Much like a lot of the other reviewers, I live in the neighborhood and was really hoping to have a good Irish pub within walking distance.
The Chieftain, however, is not good. At all.
Unless there is a conspiracy and I happen to get terrible food on purpose, I truly have no clue how people are giving their food positive reviews.
Myself and a few of my friends have gone there a couple different times and have gotten different things there every time just to give the menu a good run and see if maybe we just got the wrong thing (on a side note, a good restaurant doesn't sell "the wrong thing). So, after a couple visits and trying a variety of things on their menu, myself and everyone who I have gone there with can authentically and sadly say that this is honestly some of the worst food I have ever had. In Seattle or anywhere, for that matter.
Crab chowder - bland as all hell get out, no "bottom" base flavor, slimy. Awful.
Irish Nachos - potato chips put on a plate and covered with way too much cheese to the point where it was one giant congealed disgusting block of cheese over soggy chips. We literally felt sick to our stomachs after eating it.
Chicken Wings - not cooked nearly enough so the meat was rubbery and the sauce consisted of nothing more than a bunch of frank's red hot being dumped on them. Completely forgettable and lazy.
Guiness Stew - like another reviewer said, this is no way shape or form an irish guiness stew. It's a shitty bland tomato (someone needs to tell them that there isn't even supposed to be a tomato broth in this kind of dish) and beef (not good quality meat at all) stew that absolutely must have come out of a can. If it was actually made from scratch, they should be ashamed of their recipe. Because it is wrong and bad.
Mac And Cheese - crumbled dry bacon, way too much cheese that, like the "nachos", congealed and was hard to eat and made us feel sick from all the dairy and oil. They didn't even bother to make a cheese sauce or attempt to add any interesting spices or flavors.
Veggie Buffalo Burger - soggy field roast soaked in (again) frank's red hot and bleu cheese dressing (and not a good one, tasted like shitty mass produced Ken's dressing).
All the food is way too salty, the flavor profiles are all wrong, and there is ZERO inspiration or culinary skill put into making the meals.
And especially considering how low the quality of the food is, the prices are in no way shape or form reasonable. The Guiness stew was $10, which would have been fine if it wasn't a borderline flavorless bowl of garbage that clearly came out of a can.
I understand that it's close to Seattle U and not a terrible place catch a beer after work or school, but unless you're content eating a plate of hot garbage at an inflated price, do yourself a favor and eat somewhere else. Anywhere else. Or don't eat at all. Even that is a better option.
I run a kitchen for a living and I have high expectations put on me by myself and my bosses and I know how easy it would be to make these dishes even remotely palatable without much additional effort and wouldn't even require a vast amount of culinary ability.
We live in one of the best food cities in the country and especially in the First Hill/ Capitol Hill area there are so many fantastic food options for whatever style of cuisine you want. The people who prepare this food and the "chef" who designed the menu should be ashamed of the trash they are charging people for.
Everyone has different tastes but if you are looking to try somewhere new and have reasonably high standards of what you consider a good meal, go anywhere else but here. read more
