I'd been excited to try out Captain's Boil since hearing great things about its Toronto locations. We came in on Easter Sunday, so it was pretty empty. This restaurant is unique for its serving style - if you order individual seafood, you eat with your hands from plastic bags. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that we were able to keep ourselves relatively clean. We ordered a pound of mussels with garlic sauce, crawfish with lemon pepper sauce, and a fish teriyaki dish with seafood assortment. I loved the garlic sauce, as it gave the mussels a great kick. I wouldn't recommend the crawfish, as they don't have much meat. I felt like I was just nibbling the shells for the sauce. However, the fish teriyaki was a solid choice. Overall, it was a filling and tasty meal, and it came out to less than $20 per person. With so few customers in the restaurant, service was relatively prompt, but I would recommend more frequent water refills, as the sauces were quite salty. We had to personally wave over the waitress in order to get water. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend Captain's Boil if you enjoy seafood like I do. Glad they opened up in London! read more

I ordered from Captain boil and got the wrong order and food was missing. I was told to send a photo of the food that was missing. An hour and a half later I still never got it, when I was told it would get here in 15 minutes. It's unfortunate, cause the food is good just not the service. 1 lb of assorted seafood in a bag with broccoli swimming in spicy garlic butter. That's basically how I hope my obituary starts because while I'm aware of the dangers to eating too much fat, I also know that dipping French fries in their sauce is dangerously addictive. It's your typical "seafood and stuff in a bag boiled with sauce" deal which is great because there wasn't one here in town. I got their special for $25 which includes mussels, shrimps , clams and crawfish. This also includes a side which I typical order broccoli for as I sometime justify my terrible eating habits with a vegetable. The seafood comes out whole, so there is some work involved with peeling the shrimp and taking apart the crawfish but I grew up eating this way so it's actually my personal favorite way to have seafood. I would take this over sushi almost any day. My husband always gets the king crab which is a little pricey but the legs are giant and they don't charge that much more than most markets would for you to make it at home. read more

I would recommend Captain's Boil if: - you enjoy pure seafood on its own - willing to pay around $25-30 per person - don't mind getting your hands dirty The menu and quality is exactly the same as the Toronto location. Boiled seafood is brought to your table in a plastic bag and guests eat with their plastic gloves and a bib. Very fun experience but can also get very expensive. I recommend ordering the mussels and shrimp. Everything else is not very worth it, maybe the snow crab if you'd like more variety. Crawfish is difficult to eat and not very meaty compared to the shrimp. The fries are nice and crispy and not too startchy. They make a good side! Get the captains boil sauce for everything as it's a combination of the cajun, garlic, and lemon sauce. The sauce is AMAZING. I lick my fingers after every bite and dip my fries in them. Caution: mild will be more spicy than you expect. It's only half a cob of corn (don't be fooled and pay $1.25) Overall, you may leave feeling unsatisfied and your wallet feeling a bit too light but it's all protein so it takes awhile for you to feel full. By the time I got home I felt stuffed. 4 stars because it's too pricey- I even witnessed a couple leaving once they were sat and viewed the menu. read more

Went there for lunch with coworkers. I had some sort of combo (shrimp, craw fish, mussels, clams, rice). The portion size was ok, not very large at all or filling, but it was very tasty and not too expensive. Not many options on the menu. Overall, the prices on the menu seem very high. Servers could come across as rude, but I chalk that up to a language barrier. If you consider some abrasive moments as simply a language barrier, then the servers can be considered friendly enough. Meal was delivered quickly. A coworker has severe issues with gluten. The staff did not install confidence about what items were gluten free or not (let alone their cooking practices for gluten issues). If I was him, I would not have eaten there at all. However, we are back at work and he is still alive, so all is good I guess. I came here last week with my friends on a Friday night and the restaurant was almost 75% full. The prices changed since the first time I visited and we now pay market prices for the seafood rather than a fixed price. I ordered 1lb of shrimp, in Captain's Boil sauce and non-spicy for $16.99. One good thing is that now this price includes 2 sides so I chose corn and steamed rice. The portion of steamed rice was actually quite large. If you mix the sauce with the rice and shrimp, it's basically the same as Seafood Fried Rice (which goes for about $16). Overall, a fun, hands-on experience that will leave you with a very full stomache! I do have to say though, the flavour does get a little boring after a while but not bad. Tip: do not wear the gloves if you order shrimp, it just gets in the way of peeling! read more

This is my third time at Captain's Boil and my first time at the London location. Captain's Boil is a wonderful restaurant with a fun and messy environment, great for gatherings with families and friends! This is not your ordinary sit down establishment with plates, forks and knives! Get ready to use your hands and indulge in their delicious selection of seafood. The London location was clean, service was fast and the staff was attentive. Food: First you pick your seafood (lobster, clams, mussels, shrimps, crab). Next, you pick your sauce! They have four different sauces to choose from, but my favourite is their captain's boil (a mixture of the 3). Once you've picked your sauce, you can adjust the heat to your liking. I highly recommend their mussels and clams, sweet and juicy! They have several side dishes as well. Their fried rice was a pleasant surprise! Not too salty and paired well with leftover sauce and the seafood. Their fried shrimp basket is also great for sharing. Captain's Boil is definitely different from other restaurants in London. I highly recommended giving this place a visit if you'd like to try something new. read more

This place was very strange. It definitely had some sort of pirates theme but just in an odd way. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the strong smell of fish. We then sat down and were given plastic gloves and a plastic bib. After that we ordered our shrimp and received them in a hot plastic bag full of oil sauce which left a big pool of oil on the paper table cloth underneath. The whole thing was very strange to me and I definitely wouldn't go back. If you love sea food and like to try things outside of the norm than maybe this is the place for you? read more

This place was overpriced for what it is and all around weird experience. The food was ok but it is just a big mess. You order and they plunk a clear garbage bag on the table with no plate. The sauce goes all over the table and you are supposed to eat it with your hands like some sort of animal. That's right no fork no Chopsticks but plastic gloves. They also provide no plates or serving dishes. We just had appetizers and tbe bill was over $76 I left feeling annoyed and frustrated with this place I don't get why people would want to eat seafood out of a plastic bag with no plates. read more

Been meaning to try this place for a while after enjoying a similar concept while living in Dallas. Boy are we glad we did. It was very good and definitely some much needed diversity in London, where all you can eat sushi places dominate the seafood scene. If you like seafood then you'll love a good Southern boil, if you don't like seafood or the smell of seafood then this is not the place for you. I love that they give you a bib and gloves cause the oil and seasoning will make a mess, trust me hot oil and seasoning burns otherwise and god forbid if you rub your eye/face or have to go to the bathroom (so my hubby tells me!) We ordered two pounds each of snow crab and shrimp as well as a pound of crayfish. One order each of corn and potato as well as an order of Cajun fries. Everything came super fast, hot and delicious. New interesting place in London. Found it interesting that the server asked if we had been in before (which we replied no) and they didn't explain how they're no plates, utensils, etc. . The first thing dropped off at the table was the side of baked potato I ordered. Just a baked potato dropped on the table in a plastic bag. Maybe this would have been more fun if it was explained how the experience differed from other restaurants and wasn't just really confusing. Our server ended up leaving half way through our time there and no one came back to the table. We had to approach what we assumed was the manager after waiting almost 30 minutes for someone to come around. With this being said, I love seafood and really enjoyed the flavours. Great flavours and fun concept. I enjoyed the interactive nature of Captains Boil. It's a neat place to check out with a large group. I'd suggest coming here at least once for the novelty of eating with your hands out of plastic bags. The food itself was really tasty--I couldn't get enough of their Cajun sauce. The staff was friendly and the place itself wasn't very busy for a Friday night so our group of 4 were seated without a wait. In terms of menu options, I'd suggest getting some sides (corn especially) and their fried rice (super tasty) to complement the seafood. Otherwise, unless you wanna break the bank, it won't be filling enough. My biggest issue w this place is the cost. I get that seafood is expensive, but I spent $25 and still left semi hungry. This is a fun place to eat. They have all different kinds of seafood and you choose what kind you want and what seasoning. They give you a bib and plastic gloves and they bring the food out in plastic bags and place them on the table and you just go to town. Review of Captains Boil London location. We love seafood! It's Friday night and we go without reading any reviews before hand. That was a mistake! It's virtually empty. Only four booths occupied. We are shown to a very grimy booth, food on the seat cushions and even the cloth on the back of the seats. Just really dirty. Should have left then! But we wait, and wait, considering the place is almost empty you would think we would have seen a waitress, but no. We waited more than 10 minutes, no offer to take drinks order, no one takes our food order. We had to literally walk over and ask for a waitress, who when she arrived at our booth, could not speak English and was rather put out that we had bothered her. We point to the food we want on the menu, Oyster Poor boy sandwich, yam fries and a shrimp/scallop stir fry with Udon noodles. Mild sauce please. She nods and walks away, then 5 minutes later she returns and say, "No Oysters". Ok, it's a seafood restaurant with no oysters. That's a number of dishes on the menu, but no oysters, hmmm. So we go for the crab cakes. After another long wait, dinner finally arrives and the 2 crab cakes (14.00) are so tiny, not even 2 inches in diameter, have no crab, it's all breading, inside and out! Not even the flavour of crab! Very very disappointing. The yam fries were ok, sauce was nice. The seafood stir fry (16.00) was all noodles, with a smattering of teenage tiny salad shrimp and a couple of even smaller bay scallops. Terrible dish, shrimp and scallops should at least be visible. The sauce was "spicy hot", not "mild" as asked for. There was nothing seafood about this meal! We will never go back and cannot recommend this place. Can't even give it one star! My 2 friends and I got a 3 bags of shrimp and few bags of muscles and were full after that but spent 45 dollars each. Someone needs to lance this boil. We love our seafood. Heck, east coast is in my blood.. I was excited to hear about this place so my wife and I gave it a try. We were very impressed with the way the placed looked when we walked in. We saw the menus, and it was a bit pricy. That was fine though - cheap seafood ain't good and good seafood ain't cheap. When the food arrived, everything about the food screams cheap. It is painfully clear they preboiled the snot out of the food and 'finish' it in bags. They rely on you putting hot sauce (on mussels? Seriously) so you won't notice how bland the food is. Eating out of a bag is cool and all but it loses it's charm pretty quickly. We also ordered potato as a side... Which was a russet potato, undercooked and not seasoned with anything. Oh and no utensils. Eesh. We gave up on the potatoes and ordered fries... Which were basically frozen French fries you can get anywhere. We wound up going to McDonald's later that night. All in all, it basically felt like a cheap knockoff of a restaurant - almost like owner saw a restaurant like this and decided to make their own, just as cheaply as possible. read more

Those complaining about the mess and serving style should have familiarised themselves with the restaurant before coming. It's made quite clear on the website. Was anxious to try this place after seeing an article in the Free Press and hoping for an alternative to Red Lobster. Atmosphere was OK except for the big TV'S that belong more in pubs and sports bars than a seafood restaurant. Had the calamari as an appetizer which was deep fried and nothing to write home about. I had the snow crab and my son had the mussels which were served and maybe even prepared in plastic bags. All sides are extra. (If you want broccoli it'll set you back 6.95$!) I had a potato which was just a big boiled potato cut in half and plopped into the bag. My son had corn on the cob which was as bland as my potato. Eating with your hands can be fun but reaching into a rather large plastic bag to get at your food leaves a lot to be desired. I asked for bread to soak up the extra sauce and they didn't have any. So gave it a try, quite unique concept and well worth a visit. Order your seafood the way you like it, most come in a bag and that's it. Throw in a potato or corn or something else to make up your bag. The staff were helpful and friendly. Some side dishes viewed, they looked large. With ours; crawfish and crab legs, I could have used something along with them, oh yeah maybe nice sour roll or bread would be great. A tad expensive but then it's seafood, right! read more
