I've had the opportunity to try Porky Butts a couple of different ways. My family and I decided to…read moredo dinner one night so we all met up at Porky Butts. Their menu is vast and full of variety and I felt myself feeling nervous attempting to decide. Luckily, my sister and brother in law had the idea of ordering several items on one of their platters. I thought this was the perfect way to feed 6 people. I believe we got a few other things along with it, like the potato salad, an order of just burnt ends and an extra order of corn bread. There was something for everyone! We got to try their BBQ chicken and turkey as well as some pulled pork and ribs. I was happily impressed. I also loved how clean the restaurant and bathrooms were. There was ample staff around to bring out the meals, pick up some plates that were empty, and refill waters. Just recently, my workplace catered Porky Butts BBQ for our meal for inventory. They brought all the food, and napkin dispenser, utensils, and plates along with enough staff to set up and serve for 4 hours. The staff were genuinely kind, polite, and professional. Greeting each employee as they came into the breakroom and were excited to serve us. It was such a delight. The food was just as delicious as when I tried it in the restaurant. We got to choose from beans, corn bread, pulled pork, sliced BBQ chicken, and mac and cheese. They had buns available if you wanted to eat the pork or chicken as a sandwich and several different BBQ sauces to add on if you chose. They also had butter and honey packets for the bread. Just like my visit at the restaurant I was impressed and so full by the time I finished my meal. Porky Butts is a proven winner!! I'd definitely visit their restaurant again soon and if I need anything catered, I'll absolutely think about Porky Butts!

I was salivating over pictures of ribs online recently, and went in search of something delicious…read morein Omaha as I have yet to be able to cook bbq properly myself. I headed to Porky Butts after reading rave reviews. I bought the Family Platter, said to feed 2-3. I can see that. It seems like a lot of food. A half-rack of ribs is plenty for a small family to try when it comes with 1/3 lb. each of two more meats. My go-to is pulled pork, and just to be different, I made this dinner a pork-a-pallooza by choosing smoked ham as the second meat. The ribs are really good -- the meat comes off the bone easily and has great flavor. The pulled pork was disappointing, though. It seemed really wet, and not from sauce. Like overcooked, too much steam, maybe? Who know. But the ham! OMG, the surprise entry in this extravaganza was soooo delicious! Not too smoky, not overly salty, tender and, dare I say, worthy of being a main selection when I come back! Two large containers of sides were both great. The beans were saucy, smoky, and filled with threads of, I dont know, brisket? The mac and cheese was flavorful and very creamy. I didnt want to wait for dinner after my first taste test! Cornbread is moist and delicious and that's before any butter or honey. Folks behind the counter were quick and friendly (it was a to-go order). And even at 2 in the afternoon tables were populated and carryout was hopping. As for carryout, I wonder why the sauce containers are so tiny. Be loud -- be proud, and use less plastic with a single container that hold three of those tiny ones. And that pulled pork, it made a good sandwich, but it wasnt A+ I will be back though. The variety of sides looks amazing and the sandwiches were very enticing!

Paired with their slightly sweet and runny barbecue sauce, OMG, is a delight. We got the sampler platter option 1 and easily fed two adults. The baked beans were the next standout item with ground beef balls inside which made for a wonderful textural experience that differs from normal baked beans. The brisket and pulled pork were nothing to write home about and wouldn't order by itself in the future. Although 100% be back to try more of their delicious sides and ribs smoked to perfection! You order at the counter and if you're dining in they'll bring your order to you, although we came into order take out. I couldn't recommend more ordering ahead and picking up if that's the case. We waited about 35 minutes for our food to be ready and saw plenty of people with phone/online orders come in and pick up their food. They have a classic diner vibe with grays and reds with not a whole lot of seating, but enough to push some tables together if you had a larger group of 8 or so. They also have a sign that says "Good food not fast food" and that held true. Worth the wait!

Maybe I have too high of expectations. I've been to a lot of BBQ joints down in Texas, Florida, the…read moreCarolina's, etc. What can Omaha offer? I'm sure you can find decent BBQ still in Nebraska, but this isn't it. First of all, the price of BBQ is outrageous. I think that's a product of this economy, but we spent over $30 on a 3 meat combo and an extra side. One person could probably have this for their meal, which is a decent amount of food, but this is very pricey for what you get. SMALL sides, and the sample you get 3 spare ribs, 5-6 brisket slices, and maybe 1/2 a link of sausage. Our sides were the Pit chips, Mac n cheese, and a small sliver of corn bread. Nothing else- no drinks, we're just interested in the food. Normally from a "true" Texas BBQ joint, you'll get an entire loaf of bread with your meats - we didn't get any bread at all. If you get a sandwich like their brisket sandwich, you'll get the missing element, but if you have a combo with just the meats, it might go a long way to making the experience better. How was the food? We got our food to go. Give it a little time to rest before opening it up. The smells were decent, so I knew that it was smoked meats (the bare minimum requirement for actual BBQ). Let's start with the sausage. Nothing special - probably bought from the grocery store next door and thrown in the smoker. No cheese in the sausage. It was OK, but wasn't great. It reminded me of an Oscar Meyer kilbasa with a little more kick (spices). Real Texas BBQ like a Rudy's sausage blows this away - not even in the same league. I appreciate the attempt, but if they are serving this stuff, they need to go back to the drawing board. It absolutely does not taste or look like they make their own sausage, but I would love to hear if they do. It would be shocking if they say that they make their own sausage. Brisket was probably the star of the combo. The first few pieces were tender and had a nice arc when you put your finger in the middle. Paired with their BBQ sauce (the sweet is better than their spicy sauce), if it was a one meat combo and they gave me more brisket, then I would have been more satisfied. If you're dragged there, go for the brisket. But I think a good bbq joint needs good ribs. The cooking was pretty spot on - not fall off the bone, but relatively clean bones. The spare ribs might have been a better choice. The bark on the ribs were decent, but just my preference, I like to have saucey ribs. These were maybe sauced and then thrown on the grill, but maybe not. The bark is pretty salty. Maybe good for drunk food, but they could do better on the ribs. Adding their sweet sauce at the end on the grill would make these ribs MUCH better, because all the elements are there, it is just the execution that lacked. My biggest problem was really the portions. The sides were REALLY small. The pit chips were just kettle chips (nice and crispy) with a HEAVY dose of spices. Not bad, but not amazing, and that tells you what you need to know about the sides. Mac and cheese was decent, but can you give me more than 1/2 a spoon full? For $3.00, I would expect about twice or three times the size of the container we got. The small portions sizes make me feel ripped off - when you pull it out of the bag and immediately say "really"? Everyone agrees that it should be like a $1 side if you were to say that you got your money's worth. If you charged $3 for a side, give a decent portion, would ya?!! Finally the corn bread. I love a "famous" corn bread from a competing bbq restaurant, and compared to them, this is rather disappointing. It certainly is sweet, and the taste is ok, but honestly, the way it tasted, it almost exactly tasted like a yellow cake mix from a grocery store. At the "famous" place, you have some grittiness from the corn - this didn't have much of that. It was fluffy and crumbly, so it had potential, but the experience wasn't there. The corn meal grittiness, kicking it up to double the amount, maybe triple, it would have been much better. As it stood, it was a small slice of yellow cake. So overall, you and your drunk buddies going here for drinks and getting some drunk food, I'm sure that's how this place survives. But the food - the reason why we went - it's not something you walk away and say that was an incredible meal! Small portion sizes, expensive food, and just OK flavor, it definitely wasn't worth it. I would say it is most definitely salvageable with some tweaks, but as it stands, I would put this in the mid- to bottom-tier of BBQ I've eaten in Omaha. Probably won't be back unless I hear that things have changed.

Definitely a hidden gem, service was fast and friendly. Food was amazing with big portions and…read moreprice was very reasonable for what we got. Definitely coming back!
