I am writing this review late ... but was engaged in a conversation today that reminded me of the want to write about my experience. I ate at The Buckingham on September 23 - after attending The Book of Mormon. Overall the experience was enjoyable. Often, you are hard pressed to find a vegan restaurant that delivers on the "pub" atmosphere as well as the Buck-- so it was refreshing to go into a restaurant and not have the pretence that you find at many other vegan restaurants. It was casual, comfortable and welcoming.
For my group, the food exceeded expectation-- and as mentioned by other reviewers, the "chicken" wings are incredible and hit all the right mouth feels. We shared the Nachos with a variety of dips, the wings and a Caesar salad. As well, we were able to get a few nice pints. To the cooks and the bartenders-- you did a great job, and if it were your efforts alone, I would probably be a frequent customer and promoter of the restaurant. However -- our server was awful and it is because of her engagements with our table that I will probably leave some time in between returning and be unable to recommend The Buck to any friends or family.
The service was off-putting enough to dampen our meal. The waitress was rude and abrupt -- not introducing herself before service, interrupted our group on several instances while ordering, slow, inattentive (not checking in, not refilling drinks) and overall dismissive. My company all agreed that they were not impressed with her, but insisted on not complaining because the other aspects of the meal were great. When the cheque came at the end, we stated we would keep it together and just split it across payments. She returned with the bill and when we all pulled out our cards to pay she stated that she would have split it if we told her and then rolled her eyes. She walked away and said she would go to another table while we figured it out. I tried to stop her - explained that our math was competent enough to divide the cheque by 3 - only to have a hand waved in my face and have her attend to the other table and say "I said I will come back." She stayed at the other table for over 20min.
I asked my group to leave and stated I would take care of the bill. When she returned she asked where everyone was, I said they left. She asked how everything was, and I said great-- except for her service. No apology or attempt to recoup. Overall a disappointing effort on the waitstaff's part. It is sad that the dining experience had to be delivered by an individual who had little regard for the perception of the business. I was angry and in retrospect I regret not tipping -- having worked in restaurants for many years I know that a portion goes to kitchen and bar. If I could do it differently, I would have made a point to pass tips onto both (as these aspects of the restaurant were great!). I really hope a change in attitudes comes quickly to the serving team, as this can really damage the potential for returning customers. read more
