First tip, if you arrive on the weekend, get here before 12pm. It gets crazy!! This place can help even the worst organized buffoon in to a neat organized buffoon. They have a great selection for many if not everything. For instance, hangers. They have plastic, wood, metal, different styles, price ranges, for the love of paper clips, they have an entire wall dedicated to them. They have a great range of prices, a very helpful, friendly staff, free parking. If you bring your desire to get organized, you will have found your Mecca. read more

I love organization and a store dedicated to it?!? We must be a perfect match!! But after venturing to this store on a random weeknight in the need of an organization project, I left disappointed -with a bag filled with a couple items and $50 less in my wallet. There are some creative things here, don't get me wrong. The jewlery hanger which has over 40 compartments to store your necklaces, earrings, and such. Or the under the cabinet storage rack. Or the salad container that seperates your dressing.....But it all left me a bit disappointed. Maybe it was the overpriced items or the lack of staff assistance (although they seemed adequately staffed)....but I just wasn't sold on this store. I'll save my at-home organization projects for Target and a bit of creativity. read more

I have mixed feelings about Container stores in general. While I did Elfa a portion of my closet, the cost of doing just the small portion challenged me to find other options to finish the rest of my closet. As for the rest of the store, it is awesome. If you are a compulsive shopper, DO NOT go into the store unprepared or you WILL come out spending more than you wanted!! My suggestion...for those not interested in spending so much, and don't mind the distance, take a trip to IKEA. Their shelving systems are almost identical (probably because both companies were started by Swedes), but the cost of IKEA is about 1/3 of the cost of ELFA. And I like IKEA's approach to business better than ELFA's, which seems to have adopted westernized business culture all too well. IKEA will have pretty much the same ways to organize and even decorate and if you spend some time at the Container Store...you'll want to make a whole day of it at IKEA. Make sure you bring the larger vehicle because you never know what you'll go home with. read more

I recently paid a visit here to pick up one of my favorite items. This place is a palace for the anal retentive and organized among us (I would place myself somewhat mid-range on that continuum), but it is full of great useful items, and also products people may not always buy for themselves, hence a great source for gifts for the multitudes on your list (nieces and nephews, employees, mistresses, etc.) And for muy poco dinero. Helpful, friendly workers there, too. As a resident at the Eastwood Home For The Easily Amused, I can keep myself occupied with nifty containers, folders and a label maker. What Ibought were the self-adhesing, laminating luggage tags, which can be used to laminate any type of cards, like my swim pass-hate to get that all wet! I always find something I or a gift recipient can use: household and office items, travel-related goods. This Christmas, make your ten-year-old some business cards and give him the gift of self-laminating luggage tags. Then maybe buy him a ticket to Pittsburgh. read more

I would dread going here, but my wife loved to go. After the third visit, I started looking at some of the prices. You know. This place has some stuff, but jeez, the prices are crazy... You know they make 75% profit margins off of a lot of their products. I can find some equivalents at Bed Bath and Beyond for so much less. Some examples are the metal wire racks that go for $50 at BBB, but $120 at the Container Store. Shop around. Bonus: At least they treat their employees right... so I guess you are buying some good karma as well as that Elfa shelf. read more

I recently purchased the ELFA closet system. I had designed the set up that I wanted at home based on my closet size and so when I came in I had the dimensions that I needed and provided that to one of the sales associates. She quickly (literally 5 minutes) put together two different schematics for the options I had with the space available. She printed them out and presented them to me for selection. They were the same in price but one provided a little bit more hanging space. For about $440 I got all the pieces to put the closet together myself including all the little things that I would never have picked out on my own like decorative touches and end pieces. They offer installation but it's 10% of total cost OR a minimum of $180. I did have to wait about an hour for them to cut all the pieces to size but once I got home I had it all set up within an hour. Once you get the main bar secured at the top it's similar to legos. I could not be more pleased with my new closet and the service and products from the container store. read more

I admit it - I'm a total geek when it comes to organization supplies. I love love love this store, and everytime I walk by my mind goes nuts with all the things I could do in my apartment with The Container Store's help... Back in the day when I managed a retail store we would come here all the time to get containers for various things - I loved that because then I could get organized on someone else's dime! I popped in here this afternoon to get some storage boxes I had seen on their website, and I had to put my blinders on and head directly for what I wanted so I wouldn't buy more than I could carry home. I lucked out and the boxes I wanted were on sale (score!), so I picked up 3 and went to the register where I was met with two absolutely lovely employees. They rang me up quickly and were smiling the entire time - heck, I'd be smiling if I worked here too! The boxes are great - they were easy to put together, they're sturdy, and they're cute on top of that. I'm using them to store some very sentimental items, and they are just perfect. Everything in here is great, the prices are very reasonable, and the staff is fantastic. A couple years ago I discovered they have an awesome gift wrap section too - great designs that you don't see everywhere else. They also have gift boxes in every size and shape you could think of, which comes in handy. Container Store, I love you. I've been to Container Stores before, and not been too impressed. I find them generally expensive for no reason. I went here on the off chance that a spice rack I saw online would work for me. For some reason, I'm the only person in the world who doesn't trust those nasty old spices that come in those racks. I go to the Spice House and other places, and so my jars are non-uniform. Many are too big for typical spice racks. I wouldn't think that would be so weird but like I said, no one else has this problem. So I find the thing from the website, it looks big enough, but I'm not sure. Fortunately at the end of the aile is a display with some cocoa tins and spice jars and olive oil bottles that are approximately the size I'm after, and So i test it and it's too small. On my way back I see this over-the-door rack thing that you can put on spice rack shelves or larger. The display has 2L bottles in one. Perfect! No nails required, expandable, and on sale! I go to check out, and I get the friendliest guy in the world. Seriously he deserves a promotion. He made sure I had the right stuff (I didn't know what the difference between residential doors and commercial doors, apparently some are thicker). He had a limp but walked back to the display twice to make sure everything was perfect. This guy gets 5 stars just by himself! read more

I loves me some Container Store, but this location desperately needs to address the problem of the lengthy line to check out. Worse than any DMV or post office. I've tried going on weekday mornings, weekday evenings, weekend afternoons -- always the same long, slow, winding line of 10-20 customers. And frankly all my fellow Waiters look wildly annoyed, so I'm surprised there aren't more people complaining about this issue on the Yelp page; maybe I go to the store more often than most and realize that it isn't a case of "I went at a busy time." The store can be deserted, but that line never changes. Always plenty of employees running around, chit-chatting, seemingly not doing much -- could we maybe train some of them to man the silent registers and help speed the line along? And the "order it online, come pick it up" attempt to solve their problem is nuts to me. If I'm ordering it online, why don't I just order something comparable from Amazon and have it delivered for free? And tax-free at that? It seems like as a brick-and-mortar retailer The Container Store should WANT me to come in and browse and spend money. Instead I walk in the door, look at the line, get angry, and leave. I can live with the inflated financial cost of their plastic bins, just not the investment in time to buy the damn thing. Who's with me?! It's time for Occupy Wall Street to Occupy Container Store. Moved in my new condo and had empty closets. Not even a rod to hold a hanger. What's a non handy guy like myself to do? Luckily, my GF was referred here from multiple coworkers. I took the closet measurements and we were on our way. Showed up on a Saturday afternoon during the 30% Elfa sale. Within 15 minutes we were working with Ren who listened to what we needed. We wanted something fairly basic. 20 minutes later we returned and he had the closets outlined. $500 for material and $180 for the install. Sold. Parts got dropped off on Wednesday and closets were installed in 2-3 hours on Friday. High quality material and labor. Would recommend. read more

I've had it with this particular Container Store (Lincoln Park, on North Avenue). I've been a long-term customer at this store and have spent thousands of dollars here. They used to be very friendly and always helpful but recently, since they've re-opened, every time I have been in the store, I've encountered rude staff and staff that are not helpful in anyway. The products that they sell are of high-quality. The staff has gotten rude and unhelpful and have forgotten that every time we purchase something from their company, we are paying a part of their salary. Envy me hard biatches. We ELFA-ed our closet yesterday. I have been coveting these closets for a while, and this is because they are damned expensive. Now, what you don't know yet is that *all* of those closet systems are expensive. No one gets a closet that nice without laying down some cash. The great thing about this one is that there is only one thing to screw into the wall-all the rest hang from it. So, it theoretically could be moved if in my new home someday I had another 108"x108"x35" closet. Just saying. If I had one. That said, I got gift cards for Christmas. So, I had a soft little landing pad on which to land this ginormous bill-unfortunately it was a bit too little and I still ended up shelling out. But. Oh darling, my closet is so divine. I have room for not only all my short hanging items, like shirts and pants. I have room for my damned wedding dress in the long hang, along with other sundry gowns (Don't ask. Ok, ask. Answer: Moroccans wear a lot of gowns, and if you marry one, you wear gowns too.). I have drawers for sweaters, I have shelves for shirts and shoes. I have racks for ties and belts. I...have...nirvana. And so can you. read more

First things first, the container store is NOT the cheapest place to go for organizational items. If you are purely a price-based shopper you can do much better going to Target, Home Depot, or ikea. (I've also found that going through Uline in Waukegan is EXCELLENT if you need to buy a bulk quantity of containers for organizing. I've found their jars to be perfect for organizing my pantry and at $2.00/item for a 32 ounce size they are MUCH cheaper than anything I've seen elsewhere, but I digress.) If you don't mind paying a bit of a price premium for selection, this store is the way to go. First and foremost, they are pretty exhaustive as far as storage and organizing goes. If you want something, there is a good chance they have it. That alone is wonderful because it doesn't mean multiple stops. The brands they carry are also fantastic quality and if something is not up to snuff they ALWAYS take it back. Their exchange policy seems pretty customer-friendly, which is great. But the best part for me, is the service. They balance that fine line here of being proactive and helpful, but without pushing. Recently I was looking for a solution to organize my purses. I had NO idea that I wanted, only that I didn't want them lying around. The associate was invaluable. Originally we were in the closet section, but after asking me questions about the storage space I was working with, he pointed out something in the Elfa section for kitchens that he thought would be a better fit. He was right. Additionally, when I mentioned I was a putz with tools, he offered to put it together for me free of charge. He even had it assembled for me while I was shopping so by the time I checked out it was all ready to go. And another equally friendly associate helped me get it to my car. Bottom line is could I have gotten the stuff cheaper elsewhere, possibly. But the quality of Elfa and so many of their products is great and the service so helpful I don't want to. read more

Going to the Container Store lives up to the hype for all guys as being purgatory on the weekend during my trip today after being harassed by the parking lot attendant. I parked within 60 feet of the store entrance and took my girlfriends bags to the car while she went around the corner to Sephora. After finishing dropping stuff off in my car the parking lot attendant tracks me down and asks to see my receipt. I had no problem walking back to my car to show him, but he wouldn't walk with me (obviously too much work). I would think someone who's job it is to watch the happenings in a parking lot would notice me take my girlfriend's bags right in front of him and walk them to the car ( I guess he was off duty or something during that time). What an annoyance. The company who runs the parking lot security at this location clearly doesn't understand anything about customer service. I brought this up to a manager in the store who told me that there was nothing she could do, that they didn't work with the company that manages the parking lot. Clearly someone at the Container store does. It's amazing that there's is no ability to leave feedback for an experience at a big chain like this. What a joke. Instead of shopping at a store with a cramped parking lot with attendants who harass you, try home depot right down the street when you need to organize your closet. At least there the parking is easy. read more

One star for the fact that it is chock full of neat stuff. But this big box seriously needs to figure out its parking situation. We tried to buy some shelving here on Sunday, and after the 20 minute drive down here, were dismayed to find that the parking lot was impossibly stuffed. And their "Valet Line" was overloaded with people loading their cars, or just parking like morons in the middle of the lot waiting for someone to leave. Really, why bother!? I love the the Container Store, especially when elfa is on sale - eventually I'll have it in every available closet or pantry space in my house, I think. They do two elfa sales events, one in late summer, one right after Christmas, and each lasts about 6 weeks. Elfa is fantastic stuff and so sturdy. While you're waiting for your elfa order to be cut, shop the rest of the store for cool closet accesories, kitchen food containers, the most beautiful and expensive giftwrap I've ever seen and hip trash cans. They even sell the Oscar the Grouch can. The service is never as good at this store as compared to Oakbrook or Schaumburg, but the sales people are still nice. There's a lot of parking, but the lot is often full. The best part is installing the closet systems - I enjoy drilling holes in walls and making a mess, swearing at my husband's tools. Ok, I admit it...elfa is easy to install. But I still feel tough doing it. 1/20/07 update: jeez - get a grip Container Store - don't tell me "you're not a medical center" when you really mean to say "sorry for the shitty service." So.Much.Stuff. And that about sums it up. Very useful if you need... Well just about anything. Gift wrap, wall shelving, bottles, jars, shoe racks, coat hangers, strange little flash lights that are powered by pumping a little turny handle. In all seriousness, this is a nice place if you know what you need. But the quality on a lot of items is sub par. Your new shelving unit will likely be made of either fiberboard or heavy duty cardboard. What you're really paying for is some junky furniture packed up to look like something useful. There are good things to be found here... A nice selection of gift wrap, some decent solutions for your kitchen, and nice binders for keeping your work organized (though, you can really get these anywhere). You'll spend a lot of money on very little if you're not careful here. And as there aren't many alternatives to low quality organization solutions, you may not have a choice. read more

This place makes me so happy...is that weird? I like being organized, even though I'm not. I strive for cleanliness and order, but it's difficult to accomplish. The Container Store makes me feel like I can achieve my goals of being an organized bachelor, which makes me happy. They have awesome items that really make sense. I love their huge storgae bins, and the different styles you can buy them in. I love their laundary bins as well, as they have a nice wide variety of selections to choose from. When you need to buy storage items to hold all the stuff you already have the container should have what you need. This past weekend my finance and I redid the three closets in our condo to maximize out space. The staff at The container Store usually always friendly and helpful. The container Store figured out this great idea after you order you ELFA system you have to wait about 30 minutes for them to get all the items cut and ready. During that time you are walking around the store and soon find yourself with a handful of items you didn't even know you needed. The ELFA closet system is great. It is pretty easy to put together and seems to hold everything. I don't think I will need another ELFA system anytime soon but if I did I would go back to The Container Store and order another system. read more

The staff here is always helpful, and they know the merchandise. Their recommendations are top notch, in terms of both quality and functionality, plus they really listen yo the customer. Check out is very organized and efficient, even when lines are long they get the job done without lolly-gagging around! Merchandise is very well organized. There is a huge variety of items, including shipping and gift wrapping essentials. Free parking and help loading your vehicle if needed. Designers are available to work with you for the Elfa organization systems and can customize your design, with drawings and notes to sod in DIY installation. For an additional charge, installation is available. A bit more expensive for some items, but I find the quality of the items offered here is much higher than those found elsewhere. We've gotten organizational shelving from the Container Store twice now and have had issues both times. It starts with the in-store experience, which is pretty awful. They don't have enough people working in the closet section, and the one who helped us out made us wait for half an hour while she went off somewhere because she didn't "have email access" to get into their system. Okaaaaaay.... She rifled through a stack of papers trying to find our quote, to no avail. Apparently they don't digitize their records? It was all very inconvenient, but eventually she got in. This is for a coat closet, so all we need is a bar with a shelf above it. This cost us over $250, plus $180 for the installation. We were told this covered delivery, too, but that wasn't the case. The saleswoman chirped about how easy it is with the Dolly app - but it was anything but. It was hard to know that they would collect the right items, and even the so-called free option (a pick-up truck, where we were supposed to help them carry stuff), came to $69. We opted for the cheaper option of in-store pick-up. All in all, this was an extremely unpleasant experience, and we're getting to the point where we don't care if our shelving matches in every closet. The Container Store is expensive, has terrible customer service, and doesn't deserve our business. I'd rethink doing a closet organization project with them. You'd hope they've have this process down smooth and could offer competitive pricing, but that's sadly not the case. read more

Even though I used to work at the Gap nearly right across the street it took me years to venture into the Container Store-because I was sure that I would love it too much. I was right. I have some regular customers at my job that are so awesome that they gave me a $25 gift card for my graduation this spring... I went in and literally spent over an hour in there, marveling at all the strange and wonderful (virtually unnecessary) stuff. I'm an EXTREMELY organized, type-A personality so I LOVED THIS STORE! I got a great new cutting board, a container designed specifically to hold a cupcake, and another container specially designed to hold bricks of cream cheese, a box shaped perfectly for 12x12 scrapbook pages, and so much more! read more

I've been in The Container Store numerous times before but it wasn't until i went for my closet that I felt like writing a review. When we got a condo we had a nice big walk-in closet--with one lone pole in the back. After a year of squished clothes and rubbermaid boxes we decided to get a closet organizer. I looked around for a while and everything is pretty damn pricey. Found out that there was an Elfa sale at Container Store (20% off) so we went to the store. The Web site said that the closet we wanted was out of stock but at the store they said it was no problem. We measured before going and had to wait just a little while for some service (it was busy because of the sale). A really nice woman named Mary showed us the various options and went over the choices. Note: You might want to commit the prices to memory or carry a catalog with you because they don't offer the prices on anything. You have to ask "Is the mesh drawer more money than the basket drawer?" to get an answer. But after about 30 minutes we had a nice look at the computer to see our new closet set-up. They could deliver it within one week (not sure how long it would take if you wanted to pick it up there). I should also note that installation was HELLA expensive ($800!!!!) so we opted to install ourselves. The next week the pieces arrived all well-marked. Mary showed us how to install it in the store so we were pretty much up-to-speed. It was really pretty easy to put together. Time consuming but easy. This wasn't the cheapest option but in a condo I felt like it was the best deal because hopefully in a few years when we sell, the new potential owner isn't stuck with the closet set-up that we picked out. He/She can just march on over to The Container Store and get different shoe racks or more drawers. read more

I really don't understand why an entire store of containers is needed. For anyone. This store is completely unnecessary. We went here to get some bathroom organizers and ended up wandering around, in total awe. Why are there so many containers? Can't people throw things away? It was also extremely crowded when we went, which puzzled me, since I couldn't imagine how that many people needed to contain their things. The entire concept of this store is bizarre to me. I love this place - I'm a container/organization conceptual junkie (I love boxes and neat little containers for everything; I'm awful at actually *using* them) - so this places is highly dangerous for me as I want to buy everything and won't use most of it. They have a great online sales site tied into local inventory control so you can literally order up something and go pick it up without paying shipping. Or, you can just use it to check to see if they have it in stock, print out the list, and go visit and browse in person. I did that a couple of days ago for a bunch of little supplies I'd been needing but couldn't seem to find; they had almost everything I was looking for. Yes, they are pricey on most of their goods, but the service is great and it is wheelchair accessible. (Unfortunately, they don't have any motorized carts in there, so you have to bring your own chair.) Going through the store is an inspiration to get organized; I just personally run into the "willing spirit, flesh exhausted" problem, but fortunately I realize it before I buy, say, that oh-so-cool wheeled 8 drawer shiny metal cart for $149. If only my apartment was laid out better.... They have their own parking lot, which is a big plus in that congested shopping corridor. So go and have fun browsing, get what you need, but be careful impulse overruns. Try to have a plan for your core needs *before* you get there. read more

You place your order online at their website and choose a "pick up" time/date. 10 mins before you arrive at the crazy North Ave area, you can call them and let them know you're on your way, then you pull up to the curb in front of the store and they will bring all your stuff out. i love going to the container store and finding ways to better organize my life but with the recent rash of "tubberware" storage box murders, i wonder if this store has perfected the way of organizing your life a little too well. I mean, when a store can basically sell you a "coffin"- we as a society have just discovered, invented, produced way too many things that we actually use. I recently moved to the north side of the city and have way too much stuff for my small apartment. I went to the container store looking for pantry storage for all my kitchen appliances and dry goods. What I appreciated most was that the customer service people let me browse and look around rather than bombarding me with sales pitches. When I was ready to make a decision they were there to help me choose between a few similar items. Chris was attentive but didn't try and sell something I didn't want or didn't need. He listened to my concerns about the space and the pieces I was choosing between. He also helped explain the return policy, how to assemble the piece, and all my other random questions. He was very helpful and very concise. He made the process easy and enjoyable. I was in the store at 4:15 today. I had my things and found one more item I needed. Unfortunately, there was only one on the floor and I needed 4 more. The sales associate checked the stock and said that the store had 9 of them. He left for a minute and came back and said it would take him too long to find what I need. So he could order it and I would get it in a week. If I wanted it in a week, I would have ordered it from home. This place is an Organizers dream!!! They seriously have containers for anything you can think of. Since I'm not that organized I was a bit overwhelmed when I walked in. I walked in wanting to buy a shower organizer and I stood in front of all the shower organizers they had and was a bit confused on which one I wanted. I thought it was going to be easy, but when I saw their selection it took me a while to decide which one to get. If you're like me, sometimes you need 17 light-green plastic hangers. And when this happens it's good to know exactly where to fill this need. It's not the cheapest place for everything, but it sure is easy for very specific organizational tasks. This chain helped much with the house organization in my past life in the South, and despite its massiveness, I was still able to quickly get-in-get-out in filling my much smaller apartment needs this summer.
