I really like this spot. Maybe because it is downstairs, I never think of it unless I am walking directly by. Atmosphere here is cool without being snotty. Candlelight and dark wood, low lighting and comfortable booths make it easy to converse without yelling at each other. Really great cocktail, beer and wine menu. My hubby and I chose each a cocktail. An aperol spritzer and an old fashion. Both were pretty decent. We decided to split a bunch of things to share. We went with the truffle salad (because I love this dish here). The Pembina pork pasta, the grilled cheese sandwich and the special flatbread of the night. Things came out in a timely manner so we can enjoy each dish. First was the truffle salad. I like this because it is not over dressed and the truffle mixed with the crunch of the hazelnuts and the richness of the cheese makes a perfect combination. The pasta was cooked el dente, the pork was good but there could have been more of it in there according to my husband. His favourite was the grilled cheese. It was perfect. Grilled sourdough with Gruyere dripping from it. I also liked this one very much. Finally the flatbread of the night. Really tasty mix of meat and spicy peppers. read more

I'm not going to lie, I went here because my friend was going on a date and she wanted me to creep on it from a distance to make sure she was safe. Boy am I happy I agreed to that! First off, they carry Newcastle which is my favourite beer. Secondly, the Olives, fantastic. I also tried the cured meat and it was delectable. The bartender was super pleasant and awesome. If I lived downtown, Red Star would be my neighbourhood pub. It's my default place whenever I'm meeting someone for drinks downtown. I like the super chill vibe and they always play excellent, chill music. It's too bad there's not really any dance floor to speak of because I'd be on it! It gets a bit too loud for talking on the weekend after about 9pm, but I'd still rather stay there than try to find somewhere else to go. I've never had to wait in line or pay cover - bonus! Decent beer list with some interesting choices at reasonable prices - not cheap but not out of this world expensive. Prices for highballs are also standard $5.25-$6whatever range. I've had a few items from the food menu and have always been impressed. The pasta is quite delicious. Servers are not always the friendliest (if they're cooler than you), but I've noticed some turnover and some improvement in this area for sure. One thing that annoys me is that it is apparently impossible for them to split bills. I know, it's something with their machine and not their refusal to do it, but I still find it weird and inconvenient at times when I'm with a large group. read more

I have since returned to this establishment at the right time. A friend of mine is a regular here and it's not to shabby. The bartenders were excellent and service was pretty prompt and pleasant. This is a great place to grab a drink. The ambiance is strung lights hanging from the wood beams. Mirrored walls and wood tables. It's usually pretty busy but you can book a table. They have a DJ on Friday nights as well as $5 whisky or jag shots. There's a good selection of beer, and they make a nice old fashioned too--which isn't easy to find in Edmonton. The menu is limited but good. They have fresh bread that they use to make a nice grilled cheese. I also always grab the olives. The service is usually pretty good. The food can be slow but they have a small kitchen. It's also a great place for people watching. Tons of stylish people gather there and there's never any drama. It's a great vibe with a cool crowd. During the day the cafe Lock Stock is open and you can come lounge in the bar area or do some work. It feels like a tucked away place for Edmontonians in the know. read more

A nice little Jasper Ave. institution. The first Wednesday of every month they have Jamaican food and bottles of Red Stripe on special. By Jamaican food I mean delicious jerk chicken and a couple of different types of roti. I typically hit it after work, around 5 when it opens, and it is usually not very busy. It's LOUD. Seriously. As long as you're comfortable using your outside voice inside, you'll be perfectly happy here. Probably one of the best vibes you're going to find in an Edmonton pub - the owners, cooks and staff are all great people. It really feels like everyone's there to have a good time. On our most recent trip, we had the mini burgers and the truffle salad. The salad took a few minutes longer than the mini-burgers, so I was left to suffer through the overwhelmingly delicious aroma of the burgers until her salad arrived. The burgers are perfectly cooked, on fresh buns with the most amazing apple-relish that you'll probably spend most of your time scraping off your plate (doesn't stay on the burger very well) - but trust me, worth the effort. The truffle salad is yet another amazing use of truffle oil we hadn't considered, and it's beautifully done. Complimented by a sprinkling of hazelnuts, the salad is as good as it is light. The quality of the two dishes makes me pretty confident that everything on the menu is going to taste amazing. It's not "pub cheap" ($12-17/entree), but you won't feel like you're getting ripped off. read more

I live right on jasper ave so Red Star is very convenient. Every time my friend and I have went here, we have received great service, great food and cold beer. What more could a girl ask for? Other than a little less sketchy people bumming smokes outside, though the doormen do a mostly good job of keeping them away. I'd definitely recommend the pork crustini, yum! It can get a bit noisy but the crowd is original, I suppose. You get a little bit of everything from what I've seen. A bit of the cool kids, the hipsters, the business men and women wanting to wet their whistles after work and even some older couples. I personally like a pub like that, I enjoy variety. I will say though that it is a bit dark and dreary looking though I'm sure it does attract people, you never know. I've noticed that The Common has a very similar atmosphere. I came by Red Star on a Thursday evening with a few friends to grab a couple of pints. If you're looking for a chill evening out on a weeknight in a bar with ten times more atmosphere and a much cooler crowd than The Pint, Hudsons and On The Rocks combined, venture below MRKT to this smaller space. A huge beer selection, and I'm sure other drinks as well, although we stuck to beer. A low-key soundtrack to add to the ambiance but it doesn't get in the way. Our waitress was really friendly and always promptly refilled our empty pints. If you want to come by on the weekends, it's less of a find-a-table-and-drink-away-with-friend place and more of a standing-room-only-this-place-is-bumpin' kind of bar, but I still enjoy it. It was the last stop on a late night self-directed downtown bar crawl with two other girlfriends, and we ended up chatting with some very odd fellows here on the Saturday night we went out. Worth it for the drinks and the funny crowd it attracts. Don't expect the same level of service on Fridays and Saturdays. read more

Red Star gets surprisingly packed at night. I thought this would just be a place people hit up for some drinks before they head to some other destination but the place was as packed as any club. It is a dimly lit lounge with one big bar and tons of tables. The cool thing is that it is located right next to Halo, a chic club, and you see people going back and fourth between the 2. If you want to dance you can head next door and then head back for some chilling and drinking. When I was at Red Star I kept thinking this is where you come with a group of friends to enjoy each others company and have tons of laughs. It really is the perfect atmosphere for that. read more

The Red Star is a chill place to grab a couple pints or a glass of wine away from the business of Whyte Ave. It's always dimly lit here, and has a deep, dark wood bar and tables like an English pub, without the stained glass. The Red Star is chic, in it's own underground kinda way. It is a venue for budding d.j.s, it is a watering hole for the city's fashion, beauty and restaurant industry workers, and spill-over for Halo Club next door, which is an ultra-cool lounge for drinking, dancing, socializing, grooving to tunes and blowing off steam after the work week. They've got a great selection of beers and wines and the prices are reasonable. I've never eaten here, but they probably have some swank appies on the menu. I consider this the pub equivalent of Suede lounge - Glamour Barbie comes here in black cashmere and blue jeans. read more

I hadn't been here in quite a while when I stopped here with some friends to talk. The alcohol menu is somewhat limited but the food menu looked good and we were served right away. I liked the fact that it's a pub style place and the fact that while it was noisy it was never so noisy that we couldn't be heard. It seems like a good place to stop into a traditional bar atmosphere with some hipster style thrown in. read more

The food was excellent. We came as a group and shared olives and beef carpaccio as appetizers and each had our own mains. While all the food was very very good (the tuna pasta was delicious), the food did not all arrive at the same time. It seemed to come out as it was made so the simplest things (eg grilled cheese) came out twenty minutes before the rest (eg pasta, sliders). A few of us sat hungry while others ate and then others had to sit and watch us eat when our own food came. If they could bring it all out at the same time it would make the experience quicker (and avoid rumbling tummies!) read more

The door man was welcoming and super friendly, the bartender (handlebar moustache guy) was busy when we walked in and made sure to acknowledge we were there which I like and was attentive and polite. Red Star's probably my #2 choice for bar I actually enjoy going to downtown. It's got kind of a modern English pub atmosphere, with lots of highly-polished wood, sleek bar that curves around in kind of a semicircle, and a wall of really interesting personal-type snapshots to pore over while waiting for the super-slow ATM. This place is the worst. Who is reviewing it? Yuppies? There were some suits. One was a douche bag lawyer. Anyhow, here are the deets: I went here because it was close to my girlfriend's work. We wanted a quick dinner. Don't go for the food. The menu sucks. Well maybe it's great. We didn't get to try because the service was so poor. We got drinks and waited half an hour for the server to ask us if we wanted food. She just never came, even though there were about five other people there. Two of which I think worked there. So because of the wait and the fact that my girlfriend had an appointment we figured we'd just get some olives and call it a day. Oh whoops. Apparently olives take another half hour to get into a bowl. I dunno, maybe they hand pick them from the olive field they have in the back? Oh well. At least the music wasn't so bad. My girl hated it but I felt relaxed listening to their weird chilled out hip hop-ish but not too scary for white people tunes. I decided to call it Urban Lounge music. Anyhow these olives suck and it's too expensive. I should have just went to the pita pit upstairs. EDIT: I know this review is really just about whoever was our very terrible server. Maybe they got fired. Maybe they have better servers. I've been there another time and it was passable and normal enough. There just isn't anywhere comparable for the combination of menu options, beer selection, music and vibe.

My main complaint with Edmonton is the lack of a reasonably hip, not too young, not too old crowd. Moving from Chicago a few years back made this striking that Edmonton didn't have a cool 30 somethings bar scene. Except for Red Star and Sugarbowl. The beer selection at Red Star is great, or at least as good as it gets in Edmonton. And the food is quite good. They used to have a mint and pea bruschetta that was really fantastic, but it has been dropped from the menu. There is a chef connection with Corso 32, which is definitely the best restaurant in Edmonton. So my review has become less about Red Star and more about the state of things in Edmonton, but nonetheless try it out. You'll like it. read more

I came here for #YEGTwestival and was expecting more of a pub than a gastro-bar, with a great beer list and great food. It had a comfortable vibe, good servers, and really excellent food. The menu isn't big, but it's got lots of things that I like on it. There were three of us who showed up after 10, and they were happy to serve us. We just ordered all the first 6 items on the menu, and everything was excellent. They even split a nice truffle oil salad into three bowls for us. Very helpful. read more

"Too cool for customer service" My husband and I walked in, was not greeted by anyone. There was a lady sitting in the corner sipping on some wine that shot us a look. We sat ourselves down, waited a bit and finally the wine sipping lady came over and gave us the menus. Didn't explain the menu, didn't apologize for the wait, nothing. We ordered our food, we made a simple request to add something to our order and she said sure. After waiting an extended period of time my food came out. The lady asked if my dish was good, and I had to tell her I had no tried it yet since I was waiting for my husbands food to come first, she laughed it off and walked away. Over ten minutes later my husbands dish finally made it to the table. She told him she left it up to the chef and he apparently didn't want to fufill our request and walked away to return to her table in the corner and glass of wine. There she sat for the rest of our meal as if she didn't have a care in the world. She eventually realized we were done our meals (we ended up taking ours to go because we were so frustrated with the service). We will definitely not be returning, the attitude is very too cool to do your job, would not recommend this place! read more
