It's very dark and they use tea lights as their lighting (we had about 3 at our table) and used our phone flashlights to see our food...I like to see what I'm eating! LOL! Still, a nice and different aesthetic, I mean, you're dining in a cave, right?! To start off, we had the nachos which for as simple and basic they look, they tasted pretty good. Shredded cheese, cheese sauce, beans and corn with a side of salsa and sour cream (we paid extra for the guac which wasn't my favorite-honestly) For our main meals, I ordered the chicken gyro which I thought was a little dry, possibly why it came with sour cream on the side? but the salad that accompanied it was sooo delicious and fresh. My partner's quesadilla was fresh, warm and delicious. To end the night we ordered the Dr Watson dessert-warm brownies, amaretto and dulce de leche ice cream-- DELICIOUS! Cafe Archetypus is a tried and true spot for me. I've been visiting this cafe since I was a little one - it was the perfect place to grab a bite after hitting the movie theatre which used to be right across the street. Over the years they've updated their menu a few times, but to be honest they always hit the spot ESPECIALLY if you're looking for dessert. If you're not into dim lit restaurants, this place may not be for you. The cafe is relatively dark overall so if you try to use your phone's flashlight people will be staring at you. The aesthetic of this cafe is pretty unique - I've never seen anything like it especially in bergen county. One thing to note is the service is friendly, but a bit slow. Oddly enough fits the vibe. This is a cute date place. There are rooms with different interior décor; there's variety inside and the place has an eclectic feel. I like the candle lighting, too. My partner and I always end up being seated in the caves or the sculpted booths; I've never sat at the tables by the first room after the entrance. It's good for vegetarians. My partner can actually eat there and feel satisfied with the Mediterranean platter or the vegetable quesadilla. I think there's also a black bean burger. What an assortment of teas and drinks, I really like the Hot Almond. Oh, and the desserts! So many sweet treats to try. We'll share a dessert often because one is enough for two. There's also a little park with a footbridge in the area, or of course the waterfront walkway that you can stroll afterwards. I ordered the Greek Salad and a chicken gyro but where this place excels is their dessert menu and grand selection of specialty beverages. The salad and gyro portion were massive. For dessert I got the cocodemon cake with ice cream and a lava chocolate (hot chocolate with a subtle spicy after taste- highly recommend) Service was hit or miss. The food and drinks are beyond your expectations. We got the chicken quesadillas and cilantro lime quesadillas. Both were fresh and tasty! I want to go back and get them again. I got a spicy chai latte that I have been craving since I went (don't get if you don't like spicy things) and we got the chocolate raspberry brownie dessert which also tasted very fresh, moist, everything you basically want a dessert to be, and the portion is huge, enough for a whole table to eat. We came here for lunch on a Sunday and ordered a coffee, iced mocha latte, Portland impossible burger and Houston impossible burger. The burgers were pretty good, though I wish the chips were fries instead. We didn't ask if we could swap out the chips for fries, I'll have to ask next time! The mocha latte was very beautifully made with whipped cream and cocoa powder ($6.95 though haha). A girlfriend recommended Cafe Archetypus for the desserts and ambiance, so I decided to go after dinner one night for dessert. They are BYOB so I brought a bottle of wine with me. The wait to sit in the "caves" (or the back of the venue) was about 15-20 minutes. I found out that you could get on the waitlist through Yelp before you arrive. The "caves" are the back area of the cafe. Each table is nestled into a sort of "cave" so it has a more private feel than the opened dining area out front. I ordered the Dark Desire and Strawberry Cheesecake. The cheesecake was good but nothing extravagant. The Dark Desire was a warm chocolate cake with Nutella hazelnut and vanilla ice cream, and crushed English toffee. THIS. THIS CAKE WAS IT. The cake was so warm and gooey. A bit of that with a spoonful of the cold ice cream was just divine. Absolutely decadent in the best way possible. I will be back to try the other desserts again soon! read more

I frequent this place every few months or so. I enjoy the unique design and cave like ambiance it evokes. I'll say Ambiance is key so consistency in mood, lighting, and music is important and I hope they continue to follow along the world they are trying to create. The bathrooms should match the vibe of the place and should be kept clean as well. My recent visit started off alittle irritating because our reservation was pushed for an hour, I get it things happen and accommodating other guests is important. Accommodations were made for us and the waiter who attend us really made the night by providing great customer service. I'm such a creature of habit, when I find something(s) I like, I stick to them. The Cave never disappoints. It's nice to return to an establishment you haven't been to in awhile, and receive the same quality of food you come to expect. My experience tonight was completely different than that of other times I've visited.
