I had a tequila gimlet and it was so tasty. The perfect amount of sweet, tart and tequila kick. I actually came here before maybe once or twice and hadn't been for a while. Then I gotta invited to this spot for the date from hell lol. The man showed up super late and had the audacity to have an attitude with me for being upset. Trust I never saw that man again, paid for all of my own drinks, even though I had been invited out and he downed his drink so fast so he could 'leave me first' that it was thee most pathetic and immature sorry sight I ever did see, from a grown man. The bartenders were so kind about it and even said waiting 45 minutes for anyone was a no-no and that his behavior was unacceptable! I agree. I'd definitely go back in the future. It's a perfect place for a thoughtful cocktail without the crowds. My wife and I stopped here on a Sunday afternoon while our son was celebrating a birthday with his friends at the Brooklyn Battle Blaster Nerf Arena nearby. We had the place entirely to ourselves when we arrived, and that hour of peace and quiet with a great drink felt just luxurious. Bitter Monk comes from the same team behind Sugar Monk, the amazing cocktail bar in uptown Manhattan. It's an intimate bar that doubles as the tasting room for Atheras Spirits, their micro-distillery. The menu is built around house-made amari, herbal liqueurs, and bitters, with herbs, roots, flowers, and wild plants (many of them foraged) worked into the drinks. Added bonus: Everything they pour comes from New York State. The space itself is gorgeous. Colorful stained glass glows behind the bar, framed by a metal piece that reproduces the Atheras Spirits logo. The ambiance is elegant but relaxed, cozy with a loungey vibe; the kind of place where you can settle in without feeling like you need to dress up. I had the Devil and the Blue Sea (Svol aquavit, Atheras Akhenaten amaro, tamarind, yuzu, lime, patchouli, and baharat). It was complex and layered without being muddled. My wife had the Gaia Martini (Atheras Botanical Monks Gin East, Method dry vermouth, Svol aquavit, and Atheras mastiha liqueur), a beautifully herbal take on a classic. Both were excellent. A friend who doesn't drink joined us later, and he had real options. He ordered the Butterfly Field, a zero-proof cocktail with Lyre's London Spirit, yuzu, lime, lavender, butterfly pea, orange blossom, juniper, pepperberry, and egg white. It got the same care as the regular cocktails, not a token mocktail. Side note: They don't take reservations; it's first come, first served. Happy hour runs Thursday through Sunday until 4 pm, with a choice of four cocktails for $13-14.

I learned that the establishment's name comes from the joining of the 2 owners last names. All the staff here was very friendly and attentive. The service wasn't lacking. The bar also felt spacious so you didn't feel like you were piling onto other people. Drinks: We loved the bartender. I enjoyed the pineapple mule and my friend had the spicy coconut mojito. The drinks were simple but delicious. He was also flexible with changing the contents in each drink or playing around with the ingredients. I could hang out here just for the bar alone. Food: We started out by sharing the large wings. They come out in a good size with a crispy skin. I then had the pan seared salmon with white rice and veggies. I felt the salmon had a good sear. The rice could have used a nice gravy to marry the salmon with. My friend had the lime Shrimp rice bowl which she said was good. We were rewarded at the end by a generous slice of chocolate cake served by one of the owners. What a nice surprise! Great portion size and reasonable prices. Overall, the food here is solid and I could see myself returning to try more dishes.

Unfortunately, our most recent visit was the complete opposite. We arrived right when they opened, sat at the bar, and ended up spending around $200. Once the bar got busy, it felt like we were completely forgotten. After finishing our drinks, we waited about 40 minutes trying to order another round. When we finally got the bartender's attention, instead of acknowledging the wait or apologizing, he simply told us he had "many drinks before us." We waited another 30 minutes before deciding to just ask for the check. There was no apology for the delay, no "thank you," and no goodbye after we'd spent a significant amount of money. He handed us the check and walked away as if he couldn't have cared less. It also seemed like he was the only person behind the bar who knew how to make the cocktails, which created a bottleneck all night. That's an operational issue, but unfortunately it was made much worse by the lack of customer service. We know this place is capable of providing a great experience because we've had it twice before. Hopefully this was just an off night, but based on this visit, we'd definitely think twice before returning.
