We got take-out from The Coal Bunker, and it was awesome. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which has a delicious mustard slaw and fresh pickle slices. We got the Firebox Chicken Sandwich - cooked perfectly and the bread was great - texas toast. We had mac n cheese, and a beet and kale salad on the side. Everything was great, but I think the star of the sow was the chili. OMG. The chili is sooo good! We also got some amazing cans of local craft beer to go. The prices were very fair, the portions are generous, and the food is delicious. Will definitely return next time I am in the area. read more

Gave this place three tries and each was more of a disaster than the first. First -- they ran out of food. Second- slow service, entree was cold and small portions. Ran out of dessert. Last time was the last time. 1) waitress was older and drunk or impaired on some way. Guy at the bar looked like his shower curtain is a confederate flag. Waitress went on and on and on about organic everything. Except they were out of half of it. We ordered, there was a large ish party already there but done and just chatting with drinks. Three other parties of 2-4 came were served and went. My friend and I were chatting and after approx 30 minutes tries to wave down the weaving server to no avail. 15 more minutes-- got her attention and she brushed us off and said "it's coming this isn't fast food it's ORGANIC. 20 minutes we are both hangry AF and it's getting to be closing time and when I get up to GO FIND THE SERVER (bartender was busy watching sports) to cancel order she comes running and said they "ran out is food because of that big party" but they could make us the organic chicken and add a salad. We made the mistake of saying yes because we were hangry and it's fallbrook, everything is closing and we didn't want fast food. Well we got fast food. 4 chicken strips. And a salad. And a beer. For nearly 80 bucks. Not x two. That was our total list of order. We split it. Waitress/impaired server was indignant at our complaint. ITS ORGANIC. Stumbled across this place driving through the area. They opened a couple weeks ago and it's amazing! I had the firebox chicken sando w mac & cheese which they said was their signature combo. It didn't disappoint. My wife has the pulled pork and was happy w that dish as well. For the beer lovers, they carry Pure Brewing cans which are hard to find. Just visited The Coal Bunker in Fallbrook for the first time. I'd heard great things but didn't have time to dine in, so got carryout instead. The Bunker Burger is intoxicating and a culinary delight; one of the best hamburgers I've ever had: fresh ground chuck, Gruyère cheese, caramelized onions, Bunker Sauce, and bacon on a brioche bun---grilled to perfection and worth every penny. The mac n' cheese is a worthy side, featuring a creamy, four-cheese blend and buttered, toasted bread crumbs. While it was a simple carryout meal, the food exceeded every expectation. The hostess was friendly and the food was ready when I arrived. Parking is behind the restaurant on E. Elder. My only critique is for ownership to light their exterior sign. The restaurant disappears at night and you could easily drive past and not know it's even there. The Coal Bunker is a wonderful addition to the Friendly Village and I can't wait for my next meal! read more

I went here for the first time recently for a takeout dinner since El Meson closed. Obviously, they've just begun their business, as the decor wasn't fully developed yet. Three large train pics on the wall, attempting to coincide with the caboose across the street. To the left of the ordering area they featured all available drinks--for the life of me I don't know why restaurants think it's attractive to show a bunch of bottled/canned drinks on display. There has to be a more attractive display available. The menu was nothing special as it featured dishes that you could order at any one of a number of FB restaurants--burgers, sandwiches, and mac 'n cheese, amongst others. I saw very little that differentiated this restaurant from the multitude of others. I decided on trying the mac 'n cheese and the Orzo salad. The mac/cheese was something I could've made, with au gratin on top, nothing notable. I liked the salad, as it wasn't a traditional salad, more like a pasta salad. I enjoyed the flavors and think they mixed well together. The food taker was very nice and quite helpful. The order came out in a timely manner and the mac 'n cheese was still quite warm, even after a car ride home. Not very confident that I'll go back unless the above mentioned items change. There are plenty of restaurants just like this one, more established, better decor, better food. Time will tell us if this one graduates to above mediocre status. read more

I'm sorry but this restaurant had a musty smell, the waiting room (Guess you call it that) has old furniture which could be the cause of the smell. We're from LA and we came out here for Pala Casino. On the way there, we found this spot and stopped by to check it out. We were blown away!! It has a small town vibe with a big punch in tasty food! The beer selection is impressive, but the food is definitely what keeps the people coming back. I had the sliders (chicken and pork), hubby had the bunker burger, and we shared the nachos. My husband NEVER comments on sandwiches as any big deal or great with the exception of his usual Chicken Parmisan sandwiches ... and we dine out weekly. HOWEVER.... Coal Bunker has become the exception to all the years -of his ho-hum lunches. I am still off balance that he went on and on about the Chicken Teriaki Honey sandwich. He even asked to speak to the chef and owner... Jeff. Jeff was so professional and kind as Tom gushed about the delicious lunch. Ian was our waiter and so accommodating and friendly. I must admit also.. I ordered the chicken pot pie and it was equally as fabulous , the best Chicken pot pie I have ordered. Guess what however... it was Jeff's wife and co-owner's culinary delight and sooo delicious . So, in closing... as you pull up from the road ... the Coal Bunker has a non-chalet appearance but as our daugter Beth insisted, just wait until you taste the food. Wow, was she right. Between the food and service would not recommend. We had came in to originally order to go but decided to sit and stay. Not a busy night at all had to wait for table to be cleared. This is usually not an issue at all the reason I would mark so low is because when we got to our table service had hardly checked in on us. I had ordered the chicken press sandwich which had lacked flavor and was very bland. The price for this was way over priced. The side salad that came with it has no dressing. read more

I did a takeout/door dash order, because I was unable to leave to pickup food today. While I would give 5 stars for freshness & flavor, the salad was truly lacking as a "whole" salad. I ordered a FULL Mediterranean salad ($15) and added chicken due to the fact I have lupus, and eat lean protein with most of my meals. I don't ever mind paying extra when I add on either. By the time I tipped, payed door dash and for my $15 salad, it was well over $20 for my order. It's not an inexpensive meal, but was excited to try! There was barely anything on my salad, and truthfully, I can't believe the size was an actual full salad. It fit in a small soup bowl. Again, everything tasted great, but there as only a few strips of chicken, 1 1/2 olives.. no joke. Not even artichoke heart pieces to make up one heart. I had 2 cut up pieces and a very small leaf. I'm still hungry, and the only reason I ordered door dash was because I'm meal prepping & didn't have time to cook for lunch today. For the amount of money to what you receive, I won't be ordering again. I'll post the salad from today, and another Mediterranean salad from another locally owned family restaurant. That salad, for $15 at Taverna, comes fresh, with grilled, whole chicken breasts, whole pieces of freshly grilled vegetables, tzatziki, hummus and many fixings (it's a complete salad). Everything is locally made. I can easily split it between 2 days. I'm only posting this, to show the comparison because it's the same price, both locally owned. Maybe I caught Coal Bunker on a hard afternoon, but I thought I'd share my experience. I love supporting local, so hopefully this will be received well! read more

The Bunker Burger is one of the best hamburgers that I have ever eaten in my long history of devouring burgers. The burger alone earns five stars. Wish it had fries or chips as a side, but their healthy options (I had squash) are nice alternatives. Also wish it had fountain drinks instead of canned drinks. Fantastic! What a cool place. The staff were friendly and helpful. The menu has enough options to allow choices, yet is small enough to not overwhelm. They serve craft beer & wine. We had the bunker burger & chips, TCB Mac n Cheese, Bagel dogs, Shepherds pie and for desert we had the brownie. I will start with the Shepherds pie as it was a disappointment. My husband and I went to The Coal Bunker in Fallbrook today, 7/1/23, after seeing the restaurant on an email from Yelp listing ten favorite North County burger restaurants. We arrived at about 1 p.m. and walked up the steps to the bar/restaurant. A waitress was at a computer nearby and barely lifted her head to say "give me a minute and I'll be with you". We could only see 2 tables with guests seated in the room. After a several minutes of watching her inputting what I think was someone's order, and no further acknowledgement of us, we left. About a block away we found Harry's Sports Bar and Grill. They were welcoming and served a great burger and beer! So disappointed in The Coal Bunker. Unfortunately one person can ruin a person's opinion of a restaurant. read more
