Stopped by after golfing on 5/22/24.We bought a rib dinner with baked beans and potato salad . A friend bought a brisket sandwich. The meats were dry and tougher than beef jerky. The ribs and brisket was some of the worst bbq we've ever had. We were actually shocked. This place just reopened after a fire about a year or so ago .They had lines practically around the corner. Another Omaha staple that I have driven past 1000 times but never checked out until last week. I'm upset with myself that I waited so long to check this spot out! I went with the back rib sandwich with saucy fries. The ribs were really tender and fell off the bone. They give you sauce options of mild, medium, or hot. I went with mild which had really good flavor and a nice sweet taste. The fries were krinkle cut with are my favorite type the saucy ones go crazy! I went to this hole in the wall on Ames Avenue for lunch one day, when I was hankering for some BBQ. They had a drive thru but I decided to walk in and check out the joint, and when I say joint, I mean joint ... this place is a tiny little eatery with a fairly decent selection of items but not much room to sit and eat. I typically grade a BBQ restaurant on their brisket, so I selected the brisket sandwich with beans and cole slaw. The sandwich was top notch, as were the sides. I would definitely visit this spot again, with so many choices on the menu, I will have to hit it quite a number of times in order to sample all of the options they have available. I am a BBQ fanatic. I seek out good BBQ in every city I visit. I grew up in Omaha and worked in North Omaha as a police officer in the 1980's. We are visiting relatives for a few weeks and someone at a bible study recommended Jim's to me a couple days ago. Today we stopped there and ordered $60 worth of food. A full rack of ribs, beans, a rib tip sandwich and some chili cheese fries. On a scale of 1-10, I'm giving Jim's a 1. We would have been better off pulling into McDonalds for a couple Big Mac's. The ribs were barely cooked. I had to fight to get the meat off the bones. Badly undercooked, yet dry and tuff as shoe leather. Same with the rib tips. The meat was difficult to chew and dry. The beans tasted like they came out of a can and had zero meat in them as we hoped. My wife ordered the chili cheese fries by mistake and I refused to even try them. I have eaten beef brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs and sausage that is a perfect 10 out of ten. I know what great BBQ looks and tastes like. I've eaten at most of the great BBQ restaurants in Hill Country outside of Austin, as well as most of the great BBQ restaurants in Austin. When we return to Phoenix in November, we will eat at Little Miss BBQ, which was once the second highest rated restaurant on Yelp, with over 200 5-star reviews. Often times, people want so badly to support their local BBQ restaurant, they give 3 and 4 star reviews to a product that is undeserving. It is also possible that they have never experienced truly magnificent BBQ, smoked for exactly the correct amount of time and not slathered with sauce to hide how dry it is. We will continue to visit Omaha each fall and seek out good BBQ. We will not return to Jim's and I feel it is important to warn others who cherish good BBQ, to avoid Jim's and keep searching for a BBQ restaurant where the owner is present and the meat is properly smoked and not pulled out of the smoker two hours early and served. read more

I feel bad I even have to do this. If you've seen my previous review you know that this place is a staple of my childhood and adolescence. I remember leaving the barbershop to pick up a slab as a kid. I remember pulling through for saucy fried while working nearby as a teenager. The last two times I tried to give business to Jim's I was baffled. 1) My son had a game. I had 30 minutes to spare. I decided to go make an order (just for saucy fries) and wound up sitting at the intercom for 10 minutes. I figured the equipment was down and pulled forward. Soon, I heard a car behind me placing an order. I thought, "I'll just order at the window." I sat at the window for 20 minutes. No greeting. No mention. Today, I went as a second attempt. Again, just for saucy fries. 35 minutes to spare. I was able to order on the intercom. Then I sat for 25 minutes. FOR FRIES!!!!! No discussion. No, "Sir, there will be a wait." I'm not even sure this place even sells food at this point. I'm disappointed and sad that I have to lose/give up on another childhood staple of mine. Saw Jim's as I was going through the neighborhood and decided to stop to try their barbecue. Jim's has a drive up or you can order from inside. No tables. Only about 7 stools and a small (narrow) counter you can eat on if you don't get it to go. I decided to try the pork barbecue sandwich. You choose your sauce; mild, medium or hot. I had medium. Not bad. Got a side of slaw and a peach cobbler for dessert. Both were decent. The pork did not have a lot of smoke. Thought it was pretty plain to be quite frank. As I travel around the 402 trying all the BBQ in the city... I had a friend advise me I needed to try Jim's rib haven..he advised me to call ahead and to try the Boney box..First of all a name like Boney box had a frown and a discussed look on my face..He started to tell me it is a box of various types of ribs assembled in a box.. I called ahead and was placed on hold for what seemed like a week but was only six minutes my impatient behavior hung up and called back and they took my order told me it would be ready at 530pm, but I was in route to try this Boney box... I got there about 5:17pm and had my food ready and had to get some fries to go with this box... This is one of my favorite places to get food in Omaha!!! Wait time for food is not long and the drive thru is convenient if you're in a hurry. Saucy fries are my favorite thing to order there! I get them with the medium sauce, and you get a lot of fries for your money. You can easily make the saucy fries a meal! The ribs are fantastic as well. Definitely love coming to Jim's! First Tim visiting Jim's. The place is pretty easy to get to and it had ample parking. Jim's has a drive through and most of the business that I observed while there was take out. The dinning area is small, and would not accommodate a large lunch crowd. If you don't like up close and personal dinning I would recommend the take out. I ordered the Pork Rib Sandwich with the medium sauce and a Coke. One of the drink options is kool-aid which kind of reminded me of the good ole days when canned soda was for the kids whose folks had a little more money. The Rib Sandwich consisted of 3 very meaty spare ribs and 2 slices of bread. The ribs were fresh and cooked perfectly. The meat did not fall off the bone to the point that I needed to use a fork to eat it. The meat had a lightly smoked taste that was not so overwhelming that it took away from the taste of the pork. The sauce was on point medium with a little bite. I will try the hot next time. The cost is kind of high. Keep in mind most BBQ places are. Jim's is not any more expensive than any other BBQ place in the city. Spoke to the owner Jim, super nice guy and former Devil Dog (Marine) he runs a pretty squared away operation and seems to love what he is doing. Good food and great vibe. Jim's is an Omaha BBQ staple. It's been open as long as I can remember. My first experience with Jim's was being a student at nearby North High. Whether it was out on the football field during marching band drills, or sitting in econ class staring down at Jim's tiny little rib shack from the third floor, there was always the subtle, enticing smell of fresh smoked ribs wafting through the air. My friends and I would go to Jim's regularly, either walking into the tiny building to order or opt for drive through. And the ribs? Absolutely delicious. In my mind, what sets Jim's apart from other local BBQ joints is that they serve booth pork and beef ribs. And their spicy sauce is seriously so spicy, it's intense. Order up some Jim's for you next backyard BBQ, or a Husker game. You won't be disappointed. I have been hoping for some for some real BBQ in Omaha ever since a couple of the serious BBQ places closed a few years ago . I know everybody loves this place, but for me, as much as I wanted this to be awesome......it just wasn't. Spent 20 minutes waiting in the drive thru line, only to be not greeted by rude staff. When I get BBQ, I get ribs, and these ribs were fatty and overcooked in my opinion. Sauce that was supposed to be spicy had no kick to it, and they left out part of our order. The peach cobbler was absolutely fresh, home made, and delicious, but that is not the reason I went there. Prices are also a bit high for what you get (had to ask for pickles and bread, which should come standard at any true BBQ joint). If you are visiting Omaha, be advised that this restaurant is not in a transitioning area like Benson, or in a tourist friendly area like The Old Market or Midtown Crossing where you are going to want to ride your bike, or get out and stretch your legs and walk around. 38th & Ames is a very high crime area. read more

My ribs were so tough I was sure I'd be seeing my dentist, but thankfully I couldn't even cut through more than one rib with a knife. Bad attitudes from the workers and even a worse attitude from the bbq itself, if I made what I was served in the kitchen for my friends I would have quietly thrown it away and told them something went horribly wrong and that we need to call in take out. The BBQ is actually pretty good here. Since the concept is "Famous Dave's meets fast food," you can only order via the drive-thru window. For a rib place, the speed is fairly decent, except when the person in front of you has to yell out "Y'ALL TAKE FOOD STAMPS?" every other sentence. One suggestion would be to invest in styrofoam. Remember, this is a BBQ place and BBQ is infamously messy. I got my food in one of those paper boats, wrapped in paper bag, wrapped in plastic bag. I don't want to feel like I'm opening a hastily-wrapped Christmas gift, and I'm quite sure a styrofoam container will help reduce the chance of a huge mess. Just sayin'. read more

My sister and her husband were in town and we did not want to cook. We ordered a rack of the back ribs, 1/2 chicken, coleslaw and baked beans. Being it was a Saturday night they were very busy. I went about the time they said it would be ready and I did wait 10 to 15 minutes, but it was worth the wait! My sister and her husband have traveled extensively and set the bar pretty high. Spoiled by the great BBQ of Kansas City, e.g. Oklahoma Joe's, Fiorella's Jack Stack and Arthur Bryant's, I am often disappointed by what passes for BBQ in the Omaha/Lincoln area. Last night we tried Jim's for the first time and all we can say is WOW! The beef ribs were wonderful, big, meaty, tender and a great flavor; no sauce needed! The beef dinner, also very good, was a huge mound ample for two meals. The medium sauce has plenty of spice with a touch of after burn that is just right; good sauce! Ask for sauce on the side or they pour it right on the meat. Didn't see brisket or burnt ends on the menu, but with Beef Ribs and shredded beef this good, that's all right. Beans were very nice and tasty and even the cole slaw passed muster with flying colors; fresh and flavorful and not drenched in sauce. Prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity of the dinners (rarely do I order a sandwich at a BBQ place, I want some leftovers). Jim's is my new favorite in Omaha till someone proves otherwise. Worth the trip anytime one is within an hour or two of Omaha. read more

Let me just say, I have lived in DFW, TX for 10 years, and I was really unsure about any BBQ joints out here in the Midwest (had extremely low expectations). This place has really turned my idea around. I love the drive through aspect. Rolling down my window, I could smell the BBQ coming out of this little mom and pop shop. Driving around to the pick up window, I got a glance at the wood they throw in the smoker. That moment I knew my taste buds were in good hands. I don't write reviews, but I felt as if this was needed. The ribs had a perfect smoke ring around the edges, and the beans had the right amount of savory and sweet. Went to Jim's for the first time tonight. It was fabulous. The family pack mentioned by the previous reviewer was not available, as they were out of chicken. Too bad, because I'll bet they serve a mean bird. The ribs and rib tips were out of this world. Pulled pork sandwich was the best BBQ sandwich I've ever eaten, without a doubt. This is one of those hidden gems that always makes the trip worthwhile, but you have to order to the place's strengths to really get the full benefit. I've had a lot items off of the menu, but nothing tops a full rack of ribs with the spicy -- and I stress, the spicy -- sauce. The ribs always have a nice charred flavor and the sauce is to die for, as it perfectly complements the meat and has just a nice, slow burn that makes beer seem like heaven. The peach cobbler is also worth risking your life for, which you will do if you draw attention to yourself in this neighborhood.
