In my opinion J's has become the best bbq spot in Omaha. Ribs, pulled pork and sausage are all really tasty; not over smoked, nice kick from the rub and always cooked to perfection. Their smashburger is elite, especially for a bbq joint, the sides are all top knotch (the streetcorn is my favorite), their tacos might be the best value on the whole menu with the amount of meat you get. The showstopper is the brisket. Perfect every time. Throw it on a burger and you've got a dangerous combination! I love taking people there for lunch, it's only a few blocks from the office and it's always fast from order to table. Well I'm going to this review with a shoutout to Fooligan Eats. Happen to view their segment on J's and that decided dinner tonight. While I haven't tried every BBQ establishments in Omaha, I can't give this one enough stars. Some of the best BBQ and sides I've enjoyed. Tender, juicy ribs, brisket and the pull pork, OMG. Given what I previously viewed I had to try them all. The BBQ sauce was a little weak but you don't want sauce to taint the flavor the meats provided. Order at the counter...we were kind of late for the dinner hour so they had run out of some things...so must be popular amongst those who know. I got a single smash burger .... Yummmm. Out of fries so I ordered street corn, but didn't realize the amount of time it takes to make it soooo, we got our food before it was ready and it never made it to our table. We went to this location at the end of the night, so I won't complain too much about some of the items that they did not have. They were out of a lot of sides and sausage. The brisket however, made up for all the things that they were missing. It was so seasoned and so tender that I could have probably eaten a couple pounds by myself. I'm so glad my fiance made the executive decision to buy an extra side of the brisket. It also came with pulled pork it was good and the ribs are okay, they were A little tough. Delicious!!! I have had this restaurant on my list to try and finally made it there... no regrets! Will definitely return! Follow on instagram for awesome daily highlights. I had the grilled cheese with shredded pork special... it was a large sandwich, they didn't skimp on the cheese or meat! It was delicious. I heard a lot about their Smashburger so I was excited to stop in! Service was amazing very friendly and quick. I think what I was not prepared for was the thickness of the burger. I guess my personal preference for a Smashburger is it to be super thin this was a little thick, which surprised me. And actually a bit chewy. My picture does not do justice for what it looks like. I should've taken the button off. The sauce was more on the mustard side than I expected. I think maybe it was mustard mixed with thousand island? Not really sure. Ordered a side of beans which were yummy. Next time I go back, I will stick with barbecue because I know I like their barbecue. Great meats!! I've enjoyed their pulled pork, sausages, brisket, and ribs. I love all their sides- so it's hard to choose just two. The street corn is the best! Same with their brisket street corn dish. Hours can be a little tricky, and they do run out of meats, so make sure to make it at a good time!! First time going here. We were very disappointed about the portion sizes. Bbq sauce is watery. Also found a hair in the meat. We came there after hearing about it on Facebook. Positive note, the staff are really nice. We didn't have anything to complain about until we went home. I think the bbq sauce is homemade which may be why it's thin. I love everything I've ever eaten here, except for the other day. I ordered the four brisket tacos. Apparently it's a special going on for $10. These were the most ridiculously put together tacos I'd ever had. There was probably 1 oz of meat on each taco. Sad example of what a highly rated barbecue joint should be capable of. I've eaten here before and I've always been pleased with. Not today! I compared my tacos to their Facebook post and they definitely aren't selling you what they're advertising. About every six month I like to break down a random restaurant worth noting, good and bad. As a bit of a self proclaimed BBQ critic specifically, I'll say this is currently THE BEST offering you can find for smoked meat in the Omaha, NE area. Location/Environment: very small mom and pop located in a strip mall. Walking in the place is very small (I suspect this place sticks around and grows to a better location) but you take a look around, the place is very busy and it was clearly supported at lunch time by all those hard working tradespeople who value a hearty meal. They aren't wrong. The overall like amd ordering and straight forward. No gimmicks. Service: Not much to evaluate here. Just stopped in for a to-go order. The front lady who took my order was pleasant and payment was with a card. I will say that the food took about 5-10 minutes for a basic meal. Not super fast but not slow either. I'd say considering the other marks, this isn't Terrible but could be improved. Food: I ordered the Full Monty: a pulled pork sandwich with a mix of sausage and brisket because I HAD to test all the meats. Al acarte to try is by the 1/2lb and the sampler is $34! Probably needs a cheaper option. The smoke flavor is fantastic! The smoke ring is definitely pronounced throughout all meats I had. You can definitely tell they smoke their meats and don't cut corners on the cooking, very much appreciated in its core flavor. I will say the bark is there but very thin. I think they could benefit from a bit more pepper or seasoning flavor in my eyes as it's subtle for my tastes but the process is the hardest and the meat is excellently moist (not dry like so many restaurants!). The sausage and pork also mirror this assessment, really good foundation. The house sauce is served on the side as it should and is a hearty mix of vinegar tang yet still sweet. It's different from most and though not needed a unique twist to make their overall flavor their own. Love it. The slaw is a super sweet variety, similar to a sugar KFC creamy consistency but the ingredients are superb and has bit more mustardy tang. I don't like a lot of mustard but this isn't bad. I think its among the better slaws out there. I had to ask for pickles as they did not offer them. It's worth it to add them and they use crispy thick ones, not the afterthought of soggy messy cheap ones. PRICE: always subject to our ever changing economy but I'd say they are above the fast food quality so prices do reflect that. There's no value menu but real BBQ shouldn't and it's appropriately priced. I'd only say they'd benefit by having a cheap option to try them if it's your first time. Overall, Omaha lacks in great BBQ. I miss the old restaurant "Smoke Pitt" but among all offerings in the Omaha metro area, this one is the best I've found. Comparatively, Porky Butts is in their league (they have a more comprehensive menu but it's hit and miss quality), but take the cake over Jim's Rim Haven, Wayne's New Skoo, or Dick's BBQ. We finally made it to Nebraska and Donny wanted barbecue! This makes 6 barbecue spots on our cross-country road trip. The pricing per ounce is a little on the high side for barbecue, but the brisket was good. I really liked the street corn. Best I've had outside of California street vendors. My new favorite BBQ spot! Since the departure of Amarillo, I've been at wit's end. There a couple of other good places, but this place is my number one. At 11:20 on Saturday morning, there was a line. The portions are generous. BBQ is always a little more expensive, but the portion size delivers value. I finally got a chance to try J's Smokehouse and I was quite impressed. I've had this place on my radar for a while and am glad to have another solid bbq option in Omaha. I had the brisket and ribs and my wife had the pulled pork sandwhich. I ordered the fatty brisket and it was melt in your mouth tender.....not too much smoke flavor unfortunately but did have a solid bark flavor which I enjoyed. The ribs were very smoky which I like and were tender with good seasoning! The bbq sauces were great as well! Very thin sauces the have spicy and original. The spicy is very hot in my opinion (I like heat but this was too much to enjoy for me). The original was excellent and paired well with our meal. My wife absolutely loved her pulled pork sandwich. There's not much about J's that I can say that probably hasn't already been said.... ....but I'll at least give it a shot. I'll start off by saying I'm not a Barbecue and smoked meat expert. My focus is generally steaks and fine dining. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a nice slab of ribs every now and then J's has quickly built an incredible reputation in Omaha as one of the best (if not THE best) BBQ joint in the city. I was a bit skeptical going in, but I can say without a doubt that they've exceeded my expectations. The service sizes were extremely generous - this entire set of grub had me out the door for less than 70 bucks after a tip. The meal was all cooked to perfection, tender, juicy, and extremely flavorful. All the descriptive words you could ever wish to hear at a place like this The baked beans were incredible, and probably some of the best I've tried recently, and the Mac N Cheese tasted great. The house BBQ sauce was simple and delicious - no need for 10 different kinds to try. The one was perfect (although there was a spicy option available too). Service was typical for a barbecue place - order at the window, grab your drink, seat yourself, and everyone working was great. In all, I would 100% return. I'd been wanting to try J's for a while and so on a hot night in July we ordered some of the brisket tacos and a Pulled pork sandwich with sides. The ingredients on the tacos were fresh and very tasty, but the tortillas were oversized for the amount of ingredients. I would opt not to order these again because they are done much better at other local venues. The pulled pork was excellent. The sides were average, nothing special. Our family showed up just prior to closing on a Friday night. We weren't positive they were still serving but they either were or decided to. We picked our table and looked the menu over deciding on the 3-5 Texans Platter with a sampling of it all. The tray came out loaded and so impressive looking I took a pic! I can be quite a skeptic when it comes to food so at that point I was just hoping for the best and it did not disappoint! I carefully tasted each dish, brisket, pulled pork, sausage, street corn, baked beans, and Mac n cheese. The flavors were great and suited everyone at our table! I could easily have made a meal on the meat alone but would not have wanted to miss out on those sides that so perfectly complemented the meats. It's been mentioned before that the beans were almost too sweet but good, the street corn was interesting and flavorful and the potatosalad was great! Good food, friendly service, my only complaint would be price but what isn't expensive anymore. Best thing to do is to follow them on social media when they are having deals. I got the half slab ribs Mac and cheese and baked beans. My boyfriend got ribs Mac and cheese and sausage (just fyi/ heads up the sausage is kind of a small portion for the price). The ribs are very pepper crusted I wasn't a huge fan of that but they were tender which I loved. I put there spicy bbq sauce on them and that definitely took the flavor up a notch so if you can handle some heat I recommend you try that sauce lol. Mac and cheese was really good just needed a little salt. Baked beans were really good but almost too sweet and would be amazing if they added some brisket in it. Pulled pork, brisket, ribs are the staple here. Sandwiches, and platters are all available with their two BBQ sauces. We recommend their spicy sauce. Full flavor and just enough heat. If you can't decide, we recommend the Full Monty to get a little bit of everything on a bun. Eat it with a fork if necessary. Counter Service is quick and pleasant. If you are a Legionnaire, be sure to let them know. They love their veterans here. Casual dining with an unassuming crowd of veterans, local police, sheriff's office, local community leaders, blue collar workers and just friendly locals are the norm here. Roll in get a great bite to eat, be prepared to wait in line during the lunch rush... meet your friends and make a few new local friends and chat about local issues. We have a pizza place we go to as our normal Friday night outing, but was in the mood for something different this week.
