The Caramel Room

I came here with a friend when I was staying at the Berkeley... for some reason we couldn't go to the Blue Bar - it seems like it was closed... and so the Caramel Room was our only option. There was a couple finishing up their drinks when we first sat down, but otherwise the place was *empty.* A smartly dressed waiter came and handed us some menus, but warned us that they would be closing in about a half hour. We ordered a couple of cocktails and some little bites to go with. It took *forever* to get either one of these things - which was a little disconcerting since we knew they were closing so soon. The décor is dark and sleek, but not inviting enough that I would come here again if I had other options. When our drinks finally arrived, they were well-done and nicely garnished. But the main problem was just how empty and desolate the place felt - like we'd found the least happening "posh" bar in all of London and that nobody who knows any better comes here. Per our fear that we wouldn't be able to knock back our drinks quickly enough to beat closing time... they were ready to shut their doors and our waiter kindly asked us to vacate the bar. When we pointed to our practically untouched drink, he pointed us to the lobby. We ended up finishing up our drinks on some chairs in the main lobby, which was severely awkward and rather odd - especially consider the caliber of this hotel. For a late drink, not at all recommended.

Then it took some time to find the right venue. Need to go through the door in the middle of sculpture exhibition hall, across the garden, enter the other building door. Do not get confused by many other food choices (coffee, hot meals, cakes or others). It's on the left side of entrance with reception table for you to check in. There are 3 options, depending on whether you need to celebrate anything, with price varying at £30, £35 and £38. You will get 5 pieces of sandwiches, 5 pieces of sweat and the your choice of tea. I chose traditional one, English breakfast with milk and sugar.

There was a choice of tea or proseco or both to go along with the savory and sweet tea sandwiches. It was pricey, 30pounds, but I wanted to splurge a little. Caution, I emailed my request for reservation twice, they never got it. We had to wait until some other party who had a reservation did not show up for 45 minutes after their appointed time. Worth the wait. Make sure you double check your reservation. There were empty tables, but they do not take walk ins as there is only a certain amount of food prepared depending on reservations. The museum was fun to walk around after tea.

The attention and service begins at the entrance and does not stop there. The staff are absolutely helpful and explain everything for us throughout the tea service. The earl grey was the best and had to buy some as it was delicious. I highly recommend making reservation and enjoying the service as well as historical context of hotel. The scones were out of this world and warm from the oven as they make when you arrive to ensure everyone gets it fresh.

The decor was absolutely beautiful, the staff were great and very accommodating. We were arriving late based on commute issues so I rebooted for a later time so we weren't late for our seating. We arrived about 15 minutes after our original time and 45 minutes before our new time and they let us sit right away. Most of the food was good. For me, the one issue was that I don't typically eat white bread so the first few sandwiches felt dry. The ironic part was that I don't typically like shrimp but I tried the prawn cocktail and it was one of my savory favorites along with the heritage beef. Most of the sweets were good, you just have to get past texture expectations depending on what you're used to. For example, the cheesecake had a gelatin-like texture, and we are used to cheesecake being more on the creamy side. The flavor however, was good. The star of the show, the tea. We both only tried 2 teas. Between the tower and the tea, you get full quickly. I ordered the lemongrass and ginger then the Taiwanese Four Season. My favorite was the lemongrass and ginger. I also purchased one to take home. Overall great experience and I highly recommend.

Quiet, pleasant and an attentive and friendly wait staff and seemly very local cliental . I will need to remember this for next time. We ordered fish and chips and a cheeseburger (sans bun for gluten free) and the kids had chicken tenders and a cheeseburger. The fish and chips were great, with crispy battering the fish flaky and delicious. My wife's burger she said was very good, flavorful and juicy. Everything we ordered was really good and, of course, we enjoyed a pint of proper English lager. The staff members were very nice and helpful and the pub atmosphere was great, even with families (obviously we weren't in the bar area). Overall it was a great top off to our day of sight seeing and we look forward to returning.
