Here we opted for a 3 bone baby back platter (actually, 4 bones), with cornbread and sides of coleslaw and creamy cucumbers, plus a half pound of brisket and a refillable soft drink. Both meats had light smoke and minimal seasoning. The well prepared ribs separated cleanly at the bite, and the high quality meat proved delicious both with and without the mild sauce provided. Definitely a winner. In contrast, the chunks of moist end brisket really benefited from the sauce. Indeed, without the sauce the flavor reminded us of pot roast. We would not order it again. This is a hole in the corn wall. I was pleasantly surprised by the tasty cornbread and brisket. I decided to get the fatty marbalized cut by special request with some of their hot sauce. They do give you a choice of three flavors of BBQ sauce mild, hot, and sweet. I loved the hot sauce because it had a good kick to it. The cornbread tasted more like lemon cake and maybe that's just how good it was so I got two pieces. I didn't try the baked beans because they have pork and I don't eat that stuff. There was variety of side so I got the potato salad and it was ok. They were all out of chicken and so I just stuck to my brisket. If you are hungry I would recommend the 1lb brisket versus the 10oz dinner meal with two sides. The bathroom made me feel like I was on a plane because I had to maneuver to get in the small place, but they had soap and water and just needed to warsh me hands. All in all it was a nice experience with friendly staff and no they don't wait on you...this is a BBQ joint. Go up to the counter and just order what you need. BBQ season is my favorite season! In anticipation of moving to the lovely state of Texas, I decided to try all of the BBQ offerings in Omaha before I leave. I've lived mere blocks away from Hartland for years, and have always meant to check it out, but never had the opportunity. Today was the day! Hartland Bar-B-Que is a small family owned BBQ joint at the furthermost edge of Benson. The building is tiny, and right on the corner of a busy road. There is a very, very small parking lot in front, but more spot behind the building.Upon driving up, my senses were assaulted by the sweet smell of smoked meat. The place was packed, which is ALWAYS a good sign! The inside of the building is cozy and well kept. There are about a dozen small tables with chairs throughout the restaurant. They have a walk up counter with the menu off to the side, but printed menus on the countertop for easy reading. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We chose to get the lunch special and an additional side-a sandwich with your choice of pork or chicken, a small bag of chips and a medium drink for $6.99. The portions of meat were INSANE. My sandwich was literally overflowing with pulled pork! It almost brought a tear to my eye..nothing makes me happier than a large portion of BBQ meat! They had a limited amount of drink options-a diet soda, root beer, orange soda and unsweetened tea. Not a big deal, though. We also each got a pint of potato salad and coleslaw. Each meal came to around $11.50 and was more than enough food to share! The pulled pork was great! It had a delicately smoked flavor and was very tender. They had an assortment of sauces to add-I chose the hot BBQ sauce, and it had just enough kick to compliment the smokey undertones of the pork. The potato salad was creamy and cool, which a great crunch from green onions and pickles added throughout. Coleslaw was just ok-it didn't have as much of a sweet or vinegar kick that I like-very average. Eaten alone, it was nothing special. Added to the sandwich, it was a nice compliment to the pork! I am confused about the 4 star rating. I got the pulled pork dinner, because I bought 2 dinners I had 4 sides. First of all the woman who waited on me was not friendly at all. Potato salad was ok, it had eggs, large cubes of sweet pickles and it was.mustard heavy, nothing special. Lastly the meat, it had absolutely no flavor at all. Without the sauce it was nothing meat. However it was hella tender. There was no smokiness, no seasoning, it was just tender bland meat. I gave 2 stars because it wasn't horrible. This was by far the worst bbq I've ever had. Hartland used to have decent meat, but something has changed. My brisket today was more than 50 % fat and utterly tasteless. Where was the smoke? Their sides have always been pretty bad and today was no different. Cole slaw had no flavor. Baked beans that obviously come straight out of a can. Cost has gone up but the food has gone down. The beans were bomb.com with peach surprises mixed in. A staple every time! I got the last of the ribs, and I'm sure glad that I did. The ribs come unsauced, the way they should. Had one bone without anything, like they say YOU CAN TASTE THE SMOKE. Then I put sauce on the rest. I liked the runnier sauce best. The spicy is great as well. Overall, two thumbs up on the Q. Brisket - asked for an end piece but it doesn't matter you're going to get the same DRY DRY piece of meat regardless Pulled Pork - generally not a fan and this version was a bit more disappointing than most. No bark or smoked wood flavoring...at all. Baby Back Ribs - wrapped in foil while resting...ruins the bark (if there was one) so there is no spice or smoke that comes through...it's like steaming them. Bleh Baked Beans were different but ok. You can tell they are house made...green peppers and apples thrown in to spice it up. Not really a baked bean dish but it's ok. Coleslaw crunchy and pretty tasty. Cornbread was similar to what you would get in the South. Sweet and moist...ok. Omaha is known for steaks, but it really needs to get more recognition for its BBQ if this place is any indication. After a long workout and an even longer workday, I needed some homestyle cooking. The brisket and homemade house sauce hit that spot and then some. Plus the creamy cucumbers and baked beans rounded things out. They don't skimp out here either. I'll be honest, I had been living in Omaha for about half a year before first eating at Hartland BBQ, and I had started to slip into an emotional depression. Completely unrightfully so as well, I've got an awesome friend group, family, job ect, it just felt like something was missing. And then I had the three bone special at Hartland for lunch one day about a week ago. For $10 and change I got four ribs (misleading meal title? I ain't mad) beans, potato salad, a drink, some cornbread and all the house made sauce I could pump. Service was ridiculously quick and a touch candid, but I don't need to be romanced when someone is shoving BBQ in my face at breakneck speeds. The main thing I noticed about the ribs before I took my maiden bite; the colors. Perfect Maillard browning on the exterior, and the cross section showed a visible, flawless smoke ring. I'll attach a picture, but for those of you who don't know a smoke ring occurs when meat is smoked under perfect conditions, causing the smoke to penetrate the meat creating a visible "ring" of deliciousness on cut cross sections of the meat. The first bite brought tears to my eyes. I blinked them away so as not to embarrass myself, but as I looked out the window of the smallish dining room, the overwhelming rekindling of the feeling that the world still has items of true beauty and astonishment such as these simple ribs was almost too much to comprehend. The ribs were cooked perfectly. Aforementioned visible smoke ring, seasoned well, tender, but not obnoxiously so. The man who made these knew what he was doing. I tried all of the red sauces, all well balanced and tasty as hell. The spicy was definitely spicy. Beans and potato salad were both phenomenal as well, and the cornbread was sweet, gooey goodness. I felt like Frank Underwood eating at Freddy's for the first time. And for $10 too, fuck me right? Hands down favorite BBQ place in Omaha so far. I'd heavily recommend it for anyone who is struggling emotionally and wants inspiration towards the beauty and majesty this world has to offer. read more

Still, I felt a little disappointed there weren't more options. Sure for the 'dinners' you can have the option of two sides (baked beans, creamy cucumbers, green beans, potato salad, coleslaw, cornbread or chips)... I don't know what else I could want, but I have a sneaking feeling it was macaroni & cheese. Drink options were standard from a machine. I understand the appeal of the convenience factor here, but to me it can't be a 5-star BBQ joint without homemade lemonade. Still, the spoon and fork dispenser is worth a trip. That thing was intriguing. I believe two of the sauces were homemade, but the third seemed to be Cookies (also acceptable). Unfortunately none of them really set my heart on fire. Still, the reason that people go there is the meat. And there, options are plentiful. It's all smoked on-site... chopped pork, chicken, or brisket by the pound, smoked sausage, half or whole chickens and racks of ribs.
