This brunchy High Tea spot is great for reconnecting with some girlfriends, enjoying a lunch with your sweetheart or grabbing up some really yummy baked goodies. We ordered a pre-fixe tea package for 3, which came with a selection of teas, baked treats, finger sandwiches, one type of mini quiche and fruit. My faves were the brookie (brownie/cookie) bites, the Earl Grey tea with cream, and the warm sun-dried tomato quiche with spinach and onions. The most interesting item was the savory (and lightly sweet) caper and dill cookie. I enjoyed it! My least favorite thing would have been the mixed berry mini scones. To be honest, I didn't even eat it as it looked very unappetizing and nothing like a scone should be. They looked like blobs of a cookie fail. Would have loved for this place to hold the scone on a higher pedestal as tea isn't a proper experience without real scones. The place also seemed to lack lemon curd and clotted cream as condiment options, as well as tea pots of hot water at the table to refill ourselves as needed. All in all, it was a good experience and I would consider coming back for more of the baked treats at the checkout counter. A bit hidden within the shops. I only knew it was there because it came up on Google maps when I searched "bakery". Had to walk around for a sec to find it but once we did we were warmly greeted. Place your order up front then seat yourself. Came in for just a small treat while out with my toddler. He chose the blueberry muffin and a cup of whole milk. I chose an almond croissant and a cappuccino. The croissant had just the right amount of almond extract but was a little chewy instead of mostly flaky. I'm assuming because it was pre wrapped in a clear sack. The cappuccino was huge and had a little too much milk which made it taste more like a latte than a cappuccino and kind of drowned out the espresso. Might just try plain drip coffee next time. The bread loaves all looked good. The food smells coming from the kitchen were tempting. Think we'll try this place out for lunch next time instead. I was here with a friend for an afternoon high tea, and I must say I was disappointed! As you can see in the photos, their cafe is really chic and the service was prompt, however, it was the actual tea that fell short. I was expecting premium loose leaf teas, however, they gave us tazo tea bags. The snacks were on point, we had a good spread from cucumber sandwiches, to quiches and some amazing blueberry scones. And someone needed a cake for Sunday, was a longtime customer (I overheard) and they couldn't make it because they didn't have enough batter prepped at 1 PM on Friday. Very odd. My friends and I went for the high tea party, which came with tea bags (very minimal assortment), hot water (refills from server until we asked for the pot of water to stay at the table), the tower of sandwiches, pastries and fruit was very cute. All of the food was very tasty, but small portions especially for the price ($25 per person). We were paying attention to the sandwiches, burgers and salads being ordered by other patrons and it all looked very very good! We definitely want to go back to try some other items on the menu. Our only complaint would be the lack of assortment of teas, no cream offered for the tea or other options for sweeteners such as plain sugar or honey. I think the tea part of the tea party could have been a lot better and price should have reflected the smaller portions. I love the bread box and have been eating there since I've moved here with my parents since August. The sandwiches are amazing and I get it with a side salad instead of chips. The seasonal cookies are always super cute and taste really good. They had had a special dessert today it was really good. The prices are also reasonable for the food and the size of it. This is such a cute restaurant at the Alley. I believe it's been around for a while because they do have amazing bread. This particular visit was to grab some coffee and have it with a chocolate chip cookie. I had the cappuccino made with almond milk. We were literally in and out since they close at 3 PM and we got there about 30 minutes prior to closing. I can say that I've tried their sandwiches and pastries in the past and they have not disappointed. It also looks like they have tea parties which is what we saw when we were at the restaurant. I have a love hate relationship with the bread box. I love them and hate they are so AMAZING! I especially love them in the fall when they make the make the most yummy, indulgent, tasty, take me back to leaves dropping in beautiful colors, cider mills and apple picking, tasty desserts, that make your taste buds and waistline explode!!! The breads, biscuits and all the things that make me want to go home and sit in grandmas kitchen with jam and just eat. If you like good food. This is worth the stop. The ambiance of this place was absolutely amazing. Found this little corner a little space in the world where you can get away and feel at home at the same time. There are so many intricate things to look at, interesting like an antique art show full of color and welcoming beauty. As soon as I opened the door, I was greeted by a delightful, charming lady named Tina. She took me straight to the place where I order my food, and then I quickly got seated. I received another friendly greeting with a smiling face. Her name is Lindsey. She took my order and I only had enough time to take a couple pictures and get myself situated before my food arrived. My husband and I had lunch there today and hoped to take home a dessert, but had concerns about food allergies. The waiter went to check ingredients for us, then the owner came out to talk to us. She probably spent at least thirty minutes going back and forth from our table to the kitchen, bringing us photos of the various ingredients and talking to us. I can't remember the last time a restaurant took our food allergies this seriously and I can't put into words how meaningful that was for us, especially coming from the owner. Thankfully, she spent a long time on this because the dessert we picked had an allergen in it, and it would have been a terrible experience for us. We will be loyal customers to Bread Box forever! The Alley on Bitters has chewed up and spat out countless restaurants over the years. Jason Dady's Bin 555 and Tre Enoteca were too fancy and highfalutin for their environs (i.e., boutique shops specializing in rustic housewares aimed squarely at middle-aged housewives), while other eateries (The Pomegranate, anyone?) were largely forgettable and would have failed just about anywhere. Only The Bread Box, a bakery/cafe now in its fifth year, has thrived in a space where so many other places have faltered. Chalk up The Bread Box's success to Lucas and Tina Kent, the former a CIA grad and the latter a restaurant veteran with close ties to famed local restaurateur Cappy Lawton. Even without the large breakfast and lunch crowds, Lucas and Tina would still make a healthy living via local wholesale distribution. Some of San Antonio's most celebrated restaurateurs source their baked goods from The Bread Box. If you've ever bitten into a Philly cheesesteak sandwich at Gino's Deli Stop & Buy or smeared chicken liver mousse on a slice of toasted wheat bread at Cured, then you've unknowingly sampled the Kent's kneaded wares. Fortunately for us plebeians, the rotating selection of breads (as many as 33 varieties per week) and other baked goods are available to purchase at the restaurant. This author seldom makes demands of his audience, but in this case I am issuing you a directive, Dear Reader: call the restaurant before they open and tell them to reserve *at least* one sack of English muffins. They usually sell out within minutes, so calling in advance is a must. These bad boys are the real deal: crusty, crumbly, almost diaphanous leavened bits of buttery bliss. Unlike the vastly inferior mass-produced variety, these taste strongly of yeast and become even more buttery when toasted. They are so intensely buttery, in fact, that you can hear the butter sizzling in the toaster. I've been known to devour three muffins in one sitting...because they are delicious and I have an eating disorder. I have yet to visit for breakfast service, but the lunch fare has never disappointed. The Bread Box features one of the city's best chicken salad sandwiches, a sweet-savory concoction featuring herb-roasted chicken breast, Granny Smith apples, cranberries, and Dijon mayonnaise on buttered, toasted honey wheat seed bread. It's a sandwich of familiar flavors made with superior ingredients. Bakeries and tea rooms tend to attract a predominately female demographic, but The Bread Box burger would satisfy the manliest of appetites. The half-pound patty -- a blend of Wagyu brisket and short rib sourced from Peeler Farms -- features a dollop of housemade smokey-sweet bacon jam tamed by a thick slice of nutty, melty fontina. The brioche bun -- also homemade (of course) -- achieves the alchemical feat of being both pillowy and sturdy enough to contain the juices from the patty and bacon jam. Desserts are invariably excellent and include a caramel apple pie chock full of the titular fruit (both sweet and sour varieties for contrast) and ensconced in a crust both thick and flaky. The Bread Box's nontraditional take on chocolate cream pie is admittedly an acquired taste, but I have grown to appreciate the contrast between the cocoa and the pronounced twang of the sour cream base. The large, somewhat dense chocolate chip cookies are buttery throughout and laced with just enough salt to balance out the sweetness. Hitherto this point, I have bestowed nothing but sycophantic praise to The Bread Box and its talented cadre of bakers and cooks, but one persistent issue prevents me from awarding a five-star review. Without exception, the kitchen inexplicably sells out of menu items. I can understand when a place runs out of an especially popular item later in the day, but The Bread Box often runs out of key components (chicken salad, certain types of bread for the sandwiches) less than one hour into lunch service. Waste may indeed make haste, but a restaurant should err on the side of its customer; anticipate demand and make a little more than needed. The Bread Box is a deservedly popular spot for breakfast and lunch, but I question how much longer it can survive in The Alley. Allow me to rephrase that. I'm not sure how much longer The Alley can survive despite The Bread Box's popularity. The shops surrounding the restaurant attract such little patronage that I wonder how they manage to stay in business. The Bread Box may be the heart of The Alley, but the adjoining shops are suffering from a severe case of peripheral artery disease. The Alley's days might be numbered, but I have faith that The Bread Box could relocate almost anywhere and continue to thrive. I won't have it any other way; I can never go without those English muffins. read more

Our party of three visited The Bread Box for the first time this morning. Arriving at about 11:30 am on a Sunday, we anticipated a wait, but it seems we just beat the lunch crowd; we were seated immediately. Our waitress visited the table to get our order. Hubby ordered the Eggs Benedict, and both the granddaughter and I ordered the Two Egg Breakfast. I requested sausage, bacon for her, and we both ordered hash browns. She also ordered a cinnamon roll. When our meals came, the plates held potatoes, not hash browns. We told the young man we had ordered hash browns. "Oh, we don't have those any more; it's potatoes now." Okay, well, two things: 1) the menu should not show hash browns, and, 2) the waitress should have informed us. How critical were the hash browns? The granddaughter would have changed her order entirely; she specifically wanted the hash browns. And my potatoes were tepid. All that aside, we enjoyed our food. Hubby loved his Eggs Benedict, I enjoyed my eggs and sausage, and the granddaughter ate that cinnamon roll with relish. The owner sent over a beautiful sausage kolache, but I couldn't eat it -- I'm gluten intolerant! So the granddaughter had yet another delicious goodie. It was difficult at best to get our waitress' attention, but there were other people who took care of drink refills. She did return to the table to bring our bill. Overall we had a really enjoyable time at The Bread Box today! I have been following them forever on Instagram so it was awesome to finally check out their tea party. It was $25 per adult and $15 per child. Reservations are usually made through the online form or calling them. I filled out the online form and never got a call. I waited a few days and then called them myself to make the reservation. They fit us in at 11:00AM on a Friday. It was a really cute set up. They sat our party at two tables. The service was great. Michael was our server and he was very upbeat and provided great information. The only thing I was slightly disappointed in was the food. We had eight people in our party. In total we had 6 finger sandwiches, so people were arguing over sandwiches. Also there wasn't enough desserts for everyone at the table so we all had to split desserts. I was really surprised after seeing their posts and limited the food was on our tables. However - THE QUICHE WAS TO DIE FOR! It was actually the best quiche I've ever had! Overall I highly recommend!
