to secure it first come, first served. I even emailed them several days before the party confirming that this was exactly what I planned to do. I arrived around **4:45 p.m.**, well before my guests, specifically to follow their guidance. Only then was I told that the exact area I had been discussing with them for a month had already been reserved. To be clear: **I am not upset that someone reserved the space.** I understood that without paying the minimum, it wasn't guaranteed. What I find unacceptable is that they knew the space was no longer available first come, first served, knew I was planning a 15-20 person surprise party, and still couldn't extend the basic courtesy of telling me, even when I emailed them days beforehand. Instead, they withheld information that would have allowed me to make other arrangements, leaving me to sit alone for nearly an hour holding whatever tables I could find elsewhere on the deck and hoping there would be enough room when everyone arrived. Thankfully, the party worked out. But that was luck, not good hospitality. What bothered me most wasn't losing the space, it was the complete lack of consideration, communication, or even a meaningful apology. If you're planning a group event here, I would not rely on their guidance. After a month of communication, apparently a one-sentence heads-up was too much to ask. read more

Loved our happy hour at Catahoula tonight! Runs until 6 pm, and the deals, drinks, and food were all excellent. We were so excited to try spot out, and it didn't disappoint. Catahoula, the new Cajun/Creole restaurant in Navy Yard, received a 3 out of 10 from me. I started with the French 75, but unfortunately, their Hand Grenande machine was broken upon opening. Next, I ordered the Oyster Evangeline, which the server described as the same as the oyster Rockefeller in Louisiana. However, it tasted more like tomato sauce on top of baby oysters. I also ordered BBQ shrimp, which were overcooked and the sauce was way too thick. As we know, BBQ shrimp in Louisiana doesn't use real BBQ sauce. We then ordered gumbo and sent it back. I've never sent food back before, but it tasted like the roux had nothing but tomato paste in it. My friend ordered the hurricane drink, which was okay. I tasted the crawfish from the next table because it was $55. They tasted like crawfish from Up North that's full of butter in a bag. So glad I didn't order it myself. We ended our meal with a Shrimp poboy and Sausage poboy. They were the best things on the menu. Probably like a 7 out of 10 because the shrimp aren't Gulf-sized. The twice-baked potato was also good. They were out of beignets as well. I was overall disappointed because I'm from Louisiana. I went for happy hour at the bar. I was excited to try this place since it's relatively new in the Navy Yard. I also thought Ronnie, the outdoor host, had great energy l. Unfortunately, the energy ended there. I expect an engaging experience while sitting at the bar, especially for a place that claims to be upscale. Bartender was laisse faire, minimal interactions with customers, no engagement. I had the lemonade cocktail, gumbo, and beef sliders... all on happy hour. I find that your happy hour specials signal feature aspects of your restaurant. The food was fine. The gumbo had good flavor: however, it was room temp and there was a film on the top that indicated to me it sat on the counter for a while before being served. I took my boyfriend out for Father's Day and we had a wonderful experience. The host seated us even though they weren't actually open yet. Our server Joe was amazing! He checked on us throughout the whole dining experience. There was an issue with my lobster étouffée and Joe and the manager Jordan handled it perfectly. Recently tried this place on a Saturday night - beautiful weather and wanted a patio. The host was so nice and friendly and the restaurant itself it well decorated. We ordered a few appetizers and entrees and they fell short. The oysters were great but the main portions were small. The fried okra had incredibly thick batter and very mediocre seasoning. Our server also forgot to include the dipping sauce with the okra. We also ordered the beignets which he told us come with 6 pieces, and only 5 came out. Being a Cajun, I was SO excited to try this place! We did not have reservations so opted for the chef's table at the recommendation of the server near the front. Our water glasses were filled immediately, but then we sat for over 10 minutes without being served, given a menu or even acknowledged by any staff members, despite several people making eye contact with us as they walked by. After watching other patrons (likely with reservations) get seated with menus and staff attention right away, we decided to try and make a reservation online and walked out. Several staff watched us leave, one even giving a silent head nod in our direction. Not one person asked why we were leaving or if they could do anything to help. We got a seafood boil ( it wasn't on the menu but we asked our server and she helped us out; it came with Crab legs, shrimp, crawfish, potatoes, corn, and mushrooms), one shrimp and one oyster "poor" boy, beignets, with a hand grenade, daiquiri, Bourbon Cherry lemonade, and hurricane. The drinks were really good and the food was a good step in the right direction for DC restaurants' take on Louisiana food, where flavor and taste are often toned down for presentation and experience. Service was amazing! Our server Rosie was extremely helpful and gave detailed explanations that helped our choices. We ordered some fries and she was sure to explain how they make their fries so that we could be sure to order the vegetarian fries. She also came and checked on us numerous times while offering great spirit and humor to everyone in our section. The atmosphere was also really well done.
