First dinner there tonight and we all loved it! Checked it out for a party in the fall and 5 of us loved each of our meals. Artichoke dip, prime rib sliders, grilled chicken sandwiches all made with different specifics, everyone over everything. Tater tots, cold beer for hubby and the Hudsonville blush cider was yummy. Definitely the coolest retro-style place I've ever eaten at ever. The food was great and hot, our server was super friendly and attentive, and I'm honestly just obsessed with the decor and overall atmosphere of the place. The vibe was great and I wish I didn't live 2 hours away otherwise I'd come here at least every other week. I also loved that they had old games like an Atari, and I just was super stoked to come here. We were in the neighborhood and was yelping for something yummy and The Commons was one of the first restaurants to come up. It looked interesting so we decided to visit. So glad we did!! The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Its decorated with a 70's theme!! So fun!! The menu is small but what we had was all delicious!! And we came in during Happy Hour!! Discounts on all Shareables and drinks!! Bonus!! We tried a few of the shareables: prime rib sliders, wings and street corn jalapeno mac n cheese. No dissatisfaction on any of them!! We would have liked sliced jalapenos added to the mac n cheese but thats something we can request next time. The wings, hands down, our favorites!! The rub alone without dipping was delicious!! The only negative, it wasn't that busy, service was a little slow. Our waitress was training, she and her trainee were very pleasant. We will definitely visit again!! When you first walk in you instantly flash back to your grandparents house! The 60s and 70s decor is spot on! Made me reminisce of family times. The food was excellent! We went on a early Saturday afternoon and ate off their brunch menu. My husband had the breakfast burrito. It was the best out of our two meals, I would highly recommend it, smothered in a homemade white cheese sauce that was addictive and a verde sauce! I had the fried chicken thigh sandwich, great flavors and great and batter on the chicken! I will say it was kind of soggy and the bread fell apart from all the toppings but the flavor combination was really good!! We also had a couple cocktails both were very refreshing but over priced. Since opening, this restaurant has suffered with front of the house issues that have not improved. While you no longer have to wait to get a table, there will still be delays with the bar and kitchen, even when they're not busy. While the decor and atmosphere are still "retro cool" the food quality has dropped since opening with no real standouts from the menu. The decor was really interesting but the service and the food was not great. We went for brunch at 1:30pm and they were sold out of waffles and pancakes. Even though the place was packed, the service at the bar was quick and by the time we got our drinks ( in 70's style glasses ), our table was ready. We let them know through yelp when we were about fifteen minutes away, so our name moved up the waitlist to almost perfectly sync with our arrival. It is cool to go back in time like that. Four of us ordered a few apps to share, and it was just the right amount of food: fried brussel sprouts (delicious), prime rib dirty tots (poor prime rib to tots ratio, but good), street corn Mac and cheese (kind of bland), and prime rib sliders (on Hawaiian rolls). They have the most comfortable bar I've ever sat at... Think '70's cushioned chairs and cushioned counter edge for comfy elbows. Bartender said after New year's once opening rush dies down they're gonna hold reservations for the lounge areas..they looked straight out of Brady Bunch, 70's games and all, really great place to go before a show or just for cocktails anytime... I've been a fan of the Commons, it's owner and chef since discovering them all in Los Angeles. I had heard that it reopened in the owners home town of GR and was thrilled to have a wedding there this weekend. I imagined it was a great place, but whoa I was blown away!!! Full bar, full menu and full of ambiance, my parents's basement from the 70's. I stuck with Old Fashioned's and my friend had Manhattans all night but mixed it up with the food. We had the loaded tots, fish and chips and Mac and Cheese. All amazing. Mel our bartender and server was on his game. It's the kind of place that makes me rethink living in LA and moving to GR. Been here a few times now...it does not disappoint. Decor is like time travel back to the 70's. Food is fantastic and servings are plentiful (plan on leftovers or share with a crowd). Drinks are good and a decent pour. Even though there are some throw back toys as part of the decor (like a rock'em, sock'em robot), this is a place for grown-ups--not children. I recommend for date night--not family night. Kids are too tempted to jump up and down on the cool giant bean bag chair or rattle the TV trays and bang on the console TV...and as we all know, this detracts from the dining experience and make you want to throttle the parents who think it's cute and harmless. First things first, am very supportive of women-owned business, and GR is a better community for this one! It has a funky cool vibe, and both the drink and food menus are good, if not still trying to find their way a bit. What we loved: The wings. The best wings I think I've ever had! Spicy and flavorful with a dry rub that is simply the BEST. They are cooked to perfection and fall off the bone tender and flavorful without killing your taste-buds with too much heat. All of us said we would return for them. The cocktails are good, but was looking for more 70s inspired/theme type drinks. The typical mixology-type drinks you see on most menus nowadays are present, and if you can get yourself a bartender to make them, you'd be doing better than we did. Unfortunately, the three times I've been, the service has been bad. I've sat at the bar twice and it was embarrassing. Bartenders overwhelmed and only focusing on the service bar, desperately trying to avoid eye contact with those of us sitting actually *at* the bar. My drink of a Manhattan on the rocks was made incorrectly (Watched the bartender make it with only dry vermouth, not sweet), and served up, even though I asked for it on the rocks. When I asked for another to be made on the rocks, it was simply poured into another glass with ice. Asked for it to be remade and she was clearly annoyed with me for asking, saying I did not know what she used. One of the members of our party was told to order a beer if they wanted a drink immediately because they were "too busy to wash glassware" for other kinds of drinks. While during a visit sitting at a table, we were told by the server that it took over 20 minutes for him to return because the bar kept running out of things and it was during a shift change, so nobody was paying attention. That said, there is no doubt I'll be back for the wings, and hopefully able to report the bartenders feeling better about their interactions with their guests. I really really want to love this establishment, and I am sure once all the kinks are worked out, I will. read more

You will feel like you just walked on the set of That 70s show. This restaurant is hidden in an old apartment complex so my expectations were not high but WOW I'm quickly becoming a regular. This is a GREAT place to eat. I had the chicken wings and they were amazing. The meat slid off the bones so you could eat the wing whole and not have to bite it off the bone. There were two sauces, one semi-hot Korean and the other a cool ranch. The decor is 70's so gen x and boomers will have a blast from the past! My sister and mother had the steak and they both enjoyed it. The steak comes with a large amount of fries. The fries were alright, nothing special but the steak was nicely seasoned and large enough for two people to share. We also had the avocado toast which I thought was fine but had to much balsamic vinegar for our taste. Id rate is 6/5 but sadly that's not possible. Also this is my new favorite restaurant that is near my home. The wait time was almost immediate and we came here for lunch on a Sunday. To sum it up, eat here! read more
