Obviously the more than 3 stars are friends or relatives, this place is not even close to the same as the previous owners and the prices are ridiculously higher. The chicken has no flavor over cooked and just not good, the spuds appear to be much more greasy but ok jatd to screw up potatoes but because of the crazy high prices and terrible chicken it makes the other food just not taste good. This was just not me saying it, our whole party is in agreement along with the other legit reviews. So sad that a Modesto favorite lost its reputation over new greedy leadership and not doing things as had been done for years to Modestos delight. The remodel of the Mchenry store looks pretty nice but perhaps trying to recover the cost of it with the food prices being so high. I feel this place is getting unfairly rated so I decided to write this review, I would definitely put it above a 2.8 stars, after all no place is perfect and only Cane's comes close to how tender and juicy the chicken here is. My family found this place a few years back and we loved it, but the one thing we didn't love was how bad or just bland many of the sides were. The mashed potatoes & gravy used to taste pretty strange, the spuds were usually not crispy and very bland tasting, and the biscuits, more often than not, were dry/hard. So when I read the newspaper, (something I rarely do) and saw that there were new owners and they had made some changes to the menu, including changing recipes for sides like Mac and Cheese and their mashed potatoes and gravy, as well as adding new sauces like Nashville Hot (my fav way to eat chicken), we decided to skip our usual fried chicken places, (the closeby Raising Canes, Popeyes, and KFC) and see if the new Chicken Barn owners had made a difference. I've never had any bad or overcooked chicken from this place, it might lean towards undercooked at times but if you know anything about salmonella then you know that it's only on the outside of the meat and generally a socially engineered fear in the same way that people are terrified of raw eggs or raw milk (meanwhile many healthy athletes guzzle both down without a problem). Frankly, it's some of the most tender fried chicken I've had anywhere, maybe not the crispiest but it sure is juicy and tender, and I will admit it's occasionally a bit pink on the inside but if you're not squeamish then you'll be fine and if it really bothers you, nothing is stopping you from popping it into your oven or microwave for a minute or two. While I do have some complaints like paying .50 cents for a sauce, I guess the fact that the size of the sauce is at least double what other places offer counterbalances that. Moreover, they have good combo deals for families. The nuggets were just as good and tender as I remembered, maybe a tiny bit pinkish inside but I'll take that over a dry stringy piece of chicken any day. I'd love them to have a more crispy coating but you win some, you lose some. Regarding the sides, I tried the new mashed potatoes and the new mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was a nice white cheddar mac, pasta a little overcooked when I got it but surprisingly good cheese flavor, I'd give it about a 7/10. The new mashed potatoes are skin on, which is rare in fast food, and a favorite of mine at sit down restaurants. It adds a nice texture and flavor to the potatoes, and the new gravy is good and doesn't have that strange artificial taste the previous gravy had. I'd give their new mashed potatoes and gravy a 7.5-8/10. Maybe a pinch more salt might take them to the next level. The BBQ sauce is good and leans on the sweet side. I tried the new Nashville Hot sauce and while it didn't really taste like Nashville hot flavor I was accustomed to at KFC, it was solid hot sauce and I think if you mixed a 50/50 mix of BBQ and the Hot Sauce it'd make a perfect spicy BBQ. My sister is a ranch freak and she tried the Valley Sauce (as it was described as a variation of Ranch) for the first time and said she didn't like it, your mileage may vary. I'd like to see if they improved the spuds but I can't see myself experimenting much since I really liked the new mashed potatoes. Pricing wise, i'd give them a 9/10. Pricing seems a bit above average for this economy (if a little better than average for how fresh, juicy and homemade everything tastes) until you look at how good the combo deals are for families. They also have daily specials available. Sad to say, I almost changed my mind about going here after reading how many negative reviews were directed at the new owners. Maybe they were true at the time, but if they were, it seems like the owners shaped up a lot. Either way, keep it up and I appreciate the changes you guys have made. read more

I have gone here twice. I was reluctant to go the first time because it's fried chicken (although I like it), I would rather eat healthier; and I would also like my parents to eat healthier. One of my buddies in between these two trips told me to give it another shot. He actually just was trying to convince me to go instead of Chik-a-filet, but I decided to go to Habit instead. But he did remove the prejudice in my head that i had for this place. Since my parents keep trying to get me to go here, when they came into town I decided to give it another shot when they strolled into town. First time coming here the chicken just wasn't good. The BBQ sauce was too ketchup-ie and the spuds had too much potato and not enough breading. The second time I came here however, everything was much better (for the record both time I got the chicken nuggets). The nuggets were nice and tender. They were juicy and you could see the moisture whisking out of the breast meat. The spuds had more breading which made them taste more like french fries. The biscuits were good and reminded me of a MUCH better KFC biscuit. BBQ sauce was the same but this time around I think my taste buds just adjusted to them. Service: When I told them I wasn't sure if I wanted to get nuggets, the employee insisted that I try them again. She grabbed me, my mom and my dad a sample on the spot. This was very nice of her and unnecessary. Cleanliness: I realize that this is a fast food place but I still expect a clean restaurant. They do try to be clean but it's just an old restaurant. Short of a huge remodel I am not sure what they can do, the place just looks rundown. This place use to be a Foster Farms in the 90's. Also almost every time I see employees handling trash without gloves. I really don't like that because most of the time they go straight back behind the counter to take our order. Bathrooms: The bathrooms at somewhere like this are very necessary. At places like this you get your hands all greasy and you NEED to go to the bathroom to wash them off. I personally don't like touching anything when I go into a bathroom so when a public bathroom has paper towels that I can use to exit I will always cling to those. These bathrooms looked clean and well maintained. Verdict: i would go back! As I write this review I realize that I am craving it. This is what makes a restaurant great imo, makes you want to keep coming back, good customer service, and clean bathrooms. If the place was more modern, a little bit cleaner, and the next time I show up the employee has gloves they will be a 5/4 star experience. I heard the one on Oakdale is much cleaner/nicer. Edit: i feel like this place deserves 4 star because of their service. I hope they work on wearing gloves when handling trash. What a shame. I remember when Chicken Barn was top drawer. We'd go there at least once a week. A couple of years back it all started to go south. First it was smaller portions, less sauce and bad attitudes at the window. Then it was a ration of back talk if I asked for a senior discount at well over 65.... Asking for I D of my age and general rudeness. Comments like we don't give senior discounts on ten piece .. only one person meals. By this time my kids had left the nest, and I ate my leftovers later.Then it was cutting back portions.. leaving out a nugget or the biscuit or the butter.. filling the slaw 2/3 full.i don't remember the last time the chicken was hot or warm. Still, when my kids visit, they want chicken barn. Tonight everything was not JUST cold but REALLY so far from hot it could have been sitting out all day. And I got it at 6:12p.m. We only live a mile from there. Next week my kids come home for Christmas. They asked for chicken barn. I'm going to ask chicken barn what I could do to get hot fresh food.. come early? straight up ask? It gets cooked SOME TIME, would they make it fresh while I wait. Maybe the one on Oakdale is better. They're usually nicer. I'm always polite too. I just take it... like a whipped animal... hoping that kindness and my old age will call for respectful service. What a shame. I realize why I don't come here often. The quality has gone down as others have stated. I had the nugget meal. The chicken was just warm and not hot as expected. I asked for one valley sauce but the kid wanted to charge me for it. Let me get this straight, I just spent 22 bucks and you can't give me one extra sauce so that way my kids can try it? Hello my fellow locals! Thankfully Chicken Barns new management knows what they're doing! While we did wait a bit in the drive through, I will always wait for better quality and more tasty! I think it was just crowded and that just means I'm not alone in my opinion. I've been a Chicken Barn fan since before it was called Chicken Barn. I have loved their nuggets that are actual chicken meat not processed chicken bits. I have loved their spuds that are crispy potato wedges that are a unique and delicious side that's not to be missed. But most of all I love the chicken fillet sandwich (ask to have the fillet dipped in their BBQ sauce or spicy sauce if that's your thing) which is the best chicken sandwich I've ever had. All of this to say, the new management has not messed any of this up and in fact the nuggets seem bigger and tastier. The biscuits seem more moist. And I'm irritated because it seems my order is always the one that gets messed up. But then my husband had ordered 3 piece dark meal and asked for 2 thighs. They gave him 2 breasts. It seemed to have been made hours prior. None of my family ate their chicken after the first bite. The Mashed potatoes was mid, but for the price we're paying I would expect fresh chicken every time. I won't be going out of my way to support this business anymore. My family and I used to enjoy this place and make the 25+ minute drive 2-3 times per month but these last 2 times the food was extremely poor quality. My girlfriend went through the drive-thru on Saturday, 07/29/2023. She ordered 20 chicken nuggets and asked for three ranch dipping sauces and three bbq dipping sauces (mind you, I was on the phone with her when this was occurring).. The total came to $31.54. First off, I was astounded at the price for 20 gd nuggets. If one does the math, that's $1.57 per nugget. She was then given the bag with her order and she drove home. When she opened the bag, it contained the nuggets and seven bbq sauces (see photo)..not three bbq and three ranch as she requested. I told her to contact them and let them know of their screwup. After calling them, she drove back to the location and walked inside to get the three ranch sauces. She said the employee, Scott W., asked her if she brought the bbq sauces back. Puzzled, she told him she had not (and thought to herself, why would an eating establishment ask for sauce containers back?? Would they have served them to someone else?? Not even knowing if they had become contaminated or not?) The thought of asking for them back boggles my mind...Scott W. reaffirmed what he had asked her, placed two ranch sauces on the counter and told her, "Yes, we normally charge for these" but was "nice enough" to not charge her (for sauces she had already paid for and not received).. What the AF is wrong with customer service in today's age?? Everyone wants small businesses supported. It's difficult to subscribe to that when this is the service one receives. This is the second time in about 30 days that I've had an absolutely ridiculous and almost laughable experience at local fast-food restaurants with regard to orders being incorrect and absurd customer service by team members and eatery management. $32 for 20 mediocre nuggets. Chicken was ok but I ordered lots of potato spuds and a lot of them were bad black inside my son ate one then he gasped for water to get the spoiled taste out of his mouth I had to check the rest and sure enough many were black inside. Low quality spuds! The mash potatoes were horrible and the gravy had lumps and tasted burnt. I ordered Mac and cheese and most of it was just the cheese sauce not much macaroni. I'm saddened because I used to love this place now I have to look for another chicken take out place. The window person and manager are okay. The food quality is not good. The biscuits are extremely oily and flat.... Shaped like a small ciabatta (but ciabatta bread is much better). It was our first time going there and the guy at the drive through was very nice and helpful. He gave us a sample of the chicken nuggets and they were a bit salty but very yummy. We thought if that was any indication of how the chicken was then we were going to have a feast dinner. Unfortunately the 8pc meal was somewhat of a letdown. If I could leave 0 stars I would. In this local economy you would think a business would try to keep every customer, but sadly not Chicken Barn. We live in the Bay Area and have always made it a point to eat at Chicken Barn on McHenry when we come into town. However, this will be the LAST time we ever come back. We went through the drive thru and ordered the 20 nugget special with a side of mashed potatoes (since you can't substitute a side) and 4 additional sauces. Our total was a little over $45. When we got to my daughters house (8 min away) I knew the moment I opened the bag that the chicken was not fresh at ALL. The chicken was dark brown and tasted like old grease. The biscuits where literally hard like hockey pucks, the batter on the spuds was literally falling off and to top it off they changed the recipe of their gravy to some kind of white tasteless goop. I understand that it wasn't going to be piping hot but the whole things was barely lukewarm. I called immediately and spoke with the asst/manager and firstly explained to him the taste of the chicken and how I thought it was cooked twice and he said that was not the case, but would be from the oil needing changing and it was scheduled for tomorrow. I said that is something that should have been told to me when I ordered. I proceeded to tell him the biscuits were so hard that I could bang it against the counter so he could hear and he said there was no need. I asked if I could get a discount or a credit for the future and he said no. The policy is I can get a replacement within 24 hrs only with a receipt. I told him the receipt was no issue, but I lived out of town and that would do me no good. He proceeded to say that was their policy, so I asked to speak to the manager and he said he was the manager or assistant. I asked for someone above him or could I talk to the owner and he said that was the owners policy, I continued to talk and he said I needed to stop talking over him (totally unprofessional) I even was like (hey, don't need to talk like that) when I asked for his name he hung up on me! I called back and said "you hung up on me and I need your name" he said he wasn't going to give me his name and hung up again! I called again and I rang and rang. I hung up and called again and he answered and said if I did not stop calling he would block my number which he did after he hung up on me again. I ended up calling from my daughter's phone and a woman answered and I told her that I will be leaving a yelp review and how unprofessional the man handled the situation. It's just sad that after all these years of having come here we will never come back again! The owner was always there and made coming here great, but no more. The food and customer service is completely awful. If you do decide to come here do yourself a favor and ask them when the oil was changed otherwise be prepared to have an awful, awful meal. The chicken nuggets were good portions, crunchy, and had great flavor, the spuds are a Chicken Barn classic, the biscuit was fluffy and buttery, and the honey mustard was creamy and delicious!
