    Ooika - Strawberry Matcha Latte

I'd like to share how pleased I am about this tea cafe. I came here on a cold and snowy Saturday,…read morebecause my friends live nearby and I was going over their house to hang out, but I wanted to get tea first. The employees behind the counter were cheerful, and they say a phrase in Japanese that means, "welcome," which is a nice touch. The first thing I noticed in the shop was the matcha mill. They actually have two matcha mills running the entire time, and the employee later told me that it's milling and grinding the matcha to get the freshest matcha possible. Grinding and serving the matcha from its fresh ground state really makes their matcha stand out, and I could definitely tell. I was thinking about getting a cold matcha anyway because I didn't want to microwave it later, but they informed me that their machine for hot matcha wasn't working. That is not the best situation for people who wanted a hot drink, especially since it was so cold and damp outside, but I was really interested in a cold drink anyway, so it didn't really bother me. I got their red bean matcha with oat milk, and I was so happy when I drank it because it tasted like actual real matcha. I've gotten matcha at Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts and I haven't expected anything phenomenal, but I've also gotten matcha at matcha shops and the matcha just doesn't taste right because it was too sweet. This matcha, however, tasted exactly the way matcha should taste! I really, really enjoyed my drink so much, and they serve it unsweetened. I didn't even need to put sweetener in it, but I did put a tiny bit of simple syrup. All I have to say is definitely try this place. You will not be disappointed. Their matcha is amazing, and I am going back to this place every time I visit my friend's house.

You even get to see the matcha being freshly milled so you know you're getting some good quality stuff! During each of my visits, I ended up getting whatever monthly/seasonal special they were offering. The first time, I got the ube matcha latte and during my last visit, I got the peppermint chocolate latte. One thing I didn't realize during my first visit is that they give you your drink without the lid so you can sweeten it as you wish. They have syrup that you can pump into your drink. Needless to say, my drink was unsweetened the first time, but still tasty and good enough for me to return. By my second visit, I figured this out as I watched someone else add the syrup to their drink. I literally added a couple of drops because I actually enjoy it when it's not overly sweet. Also, I LOVE that they make all their drinks with oat milk so I don't have to ask for the substitution like I do at most other places. During each visit, I have always received friendly service. I would definitely return!

A slice of Boca Raton in Trenton New Jersey…read more The Biscoff Cookie Latte was a treat. Service was impeccable and the grounds were beautiful.

3 and 3/4 stars…read more Someone said a "slice of Boca"? No, not quite. (Although "not Boca" isn't necessarily a bad thing.) However you look at it, the comparison is inflated. The latte was good (not delicious), but a tad watery with a fullness of flavor missing. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon and the place was busy, but not overwhelming so. Tables were full, but it was only a short wait for me to place my simple order (by coffee shop standards) of a small, vanilla latte. However, once my order was taken (yes, the wait-server was pleasant) and I paid, I was left to figure it out. First time in and so I didn't know what the deal was: do I wait where I am? Pick up at a different counter? Ok...but where? Does someone call my drink out when it's ready (there's no put-your-name-on-a-cup thing -- which IS annoying, but apparently can be more handy than I've previously thought)? Is the order stated when the cup is placed down? The person who waited on me had vanished into a gaggle of chatting and giggling girls behind the counter, so I asked another customer. (FYI: you wait at the perpendicular counter to your left of the register.) No big deal, but it's one of those "little things" that separates the four stars from the five. I moved to the "wait" counter and observed a few drinks being placed down -- all beverages in similar cups -- and had to (again) ask someone else for help (i.e., which order was mine), as the barista who made my drink put it down and then disappeared into that gaggle of girls. (Also minor, but another separator of the three and three quarter stars from the four.) In short, the latte was good, but not the best. The service? Ok, but not the best. The ambiance? Again ok. Maybe because I've lived in SE Florida for more than 20 years, but it definitely does not have that true Boca feel. Nonetheless, given the options in the area, Hamilatte is a welcome attempt at something different, and definitely a preferred choice to Starbucks. I will return if I'm nearby, but I won't go out of my way (as I do for a truly 5-star establishment).

From there, I gave them a follow on social media and checked out their website. Sadly, the bakery is about an hour from where I live, but it's about 15-20 minutes from where I work. However, they usually close at 3 pm, which means I would be scrambling in right before they close or I may not make it at all. Bummer! Needless to say, I saw they do dessert orders for the holidays, so that was my golden opportunity! For Thanksgiving, I ordered a purple sweet potato pie and a banana pudding pie. I got to select the date that I'd be picking up my pies, which was on a day that I had to go to the office. During the week leading up to Thanksgiving, the bakery was closed for regular operations. They were only open for dessert pick ups. The pies were a hit! The banana pudding pie was everyone's favorite. Needless to say, for Christmas, a larger order was placed for banana pudding pie, salted honey pie, apple crumb pie, and mashed potato rolls. Now for Christmas, the bakery was open for regular operations and you had to pick up your pre-ordered desserts at their sister business, Melba Ice Creamery, around the corner. Because it was Christmas Eve and I already had a slew of sweets pre-ordered, I decided not to try to go to the bakery that day. Nevertheless, the goods were a hit again! The only downside is that the crust on the banana pudding pie was a little different the second time around, making it tougher to slice and get out of the pan. It was still tasty though! Would I return? Absolutely!

This past summer I have been on the lookout for the best ice cream in Mercer County and this place. Definitely takes the cake. The ice cream is soft creamy and fresh and they have such unique flavors as well as seasonal flavors. The ice cream flight is $12 for four scoops of ice cream, which I think is an amazing deal! But baby the peri 'pause had me catching the business end of a hot flash while I was running errands a while ago so I decided to finally check out Melba. Truth be told I was all but in before I spontaneously combusted at Shop Rite because they posted their newest flavor drop - Bay Leaf Stracciatella. I ADORE unique and savory ice cream flavors and had to taste it for myself. A woman on a mission, I didn't even think to ask for samples and just blurted out my order without seeing what else was on offer. Oops. Anyway I got 2 skewps on a delicate sugar cone (BTW, much like ICE, waffle cones should be abolished). It was delectable. Not at all sweet, the bitterness of the chocolate was very forward and the bay leaf was reminiscent of soup lmao. The texture was divine. I could be home legs splayed in the air conditioning right now. Instead I'm sitting outside behind Melba getting my entire life. You should too!

The place sits like a warm thought at the corner of Farnsworth and Church, glowing with the small kindnesses that make life bearable. I ordered the RAF latte with chili honey. The barista looked at me the way a chemist might before adding the final, possibly dangerous ingredient. He asked how much heat I could handle. I told him to let it burn. He smiled the smile of someone who knows exactly what that means and drizzled with confidence. The drink was something so familiar yet completely new. Smooth, rich, and somehow gentle despite the fire. The chili honey bit like a memory of something you once loved and lost, but it soothed just as quickly. I was glad I ordered the small, which was not small at all. The cup sat in my hands like a minor planet. The interior is modest in space but large in spirit. A few stools face the street, offering a view of Bordentown's quiet choreography of pedestrians and parked cars. Inside, everything feels intentional and cared for. The staff moved with the calm competence of people who genuinely enjoy what they are doing. I had the sense that if I had stayed an hour or two longer, nobody would have hurried me along. The air smelled of espresso and butter, and the crepes being carried past me looked like edible happiness. Sweet, savory, folded with the precision of small miracles. I will be back to try them. I might even show up early again on purpose. Smachna Kawa is the kind of place that reminds you the world still knows how to nourish beautiful things in small corners.
