On January 30th we met friends at the Ashland location for a shared birthday lunch for our friend. They choose the location. We were not at all impressed with several things. First and foremost the restaurant was absolutely filthy. The bathroom had sticky coke or something on the door and other, long ago dried dripping kinds of things on the door and walls in the stall. Upon returning from the restroom I noticed all around our table had not been swept and the table next to us (the big round one) had not been swept from the night before (were were there at 11:30). This was a horrible reflection for the restaurant and the floors being littered with food from the night before (since we were one of the first to be seated when they opened. I simply concluded that it was dried up and from the night before or another day). Then our friends arrived and we ordered lunch. I asked what was in the ravioli and the waitress said; "well it is ravioli what do you expect" Seriously? Since this was not our first experience with this waitress at this location I must say that she has not improved over time. My soup arrived. It was not even close to warm let alone hot. The ravioli was also tepid and chewy and tasted 'off'. Given our experience, I would say that our waitress, Marilyn, should not be waiting tables there and that the entire staff should be mindful of dressing like they are waiting on people not wearing clothes that are pilled and dirty (three of the ones we saw were all disheleved) and hair should not be stringy, dirty and should be pulled back. Her attitude and presence was disturbing and unprofessional. We were also both very disappointed with our meals. We eat at many of the Common Man locations. Most always it is good and we are very happy. However, Ashland is off my list. It's simply gross. We will go to the Italian Farmhouse right up the road rather than eat there. read more

We hadn't been to The Comman Man in Ashland for probably 10+ years so we decided to give it another try. It was early evening mid-week so we had no problem getting a table. Bread and warm rolls provided were good and they have a small self-serve cheese and crackers table just outside the dining area (unique, but a bit odd). We shared the bacon-wrapped shrimp skewer appetizer special. It was good but the bacon was more soggy than crispy. My wife had the Nantucket Pie entree ($32) and I had the prime rib special ($29). My wife was happy with her entree but the prime rib was served barely luke warm and more medium rare than medium. I should have sent it back to get it cooked a bit more but I didn't (that's on me). It definitely wasn't worth the price. Unfortunately, our dining experience was negatively impacted by two older women who were seated directly behind us and giving our waitress a hard time. The waitress did a great job keeping her cool and I noticed diners at other tables were also annoyed at the antics of these two. A nice touch were the bits of white chocolate that they brought to the table with the check. All-in-all we won't be headed back to The Common Man anytime soon. read more

As with all of the Common Man establishments, you can't go wrong with anything on their incredible food and drink menus. Their Peanut Butter and Onion Jam Cheeseburger is probably my all time favorite burger in the world, and I am a foodie! I always thought the Common Man restaurants did a reasonably good job and I particularly like their Rt. 93 food stop. Last night, I tried their restaurant in Ashland and it was awful. 3 times I had to ask the server (Jake), to bring us napkins and utensils. What restaurant doesn't give you napkins and utensils when you sit down? He served us bread and I still had to ask him 2 more times, for napkins and utensils. My companion had escargot and before she was 1/2 way through her escargot, I looked over and the basket of bread was gone? Why? Who serves escargot with a dinner fork? Did you ever try to get escargot out of the typical serving dish, with a dinner fork? It simply doesn't fit. I don't know how the escargot tasted, because I didn't taste it. I did try the "toast points" that were served with it and they were disgusting. Small cubes of stale white bread, with not enough toasting to take away the stale taste. Oh come on, you can do way better than that, can't you? I had baked haddock, that tasted like dirt. It was dried out and inedible. It was served with uncooked broccoli that was cold and a baked potato that had probably been cooked the day before. My companion had a Caesar salad with steak and I could hard detect a hint of green lettuce ... it was all white/yellow. I was afraid to taste her steak. The Common Man? This was common slop and the cook who let this out of his kitchen and the person who served it, are in the wrong business. read more

Feeling generous with the 3-star rating. I think my friends enjoyed it more than I did, but neither of them has ever worked in the business. The server was friendly but really inaccurate. Maybe not paying attention on a slow night? We ordered 3 beverages, one of which was rung in incorrectly and had to be remade, and 3 entrees. The others seemed to enjoy their meals, but mine was not good. I ordered a veggie burger, because I remember that the Common Man group used to have a good, homemade version. This was not it. I got a veggie burger that was dry & tasteless, scorched on top, and covered with a pile of peppers & onions that I didn't order or want. I asked for a side of aioli for the burger and got a side of sweet (asian?) sauce. The server also forgot the glass of wine I ordered with dinner. My first visit was memorable! I absolutely loved the at home ambiance of the restaurant. The free cheese and crackers was a huge bonus. The service was attentive and quality of service was excellent@. One page menu, but the beer selection is amazing, from local on draft to commercial brands. Brought some friends to this location we sat in the bar area at a table, the service seemed rushed and uninformative, it was not busy we were the only ones there, when we received our food it was subpar. I will first start by saying the food is very good. We're from Toronto and have eaten here two nights in a row. The variety is great and the quality holds up across all the dishes. Lobster corn chowder is our favourite. The problem is the service. We had Sarah on the first night. She was really good but our second drinks didn't come until the meals were done. To their credit, they comped one drink. The second night, again food was great but the service was terrible. I believe our waitress was fairly new, Alexis. She seemed to be anchored to the station monitor or consolidation of the cracker table dip. I watched for 10 minutes as my drinks sat at the bar, and sat, and sat as Alexis did everything but go to the bar. And why isn't one of the two bartenders reminding her as the drinks sat there? Another table of 5 became very frustrated and came over to Alexis to remind her about the drinks they ordered. We ordered a second round, and again waited and waited. I let my food get cold so I could enjoy my drink with it. It was obvious she had not put the order in as the two bartenders stood around chatting. Only when I caught her eye did she put the order in. Alexis clearly still needs some over site and mentoring. Nice young lady but she did not do a number of things that are basic. Didn't ask how food was for either apps or dinner, didn't prioritize the client, etc. we would have gone back a third night but unlikely. The service is very frustrating and disrupts what is an otherwise very good meal. When people are dropping a $100 a night, the spend needs to be justified. read more

This restaurant has a warm feel of an old New England home. Which is the theme, especially the old nick-nacks. The layout is kind of odd, but that's New England. I liked the wooden signs and there was a cheese and dip cart that you can help yourself to. I did not partake unfortunately. What was especially cool, the displays at the front entrance selling antique advertisements and even medical literature. I'm serious, I wanted to get this advertisement for Chesterfield cigarettes and a medical magazine printed in the 19th century, but we couldn't justify it because we had no place for it. Lest we forget the food! Before we get there, review some drinks. I opted for a dark and stormy. If I recall correctly, using Sailor Jerry rum which is a good rum. A great base for the drink, it was refreshing and not tasting particularly strong with the rum, but otherwise smooth. Having recently eaten somewhere and missing the opportunity for escargot, I didn't pass this one up. Escargot, well presented, not overcooked so it had good texture. The garlic was subtle, with the melted butter and cheese it was quite filling itself. After a heavy dish, it needs to be balanced out with something lighter. The Polenta and Vegetable Ragú was not something I would normally choose, but opted for. The polenta was baked, which was good for the dish but I was expecting it to be in porridge form which is the way I preferred. Otherwise when you bake it you may as well call it cornbread! It was still good for the dish, it absorbed the Ragú. The vegetables were cooked just right, and the sauce was light and mellow. A nice sequel to the escargot. Not being the dessert type, my wife wanted the Mud Pie Ice Cream Sandwich. It wasn't so much a sandwich, but slices of ice cream cake. Who the hell cares? It was delicious. Hot fudge and whipped cream, graham cracker crust, coffee ice cream, and chocolate, how can you go wrong? Oh and it was a big dessert, she needed help otherwise half of such a beautiful piece would have gone to waste. Service was friendly, our waitress was very pleasant and attentive. For the style of restaurant, this was a great experience. No, it's not fine dining, but it's a trusted local chain that's been around for decades and they always have consistently good food and service. My friend and I enjoyed the complimentary cheese dips with crackers - the waitress knew I had to eat gluten-free and brought me celery and carrot sticks to have with the cheese dips, which was quite thoughtful and also tasty. I got a burger, which I pretty much never get in restaurants, but when your hormones tell you that you need red meat and you need it now, you don't refuse. It was the boursin burger and quite good, although I think they screwed up the orders on the meat in terms of how we wanted them cooked. My friend got a caesar salad with steak tips and hers were as rare as I wanted my burger. Whatever - simple mistake, no biggie. We're both pretty easy going so we just went with the flow. Oh, she really liked her salad FYI. And the dessert - they had a gluten-free brownie (a nice fudgy one) sundae with yummy hot fudge, whipped cream, and candied hazelnuts! Say what?! It's like a Nutella explosion in your mouth - wait, does that technically make it an IMPlosion? Don't know, don't care. It was one of the best desserts I've had in a restaurant in a LONG while. Also, as an aside, I had my doggos with me, and since you can't leave doggos alone in a hotel/air bnb we had to take them with us. It was cooling off at night but still humid, and I had them in my backseat with the windows fully down but forgot to bring their water bowl. Our waitress brought a to-go bowl with 2 cups of iced water so I could go out and provide them with cold refreshments while they waited. BONUS! So yeah, excellent service on all fronts. read more

We really wanted to like this place. Fun, relaxed ambiance and a friendly, attentive staff plus a interesting menu makes this out to be the go-to place in town. Alas, the food is just average. Not horrible but doesn't stand out. The Nantucket pie was full of fish and cheap shrimp but very little lobster. Lobster soup was better but lukewarm and too bland. The last time I ate there was about 2 weeks ago. The meal was not great. My baked potato was so cold the butter wouldn't melt. The vegetables of zucchini and squash were almost raw and cold. The piece of apple walnut chicken was good. The white chocolate is waxy and not sweet? It used to be good. My mom and sister ordered steak medium rare and they were rare. Beautiful venue for a wedding. The ceremony was in the greenhouse which was sweltering however the barn and grounds and under the tent was spectacular. Highly recommend the food. We had a buffet of celeb steak and eggplant mashed potatoes. So delish. The staff was very attentive. read more

I first went to The Common Man back in 1986 and have gone a handful of times since then. Tonight I was up in the area with my family and we thought, let's stop in for old times sake. It's still got it, the food was great. They don't take reservations, which is unfortunate - especially when they tell us on the phone there will be no problem getting a table in half an hour, and then put us on a 45 minute wait list when we get there. It's unfortunate they can't be honest, or better yet, take reservations. But the food was good anyway. read more

Was super excited to try this place out since they seem to the guru's of the restaurant industry in the area! The place was hopping when we came in. We went upstairs to the more laid back bar area. It was seat yourself. It was certainly tough to find a clean table or wait staff to make that happen at first, so we just grabbed one and ended up cleaning our own table. They did have 'help yourself' cheese and crackers, so that was a nice touch. Our very polite waitress finally found her way to us and got our drink orders. We ordered the "Hot & Dirty" - Stoli Hot Vodka and olive juice with a dash of Tabasco, shaken madly and served with a celery salt rim and bleu cheese stuffed olive, "SAGE Julep" - Art in the Age SAGE Liqueur, simple syrup, fresh mint & soda water, "Maine Squeeze" - Cold River Blueberry Vodka, fresh lemonade and muddled blueberries, served on the rocks, as well as some wine. The Hot & Dirty tasted good enough, but I felt was lacking on spice and it did not come with the blue cheese stuffed olives (just regular ones) or celery salt rim as it was listed - so I was a bit let down by this one. The "Maine Squeeze" was sweet and refreshing, but didn't really notice the muddled blueberries (maybe they were strained out?), but the Sage Julep was AMAZING! Next time that will be my drink of choice. After my first drink I switched out to the "Grapefruit Basil Martini" - Hendrick's Gin, grapefruit juice, agave nectar, fresh basil, and a splash of soda water. It was very refreshing and worth a commendation as well. As for dinner we got a range of things from crab cakes to veggie burgers. My man thought his crab cakes were OK, the pizza was pretty appetizing as well, and I have to say that veggie burger may have been one of the greatest house made one I've had in a while! We finished the night with a very scrumptious White Chocolate Crème Brûlée - rich rendition of the classic with our signature white chocolate and topped it off with a lip-smacking port! we went here for my friends birthday. isat here for 2 and a half hours. My drinks were awful and when we ordered them we waited 20-30 minutes for them to even get to our table. Our server never checked on us. We ordered Buffalo chicken Mac and cheese pizzas and our server not only didn't ring them in correctly but lied to us saying they ran out of Mac and cheese and he never got the message but offered us sides of Mac and cheese to put on the pizza. We had to go to the host stand in order to get water for our table. The manager Scott came over after we asked for him. He did get our correct pizzas. He told us 10-15 and they came out after 25 minutes. Over all it was probably one of the worst experiences I've had at a restaurant. there were bigger tables that had 3 courses that finished before we even had our food that was ordered before the tables had entrees. read more

Every time we are in the area we stop and have either lunch or dinner here. It is a very kid friendly place with fun games (board games, junior trivia, chess etc), while-you-wait-self-served cheese and crackers appetizers. amazing food, chocolate treats as thank you with your receipt, great atmosphere and a lot of history! True American traditional place that makes me, an European "transplant" feel like home every time I go. Staff very welcoming and efficient.
