Sometimes I get overwhelmed. The cords to my hair dryer and curling iron are tangled, my purse is full of receipts and candy wrappers, and outlook calendar has four overlapping appointments. So I go to the Container Store. A lot of times I don't even buy anything, I just roam around, marveling at how...how contained everything is. It's like something is trying to remind me to slow down, and put things in their place. Do you need an multi-compartment organizer for your dishwashing detergents? Got it. I really dig the concept of the Container Store. As a child who grew up with a parent who is hyperorganized (filing cabinets, plastic bins, and all), I got some OCD-style organization tendencies, and the first time I walked into the Container Store I'm pretty sure I heard angels sing. The problems occur once you start to look around. As others have said, the quality of the products here is notably lacking. My mother never used anything other than Rubbermaid bins and cheap filing cabinets from Office Max to do her organizing. A lot of the more office and limited space-oriented items here look like fancy versions of said Rubbermaid bins, but they cost at least twice as much. As others have complained, there's a huge selection of items, but it's often hard to find what you're looking for. I went in looking for a small set of shelves to put above my desk. There was only a small selection of hanging shelves. Most were ugly, and the ones the were small enough to fit my needs were either cheap and tacky or ridiculously expensive. If I had a ton of money, I would definitely invest in some of the closet shelving units, as well as a number of other things in this store. As it stands, I'll continue to satisfy my compulsive need to organize in the Rubbermaid aisle at Wal-Mart. read more

Now, I would normally never want to miss a chance to wander around the store, but I happened to be researching for shoe boxes and the website had them on sale PLUS there was an Oprah coupon for 25% off your order if you placed it by the end of the day. Check. Saved money, went into store, picked up purchased, happy. Oh yeah, and then there was the part where I ended up buying more stuff in addition to what I ordered. online, but whatever. Shortly after moving into my new apartment, I found myself in quite the bind, curled up in the corner, traumatized, having been ganged up on by the boxes that took over my living room. You know, it never seems as if you have that much stuff until you have to pack/unpack it. Then it seems like it never ends. I needed structure, I needed organization, I needed mounted wall shelving! Well, I didn't NEED mounted wall shelving, but it's a nifty thing to have! So I do have to give The Container Store its props for bringing some order back to my chaos. Though I have to say, it's a bit pricey. I have a 2nd large walk in closet in dire need of remodeling, but I think I'll venture out to a more reasonable store like Ikea for that project. Every employee always appears to be #1 in a great mood and #2 ready to help. I can spend hours browsing, but with their helpful suggestions and ideas - it is typically a 15 min trip. It is pretty expensive, but if you need a container for something special - its the place to go. Love Container Store. My neat freak/OCD kicks up in high gear when I am at this store. I have grown up with the Container Store. My parents bought me Elfa closet storage when I was in high school that I continue to use till this day. The Container Store staff does a great job helping you choose a custom Elfa shelving system. During college, I bought another set of Elfa platinum shelving to organize books. Elfa shelving systems are not cheap but the Container Store has an annual sale. You can literally find a container/box/cube/tray to store anything. I am also a big fan of their acrylic bathroom & cosmetics organizers. Some of the plastic & acrylic storage boxes are priced competitively with Target and Walmart. However, I do recommend comparing the prices at your local Target with the prices on the Container Store website before heading out. Can't wait to start my next organizing project. I'm an organization junkie. I love shelves and containers and canvas boxes.. oh my! I recently ordered a couple of shoe storage boxes online and opted for the in store pick up option. I guess it's a good option if you're looking for something uber specific and in a rare quantity. I, however, was only looking to pick up a couple shoe storage boxes. I walked into the store and pressed the button, only to have to wait some more and be greeted by someone who didn't seem very enthused. These boxes were not for myself, so I opened the bag to re-count them to make sure the correct number was inside, only to be met with a snarky "we double check it for you so you don't come back". ...what? My new favorite store! Everything is so organized and pretty :) The staff was extremely helpful and accommodating. I asked one of the workers where I can find small plastic drawers. He was in the middle of looking up stuff for other customers but told me he'd help me directly after he was done. I was in sort of a rush so I told him I would just take the item I had in my hands. He agreed and went upon his business. He spotted me walking by a few minutes later and informed me I should check the bath section. I love to organize stuff so this place is "fun"! Storage, alright (calming down now), if you are looking for a specific type container for something special, this is a great place.They have special storage/display cases for collectibles. If you are looking for certain colors, they have a great assortment.Odd shape or small size, probably here. However if you are doing something like spring cleaning, and or need a lot of storage containers you would do better to go to some place like Bed Bath and Beyond or Linens and Things. They have better prices and yet still more decorative than what you might find at Walmart. Personally I like Ikea the best.They have creative useful stuff (including containers) at really good prices. For example: I just got a set of chrome "boxes" with lids and little handles and slots for labels,well made, for just 6.99 for 2 (8x13). These would have been at least twice that at the Container Store. I got some boxes for cubical shelves, with lids (zippered) cloth covered,12x11x16 for 4.99 each. Something similar was more at Target. The only problem at Ikea, in looking for storage, isn't choices, it's finding where the stuff is at.They have some here, some there- so you have to look around. read more

I have a love hate relationship with this place. I used to work there, but was dismissed for not towing the party line. Was it a good place to work? Yes. I got insurance when I worked part time and a 40% discount. I love the products and I enjoyed helping people solve their organizational challenges. Designing storage systems with elfa was nirvana. It is a good product that is easy to use and install. It also keeps improving with time. I continue to shop there even though I was terminated. I use elfa systems all over my house. I also like the selection of storage boxes, trash cans and hangers. I know the products and where they are located which makes patronizing the store quick and easy. The return policy is exceedingly generous. Satisfaction is key. Employees are empowered to make an unhappy customer happy by providing a discount, refund, gift card etc. As an employee, I found this extremely "empowering" bc it prevented unpleasantness and hassles and saved time. Customers appreciated it as well. Employee knowledge of the vast inventory and the ability to use it creatively to solve problems can be spotty. Look for sales people whose aprons and t-shirts are faded bc it is an indication that they have worked there a long time and will really know the products! If you don't get a satisfactory answer initially, find other employees who might know more. FYI - the annual elfa sale 30% off starts 12/24 and goes through President's weekend. The annual 25% off shelving sale, which includes shelving components of elfa, starts around Labor day and ends around Halloween. My biggest beef is that they have 8 cash registers, yet there are usually only 2-4 in service and, as a result, there is always a long line and a long wait when checking out. Is it set up that way so you have to look at all of the impulse items stocked around the registers? Perhaps. My second beef is with parking. People who are not patronizing the Container Store or Crate and Barrel or Land of Nod, park there to shop at the stores across North Avenue. There has to be a better way to regulate the parking - especially during busy periods. It just doesn't work. The store is open until 9pm 6 days a week. The best time to shop is on a Saturday night. Not convenient, but worth it. Last, it is expensive. The profit margins are high. However, if a product malfunctions or is unsatisfactory, you can take it back. 99% of the time you can be compensated for a legitimate gripe. Anecdote: A woman tried to return a pantry organizer that she had used for 3 years because she was moving and it didn't fit in her new apartment...that return was rejected. It was well-used as indicated by the caked-on food... In sum: 3 stars total - one each for good customer service, elfa and generous return policy. The store loses a total of two stars for long check out times, crappy parking situation and expensive products. Hope this helps read more

We apparently got ours at a very busy time and we did have to wait a few weeks for the closet to be installed. But overall it was a great experience! read more

Love this place, if you have OCD this is your heaven. They have an organizational item for every item and area of your home you can think of. Pricing is relatively reasonable for most products, but they also have $200 garbage cans (which, come on, nobody ever needs). The reason for 3 stars is: while my ability to instantly cure OCD induced anxiety just by entering the store, for the love of god the checkout process is brutal. Avoid this place during the evening on the weekdays and Saturday/Sunday if you can. While I always encounter great clerks at the counter, the container store hammers in signing up for their perks program. Thus, adding extra time to the checkout process. There is no other place that understands my need to have everything in its' right place better than The Container Store. Since I'm a crafter, I need storage that will fit my supplies and my products. Sure, the prices here can get a little outrageous, but it's product you can't find in the same place, especially with the inventory they have here, anywhere else. I love their photo boxes which are $7.99 apiece, but they are totally worth it and come in bright, fun, colors. Also to note, the customer service is, hands down, some of the best I have seen in action. The one downside is when I can't find someone, most of their employees are already helping other customers. read more

I am like a kid in a candy store here. I came here for one item, and stayed for about 45 minutes. They have containers for everything and so many fun little trinkets to distract you. The prices are a bit higher for items you could probably find at walmart for cheaper, but it truly is a one stop shop for everything organizing related. I wanted to like the Container Store, but I don't. I couldn't find a trash can that would fit in my space. I couldn't find wire bins for gloves and hats and things that would fit in my hall closet. I couldn't find a decent spice rack or flatware organizer. I couldn't find underbed storage containers I like better than the cheap rubbermaid ones I currently have. I couldn't find the right length glass shelves. I couldn't find a simple chrome etagere. I couldn't find anything I went in with a list for. Plus, I really don't think anyone works here except in the Elfa department and the cash registers. What is that about? If I want a store where no one's arond to help me and they don't have what they want, I'll go to the Restoration Hardware next door. read more

I love the Container Store, but could not find the right box I was looking for. I was in search of a presentation type of a box for a normal sized 3-ring binder. All they had (that were close) were 8.5 x 11 and then a larger box that looked like a shirt box you get clothes in from g'ma for xmas. I did find some things I needed for my binder though. I looked at the filing cabinets while I was there. I've been wanting a 2-drawer metal, locking cabinet. They have some really great ones, but all over $150. I'll probably go to Office Depot or somewhere to find one cheaper. That isle with all of the tiny, plastic containers still blows my mind though. It makes me want to start some sort of collection. I love this store for the primary reason that I have a lot of crap. When you have a lot of crap, you definitely need someone to help you organize it. The staff there is great and very, very helpful with your storage/budget needs. If you're slightly OCD and love organization then you will LOVE this place, I know I do. Although many of my trips here are me wishing I could afford the organization ideas here, it still just makes me feel damn good to see how perfect shit can look when contained. Even if you're not looking to completely transform your closet space, they have plenty of nifty things for small organization ideas. This place and its parking lot can get pretty crazy on weekends so beware but it is one place that helps to fulfill my OCD needs. read more

As many times I have been here, I usually leave with something other than what I came in for. Damn it. I walk in with the intention of buying something I need, but I end up walking in/around the aisles thinking, "I could use that;"..."oh what an interesting container;" ... "do I really need these colorful hangers;" ...or once in awhile "what the hell is this?" I feel bad turning away the employees whenever they ask me if I have any questions. I have a love hate relationship w/ the container store... I used to refuse to go in there, having been there in my college years several times and thinking everything was overpriced... I still think that to some extent it is, but I guess it's not bad if it gets you organized. Then came a new condo purchase, and we wanted Elfa closet organizers in... *once a year* they have a sale (President's Day weekend) where all the ELFA stuff is 30% off. This makes it a bearable if not a really good deal. They design it for you on the computer, you take it home, install it, hope it works. We did two closets and the one we apparently didn't quite describe/measure well enough because the top two shelfs are completely inaccessible they're so high above the door frame. And we have extra parts which I'm sure we paid for? Putting it together was frustrating and required several drinks and days of breaks before it was completed. ELFA is one of those things where they completely overthought it to try to make it a mostly tool-less install. Only the top bar screws into the wall and then everything hangs from that. So in order to avoid having to make more than 4 or 5 screws go into a wall, you have to sit and wrangle these pieces to fit together just right... The drawers that pull in/out are very tricky to get snapped in just right, and the shelves require a good amount of patience. I'd rather just put a few extra screws into the wall, it's not like it's that portable anyway. Anyway, while waiting for our ELFA consultation I was walking around the store and did find some really cool stuff. And it's no more overpriced than anywhere else.. So I guess they've redeemed themselves. edit: a year later I found a bag of extra ELFA components... we took them back into the store and were able to get a store credit... so amen to that! I agree with another poster though... the world needs less plastic stuff, not more! read more
