Such a cute and tucked away little spot! My friend decide to have their birthday here. Nothing cuter than a tea party birthday! They had us in a little party room which was soooo cute. Only complaint was that there was no music. Not sure if the speaker was broken, but it would've been nice to have that ambiance. They made the birthday cake there in house as well as all the snacks which we were able to choose from prior to the day of the party and they were delicioussss. We were able to bring our own champagne which was a bonus! Loved that. They were attentive and kept checking in on us. Everything was great! After a morning spent looking at and pulling the trigger on furniture purchases, it was time for a later lunch. One of our neighbors (actually, future neighbors) suggested the Bread Box so off we went on this somewhat cold, dreary day. Our GPS took us to the place but we somehow missed the sign for the Bread Box. It wasn't until I saw the Bread Box van and the seemingly inconspicuous sign for it that we were convinced we were in the right place. I guess we parked towards the back since we had to traverse an alley to get to the Bread Box. We were greeted warmly upon entering and shown our table along the window. Quaint and charming, the place evokes memories of childhood lunches spent at grandma's place...when she would bend over backwards to serve you anything you want, whether they were good for you or not. Miss you grandma! OK, back to the Bread Box. The lunch menu mostly had sandwiches, a burger, salads and soups. My wife was intrigued by their Beet Reuben...but they were out. She then opted for their Quiche with a side order of their Asian-inspired soup of the day (shredded carrots and zucchini with ginger that was quite good) instead of the chips for an additional $2.00. I ordered the Rachel (smoked turkey with cheese and sauerkraut on a marble rye bread) with the soup of the day. My sandwich was very good, with the smoky flavor of the tender slices of turkey shining through the mild bite of the sauerkraut and the cheese. The soup was also good. My wife also liked her quiche. She thought it had good flavors but felt it was a bit overdone. Service was just OK. Once we were served our meals, we had the obligatory "how's your meal" drive by then nothing else until we finished our meal...and instead of asking us if we needed refills for our drinks and coffee, the server seemed more interested in "pushing" their desserts. We could've asked for refills, but I firmly believe the mark of good to great service is not having to ask for anything, including drink refills. The Bread Box is nestled into an area called The Alley, and they claim to bake everything on site, fresh daily, including their breads, pastries, cupcakes, and pies! When you first walk in, there's a huge display of their baked goods to buy and take home, or you can dine in for breakfast or lunch. It's a cozy place to meet up with your mom or some girlfriends. Weekend lunch menu consists mostly of sandwiches (combo available with soup or salad and chips), our group shared a couple along with some pie slices. The Chicken Ranch Bacon sandwich looked and smelled great but I'm not much of a bacon person. The chicken salad with pecans and grapes, a version I usually don't care for, was super fresh. The Italian Melt was the best pick of the bunch with fresh tomato and basil, and it paired well with their poblano cream soup. Lemon Meringue and Peach Cobbler pies were both well-made with solid crusts, but the meringue stole the show with the perfect level of tartness! During these unprecedented times it's important to support our local restaurants. With social distancing because of COVID-19 going on curbside pickup is the option. I was able to order online via the restaurant website and pick out my food and pay. I received a receipt via e-mail and later stopped by the restaurant to pick up my much anticipated Chicken Pot Pie . After taking a slice or two out of the beautiful looking pie it was with much anticipation as I finally took my first bite. It was perfect. The crust, the consistency and taste of this savory pie filling made this often sought after comfort food absolutely satisfying. I very rarely eat bread due to health reasons. When I do, I seek really good sourdough bread. Yesterday morning I drove across town as the website said they had sourdough boules on Saturdays. I arrived after they were open about an hour. Cute restaurant. Nice people. There was a single boule available. It looked perfect. Still ever so slightly warm on the bottom. Bought it and drove home. By the time I arrived home, the top had caved in a little. I thought that was odd...not the first sourdough boule I've purchased in my lifetime. I had a hard time trying to slice it as it caved in further. Was the absolute worst bread I ever had. The inside was dominated by a single huge air bubble. Was inedible. Went into the trash. The bread was dried out, the chicken salad was a mere spoonful on each half of sandwich and it had zero taste. You now order at the counter, which is fine since help is obviously limited, but then you are expected to tip on meager service and poor food before you even eat. Every time I go, I'm very well taken of by folks who treat you like family. I've brought my family here for Easter lunch, and they also fell in love. Nestled in The Alley on Bitters, this restaurant sits inside a labyrinth of shops. The window on the side gives you a view of the bakery "behind the scenes" as the employees skuttle about working to bring you fresh bread and pastries from scratch. When you walk inside, you're greeted by their pastry shelf stuffed with treats. My favorite? The sandwich cookies, duh! Everyone is bound to find something they like here. They have a variety of burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads, etc during the week, though the weekend menu is why I go back. Eggs Benedict, Croque Madame, Avocado Flatbread, it's all amazing. They once had waffles on their menu, too, but like any local shop hoping to capture their audience, they keep things interesting and fresh with a rotating seasonal menu. Their rewards system is also very generous. I've earned many free entrees coming here, or even a free muffin, cupcake, loaf of bread, or other treat. The Bread Box was wonderful to work with! Their manager Kaylan was professional and on top of things, she made me feel very confident about choosing them for my wedding. There were two other bakeries I considered (Bakery Lorraine and Bird Bakery), because their products are amazing. But to be honest, they were a bit flaky (pun intended) when it came to communication and although I'll still patronize their bakeries, I didn't trust them with my wedding cake. But back to The Bread Box, when the cake arrived it looked Exactly like the picture I sent them. They also made a groom's cake, researching the design to make an amazing cake. As a former professional baker finding a great tasting cake was important to me. The Bread Box makes a great tasting cake, but their frosting is also perfectly balanced. And it should be noted that despite having a dessert table, we did not have a lot of leftover cake. The price was Ridiculously low considering the quality of the product. Consistent is the word. I've gone here 4 times in the last 3 months and 9 out of 10 items have been fantastic. After sampling all the deserts the only downside in my mind is the availability of items is sporadic and are first come first serve. It is a good problem to have for a business, but as a customer who ordered online only to have them tell me they were out of 2 items after I already paid was frustrating. They're online presence in general seems to lend to issues like this, but I am glad the option to order online exists at all right now. But the food itself is great. The service is great and kind as well. The oatmeal cream pies are worth returning for alone, but everything in the pastry section is a safe bet to be fantastic. read more

My husband does not do reviews but today he was so upset after stopping by The Bread Box he asked me to record a review for him. He says this is what is wrong with the industry today. *He is a retired Chef/restuarant owner and Culinary Arts instructor for over 37 years. I am appalled - having driven by The Bread Box several times I stopped to possibly pick up some pastries for Sunday morning. I was excited to see people sitting inside eating, and was looking for the entrance. I noticed an open door and engaged a very nice lady standing near by. While asking where the entrance was or if there was a counter to go to a man approached down a hallway hollering at me asking what I wanted. I turned and asked him if he worked here. He replied," yes-what do you want?" I said I was looking for an entrance. He very rudely addressed me saying we're closed and started to walk off. I replied, "Sir, don't holler and speak to me that way. " He continued to walk away with no acknowledgement. I thanked the lady for her help and left. I later discovered this was the owner who was so rude. In looking over the reviews I can see this rudeness is prevalent in many of the comments. Be assured I will not be a patron of The Bread Box. Had the best brunch experience yet in San Antonio at this fine establishment. I had the Croque Madame......impeccable. Creme of poblano soup was a wonderful soup of the day, My wife enjoyed Orange French toast with a cherry compote. ALL the staff was HIGHLY attentive and soo friendly. Our waiter Chris made the perfect menu suggestions based on our taste, and even though he was amazingly busy, he effortlessly made my wife and I feel as though we were a friend at his house. Dessert: a piece "Ice Box" Cheesecake (not always available). It was different...much fluffier and creamier than "ordinary" cheesecake, but had outstanding flavor. Only problem ...The slices of pie are $5 each. Felt it a little high. Overall our meal was a tad pricey..but it's not going to keep me from going back! As someone who often visits places alone, I always appreciate businesses that give equal attention the the single costumers as they do to the families. This place was very friendly and accommodating to me. I accidentally (my fault) ordered the chicken salad sandwich, but as Bob Ross said "happy accidents". It was sooo good. No regrets.
