My kids informed me when they were leaving for the big world outside that everything in the house should stay put, meaning I was not to throw or misplace their things. I didn't like the look in their eyes when they said that. But OK it's nobody's fault but mine because, as the Godfather Don Corleone explained , "I have a sentimental weakness for my children and I spoil them as you can see." In my earlier life I had failed as a packrat, instead preferring with each change of residence to send stuff to either Goodwill or the dump. So my kids needn't worry about their keepersakes. I'm unlikely to get rid of anything from my years as their mr family guy, being that for the most part their stuff is what little i have to remind me today of whatever it was I did before that. Not much to show for some 20 years as an itinerant... uh, itinerant. I don't learn from experience, just hope to get better results by repeating the same mistakes over and over and over and... which according to Einstein is the essence of insanity, but wtf did he know. I don't know either, but in my case it's a moot point anyway, at least according to the kind folks in Bellevue's 9.39 ward many years ago in nyc. But being much improved now, I have initiative: wake up, smell the coffee, put on a clean white shirt, get a haircut, shape up/ship out and similar happy horsesht, to wit: I was going to organize things for such day that I blow a fuse or something worse, and things will be in order. To make this happen I would pack everything in some nice plastic boxes, just like the winners in this world. Which is how I happened to visit the Container Store for the first time in my disorderly life. It's a bit intimidating to enter this place. There are so many different kinds of boxes, giving the sense that real people pack things up, neat and tidy in hermetically sealed, moisture impermeable, plastic storage boxes built for the ages. All this is an essential part of the good life. OK, but I just wanted something cheap, that wouldn't turn to dust like my old cardboard wine boxes have done after 50 years. Those are nice, free and simple to use with no selection to make, being that they're all the same size. Plus, you aren't likely to overload cardboard wine boxes when you've saving books or papers. Do that with a larger box and they're quite impossible to move without regretting it next morning getting out of bed. To keep on the sunny side of life, as I'm sure I almost always do, my approach is: can't figure how to solve your problem then ignore the problem. Is the Container Store where all my problems can be solved with the right plastic storage box? Really? Fortunately I did find just the right boxes, in the exact right sizes... the only question was what did they cost? It was my luck that the items I wanted had no prices anywhere, not on the shelf nor the items themselves, nor some sort of sandwich board on the pile in the middle of the store. I noticed this detail was missing on other items as well. Perhaps find someone to explain the pricing, but it won't be in a mere five minutes as store personnel are few in number. So I bought what I wanted having no idea what the total cost would be. But I knew that to be a minor issue with these boxes. The problem for me will be actually using them. read more

It's never a good sign when the staff lie to you over the phone. I placed an online order for pickup today and received an email that it was ready for pick up. I get to the location, park, and click "I'm here" on the email. Immediately after doing this, I stand outside of my car facing the entrance so that it would be easier to see me. Within a minute I receive another email saying thank you for picking up your order. I proceed to wait for 22 minutes after that with no signs of anyone with my items. I watch a man come out and give some items to a woman in another car and a woman come out and stand in the doorway with a small item that fits in her hand looking for another customer during this time. Finally I call the number provided in the email for an update, but the only extension that it gives you is to schedule an appt. I finally select that extension and let the woman on the phone know that I just wanted to make sure my items weren't given to someone else because I've been sitting here for a little over 20 min. She then asks me for my name and says, "oh they're sitting right here. They came outside and you weren't there". I said that I've been here the whole time standing outside of my car and didn't see anyone come out with my items. She then rudely says, "well what car do you have?" I let her and she rudely again says, "well I don't see that". I then tell her that I'm waving my arm, does she see me now? To which she says, "oh, well we'll be right out". I'm assuming it's the same middle aged woman with grayish hair that I was speaking on the phone with who came out, because as I'm grabbing my items from her, I say thank you two separate times and she didn't even say anything back. Not a "you're welcome", "sorry for the delay" or "have a nice day". The attitude and direct lies really weren't necessary for 2pm on Thursday. I thought I was coming at a low traffic time, but apparently not. read more

It really breaks my heart actually not really lol. To review people give bad reviews and the experiences that they came across. Maybe it's luck of the draw? Who knows. I don't come here enough to really feel like I've experience bad service. I come here at least 2-3 times a month to grab some kitchen essentials. Services and the staff as always been so kind and extremely helpful to me. Store is always clean well kept and organizes. They don't always have what I come in for but staff members always seem to be able to find something better or order it online for me. read more

A great selection of containers, bins, etc however their price range is up there $$$. You can find the same pantry containers, filling cabinets etc they carry in Costco, Target, and Ikea, and Stapes for 3/4 if not half the price. read more

Firstly, I'd like to say Sunni, one of the managers I spoke with is cool. She was helpful and prompt. Backstory is my wife and I are looking to update our closet. Sunni helped us figure out the design and materials. Today I go in to start buying the parts. I called in advanced to see what was needed. Spoke to someone named Gregory. I go into the store, waited to talk with someone, she wasn't that helpful (didnt get her name either), and she said she would go look for him and proceeds to disappear. Then 30 minutes later another sales associate (also dont know the name) asks if I needed help, said I was looking for Gregory, only to find out he was "busy". Someone, who I am guessing was someone else from the same department, said he would help me after he finishes up with current client, also then disappears. When I see him next, he was helping another client, finishes up with them, and goes help the check out line. After a whole year and a half of not shopping in the store, I came back in today for specific items. I had to say I was a little disappointed that they carried less stuff than they used to in the gift wrapping/ packaging/ boxes areas, but I could understand that we are still living through the pandemic so they might not have everything I used to get from here. I managed to find some replacements with the help of their staff members who actually reached out and led me to where to find those items because I may have seemed lost. I know that COVID makes it difficult for everyone, but The Container Store seems to have been understaffed and not adapted to meet the demand for curbside pick up. We ordered something online, waited two weeks for it to arrive, parked in the designated spot, called, and got a recording. I went inside and found no pickup area, but a line to check out that stretched from the front to the back of the store. Few people were socially distancing. I looked for someone to assist me and finally found a worker who found another. He retrieved my order. I was grateful for his help. People were not wearing masks or we're wearing them incorrectly. I felt bad for the employees having put up with so many people and those circumstances, but I was relieved to get out! read more

This is the BEST store. A woman with blond hair went w-a-y out of her way to help me find some white laquor (sp?) boxes; she found some for me at the Palo Alto Store. So appreciated her help and the time she took to help me. Then, at checkout the guy was very nice, and helpful. Wanted to buy some extra "recycle-type" bags in the pink/white/blue, but he had to direct me to the new model in two sizes in blue. So, I bought one and was on my way out. He said "oh, you don't want to take that out with you" -- and I was perplexed. and said, why? So, then he took the blue recycle bag from me and pointed out the spider crawling around in the outer bottom folds....and then took the bag, walked outside, and FREED THE SPIDER. -- So, I said to him, what is your name? He said, Carelton (apologies if I am spelling his name incorrectly). I said, well, Carelton, you give EXCELLENT customer service and because you freed the spider outside I am going on yelp to inform people about you and this great store -- and if you had smashed the spider, I would never have come back to this store again ever. Looking for a special bottle to share with friends as I make my own Christmas presents filled with liquid sweetness. My phone rings, I'm in the middle of errands and I get a panic call from my girlfriend that I need to cross the Bay to feed and bring her dog, then go to pick her up in a crowded area of SF at commute hour. Getting stressed I go to my car and finish my day. I get home, start my project, look around and no bottles. So I think back. At the store I didn't use a cart so I wouldn't have left them in one. And they weren't in the car. Only the bags from other shopping. So before the store closed my girlfriend and I went back to the store and helped looked for the bag. Enter Sheila. Gracious, sincere, and totally believing my story. We looked. Nothing. So We had to buy the items again, but there was no regret, I needed them. This is where Sheila joins us. She was going to check security cam in the morning and tell us what happened. I thought the next customer might have thought it was theirs and left with them. Sheila made us feel important, she empathized, and promised to follow up. Her words were sincere. We had no doubt. We got to my place and returned to my project. I looked over to my big chair where I had put the other bags, and behold. Peeking out of one of my other bags was the word "CONTAINER" on the top of an inner bag, barely peeking out the top. Then I remembered. I had placed it inside a larger bag to hide Christmas gifts I had gotten for my girlfriend earlier. Since she was with me I didn't want her to see them. AND I FORGOT. Mystery solved. Sheila saved a little part of my Christmas. And I would like to mention that every staff member that helped was sympathetic and helpful. Great experience with these guys! I ordered about 50 or so plastic bins. Mostly enormous 30 gallon bins and some mid sized bins. Huge pain to collect all that inventory and shove it into two cars. The ladies at the register were so friendly and helpful. The guys in the back were awesome and did all the heavy lifting with a great attitude. It was my first experience at Container Store but definitely not my last, I've already placed another large order... for delivery this time! :) Special call out to Andrew who was running around making my order possible!!! read more

I worked with Sunni, the custom spaces sales manager. When I arrived she told me they were short staffed and we may experience a disruption or two during our appointment. Sunni skillfully handled my design requests and asked for twenty minutes to implement and draw out what we had discussed and what I had shown her. She knocked it out of the park! I got two full closets designed to my liking, with thoughtful add-ons by Sunni and I was out of there in under an hour. Taking delivery in a little over two weeks and installation a week or so later. I've worked with several custom closet companies over the year and they have a 4-8 month turnaround for a custom build. The Elfa systems are not as intricate but for the cost (and I saved 35% because of the promotion) I would take it everyday! read more

I have to give a shout out to Kenny at the Container Store at Corte Madera. He loaded our car with a heavy purchase. Then spent time helping us look for my keys that I dropped somewhere in my car. He helped us empty my car entirely -- no keys! This went on for a long time until Kenny had to return to the store and I headed to the mall security office. (Also kind and friendly folks.) I finally found the keys after the 10th time of looking in the folds of the huge Container Store bag for the tenth time by all 3 of us. Kenny's calm and encouragement decreased my frustration level to the point where I could think clearly and reason through my steps to the retrieval of my keys. There are good selfless people out the like Kenny who need to be celebrated. read more

The container store in Marin, seems to be out of what i need when i go there. The one in San Jose,on Santana Row, seems better stocked. All in all it seems like an okay store but the concept to me is that people have too much stuff and should donate it to the less fortunate instead of trying to figure out how to organize everything so that it will fit in there house. It can cause mold issues when you have too much stuff also. So as you can see this is not my go to store for everything. read more

I've been a little slow lately. Just dealing with life in general......you know, of the loser variety. My last roommate was a liar. My ex was a liar. In fact, most of my bad relationships ended because I had to dump the liar, who was so busy trumping themselves up just to continue the dating process. What does not help, is my listening to NPR reruns while typing my review: Radio Lab: Into the Brain of a Liar. My review and who do I trust when it comes to holding a good pair of high heels? The Container store has consistently given me a good return for my dollars spent here. Quality is a virtue here, no liars present. It is slightly more on the expensive side but they carry a wide range of products that cover the price spectrum. In addition to a good variety I'm usually impressed with how everything is perfectly arranged, categorized and spaced. Kudos to the person(s) who put that room together. I had to choose between a $12.99 clearance over-the-door shoe holder against a $39.99 item. The quality of course differed, but ultimately, the cheaper one would do the job just the same. I also walked out with a $1.99 paper document plastic zip folder. Keeps water and other drizzle we've been experiencing in SF at bay and away from important documents. I was also interested in the very trendy and vibrant reusable shopping bags located near the entrance. But at $8.99 a bag, I'll think more about the purchase. They would, however, be a very cute addition to someone's birthday gift. Hmmmm. In addition to the pretty immaculate storeroom and staff that meander through the aisles ensuring you are finding the right items, I was even more pleasantly surprised at the check out. Chipper and smiley. Now that is the way to end a good shopping spree. Now it was off to Barnes & Noble for some books and a cup of coffee. I'm glad we have one of these stores in our area. Comes in handy more times than not for both personal needs and for business. Everyone here seems well trained and willing to help you find what you're looking for. I wouldn't say however that this store is super well organized. It's not always obvious where a particular item is located, even when you're in the section it should be. Overall, it's worth going here for certain items. The one thing that's unfortunate is that they carry a lot of junky, unnecessary items that break easily and honestly just don't need to exist (far too many plastic items meant for a single use in some cases). It would be great if The Container Store was more environmentally conscious. I've see the pallets of inventory arrive out front several times, all wrapped in mountains of plastic only to reveal already plastic wrapped boxes within boxes. So much unnecessary waste. I truly hope they get their act together. read more

I went into get some storage and filing boxes. All eight items I chose were on sale. None of the sale prices came up at the cash register. When I was quickly looking them up on my phone to show him they are on sale, he asked me to step aside so he could help another customer. Seemed irritated with me for taking up his time. He apologized to the next lady for her having to wait. But no apology to me for having all their pricing wrong and causing me to have to look it up. I recommend you check carefully at check out so you get the sale price you have coming to you. I won't go back to this location. read more

I called to ask if they have something I am looking for in stock (since the line to get in is about an hour on a good day). Thought they were a great bunch minus the the woman in the back and the extended waits during Elfa season. Mthey need to extend it and allow us to answer some of our own questions - like are all my Knick knacks represented on this billing page? Also, we notice the sweeping price fluctuations week over week in this season and the fact that most book shelves are sold with a basic disclaimer "may not hold books" disappointed me. The biggest disappointment is the stick depletion at the end of ELFA Season when you come to buy they have nothing you want. I was a tad frustrated with inventory and process. Oh well. read more

Worst mistake I made on my new home. I used Elfa shelving ten years ago and was happy with the product so I went to Corte Madera Container Store to buy closets for a home I am remodeling. What a mess of confusion and disorganization. From having a pile of undentifiable poles, bars and shelves dumped in my garage to resigning myself to the fact my contractor nor I would be able to identify what when where, I had an installer do the project. One closet was completely misfitted so I have to return it (of course, for the thousand dollar installation fee, I get $100 per returned closet refunded. Not to mention, the master closet- identical to the beautiful sample in the store has mismatched drawers that don't close. After the numerous hours I spent planning this project, I am now buying a much less expensive product and having my contractor install it. I am on hold waiting for the customer service rep to try to get someone to my home to rehang them. I wish I had saved my time and money - the sales seem a good deal but this has been a costly mistake for me. I wish I had used any of the other numerous closet companies. Penny wise - pound foolish. Oh, and if management bothers to read this, I definitely want to mention Laura's arrogant and condescending behavior. Goes a long way in affecting customer satisfaction. read more

The people working here are unbelievably rude. I have had folks actually HANG UP on me. I have also had check-out clerks tell me that adjusting pricing sounded like "a waste of their time" (me saving money is certainly not a waste of MY time - and I'm the customer!). One time, I was waiting in line and the person in front of me had quite a complicated order so I nicely asked another clerk if she could help me and her response was, coldly, "fine." It seems the Container Store employees believe their time is much more valuable than their customers and that shows. On top of that, the online shopping fulfillment times are a joke. I absolutely hate coming here and do so as little as humanly possible. If not for a discount I had after moving into our new home, I would certainly have shopped elsewhere. read more

There are 2 Magical Elfa closet designers in this store that are a MUST to work with, their names are, KEN and JERI! Where other Elfa designers in different Container Stores say, "no this can't be done," KEN and JERI say, "YES!" They make your closet dreams come true!! They spent at least 60 minutes + helping me design for my friend Phoebe, with such care for detail, patience and fun, that we happily managed to get everything she wanted ( and then some) into a very small space of 42Lx39wx90h. read more

It's a given that The Container Store is on the pricey side, compared to, oh, Ikea I guess....there is some crossover in merchandise, maybe more than a little. It's also a given that Ikea is inherently evil (if you have any doubt Google the Economist article from 5/11/06). Yeah, so, get to the point....the point is, yesterday I woke up realizing I didn't want to rewrap my recently washed 24 wine glasses in tissue paper and transport them in a cardboard box with egg crates. It works and nothing gets broken but what a pain. I decided The Container Store would have what I needed and they had options ranging from $6.99 (a cardboard box with a clever lid and separations for the glasses or those tchotckes you are moving) to a $24.99 damask covered stemware storage unit, with handles thank you very much. Naturally I had to get 2 of the $24.99 options since everything's better with damask. And then I had to get 2 wine bottle carrier/storage thingies made of recycled plastic at $19.99 ea. And then I had to get a keychain/flashlight, an odor eater for my trunk and some for the kitchen garbage and......well, you know.....they have awesome impulse buy items @ the register. Oh, I'm docking a star b/c on their website nothing came up when I searched for Wine Glasses. I had to call the store to determine the correct verbiage is Stemware. That's stupid. read more

Went there today to buy parts for an Elfa set (I found in a junk store). I dealt with two different ladies. Both of them were very helpful and made the effort to "go into the backroom" to find the parts I needed. Such a pleasant experience, compared to most chains that really can't be bothered - if more stores would employ ladies like this, then I think more people would actually go to their stores and would probably buy more.
