I'd like to share how pleased I am about this tea cafe. I came here on a cold and snowy Saturday, because my friends live nearby and I was going over their house to hang out, but I wanted to get tea first. The employees behind the counter were cheerful, and they say a phrase in Japanese that means, "welcome," which is a nice touch. The first thing I noticed in the shop was the matcha mill. They actually have two matcha mills running the entire time, and the employee later told me that it's milling and grinding the matcha to get the freshest matcha possible. Grinding and serving the matcha from its fresh ground state really makes their matcha stand out, and I could definitely tell. I was thinking about getting a cold matcha anyway because I didn't want to microwave it later, but they informed me that their machine for hot matcha wasn't working. That is not the best situation for people who wanted a hot drink, especially since it was so cold and damp outside, but I was really interested in a cold drink anyway, so it didn't really bother me. I got their red bean matcha with oat milk, and I was so happy when I drank it because it tasted like actual real matcha. I've gotten matcha at Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts and I haven't expected anything phenomenal, but I've also gotten matcha at matcha shops and the matcha just doesn't taste right because it was too sweet. This matcha, however, tasted exactly the way matcha should taste! I really, really enjoyed my drink so much, and they serve it unsweetened. I didn't even need to put sweetener in it, but I did put a tiny bit of simple syrup. All I have to say is definitely try this place. You will not be disappointed. If you love matcha, this is your place! Ooika is a cute cafe offering mainly matcha, but a couple of other options as well. The space is small and brightly-lit with a few seating areas. You even get to see the matcha being freshly milled so you know you're getting some good quality stuff! During each of my visits, I ended up getting whatever monthly/seasonal special they were offering. The first time, I got the ube matcha latte and during my last visit, I got the peppermint chocolate latte. One thing I didn't realize during my first visit is that they give you your drink without the lid so you can sweeten it as you wish. They have syrup that you can pump into your drink. Needless to say, my drink was unsweetened the first time, but still tasty and good enough for me to return. By my second visit, I figured this out as I watched someone else add the syrup to their drink. I literally added a couple of drops because I actually enjoy it when it's not overly sweet. Also, I LOVE that they make all their drinks with oat milk so I don't have to ask for the substitution like I do at most other places. During each visit, I have always received friendly service. Such a cute matcha Cafe in New jersey. The lady running the place was so sweet and so kind. She had the biggest smile on her face and a place about where they warm and welcoming. There were some children / high schoolers or college students just hanging out here. So I know that this is go to spot for a lot of students for studying or just hang out. The matcha ice cream was very nice. It was very soft and not too thick or heavy. I think the Matcha was really good. It was not too bitter, and it tastes pretty standard to the matcha powder quality that I would get that's a little more on the expensive side. The Nutty flavor that was in the drink was also very nice. Would definitely recommend if you love a little bit of nutty Flavor in Your matcha. read more

Smooth and creamy- now I know what freshly milled matcha tastes, and how matcha should be served! We had the strawberry matcha latte and it was so good I would recommend it to friends and family. I am not the biggest matcha fan but Ooika served me one of my favorite cups! Matcha was earthy but not overpowering, smooth on the tongue and creamy on the palate. The strawberry compote was just right to balance out the milk and matcha. Service is friendly and our barista explained how they mill their leaves. LOVED their matcha and onigiri! Some of the best you can get in the central NJ area. I got the strawberry matcha and it ended up being the perfect amount of strawberry flavor. The sweetness was super mild which I liked and they had the option to add additional simple syrup if you prefer. They whisk each cup of matcha personally and you can tell by the quality and color. I also unexpectedly loved their onigiri. Both options (chicken and salmon) were delicious. There were few tables to sit indoors and more space outdoors, which would be a great place to chat on a sunny day. The servers were very friendly. I'm OBSESSED with Ooika and I literally visit every time I'm in the area for work! They directly source their single-origin matcha and hojicha from Japan and grind it in-house using a traditional Japanese stone mill. It is DELICIOUS. Their lattes are served unsweetened and they only use oat milk (no whole milk or other milk alternatives), but they have sweetener available to pump yourself once your order is ready. The taste is so delicious that I've purchased 20g of hojicha from them to make at home! (I already make my own matcha lattes at home lol) Staff is always so friendly and the cafe is always so clean. I also love that you see the stone mills grinding the matcha in a display case. Very cool. Parking is easy in the lot behind the building and they have limited indoor and outdoor seating available. read more

I had a matcha from here and honestly thought it was just fine. They only had oat milk as the milk option which doesn't suit my dietary needs. So I got the matcha americano, which is matcha and hot water. I added my own cream when I got back to the office. I think it was very pricey, especially considering the lack of milk options. If you like oat milk and have no dietary restrictions then it's probably very enjoyable. For me, who follows a low carb/sugar lifestyle, it didn't fully meet my expectations. Service was good and the space was quaint. I'd return if they got some more milk options. I'd really love for them to have an unsweetened almond milk. read more

Best Matcha I've ever had in my life! I will come back to this place time and time again for their Matcha. It is on the price your side, but worth every penny. They also host traditional Matcha making classes if you sign up for their text message and loyalty program. There is a bar within the café, where you can see the barista make the Matcha in front of you and they'll explain the whole process of everything that they're doing. I saw on TikTok that their mill their own matcha and I thought that was so cool so we had to check it out. Not only do they mill their own matcha, but the matcha itself is actually really good! Other than the strawberry puree, there was no added sweetener so you could really taste the matcha. It was quite earthy and vegetal, not very umami from what I remember, very creamy, not astringent at all. Paired with their selection of oat milk made a really smooth drink. Its a nice little shop with parking in the back. The inside of the shop is not too big but there are some seating on the outside. We had the ube matcha and the strawberry matcha. The matcha is fine grinded and in house. Its very fresh and they do matcha very well. I had the ube matcha which was not super ube taste had a Caramelized smoky nutty flavor. But i really like the strawberry matcha. It had a light but perfect strawberry taste the combination of both brings out the sweetness. I would give it a light match taste vs the ube tasted dense and darker flavor if you know what i mean. I very much likes both but would prefer the strawberry a little more. The service was very good. This is the first matcha shop I've been to so I can't say it's the best. I can easily say I'm a fan though. As a non coffee drinker it's good to find places where other caffeine containing brews are available, and I plan on returning to try a beverage. On my first visit I had to try the matcha and Sakura soft serve. I knew they use oat milk exclusively so I wasn't expecting a super creamy product. It was a little creamy but the flavors popped. I liked the Sakura slightly more. I also had a matcha mousse cake from here that was very good, so I'm curious about other desserts they sell. It's a cute little shop with a small amount of indoor and outdoor seating. The customer service is on point, even greeting customers as they enter. Stop by on weekdays if possible( although dessert items may be scarce) as the weekends are pretty busy. read more

I was really excited when I got the text about their sour Yuzu ice cream. I live about 40 minutes away, but planned a weekend so that I could go get it. Sadly, we were quite disappointed. It wasn't sour at all, and you can only slightly taste the yuzu. Otherwise it just taste it like cream. We also got the Yuzu Matcha with Yuzu foam. Also, a very mild flavor. If you just lick the phone, that is the most Yuzu, you will taste. But you can't taste it at all after mixing the drink. I was disappointed by this experience, but I did enjoy my previous one. So I love matcha. Not matcha lattes, maybe in a cocktail if I'm feeling frisky, but I have always loved the earthy, fresh, and centering nature that a perfect cup of matcha can give me. It's hard to find good ceremonial grade matcha in the US without importing it... but when local wagashi artist, Maru Mami, shared a freshly made hot cup of Ooika's matcha with me I was HOOKED! I can't drink the more common stuff from the grocery stores without thinking "ah... if only this were as fresh as Ooika." The store is small and intimate with very few seats but great lighting. As soon as you enter you can smell not just tea, but the sea. They import their limestone to grind the tea to a perfect texture. It's amazing to see the process! The store can be a little loud because of the constant noise of the machines but it is like white noise since it's a constant and consistant whir. The staff that served me was super sweet and informative. They had short brown hair and wore stylish long black shirt and black skirt but made all drinks with lightning speed and precision. I noticed I never reviewed this wonderful cafe. I came all the way from Rockland County, NY. I did a search for the nearest matcha spot to Englishtown and this came up. We visited first after Thanksgiving and we instantly knew with was a great find. Stone milled matcha in house & working with the best farmers in Japan. We had the pleasure to meet Marc and he prepared a bowl of koicha for us and share a great conversation. We got a matcha latte for our drive home afterwards. We than returned back last week for the Matcha Intro class. Before the class we stopped by the cafe for a delicious latte yet again. Marc is so knowledgeable and we appreciate that he stayed after to chat more about other aspects of matcha other than its health benefits, which many aren't there to learn that. If you feel crazy driving almost an hr across state lines to get matcha here, don't bc it's basically what everyone did, it seems. Maybe some live closer and others farther but this little shop on a "main street" of a small town is a pilgrimage destination! I came to get the freshest matcha available to me. It is by far the most vibrant green matcha I've ever had this year. The flavor isn't my favorite preference and it's a little expensive vs sazen, but the freshness can't be matched, AND it always feels good to buy from a local small business. The line on a weekend when we went was quite long, and it takes a while to get through. They make the drinks 2-3 at a time, by hand in a chawan, so don't expect to be in and out. I had a strawberry and a regular matcha. They were OK, but at home I prefer to add a higher dose at a different ratio. Also enjoyed the hojicha they have. Very nutty. They have lots of different matcha and other drinks to choose from with fresh fruit incorporated, which I really love. I was really impressed with this place! I know this is a newer place in New Jersey, and it is nearby this bakery called gingered peach (which I also highly recommend). I feel like there aren't a lot of good specialized Matcha cafes. Maybe in Princeton there is a placed called "junbi" but the matcha is not as fresh as this one. If you're a matcha fan, I would definitely hit up this one. I personally am a HUGE fan of Matcha, I am always looking for a vibrant green color that is smooth to the taste, and this was simply awesome. They whisked the tea on the spot and they used a scale to ensure the taste proportions were right. I can tell there was quite the craft and care for these drinks. Not to mention, default is oatly milk which is good for lactose intolerant people like me. I Was impressed not only with the aesthetics of this café and drink and in space, but the fact that they freshly grind their Matcha makes for a great cafe experience. you can definitely smell the aroma of it throughout the room. It's a calming space, with lots of natural lighting, and would be a great place to chat with friends or study/work. While the matcha is good to grab and go, I do think to make the price more worth it, I would definitely linger longer in this cafe. read more

I am so glad I came across an Instagram video about this place! I don't live anywhere near the area but just really wanted to give it a try. I am relatively new to the matcha game but I have done extensive research on what "good" matcha is. First off, how amazing that there is a mill in store. I bought some matcha for my at home lattes but it was the experience in the store that really sealed the deal. I got the Cold Strawberry Matcha and it was delicious. So creamy and such quality matcha that was a beautiful bright green color. We also got the Matcha Soft Serve and it was amazing. My partner typically gets stomach aches when he has soft serve but he had this with no problem. The service was also so wonderful and everyone was so informative. I'm embarrassed but also not embarrassed to say that we came here in the morning and went about our day in town and then came back before closing because we enjoyed it so much. I wish Ooika was closer to me but I'll swing by again for some quality matcha! read more
