Once again.... Invariably we stop at Common Man on the return trip after a long ride from the Sunapee area to the White Mountains, all seasons of the year. Why? Always quality. Always good service. Always friendly. Always good food. And we bring guests, especially on ski trips. Of particular notice is their health department rating that Yelp publishes as a part of their venue posting. 100 percent. Despite the busy customer traffic, it is always kept meticulously clean. One reason for sopping by... We came over here after a full day and were getting home a bit later than usual so cooking was out of the question. The manager asked us for our option and we decided on the upstairs. We made the right choice. Cozy, welcoming, and pleasant atmosphere. The rustic environment, and farm-related chotchkies all around give the place a special ambiance. The cheese and cracker trays are sinful as all heck but they are a good start on a long day. After ordering brews, we settled on ordering food. We shared delicious chicken tenders and then I ordered a Sesame Tuna Salad which was superb. Wait service was exemplary. I have been coming here since I was a kid and it has always been a one-of-a-kind place. The lounge upstairs and the live music really made the night when I took my boyfriend here for our anniversary. Loved The Common Man Ashland, my boyfriend and I went there for our 2 year anniversary, it's now my favorite restaurant in the Plymouth area. Great experience, delicious food, and our server, Josh, was GREAT. Checked in on us when needed, strongly influenced our dessert choice, which was delish as well, had such a positive attitude, and overall was a great server. Here for a quick lunch. Service was friendly, but a bit slow. Took about 7-8 minutes after our soup and starter to serve our entrees. Drink: Common Man Ale. Standard. Less hoppy than typical golden ale. Soup: lobster corn chowder. Thickly made, generous portions of lobster meat and corn, seasoning was good. Starter: special escargot, snail meat taken from shell and poached with cheese, butter, and served with croutons. A fun dish, snail meat tasted bouncy, cheese and butter went well with the snail and croutons. The additional bread for cheese was cold though. Entrees: my friend ordered the fall chicken and said it was a bit too salty. I had the NY sirloin steak medium rare. The menu specified that it was choice cut, so quality is not up to par with metropolitan steak houses. It also came closer to medium than medium rare. But seasoning was good, outside grill was spot-on, and inside texture remained juicy. Overall: 3.5-4 stars. read more

I'm really surprised at the good reviews at this place. Our experience was not good and this was my first and last time going there. My neighbor and I sat at the bar and Maddy was the bartender. She was not friendly and actually rude. She sprayed down our area with cleaner, without saying hello or any acknowledgement. I noticed other people having issues with her service as we were beginning to look at the menu. We ordered potato skins to split. They came out cold. I'm not talking, they were sitting too long. They were cold to the touch, especially in the middle. It was as if they had been sitting in the fridge and got reheated, but didn't get heated enough. We sent them back. She took them off the bill, but no apology and no asking if we wanted another app or for her to order another of the same. Our salads came out. They tasted fine, except for the tuna on my salad, which actually had zero taste. My fault for ordering tuna here. I shouldn've know it would be sub-par. My friend had a salad and added chicken. She said it was good, but the amount of chicken was perhaps a 1/2 a breast. Overall, a really disappointing experience and terrible service. It didn't even seem like she was having a bad day. She just seemed to be in the wrong profession. We won't be back. read more

So told they were short staffed. "Everyone called in sick". The few staff there were complaining amongst themselves. Were told at first a 20 min wait to sit at open seats at the bar. Then convinced them to let us sit and order a drink , understanding service may take awhile. Bartender was fine with us but very rude to another customer. Wrong item delivered to one in our party , veggie burgers were dry with what seemed to be frozen buns that were defrosted in the microwave. Not good. Had we not been starving and fact that we have been coming here for 30 plus years , we would have had to bring all of this to their attention. Instead , we will not return. Pretty sad. Our family of four arrived shortly after 6pm on a Friday evening. Pleasantly surprised to get a table right away. That was the only thing all night that was quick. We waited close to 10 minutes just for a menu. Ordered an appetizer that arrived with our entrees - more than 40 minutes after ordering. Two burgers ordered medium were very well done, one nearly charred. Once we were done we waited another 25 minutes for our check. Other food was good. Took almost two hours door to door and it wasn't busy. Bummed out since we'd heard great things about the place. Won't return to this location anytime soon. read more

We are at the location in Ashland. The cottage cheese and cracker station (for which all Common Mans are famous) is disgusting. The cheese is all separated and runny. I knew as soon as I walked in that we were at the WRONG location. The entryway smells like mold and must. A nasty smell of old fish wafts at you when you enter. The young waiter delivers a porter instead of an ale and tried to convince my boyfriend to the contrary. So glad we drove 40 minutes out of our way for this disappointment. I will never think of the Common Man the same again. Update: The center of my Apple Walnut Chicken was ice cold and had to send it back. They did rectify it. read more

I thought I lucked out with pizza--it was the star of the show, I guess? Not great, not terrible. But why the tinfoil liner? Did they think the box was too fancy for their pizza? And the pièce de résistance: we ordered delivery. The restaurant is five minutes away. Two hours later, our food finally showed up. Wings for an appetizer, over cooked and dry and no sauce (sweet and sour) that we requested. My meal, shrimp tacos, the driest most tasteless things i have ever had in my life, how do you mess up tacos? The service for this place is bizarre from a customer perspective. Host writes a ticket with your table number and then directs you to a section. You stand around and then you wait for someone to direct you to your table. The service was fine, once we sat. The self serve crackers & cheese thing felt clunky. There are a bunch of Common Man restaurants here in NH so we decided to try this one out, I think they say this was the original one. We stopped for lunch while driving north and it's a nice old building with plenty of character. I had the blackened chicken wrap and my wife had the classis Rueben and they were both great. We had the "almost escargot" (mushroom caps, baked with garlic butter/etc) and they were a good way to start the meal. We'll be on the lookout to try some of the other locations while we are out driving around, service was good and the atmosphere was nice. read more

Ate with my mom and 2 year old son. Bigger portions. I had the shrimp appetizer as my dinner. It was delicious so was the homemade ranch dressing. The iced tea was also really good. On January 30th we met friends at the Ashland location for a shared birthday lunch for our friend. They choose the location. We were not at all impressed with several things. First and foremost the restaurant was absolutely filthy. The bathroom had sticky coke or something on the door and other, long ago dried dripping kinds of things on the door and walls in the stall. Upon returning from the restroom I noticed all around our table had not been swept and the table next to us (the big round one) had not been swept from the night before (were were there at 11:30). This was a horrible reflection for the restaurant and the floors being littered with food from the night before (since we were one of the first to be seated when they opened. I simply concluded that it was dried up and from the night before or another day). Then our friends arrived and we ordered lunch. I asked what was in the ravioli and the waitress said; "well it is ravioli what do you expect" Seriously? Since this was not our first experience with this waitress at this location I must say that she has not improved over time. My soup arrived. It was not even close to warm let alone hot. The ravioli was also tepid and chewy and tasted 'off'. Given our experience, I would say that our waitress, Marilyn, should not be waiting tables there and that the entire staff should be mindful of dressing like they are waiting on people not wearing clothes that are pilled and dirty (three of the ones we saw were all disheleved) and hair should not be stringy, dirty and should be pulled back. Her attitude and presence was disturbing and unprofessional. We were also both very disappointed with our meals. We eat at many of the Common Man locations. Most always it is good and we are very happy. However, Ashland is off my list. It's simply gross. We will go to the Italian Farmhouse right up the road rather than eat there. read more
